KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – After 43 years in public service, Geneva Community Development Director Dick Untch has decided to retire, according to a city news release.

“It has been a privilege to work with so many Genevans who share a passion for the city and are so willing to work on making this special place even better,” Untch stated in the release.

“Helping shape the city’s vision for the future – and seeing the vision come to life in new development projects – has been particularly rewarding for me.”

will be promoted to the position when Untch’s retirement becomes effective Jan. 16. His annual salary will be $92,302.

Untch joined the city in 1998.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said in a statement that the city has been fortunate to have had his leadership and expertise.

“Because of his professionalism, he has been the guiding force to make sure

our community has received the highest quality development possible,” she said.

His accomplishments include guiding site planning for Geneva Commons, Dodson Place and the Geneva Business Park; negotiating annexation agreements for major land developments along the city’s western edge; and leading the formation of the city’s comprehensive plan, bikeway plan, historic preservation plan, downtown master plan, housing plan and East State Street corridor design guidelines, according to the release.

DeGroot has worked as a city planner in Geneva since 2008. The release indicates he was previously a planning assistant with West Chicago

and a planning and zoning official with the Winnebago County Regional Planning and Economic Development Department.

DeGroot said in a statement he is looking forward to the challenges ahead and working with the community toward a vibrant future.

“Geneva is an excellent community to work for in the planning profession,” DeGroot said. “The community is engaged and consistently looks forward while working hard to preserve all that makes Geneva a unique place to live, work and visit.”

Paul Evans, who has served as Geneva’s business development specialist, is the new city planner, according to the release.

LOCAL BRIEFS ‘Mom & Me’ night set for Jan. 16 GENEVA – A “Mom & Me” night to help Three Fires Council Boy Scouts with their pinewood derby cars will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 16, at Home Depot, 2111 S. Randall Road, Geneva. “We wanted to help single moms and moms whose partners are unavailable to prepare a pinewood derby car for their Scout,” Geneva Home Depot store manager Jeff Albertini said in a news release.

“So, we’re partnering with the local Boy Scout council. Our employees will use our tools to cut a seven-inch block of pine into a winning race car.

Judge denies motion to dismiss Geneva murder case

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County circuit judge on Thursday denied the county public defender’s motion to dismiss a Geneva murder case.

Kane County Judge James Hallock made his ruling one day after hearing arguments for and against the motion to dismiss the indictment

against Shadwick King of Geneva.

King, 47, was indicted in September on two c o u n t s o f Shadwick King first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen.

Hallock’s decision means that King’s jury trial still is

headed for a Feb. 2 start date.

King has remained in the Kane County Jail since July 8 on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

Hallock made his decision after reviewing the case law submitted by Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress and Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams to support their arguments. Childress wrote in her motion to dismiss that

Fox River Trail to have limited access Fox River Trail users may experience limited access between St. Charles and South Elgin during the next two months, because of a ComEd project to replace nearby electrical lines.

A contractor will be working to replace electrical wires that run along the Fox River, adjacent to the trail. The Fox River Trail might be closed intermittently during the project. the indictment does not indicate how exactly King “by means of asphyxia” caused the death of his wife, Kathleen.

“The court finds it’s not necessary to allege the

means or the instrument used in making the assault, therefore the defendant’s motion to dismiss for failure to state an offense is denied,” Hallock said.

Childress on Thursday also filed a motion for a bill of particulars to obtain more details regarding the state’s charges against King, according to court records.

The case’s next court date is Thursday.

Horse dies in Maple Park; owner cited

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kane County Animal Control has cited the owner of a horse found dead on Wednesday morning, according to a statement.

Animal control wardens were alerted about the situation and went to the property, where a dead horse was found. There were 10 other horses on the property, but their care was otherwise considered to be in compliance with the law, according to the statement.

The owner was cited with failure to provide sufficient food, water, shelter and pro-

tection from the weather according to the statement.

Kane County Animal Control Administrator Brett Youngsteadt said the office would not release the name of the horse’s owner, nor the address, but said it could be released through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The statement also included a reminder to pet owners, “We are in a season of extreme weather conditions, therefore we would like to remind you to be cautious with pets and domestic animals that are outside. We recommend that all pets have access to adequate food, water and shelter.”

NEW ACTIVITY AT THE MALL Mini-doughnut business among new attractions at The Quad St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – January is usually a quiet time on the retail front, but The Quad St. Charles officials said they are working to keep their building active with seasonal offerings and a new mini-doughnut business.

An all-ages Jolly Express Jr. ride is open every Friday and weekend this month outside the interior Carson Pirie Scott entrance, said Nicole Kneeland-Woods, director of business development at the mall, formerly known as the Charlestowne Mall. The mall’s annual temporary H&R Block location also opened its doors to customers this week on the lower level near Von Maur.

The mall for the first time hosted a holiday craft expo on select dates in November and December, Kneeland-Woods said.

“We’re constantly working on it and looking for new ideas,” she said.

Kneeland-Woods is recruiting small business entrepreneurs, and the mall continues to have discussions with potential tenants for the redeveloped mall, Project Developer Chuck May said.

May said the mall’s grand reopening likely will occur sometime during fall 2016.

Exterior work at the mall site began in summer 2014 and a groundbreaking ceremony was in September.

Construction crews will complete outside re-paving and also begin interior work this spring, May said.

The doughnuts are named after Patel’s youngest daughter, 2, and they come in white, cinnamon or chocolate cocoa powdered sugar flavors. On Jan. 4 he unveiled a doughnut sundae with a six-mini doughnut base.

In addition to mini-doughnuts, coffee, chips and soda, Patel plans to expand his offerings to include items like cheesecake and funnel cake using his 15 years of experience in food and catering.

“I’ve already established a few loyal customers already,”

Patel said, noting that the mall attracts many walkers that like to buy morning coffee at his food stand.

Dana Christensen’s two children and their friends on Thursday enjoyed some samples at the stand. The group was headed into Charlestowne 18 to see a movie because it was a snow day.

Christensen, a Geneva resident, said she will go to Von Maur and the theater sometimes but otherwise doesn’t frequent the mall located at 3800 E. Main St. on the far east side of St. Charles. She said

more stores would convince her to shop there.

“I hope they do something great with it,” Christensen said. “It used to be so burgeoning.”

Christensen recommended mall officials pursue more activity-based offerings for children. Kneeland-Woods confirmed she is in talks with Patel to re-open the mini-golf facility at the mall sometime this year, and possibly open the carousel, but nothing is finalized yet.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The father of the 4-year-old boy who drowned at a St. Charles country club last year has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the organization, according to a complaint filed with the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

Paulino F. DelleGrazie of St. Charles Township was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at the Royal Fox Country Club on the afternoon of June 14, officials have said.

He was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he was pronounced dead.

“The Royal Fox Country Club had a duty to keep the

members, guests and visitors, including Paulino DelleGrazie, safe while in or around its outdoor pool,” the complaint states.

The document – filed Dec. 23

by Paul DelleGrazie, the boy’s father – asserts the club, at 4405 Royal and Ancient Drive, was negligent in more than a dozen respects.

The club lacked an automated external defibrillator and an emergency action plan, the complaint asserts.

Additionally, the complaint alleges, the club failed to have a properly prepared and supervised lifeguard team; it failed to assign a lifeguard to the unoccupied lifeguard chair in the deep end of the pool; it failed

to perform audits of employed lifeguards; and, among other assertions, it failed to have a pool manager on duty June 14.

The boy was survived by his parents, Paul and Gianna DelleGrazie, and two sisters, who are minors, according to the complaint.

“As a proximate result of the death of Paulino DelleGrazie, his parents and siblings have been deprived of his society, including love, companionship, affection and emotional support and have experienced grief and sorrow, and have therefore suffered injuries of a personal and pecuniary nature,” the complaint states.

A case management conference is set for March 19.

Longtime secretary at Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office dies

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For most of her nearly 46 years as a felony secretary at the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Suzanne Byrum was the go-to person for the paperwork for bond call, new felony and misdemeanor cases and all warrants.

The Geneva resident was hired in 1969 by then-State’s Attorney William Ketcham, eventually working under 10 state’s attorneys, according to a statement from the office on its Facebook page. In recent years, she was an administrative assistant in the child support unit.

In April 2014, the office celebrated her 45th year with a cake.

Byrum, 77, died Monday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. She had come to work as usual the previous Friday, officials said.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said when he told the staff of Byrum’s death, “there were a lot of tears.

“She was a great friend,” McMahon said. “People loved her in the office. She was a sweet lady.”

McMahon said Byrum was known for her quick wit.

Last year Suzanne Byrum celebrated 45 years of working at the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. She started working at the office in 1969, when the state’s attorney and all assistants were part time. She eventually worked under 10 state’s attorneys. Byrum, 77, died Monday.

“There was a long-running joke between her and some of the elected state’s attorneys that if she didn’t do something, she would be fired,” McMahon said. “And then she would come to work the next day and say, ‘I’m still here. I still have a job.’ ” Not having Byrum at her desk has saddened the office, McMahon said.

“Her sweater is still on the back of her chair, and pictures of her grandchildren are on her

desk – tokens and mementos in her cube that made it personal to her.” McMahon said. “Walking by her cube and not seeing her there is emotional.”

Byrum is survived by three children and two grandchildren.

The visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St., Geneva. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles.

OBITUARIES Born: Nov. 1, 1948 Died: Jan. 7, 2015 Richard “Rick” F. Cutlip, age 66, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2015.

He was born on November 1, 1948, to the union of Agnes and Blair Cutlip. He was united in marriage to Diane Roesler, October 22, 1965, in Aurora.

Rick worked for many years at Aurora Pump, as an industrial engineer.

He was also a member of District Council 30 Painters Union. The time spent in the painters union allowed him to practice his craft as a painter.

He took this knowledge and opened his own painting business called Cutlip’s Painting and Decorating. In 1984, Rick’s son Todd joined in the painting business, and together have enjoyed many years of business.

Rick was also a part of many groups and fraternal organizations in the area. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the Turners Organization, and was also a member of Annunciation Church. Everybody loved Rick, and he always had a quick smile for everyone.

Rick is survived by his devoted wife Diane; three loving children, Todd, Kimberly (Bob) Cheline, and Jennifer (Vince) Solano; his grandchildren, Wyatt, Corinne, Kelton, Ellie, Dylan, Abigail, Vincie, Kate, and Luke; his two brothers, Tom Cutlip of Louisiana, Paul (Clara) Cutlip of Ohio; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his in-laws, Marge

and Floyd Roesler.

Howard Parker Price, of Lake in the Hills, died January 6, 2015, at Journey Care in Woodstock, IL, after a brief battle with leukemia. He was born June 19, 1936, in Lebanon, Tennessee, to Clyde N. and Irene Price. He graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1959, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

Howard spent his career in telecommunications beginning with the REA in Washington D.C., where he worked on standards for telephone circuits.

He was also an engineer supervisor for Anaconda Wire and Cable Company and then for most of his career a General Manager for C ntel Telephone. At C ntel, he focused on regional switching centers, network design, lightening protection and fiber optic deployment. School District 303 announces kindergarten registration times ST. CHARLES – Kindergarten registration for the next academic year is set for Feb. 4 in St. Charles School District 303, the district announced in a news release this week.

Registration times are as follows: • 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Bell-Graham, Corron, Ferson Creek, Lincoln, Munhall, Norton Creek, Wasco and Wild Rose elementary schools.

Born: Feb. 3, 1969; in Hennepin County, MN Died: Jan. 6, 2015; in Winfield, IL John G. Strauss, age 45, of West Chicago, died suddenly on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Central DuPage Hospital.

He was born on February 3, 1969, in Hennepin County Minnesota. After moving to Illinois, John grew up in the Hoffman Estates area. He graduated from Northern Illinois University, where he met his bride-to-be, Mary Keating of Joliet.

They were married on February 15, 1997, and lived in West Chicago, IL. He and his wife had three lovely children; all inherited his love for sports.

John was a kind and passionate man, especially when it came to his family and their sporting adventures.

Not only did John love to play sports, he enjoyed coaching his children’s soccer, basketball and softball teams.

When he wasn’t coaching, he could always be found on the sidelines.

He held the position of Director of Sales and worked for Sound Incorporated in Naperville for the past ten years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Keating); and his three children, Allison, Anna, and John Anthony; his mother, Gene Marie Abel (Chuck Abel) of McHenry, IL; his father, John S. Strauss (Deirdre Schanen) of Campton Hills; and his brother, Ryan (Patti) Strauss of Campton Hills and their children, Domenick and Georgia. He was the dearest son-in-law of Tony and Harriet Keating; and brother-inlaw of Patrick and Cindy Keating.

In addition to his family, John had many friends. Once you were a friend of John’s, you were always a friend.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 12, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva. Funeral Mass

will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., at St. John Neumann Church, St. Charles, 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles.

GENEVA – The Geneva Library Foundation Speaker Series will feature “Waltzing Australia,” presented by Cynthia Clampitt.

The event will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 21, in the meeting room at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St., Geneva. Clampitt is a writer, geographer, food historian, and photographer and is the author of the “Waltzing Australia,” which recounts her six-month, 20,000-mile journey that marked her departure from the corporate world in pursuit of a writing career.

Copies of her book will be available to buy at the event with a portion of the proceeds going to the Geneva Library Foundation.

Also, the library will be hosting a book discussion of Bill Bryson’s “In a Sunburned Country” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11, in the second-floor conference room, which will include a compare and contrast of Clampitt’s and Bryson’s experiences.

A limited number of copies of the book will be available to checkout at the Jan. 21 event to valid library cardholders.

The final word THE WASHINGTON POST Several publishers in Western countries have disgraced themselves in recent years with self-censorship to avoid being targeted by Islamic militants. The French newspaper Charlie Hebdo did the opposite: Even after its offices were firebombed in 2011, and even after its editor was put on an al-Qaida wanted list, it continued to courageously publish cartoons and articles lampooning Islam – as well as Christianity, Judaism and established religion in general.

Consequently, the heinous attack it suffered Wednesday – when gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar” invaded its Paris offices and slaughtered 12 people, including editor Stéphane Charbonnier and the police officers defending him – is a direct challenge to the West’s commitment to free expression.

The reaction must be not only one of protest and determination to apprehend the perpetrators. Media in democratic nations also must consciously commit themselves to rejecting intimidation by Islamic extremists or any other movement that seeks to stifle free speech through violence.

That was the course Hebdo followed in 2006, after the publication of anti-Muslim cartoons by a Danish newspaper led to death threats against that paper’s editors and violent protests outside Danish embassies in Muslim countries. The French newspaper reacted by republishing the cartoons.

Several years later, a Hebdo cover announced the prophet Muhammad as a guest editor; that preceded the bombing of its offices. But Charbonnier and his fellow journalists remained undeterred: A tweeted cartoon sent out shortly before the attack facetiously offered greetings from Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. We have objected in the past to expressions that appear intended to gratuitously provoke or offend Muslims, particularly in European nations, such as France, where a large Muslim population suffers from chronic discrimination and is the target of demagoguery by populist political parties. But such criticism does not justify censorship, much less violence. More important, its persistence in the face of threats has amounted to a defense of free expression on behalf of all media – including those, like Yale University Press, that have practiced self-censorship rather than publish anti-Muslim cartoons.

In the aftermath of its worst terrorist attack in decades, France will need to reexamine its policies for protecting journalists and other vulnerable targets on its territory; the measures taken to guard Charbonnier proved inadequate.

The threat the country faces from Islamic extremists is likely to get worse: Hundreds of its citizens have traveled to Syria to fight for the Islamic State. President Francois Hollande, who said other terrorist attacks inside France had recently been foiled, appropriately raised the country’s alert status to its highest level.

Equally important is that media across the west refuse to be cowed by violence. The attack in Paris comes after a year in which two U.S. journalists who traveled to Syria were beheaded by the Islamic State and theaters across the country refused to screen a movie lampooning North Korea because of the threat of violence. Such acts cannot be allowed to inspire more self-censorship – or restrict robust coverage and criticism of Islamic extremism.

To the Editor: As we head into 2015, some major changes are on the way for our state government in Springfield. The video gaming industry is ready to work with our new leaders to support our local neighborhoods and rebuild our economy.

The Illinois Gaming Machine Operators Association, on behalf of the video gaming industry, wants to welcome Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner, the new legislators taking office in January – including Reps. Steven Andersson and Mark Batinick – and the returning members as they come to serve at an important time for our state.

Video gaming is doing its part to help get Illinois on a better track.

There are now more than 18,600 video gaming machines operating in nearly 4,600 locations around the state. Those machines have produced nearly $160 million in

state and local tax revenue in 2014 through October.

Those dollars are supporting thousands of local jobs, helping local governments shore up their budgets and afford infrastructure projects, and providing critical money for the state’s capital construction program – repairing and building roads, bridges and transit systems and putting people to work. This is local entertainment that draws people to bars, restaurants and fraternal organizations and provides hope to so many business owners hurt in recent years by the economic downturn. Video gaming is strictly regulated by the Illinois Gaming Board, and our industry – made up of a collection of

For anyone who wasn’t there Wednesday, the Oshie wannabe clearly was the oldest nonparent making the rounds, but not the lone Blues backer. I was taking a break on one of the player benches on the far side of the rink when I saw a youngster in a Blues sweater skate onto the ice.

In one blink, it was inspiration to get off the pine. I returned to the ice resolved to go 10 minutes without stopping, a feat that met an immediate obstacle.

Other playlist selections resonated for different reasons.

Knights eager to make long-awaited home debut

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com About seven weeks and 13 games into its season, the Kaneland boys basketball team has yet to taste home cooking.

The Knights will make their belated home debut tonight against DeKalb – weather-permitting – but today’s home opener comes much later than coach Brian Johnson would prefer.

“I definitely want to make sure it doesn’t happen again because I think it takes away from our boys, all the hard work they’ve done, not to be rewarded with a home game, playing in front of their crowd, and not too conducive to school spirit when the fans don’t have a chance to see you play until January,” he said.

Johnson said this is the deepest he’s gone into a season without playing a home game during his coaching career – as head coach at Kaneland or an assistant elsewhere.

While holiday tournaments dominate the early stages each season, Johnson said at least one or two home games are typically wedged in, but various circumstances prevented that from being the case this season.

Enthused as the Knights are to finally play in Maple Park, what kind of performance the home fans will be treated to is in question. Not only is DeKalb a formidable opponent, but Kaneland was unable to practice Wednesday or Thursday because of the school’s weather-dictated closure.

Johnson noted some area

schools received permission to conduct voluntary practices, but with Kaneland’s more rural roads in a spread-out district, that wasn’t an option.

“It obviously puts us at a disadvantage going into the game against a very good DeKalb team, maybe the best team in our league,” Johnson said. “Not having a chance to practice puts us behind the 8-ball.”

Kaneland fell to 5-8 on the season with Saturday’s 70-43 loss to St. Charles North at the United Center, but the Knights were playing their best ball of the season before that, going 4-1 at the Plano Christmas Classic.

Johnson knew this year’s new-look squad would take time to develop a winning identity but he’s seen encour-

aging signs, including the emergence of junior forward Ryan David.

“He can be a pretty dynamic player if he continues to work hard, so that’s a huge piece for us,” Johnson said.

“Dylan Vaca has had some really big games for us, it’s just being consistent and doing it night in and night out. I really like how Mitchell Groen has played. He’s kind of a solid energy guy off the bench for us; we can play him at the 4 or 5 and he does really well defensively and doesn’t make mistakes offensively. And I think someone like Connor Fedderly has really stepped up with his leadership. … It’s hard to take him off the floor because he knows exactly what I want done and where [he needs to be] all the time.”

Johnson tried Fedderly at

point guard for a few games but figures the senior lefty is best suited as an off-guard.

The critical point guard spot is a tag-team operation, with juniors Mark Lilly and Tanner Robertsen splitting time.

“If one is having a good game, they kind of dominate the point guard position, and if someone is having an off game, the other guy steps up,” Johnson said. “It’s just kind of a game-by-game thing with them. They’re young, and playing the point guard position is like the quarterback, probably the most important position on the court, so it’ll take some time, but they both have had some really nice games and both have had some struggles here and there.”

Beginning tonight, the Knights’ fans can see for themselves.

There’s only one thing better than scratching a seven-year ice skating itch: Doing so while wearing a T.J. Oshie sweater in Blackhawks country.

As if a bearded, burly man landing triple lutzes weren’t contrarian enough, I graced Wednesday morning’s impromptu public skate at Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena clad in the colors of my hometown St. Louis Blues.

Thank goodness I emerged without matching bruises, too.

To be fair, I didn’t spend the entirety of the two-hour session on the ice, although the last 45 minutes were close to a marathon. Easing back into a childhood pastime that had escaped me since a trip with friends while working in downstate Lincoln, my shin and ankle tolerance gradually increased.

A morning tweet from arena officials announcing the skate in tandem with the cold weather school closings had beckoned me to lace ’em up again.

Former NFL general manager Phil Savage referred to Pace as “underrated and understated” on his Twitter feed Thursday, saying that Pace “deserves his shot.”

Bears Pro Bowl offensive lineman Kyle Long also took to Twitter to express his excitement over Pace’s hiring.

“Just heard the news. Awesome,” Long tweeted Thursday. “Can’t wait to get to work.”

One agent who has worked with Pace called the move an “incredible hire” and added that Pace has “good people skills” and is an “incredible evaluator.” Another referred to Pace as a “great guy, very knowledgable.”

The Bears will introduce Pace, the sixth general manager in franchise history, at a news conference at 11 a.m. today at Halas Hall.

Pace was one of four candidates who interviewed for the role, along with Chris Ballard, Lake Dawson and Brian Gaine.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pace was in on the team’s interview with head coach candidate Todd Bowles.

Pace the right choice for Bears general manager position George McCaskey stopped the presses Thursday with the hiring of Ryan Pace as the Bears general manager.

Bears fans can celebrate.

McCaskey got it right, even with the wrong choice right in front of him in Chris Ballard, a choice most fans would have accepted without realizing the problem.

Pace and Ballard are

similar candidates with near identical qualifications.

They are both bright young executives with deep roots in personnel, excellent people skills and the political savvy to navigate the treacherous waters of NFL back rooms.

The key difference is Pace comes with absolutely no connection to the Bears while almost all of Ballard’s

Jennings admits to speeding, insists he didn’t drink morning of his arrest

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com Bears cornerback Tim Jennings admitted to police he was running behind when he was pulled over for speeding in Georgia Wednesday morning, but insisted he had not been drinking that morning, according to the police report from his arrest.

Jennings was arrested at 11:54 a.m. EST. Wednesday morning and charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. The arresting officer, who clocked Jennings driving 99 mph in a 65 mph zone, wrote in his report he smelled an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and said that Jennings had “slightly bloodshot, watery

eyes.”

Jennings told the officer that he admitted to speeding, indicating he was running behind to a parent-teacher conference for his 2-year-old child.

He asked for a ticket, telling the officer that he understands that police have quotas Tim to meet. But when Jennings the officer asked Jennings if he had been drinking before getting into his 2015 Mercedes, Jennings responded, “What kind of question is that?” and “Why are you asking me that?”

Jennings told the arresting officer that he had been drinking Tuesday night and had stopped around 2 a.m. – roughly 10 hours before being pulled over along Interstate 85 after he was witnessed weaving in and out of traffic. The officer then told Jennings he could smell alcohol on his breath and asked Jennings whether he had brushed his teeth or used mouthwash when he had gotten up.

Jennings inquired why he was being asked that and the officer told him he could smell alcohol.

Jennings then declined to participate in a field sobriety test, telling police he was OK to drive. The officer said Jennings failed to follow directions while he checked Jennings eyes. report indicates Jennings also refused to take the nine-step walk and one-leg stand field sobriety tests. The officer then told Jennings that based on his driving, his mannerisms, the odor of alcohol, the admission to drinking Tuesday night and how he had done on the eye test, he was being arrested for DUI. The police report indicated that while being transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center, Jennings made comments about why it was necessary to go to jail while commenting about driving a nice car and being a target.

Jennings posted bond of more than $2,700 and was released Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears issued a statement Wednesday, saying they were aware of Jennings arrest.

“It’s a team that wants me,” Lynch said. “They want me to be in their locker room, they want me to play for them. Obviously, there’s a few wrinkles (with the CFL), but at the end of the day, it’s football.”

Although he had been willing to move from quarterback to running back and special teams for a chance to play in the NFL, Lynch’s heart remained at quarterback, at which he starred at NIU. After going undrafted, Lynch impressed Bears coaches with his work ethic. But after being buried on the depth chart – both at running back and special teams and getting only limited chances in the preseason – Lynch was told the Bears wouldn’t be keeping him, either on their 53-man roster or their practice squad.

Lynch returned home, where he remained for the next few weeks, wondering what was next.

nia, which is good because they weren’t rusted from bad winter weather,” he says.

“The more original parts a restored car has, the higher its value.”

Unlike some car restorations that merely seek to improve the car, a classic restoration like the GTO aims for original authenticity.

The hardest part of the restoration so far, has been re-aligning the front end.

“The car had been in an accident, and it took a lot of time to straighten it out.”

When the GTO is finished, will it look like it was sitting in a showroom in 1970?

“No,” says Roppo, “it will look better!” The customer wanted a few additions, such as replacing the vinyl seats with leather. However, we replicated the exact stitching. And the paint job won’t be the original yellow. The owner wants ‘Ruby Red Metallic.’ Today’s paint is glossier than the 1970s, so it will look beautiful.” And be safer, as the fuel line and brakes were replaced and will be tested. The final value of the car will be above $50,000.

Jordan Lynch never really considered the Canadian Football League a destination.

Since the NFL was always his preferred landing spot, the former Northern Illinois star quarterback who signed with the Bears as a free agent running back last spring, playing anywhere else was never really on Lynch’s radar.

That changed in November. Now, just more than a year after his college career ended as a Heisman Trophy finalist and as the owner of almsot every NIU offensive school record, Lynch told Chicago Football on Thursday he will sign with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos in the next few days.

“Right after the Bears let me go, I just wanted to play,” Lynch said in a phone interview. “I know what I’m capable of doing. It was a matter of the right person or the right team finding me.”

As it turns out, that team is located more than 1,600 miles away from Lynch’s Chicago home.

The Eskimos finished the 2014 season with a 12-6 record and in second place in the CFL’s West Division. Edmonton showed huge improvement from 2013, when the Eskimos won just four games.

This season, they advanced to the second round of the CFL playoffs, where they lost to Calgary. Edmonton has an emerging quarterback in Mike Reilly, who led all CFL quarterbacks with 616 rushing yards and eight touchdowns while compiling a quarterback

said. “You don’t switch positions just out of nowhere and not have a plan for someone.

But I guess I didn’t show them enough or whatever and they just went in a different direction.”

After being released by the Bears at the end of the preseason, Lynch continued to work out on a daily basis, waiting for his next opportunity. He threw every day and continued to go through running back drills, prepared if an NFL team called. Lynch worked out with the Detroit Lions in November as a running back, but when that didn’t work out, Lynch said he was contacted by the CFL, opening another possible door.

Lynch said the CFL really didn’t become a viable option for him until he was out of a job with the Bears. Even after the Eskimos inquired about him two months ago, Lynch held out hope that an NFL team would call. When that didn’t happen, the talks with Edmonton intensified over the last few weeks.

The Eskimos run some option, which Lynch believes fits well with his hard-charging style of play – one Lynch hopes translates to success in his second go-round in professional football.

“It feels good,” Lynch said.

“I’m going to have a job soon, and it feels really good just to be back in football. The NFL has always been a dream of mine, but if the CFL is going to give me a shot, I want to go up there and play well, and if the opportunity comes where an NFL team wants to buy out my contract, that will be awesome.”

Geneva High School senior has been selected as one of two students across the country to report on the 57th annual Grammy Awards in February in L.A. Geneva resident Angelie Humbert – the editor-in-chief of her high school’s online student newspaper, The Voyager – has been selected to be on the Grammy in the Schools Media Team during the week leading up to the Grammy Awards ceremony,

airing Feb. 8 on CBS, states a news release.

Humbert attended Grammy Camp, a Grammy Angelie Humbert Foundation Education program that took place this past summer, and – through the program – was selected out of more than 100 students to be a part of the media team, the release states.

Grammy camp is a competitive program that provides training for high school students in vocal and instrumental performance, music journalism, music engineering and production.

Humbert’s responsibilities, as part of the media team, will include attending and covering multiple Grammy week events and capturing video content, possibly performing interviews with guest artists, and working with other media outlets in red carpet press lines.

Sophia Peterson of Elgin (junior division) and Erin Newman of St. Charles (senior division) will compete in the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Official Talent Contest State Competition in Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 17.

To win the top honors at the Kane County Fair in July, Peterson did an opera solo, singing “Ave Maria,” and Newman did a vocal solo, singing “Maybe This Time.”

To compete in Springfield, both contestants must recreate the same performance as their winning Kane County Fair competition performance.

Last year, Daniel Souvigny of Hampshire won first place in the junior competition at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fair talent contest. Souvigny was the first-place winner of the junior division of the 2013 Kane County Fair Talent Contest. He performed a piano solo of “Nagasaki,” according to a news release.

“We have had an outstanding record of winning the competitions in Springfield,” said Larry Rossi, RPM creative music coordinator of the Kane County Fair Talent Contest for the past 32 years, in the release. “Our talent across Kane County is exceptional in all categories of musical and dance performance.”

The state competition in Springfield began its tradition in the 1970s in conjunction with the Illinois State Agricultural Fairs annual convention.

ST. CHARLES – A rowing group for breast cancer survivors has started up in St. Charles and is looking to add more members.

The group rows with RowAmerica in St. Charles, and it meets on Saturday mornings at 7:30 a.m.

The group was started by Tina Koral, an 11-year breast cancer survivor, in coordination with RowAmerica.

“While my treatments [were] years ago, I’m still interested in interacting with other survivors and giving and getting support from them,” Koral said in a news release. “I’m excited to learn a new sport that will help me stay consistently active.”

Regular exercise has been shown to reduce breast cancer recurrence by up to 50 percent, according to the release.

Exercise also helps to combat some of the lasting side effects of cancer, including lymphedema, obesity, depression and poor quality of life, the release states.

“RowAmerica St. Charles is proud to be part of this community and provide an opportunity for everyone to give rowing a try,” said Libby Scarlatos, head coach at RowAmerica St. Charles, in the release. “Our program’s goal is to create a social, supportive and fun environment while getting all the physical and mental benefits associated with rowing,” No experience with rowing is necessary to join the group.

Help your kids to choose healthy school lunches Dear Doctor K: How can I encourage my daughter to eat a healthy lunch at school, whether she buys lunch or brownbags it?

Dear Reader: Children need a healthy lunch to refuel after a long morning of working hard.

The midday meal also provides energy and nutrients for kids to stay healthy and grow as well as possible.

If your daughter is going to buy lunch at school, encourage her to: 1. Eat items from each of the five food groups. If your daughter selects a hamburger, she can accompany it with a salad, an apple and low-fat milk.

2. Choose more fruits and vegetables. Salads aren’t the only way to do this. Your daughter can add lettuce and tomatoes to her sandwich, or ask for extra tomato sauce on her spaghetti.

3. Avoid unnecessary fats and choose lower-fat options.

For example, spread mustard on a sandwich rather than mayonnaise, and choose pretzels over potato chips.

When packing lunches at home, a nutritious lunch would typically include: • One serving of fruit • One serving of vegetable • Two servings of grains (bread, cereals, rice, pasta)

Go easy on the mayonnaise.

• Include a piece of fruit for dessert, washed and ready to eat, or a container of fruit salad.

• Try cubes of reduced-fat cheese or string cheese with whole-grain crackers.

• Yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium.

• Choose healthy snacks.

Pack pretzels, popcorn, rice cakes, whole-grain crackers, dry cereal or trail mix.

• Avoid prepackaged convenience foods, which tend to be high in fats.

• Involve your child in deciding what to make for lunch together.

• Be sure all lunch items are easy to eat. Peeling and slicing fruits and vegetables at home often makes them easier to eat at school.

Teaching your child to make healthy choices starts at home.

Set a good example with your own eating habits.

Your child’s healthy choices also can be influenced by the school lunch program. I’ve had patients complain to me that they got their kids used to eating healthy lunches, but the lunches served at school were full of unhealthy, but popular, foods – pizza, for example. The delight other kids took in these foods made their kids feel they were missing out on the fun. So the kids began to complain.

I advised these parents to get involved in their local PTA. One reason many school lunch programs have improved is the action of PTAs all around the country.

Dr. Wallace: I used to live with my mom and younger brother, but lately we added another family member, Grandpa Nick (Mom’s father). He is a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor. Our grandpa does have one bad habit: He smokes in our rather small house. Mom, my brother and I have all tried to get him to smoke outside because of the dangers of secondhand smoke, but all he does is to say that secondhand smoke is not a health hazard and just a government scare. Please give us the real truth on secondhand smoke. – Nameless, McComb, Mississippi Dear Nameless: It is estimated that 3,000 non-smokers die every year from lung cancer caused by spent (secondhand) tobacco smoke. The Centers for Disease Control lists negatives of breathing secondhand smoke. Make sure Grandpa reads today’s teen column and learns these five secondhand precautions: 1. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes 30 times as many lung cancer deaths as all regulated air pollutants combined.

2. Secondhand smoke leads to coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, reduced lung function and reddening, itching and watering of your eyes.

3. More than 4,000 chemical compounds have been identified in tobacco smoke; at least 43 are known to cause cancer in humans or animals.

4. Exposure to secondhand smoke contributes to up to 300,000 infections annually in children younger than 18 months.

Infections include potentially serious conditions such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Between 7,500 and 15,000 children are hospitalized due to these infections.

I became an educator because I wanted to teach and coach basketball. I started my career in education teaching English and coaching varsity basketball at Hiawatha High in Kirkland, Illinois, moved on to Phoenix and did the same at Phoenix Union High – English and varsity basketball coach – and finally at LaQuinta High – teaching English and coaching the varsity basketball team in Westminster, California.

I enjoyed participating in sports and coaching athletics, so that’s why I promote high school athletics. But as a high school administrator I never forgot that the prime responsibility of education is to provide the best possible academic learning environment for every student.

In bridge, though, you do have to worry about second things, especially second suits. In this deal, for example, how should South play in four hearts after West leads the spade king and continues the suit when his partner encourages with the ten?

In the auction, South’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing, which artificially announced at least game-invitational strength.

Without three hearts, North rebid two diamonds. South mentioned his second suit, which instigated a game force. And when North bid three hearts to show high-honor-doubleton, South decided to play in four hearts. (If he had continued with four clubs, North would have raised to five clubs, a contract that would have made easily with the trumps 3-2.)

Four hearts needed careful handling. After ruffing the second spade, if South had drawn trumps, he would have turned it into a notrump contract and gone several down.

When declarer has a two-suiter and needs to gain tricks from the second suit, it is usually correct to play on the side suit first. So South led a club to dummy’s king, returned a club to his ace, and played a third club to West’s queen. East discarded a diamond.

When West led his spade queen, South ruffed and played off dummy’s top diamonds. East ruffed the second, but had no riposte.

If he had returned a heart, declarer would have drawn trumps and cashed his club winners.

When East played another spade, South crossruffed home.
