Dennis Magee/Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier Defendant Theresa Supino talks to her attorneys Jill Eimermann, center, and Steven Addington on Wednesday in Black Hawk County, in Waterloo. Defense attorneys have rested their case in the trial of the Iowa woman accused of killing her husband and his girlfriend nearly 32 years ago.

Defense rests in Supino double murder trial

Closing arguments expected Thursday By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News WATERLOO — Attorneys for Theresa “Terri” Supino rested their case Wednesday at the Black Hawk County Courthouse after just one full day of witness testimony and five people taking the stand for the defendant. Supino is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the March 3, 1983 killings of her estranged husband, 20-year-old Steven Fisher, and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Melisa Gregory, at the former Copper Dollar Ranch northwest of Newton. The defense did reserve its right to make an offer of proof and potentially examine Alan Shad, former co-owner of the Copper Dollar Ranch, if he appears from Florida on Thursday. Closing arguments by both

county prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday. The case will then be sent to jurors for deliberations. Following Wednesday’s testimony, co-defense attorney Jill Eimermann read excerpts from Fisher’s medical records in the year leading to the murder. Both parties agreed to this information as a “stipulation” for the defense resting their case. A reason was not given by the defense for allowing jurors to hear the medical history, but an incident where Fisher broke his arm in February 1983 allegedly due to Supino driving down a gravel road with Fisher caught in the window, has been an important element in the state’s case against the defendant. The defense has contested not only the date of the incident but its occurrence. Several witnesses for the state have

testified they remember seeing Fisher in a sling or cast in the days and months leading to his murder. From Jan. 1, 1982 through March 1, 1983, Fisher received three treatments at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton, Eimermann told jurors. In August 1982, Fisher told doctors during the examination he became angry and put his hand through a glass window, resulting in lacerations on his hand with a forearm splint as treatment. Fisher’s other procedures at Skiff throughout 1982 included treatment for back muscle strain and for trauma sustained during a motor vehicle accident in September 1982. The defense tried to display what they characterized as a “reference” for jurors showing video of a driven route to the SUPINO | 3A

The Newton Parks and Ground Department is hosting a Winter Fun Day for some good old fashioned winter fun for kids from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Sunset Park shelter. It is the second year for the event that is taking place during the planned day off for Newton schools. Park Centre and Jasper County Conservation are also sponsoring the event. “School’s out for the day so we want to give kids the opportunity to just get outside and do something,” Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth said. “A lot of people are experiencing cabin fever right now so it is a good excuse to get outside and burn some energy off for the day.”

By Stephanie and Mike Moran Special to the Daily News In the NCT’s latest theatrical offering, the cast and directors of “No Sex Please, We’re British” have found the perfect blend of physical and sophisticated comedy that will have audiences laughing ... and cringing ... and laughing some more, at each turn of this fast paced farce. The cast is a nice blend of some of Newton Community Theatre’s favorite actors, as well as some fresh faces who are making a name for themselves in recent productions. An ice skating rink purchased through the Friends of Newton Parks and the Newton Parks Department will wait until next year to be assembled and used by the community. The rink, which arrived in recent weeks, does not have a set water line to fill and maintain the ice yet and further planning is needed to get it up and running, said Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth. The idea for the skating rink came from the

As if there weren’t enough potential phone and email scams for senior citizens to be wary about, Iowa media outlets were warned about another trend in scams this week. Carol Sage, the clerk of the court for both Madison and Jasper counties, sent out an email this week, warning about potential jury and jury-notice scams. She said the Jasper County clerk’s office has received two complaints recently about potential scams involving jury duty. Both victims had been contacted by someone first, Sage said, and her office doesn’t initiate contact with the public regarding any jury affairs. “We mail out a summons, and all of the communication to the public, initiated to us, is by mail,” Sage said. “No one will get an unsolicited email or phone call from us. We return phone calls and emails, but if you hear from us, unannounced, it will be by mail.” Sage said both of the individuals who inquired at the Jasper County clerk’s office were strongly encouraged to contact law enforcement.
