Snow storm ends, local areas hit with 12 inches Sun, partly cloudy skies forecast Monday By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News Travel conditions will still be tricky in Jasper County and throughout Iowa Monday, as many Iowans dig out from the weekend’s winter storm which dumped more than 12 inches of snow
locally. According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall totals hit 10 to 12 inches by Sunday night in central Iowa. Baxter saw 13 inches of snow, the service reported. Power had been restored to most Alliant Energy custom-
ers in Newton by Monday morning after heavy, wet snow caused down limbs to effect power lines. Alliant Energy spokesperson Justin Foss said 36 Newton customers were without power as of 12:30 p.m. Sunday. He said outage reports began coming in at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, and crews were slow to restore SNOW | 7A

Iowa Association of Professional Firefighters Local 1457 President Tom Richmond sent an email to the Newton mayor and city council requesting two additional full-time firefighters, but the council wasn’t presented with any personnel requests during last week’s budget discussions.
Richmond emailed city council regarding two additional full-timers By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News A local union president has explained to the Newton City Council and the mayor exactly the staffing increase needs of the Newton Fire Department. In a Jan. 20 two-page letter to the council and mayor, Iowa Association of Professional Firefighters Local 1457 President Tom Richmond called for two additional fulltime firefighters to be hired. He said
the need is great and longstanding, and would allow the city to have three complete seven-man crews. While the department’s budget request included three new vehicles and cleared its initial approval by the council in last week’s budget meeting, it still must be approved in the council’s final budget in the weeks ahead. However, when Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik presented his department’s requests, there were no personnel requests made. Rich-
Fuel Saver program brings big savings to Newton customers By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News As gas prices plummeted below $2 a gallon, social media sites became saturated with images of the low prices people were paying to fill up. Oftentimes the price per gallon became much lower thanks to the Hy-Vee Fuel Saver program. Since December 2013, the Newton Hy-Vee store has issued more than $735,000 in fuel savings with the program.
In that time, just under 2.5 million people have used the Fuel Saver program, saving on average just under 30 cents per customer, said store manager Todd Fox. He said grateful customers have posted on the Newton store’s Facebook page after paying only 9 cents per gallon and he has heard that people have paid the lowest possible, 1 cent per gallon. “We will get an email that SAVER | 3A
mond said Wellik took the request of two additional firefighters to Newton City Administrator Bob Knabel, but the staffing requests were not included in the final budget request to the council. Richmond said his request is much more centered on personnel. “My email had nothing to do with vehicles,” Richmond said. “We’re very grateful to see the trucks clear the first hurdle (of the budget process). But we also need to gain some more flexibility as we attempt to maintain a high level of community safety.” UNION | 3A

The Newton Wellness Coalition hosted its kickoff event at the Newton High School Friday night. During the boys’ and girls’ basketball games, volunteers ran on treadmills and ellipticals to help raise awareness for wellness activities. Robyn Friedman, NWC member, said she was pleased with the general feedback following the event. “It went great,” Friedman said. “We had great participation from all of our exercisers and we had great publicity from the
high school announcer during the games, so we could get our name out there a little bit more.” This is the second time the group has hosted the event. Last year, 30 “local celebrities” participated and Friedman said the turnout was similar on Friday. Many members of the Newton Community School District were among the “local celebrities” who took part in the event. “I thought there was some good enthusiasm again,” Friedman said. “It’s always fun to see people exercising in a different way.”
