By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As the Morris Community YMCA gears up for its grand opening Saturday, it already has started offering classes and a place to work out to the 856 active members who have joined as of Thursday.

“People are signing up daily,” Membership Director Sarah Porzel said. “It’s going good.”

The Morris YMCA’s official grand opening celebration and open house is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. A ribbon cutting was held Thursday evening at the new location, 320 Wauponsee St. Chris Rodgers and her family are among of the 368 families who joined and started working out with their premier membership. The YMCA waived application fees and opened the doors to those members at 5 a.m. Monday.

“We joined as a family because it was a great deal,” Rodgers said. “I was paying $20 a month for just me at another gym. I can pay $40 at the YMCA and all five of us can go.”

Rodgers said she had her first workout Monday and has gone daily since. She said she loves the workout equipment offered. She also is excited for the children’s activities offered that her 13-year-old daughter, Macy, can take advantage of.

Rodgers’ sophomore daughter, McKenzie, decided to start her workout routine on Wednesday, since Morris Community High School canceled classes because of the weather. She found herself back on the equipment Thursday when school was out again.

“I used to work out in the basement. I’ve not gone to a gym before,” she said. “It’s so very, very nice.”

McKenzie hopes to make exercise a regular part of her life and hopes to get to the YMCA at least three times a week.

Executive Director Missy Durkin showed new members around Thursday, emphasizing that it was a temporary home and the organization is excited to move forward with a new structure in the future.

Adam Peterson of Morris joined the YMCA along with his family to give them a place to remain active. He said he wanted to join a gym, but it was the cost of the Y membership, along with the kids’ corner, that made his family decide now was the right time.

While he’s working up a sweat on the new equipment, he likes that his children, Olivia and Landon, can spend time in the kids’ corner playing games and drawing.

“The family atmosphere helps, and it will add to our fitness level,” Peterson said. “Ol-

ivia has participated in some of the camps, and she loves them.”

He also likes that while the facility is busy, it hasn’t been too crowded to get to the machines he wants to exercise on.

Morris High School senior Taylor Cole said she thinks the YMCA will be good for the town.

“This is my second time coming to work out,” she said Thursday. “I like it so far, and I plan on attending boot camp.”

Crash causes shut down to River Bridge traffic Thursday morning

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A two-vehicle crash shut down traffic on the Illinois River Bridge just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said a call came in about 7:55 a.m. for a traffic crash. A vehicle heading south lost control and crossed the median into the northbound lane, hitting an-

other vehicle head-on at the bottom of the bridge, he said.

The driver of the northbound vehicle was extricated by the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, he said. That driver suffered injuries, including possible broken bones, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

Both drivers are from the Morris area, Callahan said, and both were taken to Morris Hospital.

The driver of the southbound vehicle reported she hit a bump and lost control, the sheriff said. Traffic was shut down on the bridge for less than an hour and caused traffic to back up.

No charges have been filed, Callahan said, and the department is still investigating. The incident was not weather-related.

The sheriff’s department was assisted by Morris Police with traffic control.

Committee recommends additional attorney position to County Board

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland received a recommendation Thursday from the Grundy County Law & Justice/ Facilities Committee to increase the number of assistant state’s attorneys from five to six, which will require board approval.

“It would reduce the work load of our attorneys,” Helland said Thursday afternoon.

“We have staff still working at 6:30 p.m., and it’s not fair.”

Helland made the presentation for the additional attorney to the committee at a meeting Thursday evening. The state’s attorney’s office has the money to pay the first year and half of salary and benefits from the state’s attorney’s fee fund and the drug asset forfeiture fund for fiscal 2015, he said, so he is not asking the county to budget for the new position.

The additional attorney would be assigned to handle

drug court, half of the misdemeanor cases including all drug cases, juvenile abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency and felony drug cases, Helland said.

The hiring of a new assistant will allow Helland to change assistant attorney Chris Dearth duties to half of the misdemeanor cases and the civil division.

Helland said the move is essential for the office to continue to assist with serving the county board and county officials.

“We have come in under budget and have saved the county tens of thousands of dollars by our competent handling of civil cases,” Helland said.

He told the committee assistant attorney Perry Rudman has health issues and expects him to retire in a couple of years, so he wants to be prepared for a smooth transition when that happens.

He brought up the issues the county has had with the

human resources and administrator positions and said this could be avoided in his office.

By hiring a new assistant, it would allow Dearth to be cross-trained by Rudman, so he could take over when Rudman retires.

Committee member Debra Jo Kinsella asked what the state’s attorney fees were earmarked for when they were created.

Helland said they weren’t earmarked for any specific use, and could be used to pay salary of the new position.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter asked if the state’s attorney’s office has seen an increase, decrease or if the caseload has remained the same.

Helland said while it varies, it remains pretty steady overall.

Kinsella asked Helland what would happen to the funds if the position was not approved; he responded the funds would sit in the accounts.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Crews put out a small fire Thursday morning at First Midwest Bank in Morris.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said an engine arrived at the bank, 220 W. Main St., within minutes of receiving a call that reported smoke in the building.

“A small fire was on the stove in the basement of the building,” Steffes said. “The first engine on the scene extinguished the fire. We were at Station One, so basically when we walked out the door, we were on scene.”

Local First Midwest Bank President Tom Tesdal said the commercial division on the second floor remained open for business, but smoke on the first floor and basement caused them to close the teller line all day Thursday. Safety deposit boxes still were acces-

sible to customers throughout the day.

Customers who required teller services Thursday were directed to the Bedford Road branch in Morris or any other First Midwest Bank for services.

Jim Roolf, corporate relations officer and president of First Midwest Bank, said the bank plans to reopen the teller line today.

“Most of the damage is in the basement,” Tesdal said.

“The fire department did a good job getting the fire out and the smoke dispersed. You’d never want to go through this, but the fire department knew what they were doing and it’s nice to know they are on top of their game.”

Steffes said it’s unknown how a burner on the electric stove turned on, but it caused the paint-like finish on the cabinets to catch on fire, which spread to other items on the break room countertop, including plastics, which caused a great amount of black smoke.

“We are estimating about $10,000 in damages, $1,000 to the cabinets, the rest in smoke damage,” Steffes said.

A second piece of legislation that didn’t move Thursday, but could come up at another time, involved the merging of the comptroller and treasurer’s offices. Before her death, Topinka often talked about how the merger would save the state money.

SPRINGFIELD – Local lawmakers were split along party lines on legislation approved Thursday requiring a special election in 2016 to replace the late Judy Baar Topinka.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, questioned the constitutionality of a special election. He was not at Thursday’s special session, as he was out of state, and therefore didn’t vote on the special election.

Anthony said in a statement a special election goes against the state’s constitution, which provides that “elected officers of the Executive Branch shall hold office for four years and be elected in non-presidential years.”

“The Illinois Constitution is pretty clear,” Anthony said in the statement. “There’s a vacancy coming on Jan. 12 and Gov.-elect [Bruce] Rauner has the authority to fill that vacancy. The term of a comptroller, as well as all executive branch officers, is set for four

years.”

The legislation passed the Illinois House and Senate down party lines, but not before heated debate.

Judy Baar Topinka died last month after complications from a stroke, just weeks after winning a second fouryear term. Rauner, who will be sworn in Monday, has said he’s opposed to the idea of a special election. But the person he recently appointed – Joliet native Leslie Munger – said she doesn’t mind at all.

Munger, who lost in November to Democratic state Rep. Carol Sente for a seat in Chicago’s northwest suburbs, said “assuming she’s in good standing,” she plans to run for comptroller in 2016.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill. I look at this as, ‘I’ve got a very big job to do,’ ” Munger said.

“I’m going to focus on doing a great job and I’m going to hit the ground running. I’m not worried about 2016 right now.”

Community-wide effort makes Christmas possible MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – This Christmas, 878 children from low-income families received gifts under their tree from the help of 63 organizations and individuals in Grundy County.

The children, from 367 families in need, were provided with gifts from the community, according to a news release from We Care of Grundy County. In 2013, 706 children from 287 families were helped.

“The task of caring for Grundy County families in need at Christmas is too large for any organization to handle alone,” Denise Gaska, ex-

ecutive director of We Care, said in the release. “But when each organization and individual takes care of the number of families they can comfortably manage with their time and resources, we can succeed in accomplishing our common Christmas mission – making sure that every child has at least one gift under the

tree on Christmas morning.

There’s no one organization that can do it alone – we all make the Christmas miracle happen when we work together.”

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Through We Care’s annual “Adopt-A-Family” program, families in need apply for help with Christmas gifts for their children and food for their holiday meal. Families must fill out an application and provide We Care

with proof of residency and of their income for the previous 30 days. We Care thoroughly screens each applicant for income eligibility. Families then are placed in the pool of families available for “adoption.” Organizations and individuals that want to help families in need contact We Care to “adopt” those families and do their best to fulfill the families’ needs.

There also were 84 families who received help with just food for their Christmas dinner. Bethlehem Lutheran Church provided food for 12 of those families, St Mary’s Church helped two, and the

rest were served by We Care.

“We Care would like to thank all of its partners who helped spread Christmas cheer to those in Grundy County who might otherwise have had little to smile about on Christmas morning. As a result of our combined efforts, more than 441 families were provided with some sort of Christmas assistance this year,” according to the release.

COAL CITY – Jerry McDowell has spent a lot of time on a baseball diamond. Between Coal City Middle School and Coal City High School, he has been coaching for 52 seasons. And, in this day and age, a coach doesn’t stick around that long unless he is successful.

On Jan. 24, the Illinois Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame will honor McDowell’s success by inducting him at a dinner held at the Westin Yorktown Center in Lombard. Joining McDowell in the Class of 2014 will be Paul Hoel of Hinsdale South, Todd Hopkins of Ottawa Marquette, Denny Short of Waubonsie Valley, Jared Voss of Joliet Catholic Academy and Brian Wujcik of Richards.

McDowell has been coaching the Coalers since the spring of 1996, and also has been the coach at Coal City Middle School since 1988, having started his career at Gardner Grade School in 1984. In that time, he has amassed a 1,028-374 record, getting his 1,000th with last year when Coal City beat Illiana Christian on April 24. His Coal City Middle School teams won state titles in 1996, 1997 and 2013, while the Coalers advanced to the Class A state tournament in 2002 and the state finals in Class 2A in 2008, finishing fourth.

Being the head coach means that McDowell stresses the team before the individual, and he is quick to give credit to his players and coaching staff. Greg Wills has been his assistant for all 20 years at the high school, while Nate Wills has been the sophomore coach at Coal City for nine years and has been his assistant at the middle school for 12.

“It’s definitely an honor,” he said about his induction.

“I am pretty ecstatic about it.

It’s nice to be recognized for the time that we’ve put in. My assistants coach with me in junior high and in high school, so we’ve known these kids from sixth grade until they graduate. We’re able to teach them how we want them to play from day one.

McDowell is a man who never tires of baseball. One would think that after coaching a middle school season in the fall and a high school season in the spring, he might welcome a chance to not look at a baseball for a while. So far, that hasn’t happened.

“It’s a long season,” he admits. “You start the high school season in March, and

that goes through June. Then there’s the summer season, and that’s June and July. Then the middle school starts in August and goes into September and, if you are lucky, October.

There’s only three months off without baseball, but the kids will start itching to throw a ball around in February or so.

“I do love it. It’s become part of my routine, and I love doing it. I hope that it rubs off on some of the kids I coach.”

Coal City athletic director Dan Hutchings has had an interesting perspective on McDowell for the last year or so.

After working with him in the athletic department for many years, Hutchings currently has a son, Payton, playing for McDowell at the middle school.

“What I like about Jerry

as a member of the athletic department is that he has a laid-back style, and he preaches small ball,” Hutching said.

“In order to play that type of baseball, you have to be wellschooled in the fundamentals.

“What I like about Jerry as a parent is that he preaches fundamentals. If you do those little things right, the big things will take care of themselves.”

McDowell’s teams have had success against big-name pitchers in the past, as well.

Tanner Roark of Wilmington now pitches for the Washington Nationals. When he was in high school, his record in four years against Coal City was 4-4. In his senior year, Wilmington went 40-1. The one loss was to Coal City. Another cur-

rent big-leaguer, J.A. Happ, pitched for Spring Valley Hall, and McDowell’s team beat him, 10-0.

It’s those fundamentals that helped his clubs beat those pitchers, and they come into play much more now with the way the game has changed due to equipment. The day of the live ball and bat are over, and the emphasis is more in manufacturing runs.

“Back in 2001 and 2002, we were hitting 45-50 home runs as a team,” McDowell said.

“This year, I think we hit three in junior high and six all year in high school. You can’t just wait for the home run any more. You have to be able to move runners over and take advantage when the other team makes mistakes.”

Bears Pro Bowl offensive lineman Kyle Long also took to Twitter to express his excitement over Pace’s hiring.

“Just heard the news. Awesome,” Long tweeted Thursday. “Can’t wait to get to work.”

One agent who has worked with Pace called the move an “incredible hire” and added that Pace has “good people skills” and is an “incredible evaluator.” Another referred to Pace as a “great guy, very knowledgable.”

The Bears will introduce Pace, the sixth general manager in franchise history, at a news conference at 11 a.m. today at Halas Hall.

Pace was one of four candidates who interviewed for the role, along with Chris Ballard, Lake Dawson and Brian Gaine. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pace was in on the team’s interview with head coach candidate Todd Bowles.

Pace the right choice for Bears general manager position George McCaskey stopped the presses Thursday with the hiring of Ryan Pace as the Bears general manager.

Bears fans can celebrate.

McCaskey got it right, even with the wrong choice right in front of him in Chris Ballard, a choice most fans would have accepted without realizing the problem.

Pace and Ballard are

similar candidates with near identical qualifications.

They are both bright young executives with deep roots in personnel, excellent people skills and the political savvy to navigate the treacherous waters of NFL back rooms.

The key difference is Pace comes with absolutely no connection to the Bears while almost all of Ballard’s

Rose needs to show trust in coaching staff, teammates, himself

It’s frustrating, it’s inconsistent, and for Bulls guard Derrick Rose, it’s been a real head-shaker through the first 36 games of the regular season.

Oh, there have been moments. Ask John Wall, who watched Rose go all playground on him two weeks ago in the nation’s capital, taking the game over late and dropping 25 on the Wizards All-Star. Before that, there was a Dec. 12, win over Portland in which Rose scored 31, shooting 14 for 24 from the

field.

Plenty of splash plays to bring you back to 2011. Unfortunately, not enough to keep you there.

Two season-ending knee surgeries for Rose have left us all at this step. Where it goes now?

Well, that’s on No. 1.

Rose admittedly has been pacing himself through the early minutes of games. And far too often lately, he only seems to flip a switch when his pride is being challenged. Wall did it a few weeks back, while fellow Chicagoan Patrick Beverley pulled that out of Rose on Monday.

A mentality that is nowhere

to be found in the Book of Thibodeau.

“I think you have to have the mindset that you don’t take possessions off and you fight through everything,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said, when asked if he thought Rose was picking his spots too often.

“And you do it day after day after day. That’s what championship teams do. If that’s what we aspire to, that’s what we have to do.

“In terms of where [Rose] is right now, I think he’s making steady progress. He hasn’t shot the ball well, but he’s run the team fairly well. You have to understand that he’s been

out for 2½ years. When you get away from that competition for 2½ years it doesn’t come back in a week. You have to compete in practice, you have to compete getting yourself ready, and you have to keep going.”

Words that Rose doesn’t seem to be hearing all the time.

Forget the 25.5 (28 for 110) shooting percentage over the past six games. Sure, not enough attacking the rim, too many errant jumpers. Not one teammate is upset with that, however, because for the most part the film has shown that the decisions have been tolerable.

“Any teammate that takes good shots and is not forcing

anything – you always have to be more than OK with it,” Pau Gasol said, when asked about Rose’s slump. “Just to continue to encourage taking good shots, try and take better shots, high-percentage shots. Get more into the lane and get yourself going that way. Just find ways to get yourself going and more into a rhythm.”

This from a man who played with Kobe Bryant, so was wellversed in having his patience tested.

No, the concerns with Rose are still trust. Not trust that a dominant guard is still in there, but that Rose will let it come out.

Another day, another comptroller We don’t know what shoe size the late Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka wore, but her replacement has some big shoes to fill.

That goes for her 24-day replacement, Jerry Stermer, named Dec. 19 by outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn to fill the remainder of Topinka’s first term.

It also goes for her four-year replacement, Leslie Munger of Lincolnshire, named Monday by incoming Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner to fill all of Topinka’s second term, which will begin Monday.

Whether Munger, 58, a former corporate executive and unsuccessful 2014 legislative candidate, serves the full four years won’t be immediately known.

For one thing, Quinn called a special session of the Illinois General Assembly for Thursday to hash out a proposal to have a special election for comptroller in conjunction with the 2016 election. The winner would serve out the remaining two years of Topinka’s second term.

For another, Rauner and Munger support the consolidation of the comptroller’s office with the state treasurer’s office, so that the check-writing duties and investment duties are combined in one streamlined office – a stance, by the way, that Topinka supported. It would take a constitutional amendment, approved by voters in 2016 or later, to become a reality.

Be that as it may, Topinka’s strength as an elected official was derived from her extensive experience in state government and her independence. She knew what she was talking about, and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Munger, who grew up in the Joliet area, and is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University, has experience in director and management positions at Proctor & Gamble and Helene Curtis Industries.

That experience, while different from Topinka’s, should serve her well.

But Topinka owed her position to the voters. Munger will owe hers to the new governor.

Whether that relationship works to the advantage of the people won’t be known for a while.

Rauner had this to say about his appointee: “Leslie has always been laser-focused on fiscal and economic issues, and as comptroller, she will do everything within her power to help fix our state’s broken finances.”

Here’s hoping the new comptroller can fill Topinka’s shoes with similar competence and independence.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

The broken soul at the heart of ‘Unbroken’ For decades, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s World Wide Pictures unit produced many films with titles like “Souls in Conflict,” “The Heart is a Rebel,” “The Restless Ones” and “The Prodigal.”

Critics relentlessly noted the formula that drove most of these films: The sins of the main character would cause a crisis, then – somehow – he would hear a Graham sermon and be born again. Roll credits.

When Louis Zamperini told his life story – a rebellious childhood, Olympic glory, then the horrors of World War II, including 47 days adrift in the shark-infested Pacific, followed by two hellish years in prison – this was the climactic scene. He had been soaking his nightmares in alcohol, and he was facing divorce and obsessed with killing his torturers.

Graham said: “Here tonight, there’s a drowning man” at the breaking point, someone “lost in the sea of life.” It took a sermon or two, but Zamperini surrendered.

That’s what millions read in “Unbroken,” the bestselling page-turner by Laura Hillenbrand, but that scene isn’t in Angelina Jolie’s new “Unbroken” film. The director has publicly said that Zamperini, who died last summer at age 97, embraced her decision to skip the Christian specifics and offer a message of “universal” faith and forgiveness.

“The key to the whole story is

While he has chosen not to see her film, Graham said it appears Jolie told a spectacular story, while ignoring its climactic chapters.

Thus, the Graham team has released its own film about Zamperini, including references to the years of testimonies he shared in Graham crusades. The documentary, “Louis Zamperini: Captured by Grace,” has been posted at the BillyGraham.org website.

“We’re not talking about a Billy Graham movie here,” said Franklin Graham. “We’re talking about real life and, most importantly, what happened in this man’s real life. All of our lives are going to spiral down if we don’t grab a life rope. That’s what Louis Zamperini did and his life was changed for eternity.”

In particular, Graham said he wished that Jolie had been willing to include the dramatic episode in which, soon after his conversion, Zamperini returned to Japan to

forgive – face to face – as many of his prison guards as possible. “You can just imagine that scene in your mind. ... It’s like she forgot the punch line,” he said.

The Jolie film does include references to spiritual crisis and prayer. A self-professed agnostic, the superstar actress and director told reporters at one press event: “If you were looking for symbolism and miracles in the film, you will see them.” Thus, during the movie’s sea ordeal, Zamperini prays: “If you get me through this, if you answer my prayers, I swear, I’ll dedicate my whole life to you. I’ll do whatever you want. Please.”

But in the Graham documentary, the real man stressed that, at first, he didn’t keep that promise. The unbroken man, in reality, came home spiritually broken.

“Yes, I had a lot of great times, a lot of great experience, a lot of escape from death, but I still didn’t like my life after the war. I came home alive. God kept His promise. I didn’t keep mine,” said Zamperini, five years before his death. “The heart of this story is when I found Christ as my Savior. That’s the heart of my whole life.”

In bridge, though, you do have to worry about second things, especially second suits. In this deal, for example, how should South play in four hearts after West leads the spade king and continues the suit when his partner encourages with the ten?

In the auction, South’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing, which artificially announced at least game-invitational strength. Without three hearts, North rebid two diamonds.

South mentioned his second suit, which instigated a game force. And when North bid three hearts to show high-honor-doubleton, South decided to play in four hearts. (If he had continued with four clubs, North would have raised to five clubs, a contract that would have made easily with the trumps 3-2.)

Four hearts needed careful handling. After ruffing the second spade, if South had drawn trumps, he would have turned it into a no-trump contract and gone several down.

When declarer has a two-suiter and needs to gain tricks from the second suit, it is usually correct to play on the side suit first. So South led a club to dummy’s king, returned a club to his ace, and played a third club to West’s queen. East discarded a diamond.

When West led his spade queen, South ruffed and played off dummy’s top diamonds. East ruffed the second, but had no riposte.

If he had returned a heart, declarer would have drawn trumps and cashed his club winners.

When East played another spade, South crossruffed home.
