An update on joining the DAR EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey In April, I wrote a column about how I was on a quest to join the Daughters of the American Revolution organization.

I am still looking to join the nonprofit women’s group, which is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children.

My grandmother had been a member of the DAR when she was alive, and I also hope to become a member and have taken some preliminary steps toward becoming one.

Earlier this week, I was reminded of my DAR endeavor when I received a call from St. Charles resident Jean Evans Joyce.

I had written in my April column that Jean wanted to become a member of the DAR in memory of her great-great grandmother, Emma Zeigler Evans. Jean told me that her great-great grandmother tried to join the DAR in 1900 but wasn’t successful.

“I’m doing this in her honor and to make it successful and make it complete,” Jean had said. “I want to thank her. That’s why I’m doing it.”

Well, Jean on Tuesday became a member of the Elias Kent Kane Chapter of the DAR. “It feels like I crossed the finish line,” Jean told me Thursday afternoon.

Joan Longmire of the Elias Kent Kane Chapter also was a huge help, Jean said, and – moving forward – Jayne Cates, another member of the chapter, will serve as a mentor to her.

It was great to get the call

from Jean and to hear how she finally completed her mission of joining the DAR in honor of her great-great grandmother.

“I did it for her, but now I need to do it,” Jean said. “I gotta step up.”

Mussels, buttons and the Fox River GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Editor’s note: This is a rerun of a column that first appeared in January 2011: Well, I popped a button.

This should come as no surprise, given the way food in general, and fudge in particular, has been in abundance these past few weeks. But as I looked at the broken disk, and searched for a suitable replacement, it got me thinking about buttons. Not so much the cheap plastic kind we have today, but rather the so-called “pearl” buttons that were common long ago. And they, of course, got me to thinking about the freshwater mussels in our own Fox River.

If this were 100 years ago and one of us popped a button, the replacement we’d reach for wouldn’t have been made of plastic. It likely would’ve been made of mother-of-pearl or, less fancifully, the shell of a freshwater mussel.

Back then, mussels were harvested by the bucket load, and boatload. Entrepreneurs called clammers, and sometimes industrious kids (you could earn about a penny a pound), collected the bottom-dwelling, filter-feeding creatures by hand – and by hook.

Those in it for the “big money” would attach fourpronged “crowfoot” hooks to a bar, then drag them along a river bottom. Mussels embedded in sediment, shells partially opened for feeding, would instinctively clamp shut when the hooks touched their sensitive edges.

Back on the riverbank, the mussels were removed from the hooks and sorted.

Those deemed suitable for button-making were steamed open. The “meat” (an often

gritty mass sometimes used as pig feed) was removed, and the cleaned-out shells were then shipped to a button factory for processing.

In our area, the largest such facility probably was the Rehbehn Brothers Button Factory in Yorkville. It was on the south side of the Fox River near what is now the Route 47 bridge.

If you happen to find yourself by the river in Yorkville, downstream of the bridge, take a look along the shore and in the water.

Even today, 100 years after the pearl button industry boom, it’s still possible to find freshwater mussel shells with uniform circles punched out.

I’ve got a few of these punched-out shells, which we use at the park district in our aquatic ecology and Fox River programs. But, even when not teaching, I’m apt to have a shell or two handy, just because I think they’re really cool. For me the shells, for one, symbolize the struggle of the button cutters – who, on a good day, might be able to cut 100 pounds of shells and produce 3,600 button blanks. It was messy work, and kind of dangerous too. They were paid by the piece, and were penalized for excessive waste – that is, not getting enough blanks from a shell. Six-day work weeks consisting of 10-hour days might fetch a week’s paycheck of $20. Granted, these weren’t horrible wages for the times, but they were definitely hard earned.

Our button shells to me also represent the struggle of the mussels themselves.

As if it wasn’t enough that their lot in life is to be bottom-dwelling filter feeders, these critters also bore the added burden of over harvesting. Only the very smallest bivalves escaped capture; the rest were turned into buttons.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, freshwater mussels were used to make buttons. Harvests took place throughout the Midwest, including Illinois and our own Fox River. Annual harvests totaled tens of millions of pounds per year. By 1908 many mussel numbers were severely depleted, and many species were near extinction. that the Fox River clamming industry went bust just a few short years after it boomed.

Although the thinking at the time was that the river was simply becoming too polluted (another sad but true circumstance), the fact remains that too many mussels were taken. Only recently have their populations grown, although estimates are that they will never attain the numbers they once had.

So, did I ever get a new button sewn on?

Well, no, not yet. But I did find some more button shells in a bowl on my dresser.

A few ancient blanks too.

Oh, and some turtlenecks I forgot I bought last winter.

They’re warm and soft and, best of all, button free.

COMPLEX PROBLEM New teacher evaluation law poses issue to districts

By the start of the 2016-17 academic year, they – along with other districts in Illinois – must begin using new teacher evaluation systems that incorporate student growth measures to comply with the Performance Evaluation Reform Act. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill, which implements rigorous evaluations for teachers and school principals, into law in January 2010. A news release about the event indicated the new law boosted Illinois’ Race to the Top application by addressing one of four priority areas outlined by the U.S. Department of Education.

Administrators with the Batavia, Kaneland and St. Charles districts said their school systems already have begun preparations for the new law by forming advisory groups and launching pilot programs.

Steve Pearce, the assistant superintendent for human resources for Batavia Public School District 101, said what the law is asking schools to do is good from an assessment perspective.

“It can clue us in to students and if they’re growing or not, which can then allow teachers to adjust their instruction,” Pearce said.

But, he and others said, it’s complex.

“In concept, this makes a lot of sense, but the details are very complicated,” St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

The difficulty is twofold, Schlomann said: finding an appropriate assessment and defining student growth.

There are three types of assessments – those that are teacher-given; those that are given districtwide; and “nationally normed” assessments, such as the ACT, Schlomann said.

According to the new law, he said, a teacher’s evaluation must include a teacher-given assessment and, if available, at least one of the other two.

“The difficulty here is are they valid assessments?”

Schlomann asked. “Can you really measure student growth off of that assessment?”

And because the law applies to a variety of educators – such as librarians – some areas might be hard to measure, Schlomann said.

To determine which assessments it has and which categories they fall into, Kaneland School District 302 is undergoing an assessment audit, said Sarah Mumm, director of educational services K-5.

She said the district hopes to complete the audit by summer so further work can then be done on assessments.

A pilot program is expected to begin in the fall with feedback available by this time next year, Mumm said. She said staff would be trained next spring.

“It’s time consuming, that’s for sure,” she said but noted the district has done other work leading up to this. “It’d be overwhelming if we were starting from scratch.”

Batavia, meanwhile, has already started the piloting process at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, Pearce said.

“They’re going to test out the entire process,” he said of the four participating teacher teams.

The district’s task force studying the issue can then learn from that process, and a full pilot will be launched next year, Pearce said.

Because some low-performing districts must implement the new evaluation systems for the 2015-16 academic year, administrators here said there are opportunities to learn from them.

And if something doesn’t work, Pearce said, districts will be able to make adjustments.

“There is a lot of opportunity to tweak goals and outcomes as the process moves along,” he said.

Brett Youngsteadt Kane County Animal Control administrator was ranked three-fourths out of a possible five, so it was not starved, Youngsteadt said.

Youngsteadt said the body conditions of the remaining 10 horses Phelps owns also were examined, and they all were found to be in good condition.

Phelps told officials when he came home from work Jan. 7, he saw that Mazie was dead, Youngsteadt said.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures Wednesday were measured below zero for the region with wind gusts up to 28 mph.

Phelps was cited for lack of sufficient shelter and for the horses’ water being frozen, Youngsteadt said.

The two citations carry fines of $500 each. Phelps is scheduled to appear in Kane County Branch Court on Jan. 28.

“He had 11 horses for two lean-tos and that was not enough,” Youngsteadt said.

“Because of the extremeness of the weather, he should have brought them inside or provided another lean-to.”

Phelps did not return a message left through animal control officials seeking comment.

“If you drive around in Kane County, you see tons of horses out,” Youngsteadt said.

“The key is that they are provided shelter, food and adequate water.”

Because the county did not seek a necropsy to find the exact cause of death for Mazie, Youngsteadt said Phelps called a rendering service to pick up the body.

MAPLE PARK – No cause was determined in the death of a horse found frozen at a farm Wednesday in Virgil Township near Maple Park, Kane County Animal Control Administrator Brett Youngsteadt said.

“We do not have an exact cause of death,” Youngsteadt said. “The veterinarian on site said a necropsy would not yield results. We can say that we do know the horse was old and that the horse was not starved.

We don’t know if the horse froze to death.”

Youngsteadt said officials determined that the horse’s owner, Paul Phelps, of the 50W100 block of Peterson Road, Virgil Township, did not intend for the horse to die. Through an examination of the horse’s condition score, the vet also determined cruelty was not involved in the death, he said.

Officials released Phelps’ name and other information after a Freedom of Information Act request by the Kane County Chronicle.

“They are a good sales tax producer,” North Aurora Finance Director Bill Hannah said on Friday. The store opened in August 2007 at 1600 Orchard Gateway Boulevard in the North Aurora Towne Center off Randall Road.

On Thursday, the chain an-

nounced it will close about 40 stores nationwide on or about April 4. The store closings represent less than 4 percent of the chain’s total store base, J.C. Penney spokesman Carter English wrote in an email.

“We continually evaluate our store portfolio to determine whether there’s a need to close or relocate under performing stores,” English wrote. “Reviews such as these are essential in meeting our long-term goals for future company growth. While it’s never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued asso-

ciates and customers, we feel this is a necessary business decision.”

Two J.C. Penney stores in Illinois are set to close, one in DeKalb and the other in Quincy. North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said the North Aurora Towne Center should see more traffic as a result of a new hotel – which is planned to be built near the shopping center – as well as a 429,000-square-foot industrial building recently built near the center.

Former Holy Cross pastor pleads guilty to disorderly conduct Brodeski sentenced to court supervision, community service

By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com Former Holy Cross Catholic Church Pastor Aaron Brodeski pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct Friday after facing initial charges of public indecency.

Brodeski, who started at Holy Cross in Batavia on Feb. 25, 2013, has been on leave from the church.

He was sentenced to two years of court supervision, a $500 fine and 30 hours of community Aaron Brodeski service for a March 2014 incident.

He has been a priest in the Rockford Diocese since 1998.

“Msgr. Brodeski cooperated fully with law enforcement and has been on administrative leave from any and all priestly assignments and participated in evaluation for any difficulties affecting his conduct and ministry,” read a statement from the Diocese of Rockford. “[He] will remain unassigned from all priestly duties at this time and will work with diocesan officials to determine the next course for him.”

On March 27, 2014, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police were sent to the Road Ranger Gas Station at 4980 South Main St., just south of Rockford, for a report of a

man who had exposed himself to an employee, according to a release from the Winnebago

County Sheriff’s Police.

tions, and it is important for others to see such actions will not go unpunished.”

“Although their actions were thoughtless and egregious, these women had no intention of causing harm to anyone,” McMahon said.

Allowing them to plead to lesser charges gives them a chance at redemption, McMahon said, so they can advance their education and employment opportunities.

“We consulted with the victim’s family before we made this plea offer, and they were in agreement,” McMahon said.

“They owe a debt to society, but it is not too great a debt.”

Barnett’s attorney, Richard Irvin, said the case was a sad situation.

“She accepted responsibility for what she did,” Irvin said.

“She wrote an apology letter to the victim and her family. She has learned from this.”

Santos’s attorney, Scott Kent, said all parties thought the plea agreement was the best way to handle the situation.

“My client has never been in trouble before and made an absolutely terrible decision that day,” Kent said. “She wrote a letter to the victim’s family indicating her remorse.”

Kent agreed with McMahon that the two should not have felony charges on their records.

“It would be a shame that such an awful decision by these young ladies would result in them being felons the rest of their lives, in light of no physical harm to the woman in this case,” Kent said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Two nurse’s aides pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor battery of an elderly woman at a long-term care facility in a plea deal.

Chemyra Barnett, 19, of Elgin, and Jacqueline Santos, 19, of South Elgin, had been charged March 11, 2014, with felony abuse of a woman at a long-term care facility and dissemination of an unauthorized video recording.

Snow and frigid temperatures led to an icy commute for drivers Friday morning in Kane County.

“The majority of the accidents were on county roads and were due to ice/ slick roads,” she wrote.

Between 6 and 10:30 a.m., Nash wrote, a property-damage accident occurred at Randall Road and Williamsburg Avenue, and personal-injury accidents occurred at Randall Road and Fargo Boulevard and at Kirk Road and Averill Road.

“The accident at Randall Road at Fargo did require southbound Randall Road to be closed between Kaneville [Road] and Fargo for approximately one hour,” Nash wrote.

“We have been very fortunate that we haven’t had any crashes today.”

In Sugar Grove, volunteers with the Kane County Office of Emergency Management helped with a traffic incident, Director Don Bryant said.

Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email that traffic problems were widespread.

“I think the ice under the snow was the real issue,” he wrote.

Other police agencies, however, described a relatively quiet morning.

“We have been very fortunate that we haven’t had any crashes today,” Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said mid-morning Friday.

Snow plows had been out since about 4 a.m., he said, and motorists seemed to be driving carefully.

“Here in town we haven’t had any issues,” Smith said.

In Campton Hills, police responded to two accidents at 5:50 and 8:53 p.m. Thurs-

day and encountered no problems Friday morning, Chief Dan Hoffman said.

Of the accidents, he said they were “nothing serious and fewer than I thought because the roads were bad [Thursday]. … We’re very lucky so far.”

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory from 6 p.m. Friday to noon today for several counties, including Kane.

Wind chill values were expected to be 20 below to 30 below zero, and some isolated locations had the possibility of experiencing values as low as 35 below zero overnight, according to the advisory.

Those venturing outdoors are advised to wear a hat and gloves, as frost bite can occur in a matter of minutes, and extended exposure without proper clothing increases the risk of hypothermia.

Elgin Community College President David Sam said Friday he can see the benefits of America’s College Promise, President Barack Obama’s proposal to make two years of college as free and universal as high school.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Sam said, noting it would benefit families struggling with expenses. “The challenge is being able to get the financial resources to make it happen.”

Under Obama’s proposal, a full-time community college student could save an average of $3,800 in tuition a year, and an estimated 9 million students could benefit if all states participate, according to a release from the press secretary’s office for the president.

“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said in a video on the White House Blog. “It’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”

Jim Sibley, a spokesperson for Waubonsee Community College, said it is difficult to respond to the proposal without having all of the details.

But, he said, “We believe community colleges offer high-quality education, and a proposal that may increase availability and opportunity to education would be welcomed.”

Karen Hunter Anderson, executive director of the Illinois Community College Board, said in a statement that she applauds the proposal for recognizing the important role community colleges play. The proposal aligns with the direction of many community college districts in Illinois, she said.

“Some community college districts, including Chicago, have or will implement ‘promise’ programs designed to cover the tuition costs of a community college education for eligible students in their districts,” she said. “To fully implement a tuition-free program for the approximately 340,000 Illinois community college students in credit programs would require a significant investment in state funds.”

Sheriff Kramer up for challenge in first year There’s a new sheriff in town, and the early stages of Donald Kramer’s tenure in Kane County is beginning to come into focus.

On Monday, Kramer held a news conference to discuss plans for his first year in office. We were encouraged by early indications that Lt. Kevin Williams and Lt. Willie Mayes – both of whom ran against Kramer for sheriff, with Mayes providing the opposition in the general

election – seem likely to remain valued members of the department going forward.

Kramer has the luxury of taking over a department that – by most accounts – functioned well under his predecessor, Pat Perez. But like any new office-holder, Kramer is entitled to put his own stamp on the department, and he seems determined to do so.

He announced plans to hire a finance director – a

move we did not hear much about during the campaign – but we can give him the benefit of the doubt, especially considering plans to reduce costs with the elimination of a grant writer and administrative assistant.

Kramer, who brings more than 30 years experience in various law enforcement roles to the position, also is following through with his previously expressed intentions to have lieutenants on

duty around the clock, and he intends to focus on union negotiations at the correctional center.

We also are glad to see Pat Gengler continue as the department’s public information officer, a role at which he excels.

Beyond that, we would like to see Kramer act on campaign pledges to focus on mentorship within the department, pursue more efficient energy sources for fleet

vehicles and foster greater outreach to the public to proactively pinpoint solutions to public safety concerns.

The recent revelation that the county’s revenue-generating partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service could be in peril because of staffing strains also becomes a front-burner concern.

That is a lot on Kramer’s plate for Year 1, but we believe he is up to the challenge.

How we’ll remember Gov. Pat Quinn Only days remain in Gov. Pat Quinn’s tenure as Illinois’ top elected official.

His legacy as governor can be summed up in one word: disappointing.

The Pat Quinn who leaves Springfield on Monday when Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn in is not the same Pat Quinn who entered politics in the early 1980s.

The early Pat Quinn was a political reformer. He fought for the public and increasing its power in government. He fought for smaller government.

He became a consumer watchdog. Those traits gave hope that maybe Quinn would do the same as the state’s top leader.

Instead, this Pat Quinn leaves office as a typical Springfield politician, finding jobs for friends and failing to change how things work in state government. At least he’s not heading to jail, which is an accomplishment for an Illinois governor.

Quinn, as lieutenant governor, assumed the governor position in January 2009 after Rod Blagojevich was impeached. Since taking office,

Quinn has been a poor leader. Too often, he stood on the sidelines and watched. When the state needed leadership on pension reform, Quinn failed to provide any.

When the state needed to examine spending and make hard budget decisions, he raised your taxes by 67 percent – during a lame-duck legislative session, by trading state jobs for “yes” votes. His 2010 Neighborhood Recovery Program, which is under federal investigation, was seemingly nothing more than a political slush fund to help shore up city votes ahead of an election that Quinn won by a slim margin.

Quinn has signed some landmark legislation, including laws abolishing the death penalty, legalizing gay marriage and approving medical marijuana. He’s always been a staunch supporter of military veterans.

Ultimately, Quinn’s failed policies, poor leadership and Illinois’ still uncertain future will define the Pat Quinn era.

It’s too bad Illinois got that Pat Quinn as governor, and not Pat Quinn the reformer.

The recycling bin at our apartment building is filled with Christmas boxes. In between these boxes, I spotted a delivery box for pizza that had dough and sauce on the bottom cardboard. I am curious why people do not realize that there should be no food involved with recycling. How about an informative statement on the recycling bin? It could read, please no food.

Please rinse out containers.

Please take tops off bottles. If we as a community are serious about recycling, why don’t we have instructions on the bin?

I also saw a can of beans with half of the beans still inside the can. As a courtesy, why didn’t the person empty and rinse the can?

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Playing in a 20,000-seat, pro stadium its last time out carried nowhere near the pressure for the St. Charles North boys basketball team as Friday’s matchup in Batavia.

A markedly more intimate gymnasium and inspired opponent snapped the North Stars back to reality, but North exhaled happily after overtime with a 63-61 Upstate Eight Conference River escape job at Batavia.

North breezed to victory last time out at the United Center Jan. 3 against Kaneland.

“It wakes us up,” North junior guard Mikey Schroeder said. “We’re not as good as we think we are. When we play in a packed house like this, it’s big for us to get a win. There’s a lot of work for us to be done, though.”

A game that started slowly delivered a thrilling crescendo. The hard-luck loss was one of the toughest defeats Batavia coach Jim Nazos has experienced in his three seasons with the Bulldogs. Batavia led much of the night, including a 12-point advantage in the third quarter.

“It’s a tough loss but I’m not off us because there was still a lot of good,” Nazos said.

“We’ve got to get over the last hurdle, and sometimes that’s the toughest. … We’re there, but we’re not all the way there.”

North missed three shots on an extended, final possession at the end of regulation, but any sinking feeling about going to overtime quickly dissipated when forward Jack Callaghan opened the extra session by banking in a 3-pointer for a 57-54 lead.

The North Stars’ cause was further bolstered in OT by uncontested layups off sharp cuts from Schroeder and Callaghan to help North answer Batavia baskets.

“When our big guys are setting good screens, it’s easier to score,” Schroeder said. “It helps us a lot. We’re a 3-point

North, however, also was guilty of a defensive lapse in overtime, allowing an open 3-point look to Canaan Coffey with 18 seconds left. Coffey’s 3 brought Batavia (9-8, 2-5 UEC River) to within 63-61.

After Schroeder missed the front end of a one-and-one, Batavia had a final chance, but an interior look from forward Chasen Peez bounced off the rim in the closing seconds as North (10-6, 5-1) remained in conference striking position.

A scorching 2-minute stretch from North senior guard Jake Ludwig helped carry the North Stars all the way back from a 12-point deficit during the third quarter. Lud-

wig scored 11 in the quarter, including a trio of three-point plays in close succession.

“I was just taking what the defense was giving me, and my teammates did a good job of setting the screens and clearing out the lane, and it just happened,” Ludwig said.

Ludwig’s surge was all the more impressive considering a turbulent week.

“Jake hasn’t played since Kaneland [on Saturday] because he’s had bronchitis, and it looks as if these two off days [from school] that we had, nobody touched a basketball the way we were shooting in the first half,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “This is what we expected, offensively, that we were going to be rusty, we

might not shoot the ball well, execution was a little bit slow, and Batavia played hard, manto-man defense.”

Batavia led, 26-19, after a first half in which its defense and depth shined. Reserves Tyler Lovestrand and Brett Bowman came on particularly strong during the second quarter, with Bowman picking Ludwig’s pocket and zipping in for an acrobatic finish to give his team a 24-17 lead.

“They woke us up in the first half and played really hard, and we didn’t handle it really well,” Schroeder said.

Lovestrand, who recently returned from an 11-game absence with a broken wrist, scored 14 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, who were led by 18 from Coffey. Coffey’s game-tying 3-pointer with 58 seconds left in the fourth quarter marked the final points of regulation.

Schroeder (19 points), Ludwig (18) and Callaghan (10) paced North offensively while sophomore forward Griffin Hammer notched 11 rebounds and scored all six of his points in the second half. Poulin was especially high on Schroeder’s night.

“You always want people who can put the ball in the hole, but he just played so hard,” Poulin said. “He was really dialed in and focused.

I didn’t think our concentration was there tonight on some of the details that you need to beat Batavia, but Mike was there. He was focused every time out, and he was a leader tonight.”

“We just wanted it really bad,” North junior forward Claire Jakaitis said. “We ran and executed our sets good and made them play at our pace.”

Jakaitis finished with 13 points, figuring prominently in a balanced scoring equation that included Nichole Davidson (16) and Morgan Rosencrants.

Davidson, Rosencrants and Davern – playing for the first time since sustaining a concussion during a Dundee-Crown tournament game last month – each contributed at least six rebounds.

“I was so excited. It’s so hard to always sit out,” Davern said.

“You feel like you’re letting your team down. So I was just happy to be back and do my part to help with whatever I could. Even though I’m not a big scorer, I tried my best to do whatever I can with rebounding or whatever.”

Batavia twice pulled within seven points down the stretch of the third quarter, with Frazier converting a three-point play and swishing a pair of free throws in separate instances.

BATAVIA – Those familiar speed bursts again boosted the St. Charles North girls basketball team through key stretches Friday.

For the most part, however, the North Stars earned a 47-34 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win at Batavia by exhaling.

Especially when they encountered the Bulldogs’ differing – and diligent – defensive looks.

“It was good to show we could play a slower game,” North senior guard Ashling Davern said.

“Although running is one of our strengths, we also know we can play slow. If other teams throw that at us, we know what to do.”

No question, Batavia (9-10, 3-3 UEC River) limited North (11-6, 4-2) in transition throughout the night.

“Yeah,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “I told the girls our defensive effort was what we needed it to be. I mean, I don’t think [North coach Sean Masoncup] wants them to be totally run and gun, but when they get a rebound or a turnover, they want to go and go fast. And we played at a tempo that would give us a chance to win and be successful.

“I thought our defense was on point almost the whole night.”

North took early command by sprinting to a 10-0 run in the first 2:45 of the second quarter.

Batavia made only one field goal in the quarter, and needed more than three minutes for a score of any kind, a Bethany Orman free throw.

Whether the product of an impromptu midweek lull because of cold-weather school cancellations or North’s own defensive intensity, the Bulldogs struggled to get comfortable from the floor and trailed by 10 at the break.

Batavia misfired on its first 14 3-point attempts and shot 28 percent from the field overall.

Junior standout Hannah Frazier, who finished with a gamehigh 18 points, was limited to four before halftime.

The North Stars, however, stressed efficiency and ball movement as Batavia shifted defenses between its 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones and man-to-man ear-

The DeKalb 220-pounder was down seven points in the first wrestling match of the day against the Knights, but in the blink of an eye got a reverse and a pin, setting an early tone for the Barbs in a 41-19 win in a Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division showdown Friday.

“I kept wrestling hard and managed to get the pin,” Johnson said. “I started to wear him down, he made a mistake and I caught him on his back.”

“When you keep wrestling, good things will happen,” Pater said. “That’s what we try to tell these kids – never give up and continue to wrestle. They can push kids to break.”

Kaneland (10-6 overall, 4-2 NI Big 12 East) won the next two matches – a 9-0 win for Zach Thielk at heavyweight and a 7-5 win for Austin Kedzie at 106. Kedzie was up, 7-0, in the third but gave up a takedown and a pair of two-point nearfalls to Christian Komitas to lose the chance at a major decision.

Orozco said he thought the first three matches were the Knights’ best shot at pins against the Barbs (11-4, 4-1), especially at heavyweight.

“We knew going into that, that was a chance to get six points,” Orosco said. “We were going to need it because they’re tough in those lightto mid-weights. So we kind of dropped the ball.”

pins for the Barbs, while Riley Vanik (160) had the Knights’ only pin. Olson’s pin clinched the win for the Barbs, four bouts from the end of the match.

DeKalb’s Ethan Engleson and Kaneland’s Zac Parker had an interesting bout at 182.

Engleson was close to a pin at the end of the first but ran out of time. In the second, Parker started on bottom but got a reverse, leading to four reverses in a row and a 4-4 tie after two.

Engleson started on bottom and the duo swapped reverses again in the third, but Engleson got an escape late for the 7-6 win.

“He found a way to get to his feet, get an escape, and came through with a last-second victory,” Pater said. “That was good to see.”

Vaca rallies Knights to win

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – With the score tied and 5.8 seconds remaining on the clock, the Kaneland boys basketball team chose to go to the its best player of the moment – Dylan Vaca.

Vaca caught the ball at the top of the key, drove on DeKalb’s Jace Kitchen and drew the foul in his shot attempt. The junior forward calmed his nerves and knocked down one of two foul shots to give the Knights the lead for good.

Kaneland beat the Barbs, 5352, Friday night in Kaneland’s first home game this season.

“It was awesome,” said Vaca, who led the Knights with 17 points. “It was awesome with our first home game being so late and getting a win like that pumped up the crowd.

There was a lot of energy and it was a good game. It was fun.”

The Barbs (8-3, 1-1 NI Big 12) came into the Kaneland gymnasium with a better record, but struggled when the pressure began to heat up in the fourth quarter. DeKalb coach

Al Biancalana said the team lost focus.

“It’s a matter of our lack of focus and concentration,” Biancalana said. “At times, we just lose sight of what is important. We had a nice sixpoint lead and then a terrible turnover, and that ignites them.”

That six-point lead came after Luke Davis capped a 7-0 run with a slam-dunk. On the next DeKalb possession, Ryan David stole the ball and finished on the other end to change the momentum into the Knights’ favor.

With Kaneland (6-8, 1-1 NI Big 12) trailing, 50-46, Vaca drove and dumped the ball off to Jacob Gomes, who converted the chance. Next, the Knights tied the game after Mark Lilly knocked down a pair of free throws.

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said everyone was playing well by staying simple.

“To play like that against a really good team, each guy came up with big shots,” Johnson said. “It just seem like everybody that we put in, they stayed within themselves and played their role and that is all

you can ask for.”

The Knights took their first lead of the fourth quarter when Connor Fedderly found Gomes in the post with a nice pass.

Gomes scored on the lay-up to cap a big 8-0 run for Kaneland.

The Barbs responded when Michael Pollack collected an offensive rebound off a Davis miss.

Pollack hit the short jumper to tie the game at 52. On the ensuing possession, Kaneland ran down the clock before calling timeout.

“That last play was drawn up for me,” Vaca said. “You just get that ball and read the defense to see if you have anything, but you just have to play with what the defense gives you at that point.”

After coming out of the timeout, Vaca drove deep in the lane to draw the foul from Kitchen. Johnson said Vaca did well in the late-game situation.

“I thought Dylan [Vaca] did a good job of making contact,” Johnson said. “What was really nice was that Ryan David was right there for the miss to put it back. Dylan making that first free throw was huge.”

St. Charles East senior Dana Brandt is among the leaders for the Saints girls bowling team. The four-year team member – who has a career-high 276 game to her name – spoke with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about her bowling background and more for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat. The following is an edited transcript:

What got you into bowling?

My dad was a bowler. He started in his 20s, so when my parents had me I was always

brought up in a bowling alley and bowling setting, so I just picked it up and picked it up ever since pretty much.

What are the toughest lanes you’ve bowled at around here?

I don’t really find bowling alleys themselves to be difficult. It’s usually just the house pattern they put out for us. I usually find drier lanes pretty tough. I can’t really think of any around here that are hard but at a national tournament we had drier lanes, and that’s what really brings my score down.

Batavia-Geneva drama at its finest Whether they exit stage left or stage right, Batavia wrestlers simply want to walk off with a victory Thursday.

That’s when the Bulldogs will host archrival Geneva in a meet to be contested on the main stage of the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

There’s always drama when Batavia and Geneva square off, but the venue suggests this one could be in a class by itself.

Sound effects, special lighting and “other fan-friendly action” will spruce up the meet, Batavia athletic director Dave Andrews said.

The night will be part of “Wrestling Night” in Batavia, and wrestlers from the Batavia Wrestling Club, Rotolo Middle School and the high school will be recognized. Wrestlers ages 5 to 18 will be part of the mix. The varsity meet will start at 7:30 p.m., with lower-level matches to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. Admission is $5.

Break a leg, fellas, figuratively speaking of course.

Move it back: Reschedule dates for some of the week’s cold-weather postponements were announced Friday.

Most prominently, an Upstate Eight Conference River boys basketball rumble between host Geneva and Larkin – originally scheduled for Friday night – was moved to 6 p.m. today. While Geneva was in session Friday, the U-46 schools were not, necessitating the change. The Geneva-Larkin girls game that was supposed to be the opener of Friday’s doubleheader was

Night of Hoops schedule unveiled: Batavia boys basketball announced the full schedule for the Jim & Sylvia Roberts “Night of Hoops” on Jan. 31, the 22nd year for Night of Hoops in B-Town.

The four-game varsity lineup begins at 3 p.m. with Benet against Bartonville Limestone, to be followed by Mooseheart-York at 4:30, St. Joseph-Highland Park at 6:15 and Batavia-West Aurora at 8.

Sophomore games will take place, two at a time, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Admission for the day is $7.

Right now it’s the 7-pin. It’s just whenever I get that I’m

like, ‘Oh, yay.’ But usually I’m pretty good with spares, but right now the 7-pin is what’s causing me some trouble.

Who has the loudest personality on the team?

It’s usually between Emma (Vitallo) or Abby (McSkimming). They’re usually always pretty upbeat and happy, no matter what’s going on, whether we’re doing bad or doing good, always singing, and during practice, Abby has the music playing. They make jokes and try to keep the team as upbeat as possible and

make everyone laugh.

Do you have any tricks that help you concentrate?

Usually just when I’m up there, I just [take a moment] to get me in my zone. I take a deep breath and just think about what I’m supposed to do and then I just go.

How are you taking advantage of the cold days this week?

I’m actually practicing right now (at Bowling Green Lanes in West Chicago). Whenever I have free time, I’m usually there working on my game.

LAKE FOREST – Not even a minute into Ryan Pace’s introductory news conference Friday as the Bears’ general manager did social media revolt against the franchise.

“Ryan is going to oversee the entire football operation,” team president Ted Phillips said as he introduced Pace.

Ryan Anyone who Pace had pipe dreams of Phillips’ role reducing didn’t take kindly to the introduction, but the focus should be on what Phillips said first, not second, and something that was emphasized throughout Friday’s media session – the Bears are Pace’s team now, with some front-office collaborating.

Pace discussed the salary cap situation in New Orleans, and keeping up with the theme of a “group effort,” explained how he’ll rely on Phillips and Vice President of Football Administration Cliff Stein for some of the team’s business-football decisions.

alf an hour before we sat down to our black-eyed peas New Year’s Day, I read the following on Facebook: “This January, why not start the year with an empty jar and fill it with notes about good things that happen?

Then, on New Year’s Eve, empty it and see what awesome stuff happened.”

Simple enough, I thought.

And smart. After all, when trying to raise healthy children, it’s not a bad idea to reinforce a simple truth, that what you focus on, grows.

How hard would it be to get my family to try this, I wondered?

I set a Mason jar on the table beside my plate. While the peas and pork-chops were passed, I tied a bit of raffia and ribbon around the top of the jar. The kids shook their heads. They weren’t exactly sure what I was up to, but they weren’t havin’ any.

“No, Mom,” Holly said.

“I am SO not doing that,” Noah added.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose “There,” I said, as I finished tying the bow.

I need a new lid for the jar. The old one is rusty, and the other Mason jar lids in the house are currently occupied – you know, with moonshine and maraschino cherries. Right.

Without a word, I passed out little slips of paper and slid pens across the table. I ate some peas. The kids groaned.

I’d need more than luck to get them on board.

On second thought, maybe I should have just sipped the moonshine.

They would have lapped this up a few years ago, you know, before the facial hair, the headphones and the slamming doors, but I’m nothing if not

hopeful. If no one stomps off in a huff, and we have a few laughs, perhaps next New Year’s Eve, we’ll have ourselves a new tradition.

“That’s fine,” I replied to Noah, as I pondered what to write.

“Maybe just do one?” I added, shrugging with as much casual indifference as I could muster.

“Just jot down something you’re glad about or grateful for – whatever, just for kicks. Could be fun to read them together next New Year’s Eve,” I said, as I dropped my first one into the empty jar.

Then Todd dropped one in, and the kids laughed and followed suit. They’re teenagers, i.e. taking a break from saccharine sentiments, like “I heart unicorns” and “grateful for rainbows,” so I figure this’ll be nothing if not interesting.

In fact, I have a hunch we’ll all be cracking up next New Year’s Eve. Why? My kids are comedians. I can’t wait to see what they write. They’d better not let me down. I’m just counting on some

laughs at this point – not setting the bar too high. Heck, I’ll be thrilled if I can just find the silly jar come next December. You know, under piles of smelly gym clothes, bills and – what’s that I see on the dining room table right now? – day-old banana peels and an empty jar of peanut butter?

Yeah. So. Like a faint beacon on the horizon – especially now, when the world feels so cold and reels from the horrors playing out in France – doing this simple thing when the spirit moves me, even if I do it alone, feels like a relief. A balm. Activism, even. Yes. Call me a soft touch, but I call myself a mom. One who harbors in her heart the belief that gratitude and kindness are more powerful than pens and power rifles. For that, I am grateful.

More than 400 pianists to perform during American Grands 20th anniversary concert KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – More than 400 pianists of all ages and skill levels will perform during American Grands XX – 20th anniversary concert – on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Elgin Community College Arts Center.

The piano performance will take place at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. in the ECC Arts Center’s Blizzard Theatre, located in Building H on the Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

The performance will feature 24 pianists – two per piano – performing using 12 grand pianos all at once, states a news release.

The musical repertoire will consist of classic works

by Sousa, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as contemporary pieces, including an arrangement of “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen.”

This year’s performances also will feature two pieces with three players per piano for a total of 36 players performing at one time.

Per American Grands tradition, all three performances will open with the “Star Spangled Banner” and close with “Star and Stripes Forever.”

“The joy so many have found in American Grands is truly remarkable,” music director Larry Dieffenbach said of American Grands in the release. “It’s grown from one performance to three performances and from a little over 100 performers to over 400. We’re so proud that American Grands has reached this milestone year and can’t wait to celebrate both its history and its future

at these performances.”

This year will mark Dieffenbach’s 19th year with American Grands and his 12th as its music director, the release states. He is on the music faculty at ECC, teaches privately in Geneva and is the organist and music director at the Little Home Church by the Wayside in Wayne. He also is the founder and director of the St. Charles International Piano Competition.

Colin Holman returns as conductor, a role he has held for 19 of the 20 American Grands concerts. He maintains a career as conductor and musicologist in the Chicago area as the music director of the Loyola University Orchestra, Fox Valley Orchestra, Fox Valley Concert Band and the international, award-winning Chicago Brass Band, according to the release.

Jon Mortensen, who has been with American Grands since its inception, will celebrate his 20th season of Grands performances. He will serve, once again, as percussionist, percussion arranger and assistant conductor. Mortensen also serves as principal timpanist for the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the Woodstock Mozart Festival Orchestra. He also is the director of bands at Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin, the release states.

Tickets to American Grands XX cost $24 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and younger. Tickets are available at tickets.elgin.edu, at the ECC Box Office – located in the arts center – or by calling 847-622-0300.

Maintain healthy eating habits during menopause Dear Doctor K: Does menopause cause weight gain?

Dear Reader: In the United States, women typically go through menopause between 47 and 59 years of age. And the average woman gains about one pound per year around the time of menopause. Not surprisingly, we tend to assume that menopause causes weight gain.

Research suggests that there is no direct link between menopause and weight gain. But menopause may play an indirect role.

For example, poor sleep can lead to weight gain. And many menopausal women have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

Lack of sleep may alter the hormones that regulate hunger. If you’re not sleeping well, you may feel hungrier before meals and less full after meals.

Stress can also play a role in weight gain. At menopause, the body stops making the hormone estrogen. This reduces the body’s ability to regulate the hormone cortisol, which helps to manage stress. Higher cortisol levels may trigger an increase in appetite.

Other changes that occur around the same time as menopause may also contribute to weight gain. As women age, muscle mass decreases and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff fat mass increases. This slows metabolism. As a result, the body burns off fewer calories than it did previously.

Many women’s eating patterns change around menopause, due to other changes in their lives. When children move out of the house, some women may no longer cook or eat dinner regularly. Eating infrequently or skipping meals can slow metabolism, further interfering with your body’s ability to burn calories.

There’s another reason that eating patterns start to change around menopause, when kids move out of the house. I’ve had several patients who told me that they always prepared healthy meals when they had kids at home. They knew that what kids ate as children could affect their health in later years. But when the kids left, and they were cooking only for themselves and their spouses, they started preparing higher-calorie meals, with less healthy foods.

Many women also change how

they carry their weight around menopause. Fat tends to move from the hips to the abdomen (belly). Even if this shift in fat stores does not cause an increase in weight, increased abdominal fat does increase the risk of many serious health conditions. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

If you find yourself gaining weight at midlife, refocus on the basics: • Eat a healthful diet.

• Practice portion control.

• Eat at regular intervals and avoid skipping meals.

• Be physically active.

• Find ways to manage your stress.

• Get enough sleep.

These tips may help you to maintain your weight. Even better, they may help you lose weight before, during and after menopause. Avoiding excess weight gain will lower your risks of diabetes and heart disease. It also will help you to live a more healthful life.

distracted driving Dear Teens: Becoming a responsible driver after receiving your driving permit is always a goal, but many times youthful exuberance overpowers good judgment and the result can be devastating.

Poor driving habits are not confined to young drivers, but statistics reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that drivers under the age of 24 are responsible for 39 percent of crashes that cause injury or death even though this age group has only 19 percent of our licensed drivers. Excess speed is the major driving flaw of young drivers, followed by inattention – not keeping one’s eyes on the road. Some teens can say that they never speed when behind the wheel, but can you say that you pay full attention to the task of driving? The NHTSA reminds drivers that many crashes are caused by actions as simple as tuning the radio or as innocent as glancing at a dog on the sidewalk. Carelessness or inattention, even for a split second to change a radio station, can cause a disaster. Research shows that inattention causes 68 percent of rear-end crashes.

Do you use a cellphone while driving?

If you do, your chance of getting into a crash increases by a whopping 400 percent. When dialing a phone number or engaging in intense conversation, the driver is not watching the road like he or she should. The best defense is to pull off the road and stop in a safe place before using the phone.

In our country, that’s more than 1.5 million crashes a year with more than 4,300 crashes each and every day.

Be a safe and wise teen. Drive with caution and obey all traffic laws. You are much too important to become a traffic statistic!

When the dummy comes down, declarer’s first thought is probably that he can win 12 tricks via one spade, six hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. But that requires finding the diamond queen. If he takes the diamond finesse the wrong way, he will go down. Is there something preferable?

No doubt you are unsurprised to learn that there is a better situation. South should first try to establish a third club winner.

However, to do that, he needs to find clubs splitting 4-3 and to have three dummy entries: two for club ruffs and one to cash the 13th club.

What are those dummy doors?

They have to be one club and two diamonds. But how can declarer get those two diamond doors if East has the queen?

After drawing trumps, declarer plays a club to dummy’s king, cashes the club ace and ruffs a club in his hand. If the clubs break 5-2 or worse, South must guess who holds the diamond queen, presumably playing the opponent short in clubs for that card.

However, when clubs divide 4-3, declarer next runs his diamond 10. Here, East wins the trick, but now South has his necessary dummy doors: the diamond ace and jack.
