A vote of support was given to the Iowa Traffic Incident Management Training Center proposal at Tuesday’s Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting. The board made no official decision on the training center coming to Jasper County but gave the county attorney the go ahead to begin discussion with Iowa Department of Transportation officials. The proposal, presented to the board at its last meeting on Feb. 28, includes constructing a training facility that allows responders including law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency medical services, towing facilitators and any other entity that may be a part of a traffic incident to train in real life scenarios in a safe setting. The ground selected is located south of the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office on the 36 acres that previously housed the county care facility. “What we want to do is open up the door
so you ( Jasper County Attorney M i k e Jacobsen) can communicate between Jacobsen with the state and between the two of you come up with a reasonable, suitable contract,” supervisor Doug Cupples said. During the discussion, Cupples asked Jasper County Conservation Director Keri Van Zante about her opinion on the proposal. The center is slated to be located across from a proposed future conservation project. “It seems like there could be potential for good things that could happen with sharing the facilities and I like the idea that they are thinking of doing green energy to match what we are doing,” Van Zante said. Scott Marler, director of the Traffic Management Center for the IDOT, said previously he is very interested in IDOT | 3A
Monday super storm levels Newton man machine shed west of Monroe arrested for child endangerment By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A Newton man is facing child endangerment charges following an investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office stemming from an incident in December. Lance K. Tyree, 47, is accused of abusing a 5-year-old boy between Tyree Dec. 14 and Dec. 18, 2016. Tyree allegedly used a closed fist to strike the victim’s buttocks, which left a large red mark, according to court documents. The kindergartner’s school counselor told police the victim has spoken about being struck by Tyree for not eating or not listening to him. The counselor told police the victim said he
got spanked often, and he said he had been struck on the head by Tyree, causing him to fall to the floor. The victim also told the counselor he has been locked in his room and was not allowed to come out to use the restroom or to get food or a drink, according to court documents. The red spot on the victim’s buttocks was discovered Dec. 19 by the victim’s relative and it was still red on Dec. 22 and began to bruise. Multiple reports had been previously made to the Iowa Department of Human Services in reference to possible child abuse at Tyree’s residence in Newton. Tyree was arrested Friday and taken to the Jasper County Jail where he was released on $5,000 bond. Contact Kayla Langmaid at 641-792-3121 ext. 6513 or klangmaid@newtondailynews.com
Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News A giant pile of wood and metal is all that is left of a large machine shed located on Highway F70 west of Monroe after Monday’s storm blew it from its foundation. Pieces of steel were twisted in the straight-line winds when the machine shed was lifted from its foundation. A lot of clean up work is needed for the machine shed, which was flipped on its top. For the most part, debris from the wreckage steered clear of the roadway during the storm. No one was injured.
