‘Twilight’ impersonator expected to change plea in child porn case By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Alleged “Twilight” impersonator David A. LaVera is expected to change his plea on federal child pornography charges during a hearing set for Thursday. The hearing comes four days before 33-year-old LaVera was set to stand trial on charges brought forth by a

federal grand jury including knowingly producing child pornography, or sexual exploitation of a minor, as well as knowingly possessLaVera ing child pornography. He originally pleaded not guilty

to both counts. Court documents released in August said LaVera used his smartphone to video a 12-year-old victim taking a shower and a 13-year-old victim using the bathroom at a Newton home. According to court documents, LaVera later uploaded that video onto his laptop computer for viewing. The 33-year-old California

man was initially charged locally in June 2014 after he allegedly used his celebrity status to entice a 14-year-old girl to a park in Baxter after having sexually explicit conversations with the teen on Facebook. While at the park, LaVera is accused of touching the teen inappropriately and then luring her into his vehicle. He allegedly drove her around Baxter until concerned family

and friends, who had reported a kidnapping, were able to stop the vehicle and get the girl out of the car. When stopped by police, LaVera was found with a sword longer than 8 inches hidden in the driver’s side door jam, which was within the defendant’s reach. LaVera also had four double-edged LAVERA | 3A

NHS presents ‘Hello, Dolly’ on Friday, Saturday Spring production set for 6:30 p.m. both evenings By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Newton Community School District board member Robyn Friedman, right, talks with Berg Elementary School Principal Jolene Comer during Tuesday night’s public forum about possible reconfiguration. The board hosted two forums and covered a wide variety of issues.

Forums focused on many issues, including special education Number of specialists at each elementary school was major discussion item By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

There were many, many topics covered during the two public forums about possible Newton Community School District reconfiguration. One subject that received a great deal of focus was specialist involvement, and how many special education, Title I and Level 2 and 3 behavioral-disorder special-education teachers can be on campus. The amount of co-teaching that can take place was also an item discussed more than once. The forums revealed how many questions the public still has not had a chance to ask, such as whether reconstruction of the Berg Complex is related to configuration, as well as how many

decisions and choices the NCSD board and Superintendent Bob Callaghan must explain to area parents, teachers, taxpayers and voters. The format for both forums involved a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation by Callaghan, followed by a breakup into about nine table groups. Those groups helped formulate questions for note cards, and school board members helped weed out duplicates and common themes. The tables at the forums, held in one of the Newton DMACC campus’s second-floor conference halls, were all equipped with brochures, showing three different configuration options for kindergarten through the sixth grade, along with a single packet of statistics, survey results and district

student enrollment data. The forum that was held on Thursday, Feb. 26, lasted more than two and a half hours, and many of the teachers, parents and others in attendance returned for Tuesday’s forum. There is no specific board vote planned on reconfiguration as of press time Thursday, but board president Sheri Benson said the topic will likely be on an agenda this month or in April. The board, which has yet to set a 2015-16 calendar or discuss the annual budget at a regular board meeting, is set to meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Emerson Hough building’s conference room. In Tuesday’s forum, Callaghan tried to emphasize that the brochure’s specialist teacher numbers at each campus, for each of the three configurations detailed, are not carved in stone. FORUMS | 3A

This weekend, some Newton High School students will take on a daunting task — and not simply because the female lead in their play has been played by some talented people. The NHS drama department’s spring production, “Hello, Dolly!,” is set to run Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the high school’s Cen-

ter for Performance. Not only will Courtney Tabor take on the challenging lead role of Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi, played by Barbara Streisand and others, but the entire NHS cast and crew will be taking on a production that calls for a lot of energy — and a lot of singing. The play is the story of the lead character’s efforts to marry a wellknown “half-a-millionaire” in late-19thcentury New York City. She tracks him down in Yonkers, then by train DOLLY | 3A

IRS warns of potential scam targeting Iowa taxpayers Newton Daily News The Iowa Department of Revenue has been made aware of a potential scam targeting Iowa taxpayers. The scam begins through an automated phone call, which shows

on caller ID as being from 515-281-3114. That phone number is the Department’s general Taxpayer Services number; however, no automated phone calls can originate from that number. When answering the

call, the taxpayer is informed they are eligible for a refund from the Iowa Department of Revenue. The taxpayer is then asked whether the refund should be deposited into the account the Department has on file or if they’d like to

donate the refund to an animal charity. The Iowa Department of Revenue does not make these types of calls. Officials believe this is an attempt to steal bank account or other personal information. By fraudulently
