The Newton Fire Department responded at 12:30 p.m. to the building at 604 W. Fourth St. N. as the flames were on the interior walls and ceiling. Fire Marshal Mike Knoll said the

cause of the fire was a fluorescent light fixture on the second floor of the three-story building. Knoll said the fire caused $75,000 in damage. There were no injuries reported Wednesday. The Vernon Company resumed work Thursday morning. A call to the company was not immediately returned. Contact Kayla Langmaid at 641-792-3121 ext. 6513 or klangmaid@newtondailynews.com

Little League plays hard ball at Parks Board

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News Newton Parks Superintendent Nathan Unsworth explains the ADA improvements at the ball fields at Agnes Patterson Park to the Newton Parks Board on Wednesday.

Walk ways, parking, restroom accessibility addressed By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Concerns about the proposed ADA improvements at the ball fields at Agnes Patterson Park drove discussions during the Newton Park Board meeting on Wednesday. Little League representatives Suzanne Williams and Matt Holmes voiced opinions and needs for the little league as the season is set to begin in the coming months. The proposed improvements include a walk way connecting the two little league fields to the

parking lot north of the adjacent softball fields and continued to the northern most softball fields. Six new handicap parking spaces would be created in the parking lot and the 20 foot gravel path would also be paved. Finally, a pit toilet would be added south of the little league fields near the hike and bike trail. Director of Public Works Keith Laube said the timeline for the project would have the walkways and handicapped parking spaces given first priority, with the pit toilet coming later when possible additional funding was acquired. It was at that point Holmes voiced

an issue with the priority schedule. “If you’re going to install this and do this bathroom next year, then being blunt about it, you need to suck it up, spend the extra money and put it plumbed. It makes no sense to spend $53,000 total (approximately $18,000 for the pit toilet) if you’re going to stall until next year when you can spend $35,000 to $38,000 up front,” Holmes said. “If you’re going to install it you need to do it the right way the first time, not do a temporary fix.” The idea of a pit toilet was introduced not only to serve as an added amenity to the little league crowd, but also as a facility for off season park users to utilize when the plumbed bathrooms are closed. A Grimes couple is facing charges of suborning perjury in relation to a child end a n g e rment and sex abuse case in Jasper County. Christopher Riggs L. Riggs, 28, formerly of Newton, is already facing charges of child endangerment and second-degree sex abuse after he was arrested June 16, 2015. Riggs along with is girlfriend, Heather L. Hoover, 31, now face two counts of suborning perjury after police say Riggs and Hoover picked up two juveniles Sept. 1, 2016 and transported them to the Jasper County Attorney’s office for deposition. Police believe the purpose of the deposition was for the two juveniles to provide false testimony in an effort to assist Riggs’ defense. According to witness statements, Riggs and Hoover repeatedly pressured and coerced the

juveniles into providing false testimony and provided them with the story they wanted them to tell in deposition. The juveniles later admitted Riggs and Hoover did drive them and tell them what to say. Riggs and Hoover were both arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail on March 10. In regard to the sex abuse and child endangerment case, Riggs is accused of punching a 2-year-old child in the genitals, hitting a 4-yearold child in the mouth as well as sexual abusing a 11-year-old child. According to police reports, the child’s mother said Riggs punched the 2-year-old in the genitals, causing a bruise. When officers spoke to the 11-year-old victim, she said Riggs hit the 4-year-old in the mouth, causing a swollen, split lip and loose tooth. When asked by officers if he had ever done anything to her, the 11-year-old victim said three to four weeks ago before his arrest that he sexually assaulted her. Riggs allegedly told the victim that she could not tell anyone and he said, “I could go to jail for a long time.” Riggs’ trial is currently scheduled for May 24. County purchases commercial-grade lawn mower By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News An informational discussion took place as the Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a new commercial-grade lawn mower. Five bids were received from businesses across the county with the board selecting a John Deere Z915E 54” mower for $8,780 from VanWall Equipment, Inc. in Colfax.

“The hard part about bidding different brands of mowers is you kind of jump all over the board with either the size, motor size and/ or the bagger system,” buildings and grounds Director Adam Sparks. The one thing we noticed that we liked best, the bagger system we had on our old mower was just a two bagger system. The only bagger system of all five of these brands that really upped it size was John Deere. They offer a three bag, four bushel system

compared to everybody else.” The decision came down between the John Deere and the low bid of a Hustler 54” mower for $7,482 from Smith’s Quality Rental in Newton. The board ultimately went with the John Deere because of its added features and size. “The difference with that was (the Hustler) has the smallest motor and the smallest bagger system,” Sparks said. “It was a little hard for me to decide because if we

a mower and keeping it until the end of its time is really the way to go. When we buy this mower, ideally we would have seven to 10 years until it either gets to the point were we can trade it in and get a little bit of money back for it or drive it until it is almost unusable,” Sparks said. “When the grass would get a little taller, you could make two swipes on that mower and the two bags would be full. were going to go off of price, Smith’s Rental was the lowest but if were going to go off of over all use and best options with the mower, than to me, the John Deere with the three bagger and holds twice the gas.” Supervisor Doug Cupples said the difference in price between the two mowers was about $1,300 up front. He asked Sparks how long a mower typically lasts and what work it will do. “We have found that buyer
