Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Paula Lureman speaks about building reconfiguration at Monday night’s Newton Community School District board meeting. Lureman was the only person who asked to speak during the public forum, with the refinancing of older general obligation bonds being one of the many actions taken by the board.
Bond refinancing measures approved by NCSD District savings approximately $35,000 annually By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News
Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved a bid for security camera installation and software presented by Celia Robertson and Ryan Eaton of Jasper County Information Systems.
At Monday’s night’s meeting, the Newton Community School District board approved some measures that should save the district a lot of money. The meeting, held at Emerson Hough, featured several bond and financing items. Director of Business Services Gayle Isaac made it clear the bond discussion was an attempt by the board to reduce debt by refinancing existing bond debt. All of Monday’s actions were regarding a 1998 voter-approved bond, which was refunded to the public with a 2007 measure, and
none of it is related to the Jan. 12 board vote to pursue a new build of the Berg complex. The board approved the receipt of four sealed bids for the sale of series 2015 bond refinancing bids, and approved a resolution directing the sale of the approximately $1,730,000 general obligation bonds. The board also approved a resolution authorizing the redemption of outstanding general obligation school refunding bonds, dated March 5, 2007. “Many school bonds are ‘callable,’ which means that we may redeem them earlier than the maturity date,” Isaac explained in an email on Tuesday. “In this case, the 2007 series is callable this year. When ran the numbers with the current interest rates, it was advisable to refund the bonds and save the district money.” Susanne Gerloch and Jen Ballard of Public Financial Manage-
ment, a Des Moines firm, made a presentation at the meeting. Gerloch announced for PFM that four sealed bids for the bids were received, with none of the four submitting bids exceeding a 1.34 percent interest rate. The winning bid, from Banker’s Bank of Madison, Wis., had a rate of 0.97 percent. The threeyear bonds are set to mature in 2018. “That means your district will be able to refinance 1.73 million dollars of debt at less than one percent interest,” Gerloch said. “That will generate a net savings of $75, 287 — and about $35,000 annually.” Isaac said the 1998 bonds were refunded to the public as part of a 2007 refunding to save the district money, at which point the district began to pay off the bonds in a different way. Dairy Queen to give away free cones Monday By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Monday could be a busy day at 203 First Avenue E. in Newton. That’s because Dairy Queen plans to give away small ice cream cones on Monday to celebrate the restaurant chain’s 75th anniversary, and the Newton store is participating. “One cone per customer,” said Bob O’Brien, owner of the Newton franchise. “It’s
kind of special promotion for this company.” The promotion is also connected to a charity drive for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. A cash donation container for that cause will be on hand Monday at the Newton store, O’Brien said. The Newton store only has three soft-serve cone flavor possibilities: vanilla, chocolate and a vanilla-chocolate swirl. However, the store will also offer its full regular menu at cost during regular business hours,
which are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays. The Associated Press reported Dairy Queen Executive Vice President Barry Westrum as saying the ice cream giveaway is one of many 2015 promotions designed to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The restaurant chain picked March 16 to celebrate with soft serve ice cream because that will be the 75th day of the year. The Dairy Queen chain is based in Minneapolis, and it includes more than 6,400 restau-
