Tim Supino: Fisher alive when we left CDR WATERLOO — Theresa “Terri” Supino’s twin brother took the stand for prosecutors Friday, detailing a visit the two made to the Copper Dollar Ranch on March 2, 1983 just hours before the bodies of Steven Fisher and Melisa Gregory were found brutally beaten. Terri Supino is on trial at the Black Hawk County Courthouse for the double murder of her estranged husband, 20-yearold Fisher, and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Gregory, at the CDR northwest of Newton. Jasper County prosecutors will continue to call witnesses Monday. Tim Supino made clear to jurors his claim that Fisher was alive when the two left the ranch. But during their 11 p.m. to mid-
County law enforcement warns about phone tax scams By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News It’s tax season. That might seem like a hunting season of sorts — especially for phone and email scams. Newton Police Chief Jeff Hoebelheinrich said three people contacted his department between Wednesday and Friday regarding apparent telephone scams, with all three reporting some variation of demanding payment for taxes. One Newton resident, Kay Duncan, told the Daily News she was taken for about $1,200 during a Tuesday phone call. “I’m always so cau-
tious, a lot of people were surprised I went for it,” Duncan said. “He said he was with the IRS, and there was a warrant for my arrest if I didn’t pay. The money was gone almost as soon as I put it in there.” Duncan said the call came from a phone number that began with the 206 area code. That number would normally be assigned to phones in Seattle, Wash., area, but all attempts to call the number back were unsuccessful. ri Supino was preoccupied with finding Fisher on March 2, as she needed money to buy shoes for the couple’s young son, Rocky. The defense reminded Tim Supino during cross examination he was once a suspect in the murders. “In my opinion, Terri was suspect No. 1, and I was No. 2,” Supino said. State witness Carol Supino testified that Terri and Tim Supino were gone for roughly 45 minutes the night of March 2 looking for Fisher, and she stayed up speaking with the defendant until 2 a.m. She also claimed she and Terri went to bed at roughly the same time. Terri Supino had been living at the home of Carol and Carlo Supino Jr., her brother and sisterin-law, with her two children the SUPINO | 3A

The RadioShack Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Thursday, and that could mean the Newton location may be among thousands of stores to close. The company posted a restructuring announcement on its website Thursday. RadioShack currently has approximately 4,000 company-owned stores in the U.S. — including one on Iowa Speedway Drive in Newton, next to Dollar Tree. The company will sell between 1,500 and 2,400 stores to General Wireless Inc., an affiliate of Standard General L.P., and will close the remaining stores. Signs posted Monday morning on the Newton storefront read “store closing” and “everything must go.” Calls to store and district management were deferred to Radio Shack Cooperate Media Relations, which directed the Daily News back to the announcement on the company’s website.
The announcement says the company will announce which exact stores will close “in the near future.” There is a page of www.radioshackcorporation.com devoted entirely to cooperate restructuring. Sprint has agreed in principle to open “stores within stores” to sell mobile technology in as many that Standard General takes on. Discussions are also under way with interested parties to sell all of the company’s remaining assets. There are 14 stores in Iowa that could be affected by this announcement, including stores in Ankeny, Ottumwa, in the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines and in the Marshalltown Mall. There are more than 1,000 dealer franchise RadioShack stores in 25 countries. These stores, along with the stores operated by its Mexican subsidiary, and its Asia operations are not included in the Chapter 11 filing or the agreements announced Thursday, the announcement said.

in the 21st century without good quality Internet access,” Loebsack said. The discussion began
with what the competition is in the area between Internet providers. Don Jennings, EVP gen-
eral manager at Partner Communications Cooperative said his biggest competition is wireless cell phone providers, but that the data limits have people getting their Internet in several ways. “Eighty percent of the data that cellular phone users use is in the home. When you’re in your home you’re using your WiFi network off your Internet in the home. That tends to be the trend, plus with the multiple devices you get to that pay limit pretty fast,” Jennings said. Getting quality, affordable internet to rural areas was also discussed, with infrastructure posing a problem and a potential solution for those who live off the grid. LOEBSACK | 3A

night visit, he testified he had no suspicions that Fisher was there with Gregory, claiming he saw “no sign of activity” in the trailer as Fisher exited to speak with Terri Supino. Previous accounts from Tim Supino, including his taped interview in the TNT program “Cold Justice,” claim he felt Fisher closed the trailer door quickly March 2, to keep the Supinos from finding Gregory inside. The witness presented a timeline of events, showing jurors the route they took to the CDR to find Fisher that night, including a detour past Gregory’s home. After he dropped his sister off at the home of their brother, Carlo Supino Jr., Tim Supino said he went home, changed clothing and did electrical work all night at a 24hour grocery store. The defendant’s twin said Ter-
