It’s 80s night for the Newton Wellness Coalition kick off event By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton Wellness Coalition picked an 80s theme for its kickoff event, set to happen at the Newton varsity basketball games Friday. The group will once again have Newton residents working out during both of the games on treadmills and ellipticals located in the work out space above the gym. “We’re looking at an 80s theme for the kids, dressing up like Richard Simmons, headbands and that good stuff,” Tom Vanderlann, coalition member said. “Big hair, headband, short shorts, tank tops or something along those lines.” During the girls’ halftime, members of the

coalition will invite volunteers to go out on the court and run through a warm up routine. Jumping jacks, cross-overs and seal claps are among the exercises to be performed to help promote wellness in the community and get people out of their seats. In between the girls and boys games, coalition members will head back to the court to prep the stands for in-game actions during the boys game. Potential in-game activities will take place when a three-point basket is made, free-throw shots and if a player gets fouled, in hopes of getting the crowd up out of their seats and moving during the game. In mid-December, the Iowa Department of Education released a statement that made it clear starting school before the week of Sept. 1 will be tough. Last week, the department released criteria it will use to determine which districts, if any, will be granted waivers to start school earlier than the week of Sept. 1, per a state law. The DOE, which regularly granted all but a handful of waivers each year, released evidencebased criteria each school must meet in order to be considered for a 2015-16 Sept. 1 waiver. The deadline for waiver applications is March 15. The Newton Community School District voted at its Jan.

12 regular meeting to pursue a waiver. Colfax-Mingo and Lynville-Sully seem uncertain. Newton began school on Aug. 19 in 2014. NCSD Superintendent Bob Callaghan said in December that students who are dually enrolled in both high school and college classes will be one of the groups who are impacted the most. Callaghan pointed out Friday that the DOE has determined that dual enrollment conflicts would not qualify as “significant negative educational impact.” A letter from DOE director Brad A. Buck was sent Dec.12 to school administrators and other educators across the state, announcing the department is honoring Gov. Terry E. Branstad’s request for the DOE to no longer automatically grant waivers.

Lace up, cool out

Branstad said in his letter that the state fair is one of the activities that cause students to miss school in August. The 2015 Iowa State Fair is set for Aug. 13-23. A few Iowa State Legislator counter-moves are in the works, including a bill that would move the statewide start date to Aug. 15. Jasper County’s public school districts are of varying sizes, and might end up approaching the waiver differently, if at all. Here are some of the items the DOE says it might consider: requiring from districts: • Evidence that students would be adversely affected by a Sept. 1 start “as demonstrated by valid and reliable measures of local academic achievement and/or learning environment.” • The percentage of the student body that would be negatively affected by starting Sept. 1 and the depth of the impact, and

Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Runners take off following the starting gun at Saturday’s Skiff Medical Center Pink Nose/Blue Toes 5K run/walk. Skiff Foundation Event’s Manager Leisa Zylstra said 63 athletes took part in the fourth annual winter morning jaunt through Newton. Without last year’s sleet and snow covering the course, more than $1,000 was raised during preregistration and a final tally including day-of registrants is expected early this week. All proceeds from the event go toward equipment and technology purchases at Skiff.
