Latest reconfiguration forum draws 70; many issues covered By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News If Newton Community School District Superintendent Bob Callaghan would have gotten into every detail of every concern expressed at Tuesday night’s public forum about possible reconfiguration, he might still be pacing back and forth across the Newton DMACC campus’s second-floor conference room at this very moment. Callaghan, board members and administrators spent nearly three hours responding to community questions at the forum, which was the second one on the topic in a five-day span. Those in attendance, who ranged from teachers to parents to longtime Newton-area residents, learned even more about how many details there are to reconfiguring a district — many of which Callaghan or board president Sheri Benson said would only be addressed by principals at reconfigured schools. Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Family members of Copper Dollar Ranch victim Melisa Gregory — Lisa Gregory, Bernie Cahill and Angel Gregory — have a moment of silence Tuesday night on the Jasper County Courthouse steps in Newton. Families of Melisa Gregory and Steven Fisher held a third annual candlelight vigil to remember the 32nd anniversary of the young couple’s March 3, 1983 killings.
Candle in the wind Families of CDR victims host third courthouse vigil By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News
Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Newton Community School District Superintendent Bob Callaghan speaks during Tuesday night’s public forum about possible reconfiguration. The three-hour forum covered a variety of facilities and teacher-staffing topics.
Family and friends of Melisa Gregory and Steven Fisher huddled close Tuesday, during a chilly but poignant candlelight memorial on the Jasper County Courthouse steps. This is the third time such an event was held to remember the young couple on the anniversary of their March 3, 1983 murders at the former Copper Dollar Ranch northwest of Newton. A spiral notebook rested on a table in front of framed photographs of Steven Fisher and Melisa Gregory — a candle with the likeness of Jesus Christ burned at the table’s center. The book held the signatures of those who have attended all three

Plans start for East 31st Street North Restoration Project By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The process has started for the East 31st Street North Restoration Project with the city council approving a resolution to order bids at its Monday meeting. The project, which runs from First Avenue East to North 19th Avenue East, is still in the beginning phases but will bring much needed improvements to the highly traveled road. “We’re going to go from First Avenue north to the curve and we are going to do a concrete overlay,” Director of Public Works Keith Laube said. “(The road) has really served us pretty well but it is time to improve it. It has a lot of patches, broken edges and it is really costing us to maintain it on an annual basis.”
Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News East 31st Street North/Beltline Road is set to get a concrete overlay, improving the highly trafficked road. The overlay will run from First Avenue East to North 19th Avenue East and is set to be completed in the upcoming construction season.
Along with the overlay, drain tile will be added on each side to help drain the sub-grade soils, relieving the concrete of moisture. The moisture can cause frost heave in the winter, where the water expands under the pavement and in the summer the opposite happens when the pavement heats up causing water to come to the surface and blow outs occur. The road will also gain a couple of feet on each side going from 12 feet lanes to 14 feet lanes. That, Laube said, will help the semis that frequently travel the road. “Right now a lot of the semi traffic is on the edge of the pavement and it has started to break away,” Laube said. Still in the beginning phases, the project is conducted through COUNCIL | 3A

Supervisors approve part-time Veterans Affairs clerk By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A part-time temporary Veterans Affairs clerk position was approved at the Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. The details of the position are not yet known but could potentially start at 20 hours per week with pay at $15 per hour for help with office work. Chris Chartier, Jasper County Veterans Affairs Director, initially suggested the position be budgeted for two years. “What I would be much more comfortable with is creating a one year, temporary parttime position and then during this year if we can demonstrate that we are getting our bang for our buck and our veterans are getting served better, then I would cer-
tainly look to change it to a permanent parttime, but I would like to see some results,” Supervisor Dennis Stevenson said. Chartier said that he would make that change work, and would like to get to get caught up in his department. “I just want to get to work. I have a lot to do, I have been pushing for this for four months and now I’m four months behind on the efforts that you are assessing that I am going to make things better with. Give it to me temporarily and I will make it work,” Chartier said. Supervisor Denny Carpenter brought up the quarterly reports that Chartier submitted and how the activity numbers have stayed flat SUPERVISORS | 3A
