Joliet candidates forums coming up If you go

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two forums for the crowded Joliet City Council race will be held Wednesday and March 23.

The forum Wednesday is sponsored by a group of neighborhood associations and is free to the public.

The forum March 23 is part of a monthly luncheon held by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and there is a $35 charge for chamber members and a $45 charge for nonmembers.

Both are at the Jacob Henry Mansion ballroom, 15 S. Richards St. Fifteen candidates are running for the three at-large council positions. Atlarge council members are elected citywide. The council also has five district positions elected only by residents in those districts.

Adamowski said questions at the forum will “focus on issues that as neighborhood associations we all share.”

The candidates also have been asked to fill out questionnaires on certain citywide issues that will be distributed at the forum.

As of late last week, Adamowski said 14 of the 15 candidates have confirmed that they will attend.

Joliet man dies after clothes catch fire

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 70-year-old man has died after his clothes caught fire Friday at his Joliet home.

Donnie Creal was pronounced dead at 12:36 p.m. Saturday at the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

At 9:45 p.m. Friday, firefighters were called to Creal’s residence in the 1100 block of Charlesworth Avenue and extinguished a small kitchen fire, Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg said. “[Creal] had been sitting on his enclosed porch watching television with his

Creal spoke with investigators in the ambulance as he was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. He later was taken to Loyola. The medical examiner’s office has ruled his death an accident.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ashley Tardiff and her three children like their new apartment – no mice, no shootings.

“There was a shooting right in front of the house the week we were moving,” Tardiff said of her old place in Joliet.

She looked out the door to see one man chasing another. As bad as that was, Tardiff seemed more relieved to be in a place where she and her three children did not have to worry about mice.

A two-year Army veteran who spent a couple of months in Baghdad, Tardiff is hoping for better times ahead.

Tardiff is one of the first military veterans to move into Hope Manor Joliet.

The 67-unit apartment complex is being built by Volunteers of America of Illinois. The nonprofit is devoted to providing affordable housing to veterans who might otherwise face homelessness.

Tardiff had been paying her rent, but it had become increasingly challenging since she suffered a stroke that has kept her away from her job as a massage therapist. The subsidized housing at Hope Manor, she said, “is going to be a big help getting me on my feet.”

“I want to save up and get my credit fixed and be able to provide more for my children,” said Tardiff, who has been

Tardiff left work in warehousing, which was a natural transition from the Army, where she worked in supplies.

She went to school to learn massage therapy, which pays much more, Tardiff said. But times have been difficult.

Her predicament is typical of many veterans who face homelessness, said Liliana Scales, director of external relations for Volunteers of America of Illinois.

“That’s the rising population of veteran homelessness – female veterans with children,” Scales said.

The first apartment building, which opened in February, is strictly two- or three-bedroom apartments, meaning veterans with families are moving in.

There are 12 apartments in the building.

Trustees OK agreement for Park-n-Ride lot

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board approved an engineering agreement with Baxter and Woodman Consulting Engineers on Monday night that signifies the next step toward a Pace Park-n-Ride lot in the village.

The agreement will pay the firm no more than $321,820.49 for the project, which will cost the village up to $5.8 million, according to an intergovernmental agreement between the village

and Pace.

However, Pace will reimburse the village for those costs.

“Engineering is 100 percent reimbursable by Pace, as well as 100 percent of the construction,” Plainfield Director of Public Works Allen Persons said.

The Park-n-Ride would be on about 10 acres of a 58-acre village-owned plot along Van Dyke Road.

There will be a 400 car parking lot with room for a future expansion to accommodate 600 cars. Commuters can enter from Van Dyke Road with

a traffic signal and turn lanes. There will also be a shelter with washrooms.

“It’s a great project,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said. “I’m looking forward to this moving along.”

Ridership on routes 755 and 855, which go to the Chicago Loop, increased almost six-fold in the past five years. Commuters currently park on the street near the Pace route stop, located southeast of the Van Dyke Road and Lockport Street intersection just west of Village Hall, and at Larry’s Diner.

The village has been pushing for

this lot for several years.

“This project, we know, is high on the priority list for the village,” said Dennis Hogan, of Baxter and Woodman. “The goal is to break ground this fall. So we are on an accelerated schedule to finalize our plans.”

Trustee Brian Wojowski said Valparaiso, Indiana, is the east end of the Pace project and Plainfield is the west end of it.

“It expands and improves the transportation for the residents out there,” Wojowski said. “And it’s going to do the same here.”

Plainfield Fest prepping for move to Riverfront Park

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Fest is likely to switch locations this year.

Plainfield Riverfront Foundation Executive Director Robert Epley addressed the Plainfield Village Board on Monday night and revealed the organization’s plan to relocate the growing festival from the downtown area to the more spacious Riverfront Park and Greg B. Bott Community Park.

The fest is from Friday, July 14, to Sunday, July 16, this year and attracts several thousand people each day.

“We’re almost at capacity in the downtown,” Epley said, adding that Lockport Street has been the heart and soul of Plainfield Fest.

A new pedestrian bridge over the DuPage River now connects the Riverfront Park and Bott Park more easily than ever, and that will serve as a critical link during the fest.

Trustees lent their support and critiques of the proposed change Monday night, after Epley gained support and/or permission to use grounds from Plainfield Central High School, the Plainfield Police Department, the Plainfield Fire Protection District, Plainfield Public Works and the Plainfield Township Highway Department.

“It’s apt that this festival get moved to the riverfront,” Trustee Tom Ruane said.

The carnival will be just north of the baseball fields at Bott Park. Vendors and food trucks will be along River Road. Plainfield Central would be used as the primary parking for attendees.

But the fest location would be somewhat dependent on good weather. A potential obstacle exists with the ground at Riverfront Park having a tendency to soften or become muddy with rain events, not to mention its proximity to the river, which has flooded the park several times.

If weather is nice enough in the

weeks leading up to the fest, Riverfront Park will be home to the beer tent. If it isn’t, Fort Beggs Drive between James Street and Pratt Lane will be closed to make room for the beer tent.

“I love the idea and the layout, provided you can do it. It’s safer to put it in another place, in my opinion,”

Trustee Bill Lamb said.

But fest organizers hope to use fewer police officers for security despite the larger festival area. The change in location should alleviate parking concerns for businesses in the downtown district also. The location plans could be brought to the board for official approval as soon as next week.

Murder suspect sentenced in second gun case Still faces charges in 2015 Joliet slaying

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A murder suspect was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison for a separate gun conviction.

Lonnie M. Pinnick, 26, of Lockport, faced up to 30 years in prison after being caught carrying a revolver during a traffic stop in Joliet on Aug. 28, 2015 – his third firearm arrest. After Judge Dave Carlson issued the sentence, defense attorney Jeff Tomczak demanded a speedy trial on the murder case to

“start the clock” on that matter.

Five days before his gun arrest, Pinnick was involved in a shooting in the 1400 block of Englewood Avenue in Joliet. While his friend Keyshaunna Barfield and her cousin, Sjontre Thompson, were leaving a party, Pinnick approached their car to say goodbye.

According to police, Pinnick took out a handgun and fired, wounding Barfield and killing Thompson. Tomczak said that the three were having a friendly conversation when

Pinnick returned fire at unknown attackers across a courtyard.

The shots that killed Thompson and wounded Barfield were fired by a semi-automatic Lonnie M. handgun.

Pinnick went on to play basketball at Triton College until he was shot in the leg while leaving the funeral of another shooting victim. His mother, Shawanna Pinnick, testified Monday that the sudden end of his sports career led Pinnick to depression and “hanging out with the wrong people.”

Carlson emphasized the pending murder case did not affect his decision Monday.

“I have to issue a sentence that’s fair. ... I also have a job to protect the public,” Carlson said.

Pinnick chose not to address the court based on Tomczak’s advice regarding his upcoming murder trial.

MINOOKA – A motorist is in critical condition after a crash Monday morning in Minooka.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred at 8:55 a.m. at the intersection of Grove Road and Route 52.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Brittany Hutcheson, 28, was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition that was stopped

at the stop sign on Grove Road facing north.

A 1996 Mack truck, driven by Jose Guardado, 51, was traveling east on Route 52 approaching Grove Road.

“For unknown reasons, the Ford entered the intersection in front of the Mack truck,” state police stated in a news release. “The front of the Mack truck struck the driver’s side of the Ford.”

The board on Jan. 18 approved the search committee, which is cochaired by Spoonhour and board Vice President Richard Myers. The board is expected to receive a presentation from Illinois Association of School Board at its regular meeting Wednesday on the desired characteristics for the new superintendent.

Bridges-Webb was hired by the board last summer as the interim leader after the resignation of former Superintendent Sonya Whitaker, who moved on to lead Harvey School District 152.

Whitaker’s resignation May 18 followed a period during which board President Katie Ulmer and Joseph Ryan, former vice president, clashed over several district issues.

Ryan resigned from the board last June, citing disagreements with other board members.

Whitaker and the board were also previously sued by a former employee. The federal lawsuit ended with a settlement in which the board agreed to pay the former employee and her attorneys through the district’s insurer.

LOCKPORT – Fairmont School District 89 officials are searching for a new leader who may start in July.

A search committee at the Lockport district has been at work since January to bring in a new superintendent who will take over for interim superintendent Lela Bridges-Webb.

Assisting the search committee is the Illinois Association of School Boards, which has posted on its website the opening for the position with a start date of July 1.

“We’re trying to search for the best possible person for this position and we value input from everybody,” said Louis Spoonhour, board member and co-chairman of the search committee.

The seven-member search committee – consisting of parents, teachers, board members and one administrator – has developed characteristics for the ideal candidate.

The committee has also developed an online survey asking the community about what characteristics the new superintendent should have, he said.

Spoonhour said he would expect the selection for a new superintendent to take place in May. Bridges-Webb said she had no plans to continue as superintendent because she is retired and limited to working 100 days. According to her June 30 contract, Bridges-Webb is limited to 100 work days – five hours each day – for the 2016-17 school year.

She said District 89 is a wonderful place to work.

Teacher from Frankfort is Golden Apple finalist

fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – An area teacher has been chosen as a finalist for an award that recognizes excellence in teaching.

Hala Tibi Qato, of Frankfort, is one of 33 finalists for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Qato teaches Arabic and Islamic studies, as well as religion, for elementary, junior high and high school students at Aqsa Hala Tibi School in Bridgeview.

Qato Qato said she was very grateful for the recognition.

“You feel like as a teacher it’s nice after all these years to see someone who really appreciates your work,” she said.

Qato earned an associate degree in education from Ramallah Teaching

College in Palestine and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, according to Aqsa School’s website.

She said her father inspired her to become a teacher, as he worked as a teacher, principal and school superintendent.

Qato and other finalists will experience a final round of review and classroom observations before the selection and announcement this spring of the award recipients, according to Golden Apple.

Since 1986, Golden Apple, an education nonprofit in Illinois, has annually chosen 10 teachers to receive the award for excellence in teaching. Award recipients are inducted into the Golden Apple Academy of Educators and receive recognition on WTTW, a $5,000 cash award and a paid spring quarter sabbatical at Northwestern University.

Police: Man drove into pond

bstanley@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN TOWNSHIP – A Bourbonnais man was charged with driving under the influence Friday after he allegedly drove into a pond.

About 10 p.m., Will County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Manhattan firefighters were sent to Schoolhouse and Smith roads, where a 2001 John J. Chevrolet Silverado Sanders had gone into the water.

They arrived to find John J. Sanders, 38, on the shore, sheriff’s spokeswoman

Kathy Hoffmeyer said. “[Sanders] stated he was traveling south on Schoolhouse and while attempting to stop for the stop sign, skidded off the road into the water,” Hoffmeyer said. “[He] was able to exit his vehicle and swim to shore.”

Hoffmeyer noted deputies found no skid marks on the roadway or guardrail, but several trees were damaged where the Silverado left the road.

After being released from Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Sanders, of the 1200 block of Todd Lane, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, driving without insurance, failing to obey a stop sign and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Residents get Section 8 vouchers subsidizing rent that ranges from $938 for a one-bedroom unit to $1,370 for a three-bedroom unit. The rent is higher than what Tardiff was paying before, but the subsidy makes it affordable.

“People think of affordable housing – we don’t want them to think of affordable housing as having mice or having a shooting in the street,” Scales said.

VOA provides services on-site, including job counseling, therapists and tutors for schoolchildren. Financial advice also is available for people like Tardiff, who aspire to fix their credit and eventually own their own homes.

Tardiff said she did not get much advice on what to do next in 2006 when she left the Army.

Once she was on her own, Tardiff did not even realize that she could get tuition assistance until she stopped at the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission because she heard they could help her get a bus pass so she could get around town when she did not have a car. It was the commission that also informed her about Hope Manor Joliet.

She described the help she has received because of her veteran status as being “like a miracle.”

Other veterans moving into the new apartments have had similar reactions to their new homes, said Jamie Jones, property manager for Hope Manor Joliet.

“To say they are happy is not the proper word,” Jones said. “A couple of the families we moved in were sleeping in cars, sleeping in shelters. They’re very grateful. They’re shocked.”

Students learn from Student Government Day

Shaw Media correspondent Some new faces graced the dais at the last Channahon Village Board meeting.

It was Student Government Day, and Student Council members from Channahon Junior High School led the meeting, calling roll, introducing proclamations and even voting on one.

“It went great,” said Laney McMillin, one of the Student Council ambassadors. “It was fun because we had the choice to say what we were thinking.”

McMillin spent the morning shadowing the village’s engineering project manager Don Kinzler.

“I learned how to rate roads for their condition,” she told the rest of the board and the audience at the village board meeting.

This is the second year for the event, brainstormed by Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher and Channahon School District 17 Superintendent Nick Henkle to teach students about local government.

The students began their morning on Casimir Pulaski Day at the village hall, shadowing village leaders. Student Council President Dylan Meyer got to shadow Schumacher.

“It would actually be really cool,” Meyer said of being mayor. “You could have a decision about what’s happening in the community.”

He said he thought it was a great idea for the student council, the elected leaders of his school, to get to see behind the scenes of village government.

“We learn what they go through,” he said, “and maybe it will influence what we want to do when we get older.”

Student Council Ambassador Hannah Karczewski shadowed Police Chief Jeff Wold. One of the first things the two did together was to go through police activity from the day before. There were traffic stops and citations, a lost animal, a citizen assist, an ambulance assist, a burglary investigation on West Andrews Avenue and suspicious autos and persons reports.

The students also sat in on staff’s weekly Monday morning meeting and took a tour of the facilities.

Louis is survived by his loving children, Janet (Richard) Keto of Escondido, California, Carol (Stanley) Allen of Joliet, James (Lee) Bakos of Ottawa, IL and the late Michael (Cheryl) Bakos. Dear grandfather of Melanie (Walker) Burl, Allison (Eric) Cohen, the late Nicholas Keto, Deborah (Ellen) Allen, Wendy (Joseph) Fleischauer, Christine (Michael) Stone, Christian Bakos, Benjamin Bakos and Michael S. Bakos. Beloved great-grandfather of Mackenzie, Delaney, Natalie, Sierra, Max, Molly, Madison, Anthony, Nathan and Claire. He leaves behind the love of his life, Beverly Kolodziej, and her children, Thomas, Leah, Kevin, Dawn and James. Also survived by one brotherin-law, Carl Guardia; and one sister-in-law, Wanda Bakos. Born in Joliet, on January 11, 1923, to Anton and Julia (Sari) Bakos, Louis worked at and retired from Texaco Refinery in Lockport after 40 years of service. He proudly served in the United States Army, W.W. II, in the South Pacific Theater, including the Philippines, Australia and Japan.

Lou was a legendary fisherman, expert mushroom picker, excellent cook, accomplished bowler, gardener, and handyman. He enjoyed many fishing outings with his dear nephew Carl Guardia Jr. He traveled to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight Chicago in May 2010. He was the Yankees’ No. 1 fan, and enjoyed a visit to the old Yankee Stadium in 2008.

Jeff was a diehard Chicago Blackhawks fan, as well as a Green Bay Packers fan. He loved the outdoors, and all creatures large and small. Jeff will be remembered for his love of spending time on Lardi Lake, where he played pond hockey, spent time with friends and family, and fished with his daughter.

Survivors include his parents; one daughter, Kayla Bomba Lardi of Wilmington; his fiancée, Kelly Sievert; brother, Anthony Lardi (fiancée - Alexa Krueger) of Shorewood; niece, Bella Lardi; maternal grandmother, Margaret “Peggy” Ragain of Coal City; paternal grandparents, James and Bernice Lardi of Wilmington; his future mother-in-law, Gale (Bob) Brady of Minnesota; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, as well as his beloved pets: Hazel, Chief, Ferby and Kaner.

Jeff was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gerald Ragain; father-in-law, Robert J. DePratt; and the grandmother of his fiancée Kelly, Ima Jean Sayers.

Eyeliner: Using a flesh-colored or white eyeliner on the inside rim of your lower lash line helps make eyes look bigger and brighter.

If you usually use a black or brown eyeliner to outline your top and bottom lash lines, try using a brightly colored one instead. Blue will make the whites of your eyes appear brighter. If your eyes are smaller, avoid using liner on the inner third of the eye; it makes eyes appear closer set.

Concealer: Apply concealer to under-eye circles after applying foundation - this creates better camouflage. A darker shade of concealer will help disguise puffy eyes, as darker colors recede.

Mascara: Use a lash primer before applying mascara to make lashes look longer and thicker.

Try using mascara only on the upper lashes to make eyes appear lifted. Experiment with false eyelashes, as they make lashes look bigger and more pronounced.

Eyeshadow: Avoid using an eye shadow the same color as your eyes, or nothing will stand out.

A shimmery champagne color in the inner corner of each eye helps brighten the entire face. Use a light (highlighting) eyeshadow on the brow bone to add contrast to the color on your lid and in the crease. A dramatic smoky eye combines a little shimmer, a lot of dark eyeshadow, and smudging of the eyeliner and eyeshadow. If you use dark colors around your eyes, be sure to keep the rest of your face soft and light.

Gene is survived by Dorothy Rosalie (Forte) Meintel, Loving and devoted wife for 65 years, married on August 11, 1951 in Joliet, IL. Children, Lois O’Donnell, Julia Nickel, Patricia (Steve) Scott, Louis (Cheryl) Meintel, Eugenia (Bill) Sobodas, Doug (Connie) Parini. Gene and Dolly have 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews around the country that he treated as his own children throughout their lives.

Preceded in death by his parents, Louis Walter Meintel and Cosie Belle (Cox) Meintel; daughter, Florence (Lorie) Parini; son-in-law, Teddy J. Wright; grandson, Louis Eugene Meintel.

Gene graduated from Tridelphia High School in W. VA. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Guam during the Korean War for 3 years and then served as a Marine drill instructor in Parris Island, S.C., for a year.

After serving in the military, Gene returned to Joliet with his beautiful wife and worked 2-3 jobs as they raised their 6 children. He retired from Commonwealth Edison after 34 years of dedicated and honorary service as a master mechanic and area maintenance engineer, and an esteemed member and contributor of the Total Job Management Team for Nuclear Power Plants around the area.

Gene did not stop working after retirement.

He made things, he fixed things, he devoted his life to everyone who needed anything.

He became a connoisseur cook and fed the hungry. He took care of the sick and the dying. Gene was bigger than life to everyone who ever had the honor of meeting him. He

was a true patriarch of the family and he was our hero. It was his passion for his family, his troops, his employees, his church, and his friends that gave him the drive to always better himself, to become more knowledgeable about everything he did.

He will be dearly missed, and we are so grateful to have had him for 86 beautiful years. He is with his family in heaven now.

A very special thank you to the Hospice Team, especially nurse, Jennifer, who were so dedicated and kindhearted during this most difficult time.

CHICAGO – The U.S. attorney in Chicago who oversaw the hush-money case of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and who helped focus federal scrutiny on local police resigned Monday, lamenting in an open letter that “at no moment” during his 3½-year tenure “did the gun violence abate” in the nation’s third-largest city.

Zachary Fardon resigned from the post that’s widely seen as the second-most powerful job in Chicago, next to the mayor, three days after his new boss at the U.S. Department of Justice, Jeff Sessions, asked 46 prosecutors held over from the President Barack Obama’s administration to step down.

Fardon felt pressure from the start to make stemming violence his top priority, and pressure built as killings spiked – hitting a 19-year high in 2016 with 762 homicides, more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

CHICAGO – A judge is allowing two of four people charged in the videotaped beating of a mentally disabled man to be represented by private attorneys.

The Cook County Public Defender’s Office had requested that the office not be assigned to all four because doing so could pose a conflict of interest. On Monday,

President Donald Trump tweeted in January, “If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’..., I will send in the Feds!”

The five-page letter Fardon handed to reporters didn’t directly criticize Trump or Sessions. But it alluded to questions about the new administration’s commitment to Chicago police reforms in the wake of a Department of Justice report released in the waning days of Obama’s presidency that found officers too often used lethal force.

The negotiation of a court-enforced agreement between the city of Chicago and the Department of Justice laying out a detailed police reform plan was critical to building a culture of integrity in the police department, Fardon said.

“It’s past time to give our police officers what they need to succeed,” he wrote. He added a court-enforced plan “is the only way that will happen.”

Fardon, 50, described studying data and law enforcement methods of combating violence after becoming

U.S. attorney, saying he was “horrified and confused ... by the constant drumbeat” of deaths, especially of young people caught in the crossfire.

But he wrote: “At no moment during those three and a half years did the gun violence abate. Every month, every year, innocents died.”

Fardon for years has said there are limits to what U.S. prosecutors can do to reduce violent crime, saying poverty and other social ills underpin the problem. He has pointed to his prosecution of gangs and drug dealers, as well as a stress on bringing federal gun charges, as proof his staff did all it could to tamp down violence.

Fardon on Monday broached half a dozen proposals he said could help.

One, he wrote, was having the FBI, DEA and ATF work under a single command structure – possibly in a pilot program only in Chicago – to streamline bids to fight violent crime.

He also noted street-gang attacks are often provoked by online threats, saying one idea is to curb access to social media of those with criminal

gang ties.

“I recognize that First Amendment issues come into play, but let’s test those limits,” he said.

Fardon dismissed the idea – raised from time to time in Illinois – deploying National Guard troops into highcrime parts of Chicago, saying that would send the wrong message to people in affected areas that, “This is war and you are the enemy.”

Fardon’s highest profile prosecution was Hastert, who is serving a 15-month prison sentence for breaking banking laws as he sought to pay $3.5 million in hush money to a former student to who Hastert sexually abused when he worked as a high-school wrestling coach. If he could have, Fardon has said he would have pressed for sex-abuse charges against the Illinois Republican. But statutes of limitation had long since run out.

Fardon’s resignation was effective immediately Monday and his longtime No. 2, Joel R. Levin, becomes the acting U.S. attorney until a permeant replacement is selected.

The state’s attorney’s office said the judge has yet to decide who will represent Jordan Hill and that Tanishia Covington will be represented by the public defender’s office. Prosecutors said the four people seen on a video posted live on Facebook beating and taunting the white victim have been charged with kidnapping and hate crimes.

The congressman’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Gadlin, confirmed that Carolyn Rush died Monday morning. Rush’s office said she died of congestive heart failure at the University of Chicago Hospital with the congressman and her children at her bedside.

Gorsuch’s record on immigration mixed The ASSOCIATED PRESS If Neil Gorsuch wins confirmation to the Supreme Court, he could cast the deciding vote on President Donald Trump’s travel ban against immigrants from certain countries. But it’s far from certain how he would vote.

According to an Associated Press review of Gorsuch’s rulings, he has not written extensively about immigration policy during a decade on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

And the few rulings he has been involved in do not reveal how he might decide if given the opportunity to consider an immigration ban.

Many of the cases involved people challenging their prison sentences for returning to the U.S. illegally after having been deported. He has often been deferential to immigration authorities, but also has sided with immigrants.

“His record on immigration is a mixed bag, so it’s hard to predict how he would rule on any challenge to the executive order,” said Melissa Crow, legal director for the American Immigration Council, which challenged Trump’s original ban.

That order, which would have banned people from seven majority Muslim counties, was put on hold last month by a federal appeals court, but Trump signed a new version March 6. That one removed Iraq from the list and eliminated a provision to give priority to religious minorities in allowing immigrants in.

The new order is to take effect Thursday, pending the outcome of legal challenges. It would not affect current visa holders but would bar new visas for people from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya. And it would temporarily shut down the U.S. refugee program.

If Gorsuch makes the ninth vote, which way would he go?

While his rulings on major immigration policy are limited, they do offer insight into his thinking.

In a 2013 case, he wrote, “No doubt, we can and will strike down regulations that defy Congress’ statutes or the Constitution’s guarantees. We do not, however, amend, revise or undo administrative regulations just because they may not be to a litigant’s liking or our own.”

“Unless some violation of law is involved, the business of deciding the sometimes hard, often fine and nearly always contestable questions of immigration policy belongs to the legislature and executive, not the courts.”

Michael Dorf, a constitutional law professor at Cornell University, said Gorsuch’s sympathy for people in religious cases, a general skepticism of executive power and a history of ruling for immigrants give some reason to

think he could be sympathetic to plaintiffs challenging a ban on people from certain countries.

But, Dorf added, “At this point it’s still sort of a guessing game.”

Gorsuch has shown sympathy for religious freedom, notably siding with employers who objected to providing employees coverage for contraceptives. He also found it was wrong for a Wyoming prison to deny use of an existing prison sweat lodge to an inmate who wanted to use it to exercise his Native American religious beliefs. But it’s not clear how those considerations would factor into a ban on people from majority Muslim countries.

In one immigration case, Gorsuch sided with a Somalian convicted of lying under oath during grand jury questioning about his asylum application, saying the immigrant should have been provided an interpreter. In another case, he was part of a decision that found the court lacked jurisdiction to consider an appeal from Mexican immigrants who argued deportation would create an undue hardship because their teenage kids were U.S. citizens.

Few worried about likely Fed rate hike

WASHINGTON – For years after the Great Recession ended, investors fretted – sometimes panicked – over the prospect that the Federal Reserve might begin to raise interest rates from record lows.

Now? The Fed seems all but sure to raise rates Wednesday for the third time in 15 months and to signal more hikes probably coming. And the response from investors has been something akin to a yawn.

Wall Street appears too busy extending the stock market rally that began with President Donald Trump’s election in November, cheered by the prospect of tax cuts, an easing of regulations and higher spending for infrastructure to worry about a rate hike.

Fed watchers, it seems, are more buoyed by expectations for a vigorous economy than worried about whether slightly higher rates might slow growth.

When Chairwoman Janet Yellen and several other Fed officials separately suggested earlier this month that the economy was sturdy enough to withstand a modest raising of loan rates, investors quickly raised their estimate of the probability of a rate hike

After Friday’s robust February jobs report – 235,000 added jobs, solid pay gains and a dip in the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent – the likelihood has grown to 91 percent, according to the CME Group, which tracks investor expectations of Fed actions.

Yet no one seems very concerned.

“We’re just at a different place now than in 2013 when there was a lot of angst and uncertainty about the economy’s prospects,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.

“Now, the fundamentals of the economy are much better. We are close to full employment and investors feel more comfortable about where we are.”

In light of Friday’s jobs report, optimism about Trump’s economic program and other signs that growth may pick up, some economists said they were raising their forecast for the number of rate increases this year from three to perhaps four.

“I think a March rate hike is a fait accompli,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University, Channel Islands, who expects four rate increases in 2017.

“The more important question is: How many more hikes they will give us for the balance of the year?”

If the Fed is no longer unsettling investors with the hint of a forthcoming rate increase, it marks quite a change from the anxiety that prevailed after 2008, when the central bank cut its key rate to a record low and kept it there for seven years. During those years, any slight shift in sentiment about when the Fed might begin raising rates

– a step that would lead eventually to higher loan rates for consumers and businesses – was enough to move global markets.

In 2013, then-Chairman Ben Bernanke sent markets into a panic merely by mentioning that the Fed was contemplating slowing the pace of its bond purchases, which it was using then to keep long-term borrowing rates low.

But now, the economy is widely considered sturdy enough to handle modestly higher loan rates. The unemployment rate, at 4.7 percent, is below the 4.8 percent level the Fed has deemed an indication of full employment. And inflation, which had stayed undesirably low for years, is edging near the 2 percent annual rate that the Fed views as optimal.

And while the broadest gauge of the economy’s health – the gross domestic product – remains well below levels associated with a healthy economy, many analysts say they’re optimistic that Trump’s proposed tax cuts, infrastructure spending increases and deregulation may accelerate growth.

Those proposals have lifted the confidence of business executives and offset concerns that investors might otherwise have had about the effects of Fed rate increases.

Justice Dept. seeks more time on wiretapping evidence

WASHINGTON – Facing a Monday deadline, the Justice Department asked lawmakers for more time to provide evidence backing up President Donald Trump’s unproven assertion that his predecessor wiretapped his New York skyscraper during the election.

The request came as the White House appeared to soften Trump’s explosive allegation.

The House intelligence committee said it would give the Justice Department until March 20 to comply with the evidence request. That’s the date of the committee’s first open hearing on the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and possible contacts between Trump associates and Russia.

A spokesman for the committee’s Republican chairman said that if the Justice Department doesn’t meet the new deadline, the panel might use its subpoena power to gather information.

“If the committee does not receive a response by then, the committee will ask for this information during the March 20 hearing and may resort to a compulsory process if our questions

Trump’s assertions have put his administration in a bind. Current and former administration officials have been unable to provide any evidence of the Obama administration wiretapping

Trump Tower, yet the president’s aides have been reluctant to publicly contradict their boss.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer tried to clarify Trump’s comments Monday, saying the president wasn’t using the word wiretapping literally, noting that Trump had put the term in

quotation marks.

“The president used the word wiretap in quotes to mean broadly surveillance and other activities,” Spicer said.

He also suggested Trump wasn’t accusing former President Barack Obama specifically, but instead referring to the actions of the Obama administration.

Trump himself has not commented on the matter since his March 4 tweets, in which he said he had “just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory.”

He also wrote: “Is it legal for a sitting President to be ‘wire tapping’ a race for president?”

In two other tweets, Trump described Obama tapping his phones, but did not put the phrases in quotation marks.

The president’s accusations against Obama came amid numerous political questions surrounding his associates’ possible ties to Russia. The FBI is investigating Trump associates’ contacts with Russia during the election, as are House and Senate intelligence committees.

The White House has asked those committees to also investigate Trump’s unverified wiretapping allegations against Obama.

I think that buying 300 shares of Blackstone Mortgage Trust (BXMT-$31) and 200 shares of Dominion Energy (D-$76) makes a lot of sense for a conservative widow who’s 71 years young and seeking high yield with modest safety.

BXMT is a mortgage real estate investment trust that is unlike other mortgage REITs in that investors actually benefit from rising interest rates because of the floating-rate nature of its loan portfolio. BXMT’s conservative strategy invests in a senior loan portfolio that is 100 percent performing and has never had a default. So as rates rise – and you can bet your sweet bippy they will – BXMT’s dividends will rise, too. And that’s the frosting on the cake.

BXMT originates and purchases senior mortgages that are collateralized by properties in the U.S. and Europe. BXMT’s well-diversified portfolio consists of 118 loans, with

an average loan size of $120 million, and approximately 85 percent of these loans are issued with floating interest rates. As a result, BXMT’s portfolio is generally dependent on long-term interest rates. And as Libor rates increase, BXMT’s profits are figured to grow by about 3 percent for each Libor rate increase of 1 percent. Today’s one-year Libor rate is 1.68456 percent.

BXMT expects to modestly increase its 2017 income to $325 million, and its 62-cent quarterly dividend yields 8 percent. But if the Federal Reserve raises rates again (it may raise rates twice in 2017), BXMT’s management will also increase the dividend.

Wall Street believes that the stock will trade in a narrow range – between $29 and $33 – over the next four years. And the Street believes that in that four-year time frame, there’s a good possibility the current $2.48 dividend will be raised to $2.78, which would be a sweet 8.9 percent yield on today’s purchase price.

Inside Washington: Plane fire safety rules stall under Trump

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A year ago, the U.S. government was campaigning for an international ban on shipments of rechargeable batteries on passenger planes because the batteries can self-ignite, creating intense fires capable of destroying an airliner.

“The risk is immediate and urgent,” Angela Stubblefield, a U.S. aviation official, declared then.

Today, that urgency has evaporated as safety regulations stall under President Donald Trump’s push to ease what he sees as red tape holding back the economy. The International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency that sets global aviation safety standards, decided last year to ban bulk shipments of lithium-ion batteries on international passenger flights. On cargo flights, the batteries can be charged to no more than 30 percent, a level that may reduce the likelihood of fires.

As a result, countries around the world have been adopting the new international standard for domestic flights as well. The Obama administration also looked to do so, submitting rules for

publication that makes them binding.

But after Trump took office on Jan. 20, he signed an executive order freezing the publication of new regulations. That means airlines and cargo operators remain free to ignore the standard for domestic flights.

The Obama administration had considered the change so urgent that it was fast-tracked in the rulemaking process.

Trump’s executive order says urgent safety rules can be exempted from the freeze, but the new administration isn’t invoking that exemption for battery shipments.

“This is part of our ongoing regulatory review,” the Transportation Department said in a statement. “The safe movement of hazardous materials remains a priority. We will provide updates as soon as decisions are made with regard to these and other issues at hand.” No time frame was provided.

Rechargeable batteries are used in consumer products ranging from cellphones and laptops to electric cars. Manufacturers like them because they pack more energy into smaller packages, but the batteries can self-ignite if they have a manufacturing flaw, are damaged, exposed to excessive heat, overcharged or

packed too closely together. The fires can burn up to 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit, close to the melting point of the aluminum used in aircraft construction.

Since 2006, three cargo jets have been destroyed and four pilots killed by inflight fires that investigators say were either started by batteries or made more severe by their proximity.

Most passenger carriers and some cargo operators are voluntarily abiding by the international standard for their domestic operations for the time being.

Trade associations for the U.S. and international airline industries, as well as the Air Line Pilots Association, say they support extending the standard to domestic flights.

But lobbyists for the battery industry, which opposed the international standard when it was adopted last year, are urging administration officials to make changes that would allow certain batteries to continue to be shipped on passenger flights. The U.N. agency standard already allows for limited exemptions, but lobbyists are asking for blanket exemptions for medical-device batteries and shipments to remote locations and other changes.

The position of U.S. negotiators last

year was that medical-device batteries were no less dangerous than other kinds.

Extending the international ban to domestic flights is “a matter of life and death,” said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., the House transportation committee’s senior Democrat and an advocate of banning air shipments of batteries.

“If we don’t start following the ICAO guidelines and stop stuffing giant boxes of lithium batteries that are fully charged into passenger aircraft, sooner or later we’re going to kill a lot of people,” he said. “When something is this critical that it will take down an airplane, voluntary compliance with a nonexistent rule is not adequate.”

But Bob Richard, a battery industry lobbyist, said people living in the Alaskan outback, for example, might not be able to receive batteries for their backup heaters or emergency beacons if the international standard is extended to domestic flights.

Under Trump, “regulators are going to be held more accountable for understanding the impacts of their rules,” Richard said. “I think that will cause agencies to take a closer look at the implications.”

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – NAIA No. 1-ranked University of St. Francis dealt the early blows, but defending champion Marian University (Indiana) delivered the final punches to end the Saints’ magical 2016-17 season with a 64-56 defeat Monday night in the semifinal round of the NAIA National Tournament.

Knights take their 34-3 record and 22game winning streak into Tuesday night’s title game against either No. 2 Concordia (Nebraska) or No. 3 Saint Xavier. St. Francis closes its historic season at 34-2.

“They punched us in the mouth right away,” said Marian coach Katie Gearlds, whose team fall behind 14-8 after the first quarter and 19-10 two minutes into the second. “But at the end, a little more went our way. We were fortunate to get out of here with a win.”

USF senior Charnelle Reed sparked the Saints early, scoring eight of her team-high 16 points in the opening quarter. The return of senior Jordan Giddings to the fold after emergency

surgery one week earlier extended the lead to its highest margin when her 3-pointer provided the Saints a ninepoint edge.

That is when Marian started to fight off the punches thrown by the Saints. After allowing numerous offensive rebounds by USF leading to 10 first-half second-chance points, Marian got more aggressive, keyed by Jessica Almeida.

“We needed to be a little more aggressive, and I told Jessica to start playing like you’re the best player on the floor,” Gearlds said.

After contributing only two first-quarter points, Almeida came back with eight in the second, five in the third and seven in the decisive

fourth for a game-high 22 points. She hit 6 of 10 shots and 10 of 11 from the foul line.

The Knights as a team also hit 8 of 14 field goal attempts in the second quarter after making good on just four of 13 first-quarter attempts. A 15-4 run sparked by Almeida enabled Marian to take its first lead with 1:50 remaining in the quarter, and the Knights hung on for a 27-25 lead at the break.

“We had the great start and threw the punches early,” USF coach Samantha Quigley Smith said. “But they took us out of things and really made us struggle on the offensive end, especially in the second half.

BOLINGBROOK – There aren’t many similarities between this season’s Bolingbrook boys basketball team and the squad that claimed third place in 2014-15.

Other than what’s on the front of the jerseys and most of the coaches on the staff, the current edition of the Raiders definitely has a different look than the team that was led by seniors Prentiss Nixon, Brodric Thomas, Julian Torres and Dimitri Akenten, among others.

However, one thing has been similar for coach Rob Brost’s current team with the one from two seasons ago and that has been the path that they have navigated in the playoffs.

Both teams survived upset bids in the regional finals and then had an easier time of things in the sectional semifinals. And each group also had to rally to capture sectional championships in matchups involving the top two seeds in the sectional.

They also went up against darkhorse winners of their sectionals in the supersectional and in both cases, the reward is a meeting with one of the state’s best teams in the semifinals.

For the second time in three years Bolingbrook has won a sectional championship, which is impressive since prior to 2015 the program had only pulled off that feat once, in 1985.

But the parallels with the postseason paths for both sectional title winners suggests that even though the 28-1 Raiders are favored over 25-5 Naperville North in Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. DeKalb Supersectional, it would be unwise for them to take things for granted.

While Brost hopes that his second-ranked Raiders assure themselves of another trophy by moving on to Friday’s semifinals in Peoria against either No. 1 Edwardsville or No. 3 Simeon, he’d also like to see this supersectional be less dramatic than the one two years ago when West Aurora took things right down to the wire.

But while the Raiders are obviously sky-high after rallying past Joliet West in the sectional finals, it’s a good bet that the unheralded Huskies, who are in a supersectional for the first time since 1998 and are seeking their initial trophy in the sport, hope to spoil the party.

“We try not to compare the years, but it’s just kind of has worked itself out that way,” Brost said of the similar playoff results.

“There’s only eight teams that are playing in the state quarterfinals and we’re fortunate to be one of them. We take pride in developing players and I think that anybody who’s looked at our program in the last five years can honestly say that we’re one of the top programs in the state. That’s good, but that doesn’t win you games.

“Naperville North is really good and very well-coached and will create some problems for us. They’re good enough to get a trophy this year, that’s for sure. Coach (Jeff) Powers does a great job with his program and they have very good players. So it’s going to be a challenge for us, to say the least.

“We’ve come back against teams before this season, but Joliet West is an elite team, so to do it against a team of that caliber shows what we’re capable of but also shows that we’re capable of playing incon-

sistent at times. So it was great on the one hand and a good learning experience for us on the other.”

The only two members of this year’s Raiders who were also on the 2015 state squad, which finished third, are seniors Nana Akenten and Brandon Lawani, who each saw limited time.

“There are two of us that were on that team and we saw what they did to get to where they were and their mindset every practice and how they came out for every game,” Akenten said. “We’re trying to relate that to this season. We’ve obviously gotten pretty far, but at this point, you really can’t underestimate anybody. Everybody’s good so we make sure that everyone’s on the same page with the same end goal, which is winning a state championship.

“The game with West was a dog fight and they definitely showed why they’re one of the best teams in the state. Upsets usually happen when a team thinks that it’s going to be easy and the other team will

come out with a lot more energy, so we’re not taking anyone for granted and we want to keep the same intensity that we’d have for any other game. I’m pretty confident in my team right now so we’ll see how it goes.”

Lawani said that he also learned some valuable lessons while on the 2015 squad.

“One thing that I learned was that when things aren’t going your way, you just have to believe that you can come back,” Lawani said.

“You just need to do what your coaches tell you to do and trust your teammates and it can work but if you try to play hero ball, it’s not going to work. If you take good shots, run plays and also play tough ‘D’, it contributes to winning.

“Earlier this year in some games, sometimes one or two guys would play hero ball, but now we’ve all bought in because we want to win. No one’s complaining about playing time or this and that and everyone is accepting their role, which has been good for all of us.”

Bolingbrook’s pressure could be super again Before last Friday’s championship game of the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional, I said that if Bolingbrook could get past Joliet West, the Raiders would win the DeKalb Supersectional on Tuesday night.

If that happened, they would play in the state semifinals at Peoria and have as much right to win the state championship as anyone.

The “if” in the first paragraph was huge, however. I had a feeling Joliet West would be able to do some of the things that got them the 12-point lead late in the third quarter – and would escape with a narrow victory.

On the flip side, all season we have seen how devastating the Bolingbrook press can be. West was the latest victim as Bolingbrook used a 20-2 run over a three-minute span to take a 6256 lead. After the Tigers clawed back to within 66-64 with 2 minutes left, the Raiders finished off a 78-66 triumph.

That means a trip Tuesday night to the Convocation Center on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb. Bolingbrook’s opponent will be Naperville North, a 77-72 winner over Wheaton North in Hinsdale Central Sectional final.

Before the postseason began, many felt Wheaton Warrenville South and Benet Academy would play for the title at Hinsdale Central. However, Wheaton North eliminated Benet, 64-55, in the York Regional final and Naperville North opened the sectional

After hitting just 11 of 30 firsthalf shots, the Saints were held even more in check after the break, going 11 for 35 to finish at 33.8 percent for the game. Marian was slightly better at 40.8 percent.

The third quarter went back and forth between the two prize fighters, despite the Saints being without Reed the final 7:43 after picking up her third foul. Four of the seven ties in the game came in that 10-minute set with Marian nudging ahead 42-40 at the stop.

Joana Soeiro, the other half of the Knights’ guard tandem that combined with Almeida for 37 points, provided the first four points of the fourth quarter to go up 46-40 before Reed’s basket at the 6:46 mark, and from there the Saints were in catch-up mode.

Kamari Jordan (nine points, nine rebounds) would get the Saints as close as 51-49 with 3:06 left to play, and USF had two oth-

For reference, Wheaton Warrenville South’s only loss entering the postseason was 50-42 to Joliet Central in the championship game of the State Farm Classic at Christmas.

Make no mistake, Naperville North (25-5) is a worthy supersectional opponent for Bolingbrook (28-1).

The Huskies lost to Downers Grove South, 72-67, on Jan. 27 in the Jack Tosh Classic at York, now have won 19 of their last 20. The only blemish in that span was the 38-35 loss to Wheaton Warrenville South on Feb. 22.

Observers in this area who have seen Naperville North the Huskies have similarities to the Benet team of a year ago that ended Joliet West’s tournament run, 67-59, in the DeKalb Supersectional. That’s a compliment.

Naperville North boasts size in 6-foot-7 Chris Johnson and 6-6 Mitch Lewis and 6-6 Tom Welch. Lewis, a senior forward, is the Huskies’ top scorer and best player.

With the way Raiders guards Kaleb Thornton and Joseph Yesufu can get

to the basket, with Tyler Cochran playing so well and with as deadly a shooter as 6-6 Nebraska recruit Nana Akenten is, Bolingbrook can win games in the half-court. Yet when the situation demands, the Raiders are especially effective trapping in their press and converting resulting turnovers into points.

At some point in the supersectional, expect to see it happen again.

Bolingbrook’s pressure will take over, and the Raiders will prevail, 70-64.

THE NOTEBOOK

The NCAA Tournament has a dash of local flavor as Bolingbrook graduate Ben Moore is a starting forward for SMU (29-4), which is the No. 6 seed in the East Region. The Mustangs open against the Providence/USC winner.

In addition, Vanderbilt will be Northwestern’s opening-round opponent. Former Joliet Township all-stater and Illinois standout Roger Powell Jr. is the Commodores’ associate head coach under Bryce Drew.

Former one-year Romeoville coach Brian James is a Northwestern assistant under Chris Collins, whom he coached as an all-state player at Glenbrook North. James drew up the last-second, full-court pass play that beat Michigan and probably clinched Northwestern’s first foray into the NCAA tourney.

sophomore guard Prentiss Nixon, did all that he could, but Colorado State fell short in Mountain West championship game, losing to Nevada, 79-71.

Nixon, who led Bolingbrook to third place in the Class 4A state tournament two years ago, hit 8 of 17 shots, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, and scored 23 points.

• Illinois State was hoping to land an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament but instead received a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Redbirds’ associate head coach is Luke Yaklich, former coach of Joliet Township and Joliet West.

• Lincoln-Way East junior defensive end Devin O’Rourke has announced he will play his college football for coach Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Plainfield North senior running back Tyler Hoosman, a key in the Tigers’ runnerup finish in Class 7A last fall, has committed to Northern Iowa.

• Receiver Billy Reed (Lockport, Southern Illinois), linebacker BJ Bello (Lincoln-Way West, Illinois State), safety Jarrett Lecas (Lincoln-Way East, Benedictine) and quarterback Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook, Iowa State) are among those who will be out to impress NFL scouts in advance of the draft at Tuesday’s Pro Day at Northwestern.

“But it was still a special moment for St. Francis to reach the final four [of the tournament].”

After back-to-back conference championships, a pair of NAIA National Tournament appearances and a 62-7 record over the two-year stretch, Quigley Smith is excited about the future of the program.

Krzyzewski remains his North Star, so much so that Collins joked he should wear a bracelet with the letters “WWCKD” – What Would Coach K Do? – and check it before making big decisions.

But for all the lessons and tricks he’s learned from his mentor, Collins is very much his own man.

He recalled going into recruits’ homes with “nothing tangible” like a storied past to sell and a pitch that began, “I can’t show you any banners. ...”

What he sold them on, though, was himself and the promise that together they could build something different.

In a nice bit of serendipity, Vic Law, the first kid who committed to Collins’ first recruiting class, was alongside the coach to watch it unfold.

“I’m used to being part of all the ‘firsts’ here,” he said laughing.

Yet all around him, there was mounting evidence that Northwestern, at long last, was finally beginning to take sports seriously.

A new, gleaming, $270 million, 500,000-square-foot athletic facility is being readied along the lakefront on this posh suburban Chicago campus.

And Welsh-Ryan Arena, where the Wildcats have played basketball since 1952, is about to begin a $110

The comparisons with the Cubs need to stop now.

Northwestern finally crashing the Big Dance is a great story on its own, maybe even the best one going as this college basketball season races helter-skelter toward the finish line. And like the Cubs, the Wildcats call Chicago home and will arrive for the playoffs with tabletop-sized chips on their shoulders and decades of crummy baggage in tow.

But seriously ...

The Chicago team that won baseball’s World Series last fall and broke a century-and-counting championship drought already was a powerhouse and the heavy favorite. The program that bills itself as “Chicago’s Big Ten team,” which has been playing basketball since 1904, couldn’t be much more of an underdog.

The Cubs are packed with MVP-caliber sluggers and Cy Young award winners and backed up by the best manager and front office in the game. They’d been serious contenders to win it all just the year before.

So when they finally did, it was less a miracle than a matter of time.

The landscape looks a lot more daunting for a Northwestern.

They’re headed to the West Region as a No. 8 seed to play No. 9 Vanderbilt with a young coach and no proven stars. Small wonder Northwestern vice president Jim Phillips immediately dubbed the Wildcats’ debut as the “Braniac Game.”

“We should match ACT and SAT scores at halftime,” Phillips joked, “and give whoever’s ahead an extra point in the game.”

Truth be told, if this was “College Bowl” instead of college basketball, the Wildcats alumni and fans would rate their chances of success a lot higher.

But over the course of a Sunday afternoon, a few thousand of the faithful took up coach Chris Collins’ mantra – “Believe,” is what he’s told anyone who would listen since he arrived in 2013 – and threw themselves a purple-themed party.

“You don’t get many chances in life in anything to be a part of something historical, things that have never ever been done,” Collins said.

“So to be a part of this is something they can never take away from us.”

Collins’ fingerprints are all that

The upper-deck bleachers were torn out after the regular-season finale last weekend and the rest of the schedule is so tight that the university had to persuade the wrecking crews set to return Monday to leave the video boards in place for the watch party.

Whether Collins had anything so grand in mind when he arrived is unlikely. But what was important then, as well as now, is that he believed Northwestern basketball could be someday, and he got enough talented kids to buy in.

“He’s pretty good at that,” Law said chuckling. “He brought up the Cubs, a lot, too ... and that ‘Why Not Us? (rallying cry). He’s a big fan.”

But even Law had to acknowledge replicating that success, at least this season, is probably out of reach.

“On top of that,” he added with a smile, “I grew up on the South Side.

I’m a White Sox fan myself.”

Saladino can give the Sox little of everything

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Whether he’s a starter, roving jack of all trades or catching in an emergency, Tyler Saladino figures to give the White Sox a little bit of everything.

Some speed, solid infield defense and, as he showed Monday, occasional pop with the bat.

Saladino’s grand slam against right-hander Hector Carrasco was his third homer of the spring, no great surprise considering he popped eight out of the yard in 319 plate appearances last season, when Saladino ranked sixth among Sox position players in wins above replacement (1.8).

With top prospect Yoan Moncada destined to be the everyday second baseman at some point this season, Saladino can hold the position down while Moncada gets more needed Triple-A at-bats. If and when Moncada arrives, Saladino can play third, short and first base. He also has played in the outfield.

Saladino might want to save some

hits for the regular season. He also doubled and singled Monday to raise his average to .480.

Saladino hit to a .282/.315/.409 slash line in 2016 with 38 RBIs and 11 stolen bases last season.

Tilson to start season on DL: Charlie Tilson’s followup MRI reconfirmed an original diagnosis of a stress reaction in his right foot, but the outfielder has inflammation, is in a walking boot and will start the season on the disabled

list.

The good news for Tilson is there is no stress fracture. But he’ll go without weight-bearing activity for at least three weeks and be re-evaluated.

Tilson, acquired from the Cardinals at last year’s trade deadline, tore his left hamstring in his first game, rehabbed the injury and came to camp as the top contender to start the season in center field.

Good, old No. 14: Maybe the Sox should have saved their 14-run ninth inning late Sunday for the day Paul Konerko visited camp last week, not that Konerko would have enjoyed it.

The late-night blitz, executed mainly by minor leaguers, erased a 3-1 deficit, but was no thing of beauty with four Dodgers errors, three walks and two hit batters included. The Sox did have seven hits, including two by outfielder Jason Bourgeois – one of them a three-run homer. They pushed nine runs across before making an out.

Renteria was pleased with many of the at-bats, but even he felt for the Dodgers, who were on the field for 40 minutes.

“I can imagine how they felt on the other side,” he said.

Schwarber might not look like the “prototypical” leadoff hitter, but the description and definition of a leadoff hitter have changed over the years. He is not a speed guy who will steal many bases, but the Cubs like his ability to see pitches and get on base at his career clip of .353.

“I don’t want him to change anything,” Maddon said. “His DNA is to see pitches, accept walks, work good at-bats.”

Maddon further explained the rationale for batting a player such as Schwarber first.

“It’s always about getting your better hitters to hit more often, and they have a tendency to get on base,” he said. “And when you get to the fourhole and it is Zobrist, it just make sense based on left-right-left-switch (hitter) and go back to back to left if you want or right. Part of it is just the balance of the whole thing. When people say cleanup hitter or third hitter, everybody’s applying conventional means from several years ago. My thinking is we’re saying better hitter, getting on base and then who can actually protect Rizzo.”

When Schwarber returned last fall,

he went 7 for 17 in the World Series with a double, two RBIs and three walks. He will continue to wear the knee brace for the foreseeable future.

But he said there was no mental hurdle coming back.

“I don’t think there was really a psychological hurdle,” he said. “I wanted to be 100 percent as soon as I came in. These last couple months of being out here and doing my work have been good.”

Schwarber might catch on occasion, and he might be taken out of left field late in games for a defensive replacement. Beyond that, Maddon said he is mindful of all that Schwarber went through during his rehab.

“Pretty significant injury he came off,” the manager said. “We all know what he did in the World Series last year. People are going to look at that and base their entire Schwarber world around that last two games. But he’s still coming off a really significant injury, and we have to be very careful with that.

“I would like to see him play an entire season. It would be kind of nice to get a full season of Kyle Schwarber, major league baseball. So that’s the most important thing to get out of this.”

Memo to those who want to underestimate Kyle Schwarber: Do so at your own risk.

That should have been apparent last fall when Schwarber came back from major early season knee injury and willed his way into the lineup in time for the World Series, beating even the Cubs’ own projections for his return.

Schwarber continued working in the offseason, and he arrived at spring training saying he was 100 percent and ready to go.

The 24-year-old has taken up any challenge thrown at him during his brief career after the Cubs took him in the first round of the 2014 draft.

Doubters have scoffed at Schwarber’s viability as a catcher, his preferred position. Last year’s knee injury and the fact that the Cubs have a pair of bona fide backstops will limit Schwarber’s time behind the plate.

So out to left field Schwarber will go again. The 6-foot, 235-pounder might be limited in left, but he continues to work in the outfield, and manager Joe Maddon has steadfastly maintained

that Schwarber is better than advertised with the outfield glove.

Schwarber has acquitted himself well enough in the Cactus League so far, both in the field and at the plate, where he was 6 for 22 with two triples and a home run through Sunday.

What the Cubs really want to see is a full year of Schwarber and his offensive potential.

He played in only two regular-season games last year because of the knee injury he suffered in the second series of the season. That injury came as the result of a collision in the outfield.

In only 69 games in 2015, Schwarber put up a line of .246/.355/.487 with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs. For his postseason career, he has a line of .364/.451/.727 for an OPS of 1.178 with 32 total bases, five home runs and 10 RBIs. This year, Schwarber will take up a new challenge as he likely will be the Cubs’ primary leadoff hitter.

“It’s another spot in the lineup,” he said early in camp. “I think it would be a cool spot. You’ve got some guys behind you in Kris (Bryant) and Riz (Anthony Rizzo) and (Ben) Zobrist and all those other guys. If I’m there, I’m

Rondo provides spark as starter, Bulls top Hornets

The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nikola Mirotic scored 24 points, Rajon Rondo had a season-high 20 in his return to the starting lineup and the Bulls beat the Charlotte Hornets, 115-109, on Monday night to snap a season-high, five-game losing streak.

Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler each had 23 points for the Bulls (32-35), who got a needed win to boost their hopes of earning the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Mirotic, who didn’t play in the Bulls loss to Boston on Sunday, had five 3-pointers, while Rondo provided the spark for the Bulls in his first start since Dec. 30. Along with hitting a season-high three 3-pointers, he had six assists and seven rebounds.

Jeremy Lamb scored 26 points filling in for Nic Batum (migraine), while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 22 and Kemba Walker 21 for the struggling Hornets. Marvin Williams had 13 points and tied a career high with 18 rebounds.

Looking to provide an early spark

to his struggling offense, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg went with Rondo over Jerian Grant as the starting point guard.

The move couldn’t have worked better, as the Bulls scored 36 points in the first quarter – two shy of their season high – after knocking down 8 of 13 3-pointers.

Rondo had three of those 3-pointers and added three assists as the Bulls built a 12-point, first-quarter lead.

The Hornets battled back from 16 points down to tie the game in the third quarter at 69 but could never take the lead. Every time Charlotte got close, Mirotic seemed to come up with a big basket.

Notes: The Bulls made 11 of their first 19 3-pointers, but cooled off significantly after the middle of the second quarter, finishing 14 of 40 from beyond the arc. ... Outscored the Hornets 18-2 on fast-break points. ... Wade, Rondo and Butler were all 8 of 15 from the field.

MORE THAN A FILLING

Dr. Keith Jaeschke looks back on 30-plus years of dentistry

MORRIS – Morris dentist Dr. Keith Jaeschke retired Feb. 10, although he still occasionally helps out at Matthew P. Bell and Associates General Dentistry, where he practiced.

During those four decades, Jaeschke saw dentistry evolve. He recently discussed some of those changes and how they affect people today.

HIV and hepatitis C

Jaeschke said in those early days, dentists practiced “wet-fingered,” meaning no gloves and no masks.

“It was 1978 and AIDS had not become a concern in dentistry,” Jaeschke said. “We were not, at that point, using gloves, and, of course, AIDS changed that situation. But you had a much bigger chance of having hepatitis being transmitted during medical or dental procedures or oral surgery, and you had more documented cases of it being transmitted.”

Still, hepatitis C didn’t carry the same concern or the same emotional impact AIDS did, even though hepatitis “is much more virulent than the AIDS virus.” And then, of course, AIDS at the time meant death, he added, while hepatitis did not, even though some people did die from it. “[Hepatitis] was certainly not identified in dental school as, ‘This is huge, this is major, and you have to be concerned,’” Jaeschke said. “It was just a part of being a health care professional. You had a chance of coming in contact with it; you had a chance of getting it.”

Sterilization

Although dentists were thorough in their sterilization techniques 35 years ago, the techniques themselves have improved, Jaeschke said.

Thirty-five years ago, dentists sterilized their instruments by immersing them in certain chemicals, Jaeschke said. Today, many dentists sterilize by autoclaving: high heat and pressurized steam, more than 212 degrees, he said.

While chemical sterilization did the job, “the autoclave sterilization is far superior,” Jaeschke said.

Fillings: White and silver

White fillings existed in 1978 but were generally reserved for front teeth, Jaeschke said. Not only was

Dr. Keith Jaeschke retired in February after nearly 40 years of dentistry. insurance less likely to pay for them, the materials weren’t strong enough to hold up on the back teeth, he added.

“The white fillings have reached the point where they’re so strong and durable, they look 10 times better than the mercury fillings,” Jaeschke said.

“This has been the biggest reason to see silver fillings falling out of favor.”

He debunked the myth that mercury fillings are poisonous to people and said the real concern lies in removing the filling and then disposing of it. The truth is, mercury as a filling revolutionized dentistry.

“We could fix teeth with it and it would last,” Jaeschke said.

Implants and crowns

Implants as used today weren’t “on the horizon 30 years ago,” Jaeschke said. These, too, have dramatically changed dental care for patients, making them “the closest we can come to giving you back your own teeth.”

Their quality has improved, too.

“They hold better, they feel better,

and you can chew better with them,” Jaeschke said.

Ditto for the materials used to create crowns and bridges. For many years porcelain was the “gold standard,” but it tended to chip or crack. Zirconium is much stronger, Jaeschke said.

Education and awareness

People today know the importance of dental health, Jaeschke said.

They’re brushing and flossing on a regular basis, they understand the sugar to cavity connection, and they’re receiving regular checkups.

“People also have more disposable income where they can say, ‘I want to keep my teeth,’” Jaeschke said. “Thirty, 40 years ago, people assumed dentures were the natural course to go. I think it’s a change in perception that teeth are important, you don’t have to lose your teeth, we can keep teeth for a lifetime.”

don’t have many teeth, if any, the halfyear mark is a good time for a first dental visit.

Dentists can gauge overall development, as well as any abnormalities, of the bones, tongue and mouth, Jaeschke said.

Also, if baby teeth start breaking down, they could affect, in a minor way, the health and position of the permanent teeth, he added.

Regular dental cleaning is important for both children and adults to remove plaque, which gradually builds up on teeth into tartar, he said. Even “brushing and flossing five times a day” won’t remove it.

Oral health and overall health

Who’d have thought a refreshing slice of lemon in a glass of water can hurt one’s teeth? Occasionally no, but if it’s a longstanding habit, the citric acid in the lemon can erode tooth enamel, Jaeschke said.

Garg said the longer dental care is delayed, the more problems a child may have. This can lead to an extreme fear of dentists that lasts a long time.

Conversely, the inflammation caused by periodontal disease can contribute to heart disease, Jaeschke said.

“The health of your mouth is definitely a gateway to the rest of your body,” Jaeschke said.

Periodontal disease

It’s still a huge problem, Jaeschke said, and it’s more than tooth loss.

Periodontal disease also affects the tissues and the underlying bone that support the teeth. Periodontal disease can even affect people who don’t get cavities.

“People will say, ‘I had perfect teeth, no cavities, and they all fell out,’” Jaeschke said. “The bacteria that causes cavities is different from the bacteria that causes periodontal disease.”

The cons are missing patients who have become like family, especially those who remained patients for 38 years, Jaeschke said.

From time to time over the years, Jaeschke used his skills simply to help patients in need and would then “forget to send them a bill.” But he wasn’t alone in generosity.

He recalled a family who recently offered to pay for dentures for a woman who, one by one, had lost her teeth and had forgotten how to smile. When she received her dentures, she nearly cried, Jaeschke said.

But he felt most gratified when she returned the next day.

“She told me, ‘My mouth is so sore from smiling. I think I smiled in my sleep,’” Jaeschke said. “That made my day.”

MANHATTAN – Dr. Laura Aversano, owner of Manhattan Dental Care, believes in supporting her community.

Manhattan Dental Care recently donated $1,500 to St. Joseph’s Catholic School Las Vegas Night fundraiser. That donation covered all of the food for the evening, one of the school’s biggest fundraising events. It also is one of the sponsors for the upcoming Manhattan Irish.

The dental office also supported the local Girl Scout’s troop in its recent cookie drive.

They purchased over $400 in cookies from Manhattan Dental Care patients. The cookies are being donated to the Manhattan Food Pantry.

For the past several years, Manhattan Dental Care has hosted a Halloween candy buyback event. Children bring in their candy and receive $1 a pound of candy donated. The candy is then given to Operation Care Package.

The event has grown every year with hundreds of pounds of candy being collected. This year more than 1,000 pounds of candy was collected.

Why does this all matter?

Chronically high blood sugar levels have been tied to a wide range of health problems, including the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, nerve damage, cataracts and kidney disease. By learning the GI values of the foods that you eat, you can take control of your diet. You can add foods low on the GI scale that will steady your blood sugar, and eliminate – or at least limit – the foods that make your blood sugar jump.

It’s important to note that a balanced and healthful diet will be made up of foods from all parts of the GI spectrum.

There are several nutritious foods with a high GI value, such as sweet potatoes, which have a GI of 70. Meanwhile, foods with little nutritional value, such as milk chocolate, will rank lower on the GI scale, at about 40.

Foods high in carbohydrates are essential to a healthy diet, but quality matters.

Stick with fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains, legumes and beans. Steer clear of processed foods, which are usually high in refined carbohydrates like white sugar or white flour. And before you make a radical change to the way you eat, be sure to check with your physician.

Dear Doctor: I’ve been reading that choosing foods that are low on the glycemic index is better for your health. What is the glycemic index and why should I pay attention to it?

Dear Reader: The glycemic index, also referred to as the GI, is a system that rates foods based on how quickly the glucose contained within them is absorbed into the bloodstream. Developed to help people living with diabetes to maintain steady blood glucose levels, the GI has become a useful tool for anyone who wants to avoid blood sugar spikes.

The food we eat is broken up into three main categories – protein, fat and carbohydrates. Of the three, carbohydrates are our main source of energy. The body turns carbohydrates into glucose, a type of sugar, which powers bodily functions. It gives you energy for both mental (your brain is a heavy user of glucose) and physical activity.

However, not all carbohydrates behave the same way after they are ingested.

Some, like sweets, baked goods and some fruits and cereals, will cause a sharp rise in blood glucose levels. More complex carbohydrates, like beans or legumes and most vegetables, are digested and absorbed slowly due to their fiber content. When you eat foods that are low on the glycemic index, it leads to a gradual and controlled rise in blood sugar. Foods high on the glycemic index cause blood sugar levels to rise and fall quickly.

The GI is based on a scale of 0 to 100, with pure glucose assigned a value of 100.

The more rapidly that foods release their load of glucose into the bloodstream, the higher they rank on the scale. Candy and processed cereals have high glycemic index values. The lowest values are assigned to foods in which glucose is digested and

With only 11 high-card points, perhaps your first thought is that game is the limit. However, there is a good argument that if the singleton diamond is worthwhile, there could be a slam. North should transfer with two hearts, then jump to four diamonds. (Since a three-diamond rebid would be natural and game-forcing, four diamonds can be used as a splinter bid.)

South’s trumps are not great, but the rest of his hand is slam suitable. He could make a four-heart control-bid or use Roman Key Card Blackwood so that he can find out in particular about North’s spade honors.

How should South play in six spades after West leads the diamond queen?

Declarer can afford to lose only one major-suit trick. But he has two ways to play the trump suit. If he can afford one loser, he should start with the ace. But if he cannot afford a loser, he should finesse the queen. How does he know which way to turn?

South should take the heart finesse first. Here, it loses, so he finesses the spade queen and gets home ... unless West is very clever and ducks his heart king. Then declarer might go down. If he does, he should congratulate West on his excellent defense ... through gritted teeth, to be sure!
