Hawk Auto proceeds with plans for Subaru dealership relocation

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hawk Auto Group is proceeding with plans for a Subaru dealership on Route 59, although the company did not make a presentation to the City Council this week.

The presentation was suggested by the council’s Land Use and Legislative Committee, which declined to make a recommendation on the plan to move the dealership to the northwest corner of Route 59 and Theodore Street on the same side of the intersection as L.A. Fitness.

Community Development Director Kendall Jackson said it was decided that a presentation to the full council at this point in the project was not the best idea.

JOLIET – The Slammers are approaching the start of another baseball season with no sponsor to put a new name on the stadium.

Meanwhile, the city of Joliet, which owns the stadium, has begun making plans to spend $1.2 million on artificial turf as soon as the fall.

Artificial turf could come sooner than a new name for the stadium, which was Silver Cross Field until the naming rights contract expired at the end of 2016.

Team President Nick Semaca said Wednesday that a naming rights deal could occur at any time or not at all this baseball season.

“We could have something in a few weeks. We could get something in a few months,” Semaca said. “We could have nothing until the end of the year.”

The cost of the project, which would include changes in left field to create space so the stadium also could be used for soccer, is estimated at $1.2 million, Hock said.

Hock said he will propose using city reserve funds to pay for artificial turf and recoup the money over time from the newly expanded Special Service Area tax that was extended from downtown into surrounding areas, including the ballpark.

The expansion of the SSA tax is expected to add $230,000 to the $400,000 collected when it was applied only to downtown businesses.

The money historically has been used to promote business development in the taxing area. But early on, city officials said they intended to use at least part of the money to put artificial turf in Silver Cross Field.

“Silver Cross Field” still is on the sign at the stadium front gates, and Semaca said the team is not inclined to remove it until a new sponsor is signed.

In the meantime, he said, the team simply refers to the ballpark as Slammers Stadium.

Semaca said the Slammers are “ready to go the long haul” to get the right sponsor.

“It’s an important deal,” Semaca told the committee. “It’s something that hopefully could be long-term.”

Crane said he is considering the northeast corner among his options. He also has said he might need to look at Route 59 sites outside of Joliet if the city rejects his plan.

The northwest corner was proposed for a retail, restaurant and office center in 2005, and a planned unit development was created for that project. The city would have to approve a change in the planned unit development for Hawk Auto to relocate the Subaru dealership to that location.

The Lincoln-Way Education Association, the district’s teachers union, hosted a candidates forum Wednesday that covered many familiar issues, such as district

The district has been rocked by controversies since it was put on

the state’s financial watch list in spring 2015, and the board voted to close Lincoln-Way North High School as a result.

LWEA President Tim Conway said not many people attended to the previous candidates forums held by the teachers union.

“So I am really heartened we have such a great turnout this evening,” he said.

One question directed to board President Dee Molinare and board member Christopher Kosel was about the revelation of a 2014 memo from Superintendent Scott Tingley

that anticipated a deficit despite presenting a balanced budget.

Molinare and Kosel were asked why they didn’t bring the memo to the public’s attention.

“The actual memo that you’re talking about, I do not recall that one, because, obviously, we don’t have it here in front of us,” Kosel said.

He said the financial problems of the district have been “widely spoken about” and that they “have not been secrets.”

Joliet resident chosen for ring ceremony 20 Cubs fans picked to present World Series bling to various players

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Paul Morimoto was a resident from 1956 to 1959 at Cook County Hospital.

It was less than ideal pay, so to help bring in more money, he moonlighted in 1958 as a team physician for the Chicago Cubs. Ten years later, his son, David Morimoto, became a Cubs fan.

And just like dad, David entered the medical field. David is an ophthalmologist in Joliet.

In February, David’s staff submitted a montage video to the franchise of David’s fandom as part of the Cubs Championship Ring Bearer Contest, which gives die-hard fans the opportunity to present a World Series championship ring to a Cubs player at a pregame ceremony April 12.

David was one of 20 ring bearers chosen from more than 1,500 submissions.

One of the office receptionists saw a story about the contest, and it was her idea to submit a video of David. The staff was on board.

A surgical technician at the office who sings in her free time came up with the montage video to a Sir Mix-A-Lot song.

“She put the words to the tune on her lunch break,” David said.

Then, an optometrist synced it all together. They submitted it in February on Twitter.

The optometrist, Jeff Harris, was the only staff member with a Twitter account. But last week he hadn’t been on Twitter for a couple of days, so the Cubs had trouble contacting him.

“The Cubs organization called my office trying to track him down,” David said. “They got through to him last Tuesday, and I found out about it at the same time. It was so perfect.”

David went to Cubs games as a child with his parents. He was able to attend a World Series game with his parents, brother and nephews.

“I got my dad to one of the World Series games this past year, and he’s going to be my guest at the ring ceremony,” David said.

His favorite Cub of all time is Ernie Banks. David said he does not yet know who he’ll present a ring to, but he’s hoping for Javier Baez.

Although he was optimistic from the moment the Tribune Co. sold the team to the Ricketts family in 2009, and even moreso when they hired Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations in 2011, David said he never expected a World Series championship so soon.

“I thought it’d be a couple more years.

I really didn’t think it would happen, until the final out of Game 7,” David said.

The ring ceremony is scheduled for the second home game of the 2017 season.

It’s a Wednesday night game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who the Cubs defeated to get to the World Series.

Joliet, Will County announce downtown development deal

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet and Will County announced a land swap Wednesday that will make possible city plans to reconnect Chicago Street and create a downtown plaza.

The city already has begun planning and spending money for the downtown redevelopment project, confident that a deal with the county eventually would be reached.

But having it done is a benchmark moment that Mayor Bob O’Dekirk noted in a written statement in a news release announcing the agreement.

“Every downtown development plan the city has invested in indicates that reconnecting Chicago Street is key to revitalize downtown Joliet,” O’Dekirk said. “The city has talked about this for years but took no action to make it happen.”

The mayor said the agreement with the county means “reconnecting Chicago Street and building the city center square is no longer just an idea. It will be a reality.”

Planners see reopening Chicago Street as a potential boost to downtown business because it ties the main street downtown directly to Interstate 80.

The route has been blocked for decades at the Will County Courthouse by a parking lot.

The deal announced Wednesday gives the city land now occupied by a parking lot just east of the courthouse.

That land will be converted to road connecting to South Chicago Street, which

runs to Interstate 80.

In turn, the city will give the county a commuter parking lot next to the courthouse parking lot, which expands the number of parking spaces for the courthouse from 166 to more than 200.

In the release, Will County Executive Larry Walsh also praised the deal.

Noting that Joliet is the county seat, Walsh said, “I have always advocated to keep a strong county presence in the downtown city center, and I am very

happy after many years of negotiations we were able to reach a deal that works for all parties involved.”

The city also will be able to expand Van Buren Plaza, an area across from the Rialto Square Theatre that contains a fountain and is used as a public gathering space. The city gets the former Will County State’s Attorney’s Office building and parking lot next to the plaza.

The deal still must be approved by the City Council and County Board.

But City Council members have looked forward to completing the deal, and county leaders also appear to be on board.

In the news release, County Board Speaker Jim Moustis called the agreement a deal that “will benefit both Joliet and Will County residents.”

Joliet council member John Gerl, who have been the council’s liaison to the county, told The Herald-News that a number of county leaders and their staff were at the meeting when the agreement was reached.

“They felt comfortable that the County Board would be amenable to approving it,” Gerl said.

Former Joliet Junior College trustee dies

Klen was ‘passionate,’ ‘fun-loving’

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Former Joliet Junior College Trustee Susan Marie Klen, 53, has died.

Her husband, John Leeson, 53, said he came home from work and found her unresponsive Tuesday morning.

Family and friends are mourning the loss of Klen, who was active in the community and served on the JJC Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2015. Klen was seeking a two-year term on the Susan board in the upcoming Marie Klen April election.

“She did things for people that would benefit from her effort, her work, and was not ever, ever looking for any personal glory,” Leeson said.

Klen and Leeson were married for 13 years.

Some of the organizations Klen was involved in include the Joliet Township High School District 204 Foundation, the district’s alumni association and the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

She also was involved in the Zonta Club of Joliet and served as a Will County election judge, Leeson said.

JJC President Judy Mitchell said Klen was a “true passionate supporter” of the college. She said Klen’s loss is unfortunate, and JJC’s thoughts and prayers go to Leeson and Klen’s family. “[Klen] always had the best interest of students in mind and was truly concerned about the community we serve,” Mitchell said.

MINOOKA – Stepping in for Mayor Pat Brennan, who was out ill, Minooka Administrative Director Dan Duffy shared the village’s highlights of 2016 at the annual State of the Village address Wednesday in the village community room.

Duffy started off by saying that under Brennan’s leadership, with hardworking employees and trustees and new investments made in Minooka, “I can honestly say the state of the village is very strong.”

One of the biggest accomplishments in the past year was securing funds for the McEvilly Road Bike Path so work can begin this year on the project that’s been 10 years in the making. The village obtained an additional $800,000 in federal grant money in December with the help of the Will County Governmental League.

Assistance also came from Grundy and Will counties to push forward with the project.

An 85-room, extended-stay Marriott hotel was approved by the village for Minooka BBR developers, who also brought the Hampton Inn the previous year.

The new facility represents a $14 million investment in the village along with employment of local tradesmen and permanent jobs for residents.

The first phase of a 32-acre restricted development began with Heritage Woods of Minooka building an assisted-living facility, the first of its kind in Minooka.

The $18 million investment will produce 54 new jobs in the health care industry, Duffy said.

The Heritage Woods group has applied to the Illinois Department of Housing to build a memory-loss facility adjacent to the assisted-living facility.

PACCAR Inc. broke ground last spring on its site at the northwest corner of Interstate 80 and Ridge Road, which will be its Chicago-area resale site for fleet trucks.

JOLIET – Police reportedly seized nearly 2 pounds of marijuana and several stolen items while searching a house Tuesday.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Jaime A. Velez-Peak, 25, had been the subject of an investigation by the Joliet Narcotics Unit before a search warrant was issued for his residence in the 1000 block of Pearson Drive.

Narcotics, tactical and patrol officers went into the residence, which was unlocked, at 10:40 a.m., Gregory said.

Velez-Peak, a 23-year-old male relative and Deonta L. Johnson, 24, were present at the time.

“Officers found nearly 2 pounds of marijuana packaged for sale, and

drug equipment such as baggies and a digital scale,” Gregory said.

Police also seized nearly $5,000.

“They also took three television sets, several guitars, a set of Ping golf clubs and scuba diving equipment after all of it was determined to be stolen,” Gregory said.

Velez-Peak was charged with delivery of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of stolen property, and he was booked into the Will County jail.

His relative was released without being charged.

Johnson, of the 21800 block of West Knollwood Drive in Plainfield, also was booked into the county jail on outstanding warrants for charges of theft and driving with a suspended license, according to police reports.

Johnson also had an active warrant in Kane County.

Single-story Joliet Township home damaged in kitchen fire

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A house suffered severe damage after a kitchen fire early Wednesday.

East Joliet Fire Department Chief Robert Scholtes said crews were called about 2 a.m. when a single-story ranch house was reported ablaze in the 1500 block of Starr Drive in Joliet Township.

“The owner was home at the time,

but he and his cat were able to get out,” Scholtes said.

It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire.

Fire protection districts from Elwood, Manhattan and New Lenox, as well as the Rockdale Fire Department, assisted East Joliet at the scene.

“The cause will remain under investigation, but it appears right now to have started from a careless use of kitchen equipment,” Scholtes said.

JOLIET – A teen was arrested after police found two handguns Tuesday, one in a garage and one in the trunk of a parked car.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said police were called at 4:13 p.m. after residents of the 600 block of Morgan Street reported men walking down the street while carrying handguns.

“Officers located the subjects standing near a garage in the alley between the 300 blocks of Willow and Hunter avenues. One of them started to run

when officers approached, but was detained,” Gregory said.

Gregory said the garage the men had been standing by was on vacant property, but a car was parked inside.

A .380 semiautomatic was found in the garage where the group had been standing, Gregory said.

“Also a .45-caliber Glock was found in the trunk of the vehicle in the garage, and a 17-year-old boy was charged with unlawful use of a weapon as a result,” he said.

The teen was booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center. The other men were released without being charged.

“Had I known some of what I know now … things would’ve been different,” she said.

“You stated you are a voice of dissension. Where did my money go?” the speaker asked.

Kosel said he was standing up and speaking but he was one voice among seven.

When asked about cutting electives, none of the candidates said they

were interested in it. Talley, Yiakos and Yomtoob said they were interested in increasing the number of electives.

A question for board members Joseph Kirkeeng and Joseph Kosteck asked their position on freezing teachers pay as the district deals with financial difficulties.

Kirkeeng said education is the district’s industry and he is not interested in pay freezes.

Kosteck also said he was not for pay freezes.

Des Plaines Street south of Lockport Street will be closed starting at 1 p.m.

Saturday. Starting at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, crowd barriers and traffic barricades will be positioned along Lockport, James, Illinois and Commercial streets. Vehicles that remain within the parade route will be towed at the owners’ expense after 11 a.m.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, police will close parts of James, Lockport, Illinois, Commercial, Chicago, Ottawa, Des Plaines and Fox River streets. All streets will reopen as soon as the parade has cleared, which is expected to be about 2:30 p.m., except part of Des Plaines Street, which will remain closed until about 6 p.m.

Of those permits, three were granted for church projects, including the new Village Christian Church on Bell Road, the expansion of Minooka Bible Church and the new parish center for St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

On the financial side, the village saved $353,150 by refunding 2008 series bonds during 2016.

As of the end of fiscal 2016, Minooka had about seven months of reserves on hand, which is above auditor standards, giving the village a strong bond rating of AA-.

Duffy highlighted accomplishments of the police department, including fundraising events for Special Olympics and food drive collections for local pantries, as well as public education and crime prevention instruction for the entire community, from students to seniors.

He also recognized several police officers for life-saving incidents that didn’t make the headlines but he said deserved recognition.

While other communities were stagnant during the recession, Minooka was building homes, Duffy said. The village renegotiated annexation agreements with developers to spur economic growth and investment in the community.

Minooka encouraged new and existing businesses to invest with aggressive economic development packages, which brought in new commerce and industry.

“We aggressively recruited new sectors of our economy to help diversify and build our tax base,” Duffy said.

“All of this is not just rhetoric, not just promises, but actual results.”

Chicago looks to New York for policing ideas

CHICAGO – Even before President Donald Trump tweeted a threat to send “in the Feds” to curb Chicago’s gun violence, he was saying on the campaign trail that there was a simple solution to the bloodshed: police should get tougher. Chicago should follow the lead of New York City, Trump’s administration has said, and crack down on even the smallest offenses.

It turns out Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson visited the New York Police Department weeks before the Trump administration advice. But what he gleaned from a city that has achieved long term success in fighting crime was more nuanced than a Trump-inspired police crackdown.

Johnson came home with ideas aimed at increasing community trust by using technology to get Chicago police officers out of their squad cars, and putting new cadets in neighborhoods to walk the streets and talk to locals.

“We are only as strong as the faith the community has in us,” Johnson said.

Mumps outbreak declared at Barrington High School

BARRINGTON – Health officials have declared a mumps outbreak at a suburban Chicago high school after confirming a third case among its students.

The Lake County Health Department said it has nearly 20 suspected mumps cases at Barrington High School, along with an adult from Lake Zurich and a Libertyville High School student.

Those cases come as the U.S. is in the midst of one of the largest mumps surges in decades, with schools and college campuses in many states contending with outbreaks.

Prom dress rules lead to body shaming accusation

ROCKFORD – A Rockford high school is being accused of body shaming after releasing guidelines on how girls should dress for the prom.

Boylan Catholic High School in Rockford has issued a 21-page rule book – complete with pictures – on what is and isn’t acceptable at this year’s prom.

But the guidelines have ruffled feathers with a line that reads: “Some girls may wear the same dress but due to body types, one dress may be acceptable while the other is not.”

Body image and media expert Robyn Goodman of the University of Florida told the Rockford Register Star that line supports discrimination and body shaming because girls don’t have a choice on how their bodies are made.

Judge says comptroller may choose funds for workers

SPRINGFIELD – A judge has ruled that the Illinois state comptroller may direct which accounts should be used to pay state employees.

Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza reported late Tuesday that St. Clair County Circuit Judge Robert LeChien ruled against Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. She may decide how to pay 600 employees.

Rauner wanted the Department of Central Management Services workers paid from general revenue. But there’s a two-year budget stalemate and no appropriations for that fund.

Mendoza indicated they should be paid from the agency’s garage and maintenance funds. Mendoza said those funds have $93 million available.

Rauner’s office didn’t immediately comment Wednesday.

In one example of Chicago’s dilemma, the police department is struggling to draft a new policy on the use of force.

An October proposal prompted concern from the police union that the restrictions were so tight officers would put themselves in danger to comply. A new draft released Tuesday would give police more latitude in deciding when to fire their weapons, which pleased the police union but prompted concern from community activists about excessive force.

All this is a sharp contrast with New York, where the NYPD during the 1990s turned to the “broken windows” policing strategy of cracking down on minor offenses championed by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani. That policy helped drive the number of homicides down in one decade from more than 2,200 a year to fewer than 700.

Since then, the number of homicides in New York has continued to decline. In January the police department announced that there had been a near record low 335 homicide in 2016 – less than half the tally in Chicago, which has less than half the population. And New York has done this with a lighter policing touch.

Madigan pushes to banish child assault statutes

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, citing the actions of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, is pushing for the elimination of statutes of limitations on child abuse and assault crimes.

Madigan on Tuesday testified before the Senate Criminal Law Committee in support of Senate Bill 189, which the committee passed and sent on to the full Senate for consideration. She said children who suffer sexual assault and abuse often spend a lifetime recovering from the violations.

Madigan said Hastert inflicted “unbelievable pain” on the youth he molested at the school where he coached wrestling before entering politics. She added he only got a “slap on the wrist.”

The 75-year-old is serving a 15-month sentence in federal prison for violating banking laws as he sought to silence one of his victims with hush money.

WASHINGTON – Pivotal industry and consumer groups mounted intensifying opposition to the Republican health care bill as GOP leaders labored Wednesday to rally a divided party behind their high-stakes overhaul drive. Lawmakers cast Congress’ initial votes on the legislation as House Speaker Paul Ryan praised the proposal as “what good, conservative health care reform looks like.”

The American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association and AARP, the nation’s largest advocacy group for older people, were arrayed against the GOP measure. Seven years ago their backing was instrumental in enacting President Barack Obama’s health care statute, which President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are intent on erasing.

Education shouldn’t be determined by zip code SPRINGFIELD – The subject of school choice has come to the forefront in recent weeks with the appointment of Betsy DeVos as the U.S. education secretary.

When folks debate the merits of school choice, I can’t help but smile.

The fact of the matter is we already have school choice in America.

Bureaucrats sit in school administration buildings and draw lines on maps to determine where your child will go to school in a particular school district. They choose.

You don’t.

And school district boundaries drawn before students – and most of their teachers – were born, play an even bigger role in determining what services will be available for students.

The caliber of education a child receives should not be determined by a family’s zip code.

For example, the rural school district I live in near Springfield has a limited curriculum. My neighbors tell me youngsters wanting to get into competitive math and science curriculums at top universities are often left disappointed.

Fortunately, my family can afford to send our daughters to a Catholic school in Springfield that offers a more demanding curriculum.

But many folks, whether they live in inner cities or rural areas, just don’t have that option. They lack the money to choose, so their kids are just stuck.

Don’t get me wrong, Illinois has some excellent public schools. I attended public schools and universities from kindergarten through graduate school. For the most part, my experiences were good.

But like most students, I had some excellent teachers and I had some weaker ones.

VIEWS Scott Reeder DeVos has advocated for voucher programs where money follows the student.

In other words, vouchers could be issued to parents and they could choose where their youngsters learn. They could choose between private, religious, public, online, charter or home-schooling options.

It seems a fair solution.

I’ve yet to meet a parent who wants to see their child fail.

But teachers unions oppose this idea. They fear it will result in less money going to public schools. That could happen, but only if public schools fail to compete.

Most folks are quite happy with the public schools their children are attending.

But not all are.

For example, a 2004 Fordham Institute study found that 39 percent of Chicago Public Schools teachers send their own children to private schools. That’s compared with a national average of 12 percent of all children who are educated privately.

Think about that.

Four out of 10 Chicago teachers are willing to pay money to keep their kids from attending the schools where they teach.

That speaks volumes.

Those teachers have school choice because they can afford it.

Why shouldn’t all families be afforded the same opportunity?

To the Editor: The Supreme Court Roe v.

Wade abortion ruling was based on shaky legal reasoning and faulty information.

They finessed it by tying it to a manufactured, non-stated “right to privacy.”

Jane Roe was Norma McCorvey, who later stated her attorneys persuaded her to lie, saying she had been raped. Abortionist Bernard Nathanson admitted he and others falsified statistics on the number of illegal abortions and maternal deaths to convince the court legalizing abortion would make it safer.

The court allowed abortion, based on not knowing when life begins, and said if personhood for the unborn is established, the case collapses. We now know from science that life begins at conception and the baby is a unique person with DNA different than the mother’s.

The ultrasound proves the baby is always fully human and feels pain at Week 20.

The Fifth Commandment says you shall not murder.

The baby is innocent and is not getting due process; therefore, abortion is murder.

The court ruling should be overturned.

Planned Parenthood (PP) receives $528 million annually of taxpayer money, but does not deserve taxpayer charity, as it is profitable with $1.4 billion in net assets and donated $30 million in the 2016 election campaign.

Furthermore, the House Select Panel on Infant Lives issued criminal and regulatory referrals for profiting from selling aborted baby tissue. Using my tax money to fund murder, increase PP profit, and donations to politicians I disagree with is outrageously wrong.

PP performs 30.6 percent of all abortions in America, but no mammograms, and only 0.97 percent of Pap tests and 1.8 percent of breast exams. There are 20 federally qualified health centers for every PP facility. Funding for women’s health care should be transferred from PP to

legitimate providers.

To the Editor: Here are some Illinois projects for President Donald Trump to consider. High-speed rail from the Loop to O’Hare, Rockford, Joliet, IL River State Parks, Quad Cities, Iowa City, Des Moines, Omaha, Detroit, Toronto and St. Louis. More lanes on our expressways, repair bridges, water mains, link our airports with high-speed rail and trim the defense budget.

There’s no need to invade Russia or China – too bloody and messy and leads to nuclear war. Want to punish China and Russia? Use sanctions, embargoes and a blockade with a strong Navy.

Twenty-five hundred F-35s isn’t going to do it for us, the most expensive weapons program ever. What are these people thinking? Sincerely, Thomas Cechner

Bell shakes off injury, sinks late bucket to lift West past Central

cherron@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – For much of Wednesday’s Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional semifinal, Trevian Bell had to watch helplessly what was happening on the court.

Sidelined with an ankle injury late in the opening quarter, the Joliet West senior forward spent most of the next two quarters either in the locker room or on the bench as his team took on rival Joliet Central.

While things looked good for the Tigers as they built a 12-point lead with 6:23 left and Bell back on the floor, the Steelmen were far from out of it.

In fact, they rallied to take their first lead with 1:38 remaining and moved in front again at 62-60 with 32 seconds left.

After Teyvion Kirk tied the score at 62-all with two free throws with 28 seconds left, Central turned the ball over 13 seconds later and the Tigers looked for the winner, that’s when Bell got his big chance, and he made the most of it.

Elijah Ward missed a late attempt and Bell was there for the rebound bucket with 3.6 seconds left, just his second field goal of the game, to put West back in front.

Central’s Jose Grubbs tried to take a desperation try for the game-winner but couldn’t get off a shot as the Tigers hung on for a 64-62 victory before a standing-room only crowd of 2,400.

West (26-3) claimed its fifth straight win over Central (23-6) to advance to its second straight sectional final, having also advanced to that game a year ago with a win over the Steelmen. The Tigers meet Bolingbrook (27-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in the sectional title game.

“There’s nothing worse in a game like this to just watch since you want to be a part of it,” Bell said. “So I just had to fight through it. I listened to the trainer and he told me what was best for me. And I came in and just had to do my part. I was limited since my defensive slides were a little slower and I couldn’t jump as high as I wanted to, but there’s no room for excuses at this point of the season, so it was just something that I had to play through.”

The Tigers took a 52-40 lead early in the final quarter on a layup by Tabyous Casterberry, but JoJo McNair (12 points) made four free throws and then a layup with 5:07 to go to pull the Steelmen to within 52-46.

West’s lead moved back to 57-49 when Michael Smith (14 points) hit a 3-pointer with 3:33 left, but the Steelmen responded with a trey from Jason Bingham (12 points), a rebound bucket and a layup from Marcellus Hornsby (10 points) before Cameron Blackmon hit a free throw to tie it at 57-57 with 2:05 remaining.

Blackmon’s 3 pointer with 1:38 to go put Central ahead for the first time at 60-57, Casterberry got a rebound bucket and Kirk (17 points) hit a free throw with 1:04 left to again tie things.

Hornsby made a layup with 32 seconds left to put Central back in front, but Kirk hit two more free throws four seconds later to force another tie.

“I am so proud of the way that the kids battled back,” Central coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said. “When it was 50-38, I thought we were finished, but the kids just would not quit. JoJo would not let us lose, Marcellus had a huge fourth quarter, and Jose had his

usual outstanding game.”

The Tigers jumped out to an early 15-6 lead and still were up 17-10 after the first eight minutes, but there was trouble on the horizon because Kirk already had two fouls and Bell had left the contest becuse of his injury.

But with Eddie Creal (14 points) supplying six points in each quarter and Smith adding seven points off the bench in the opening half, the Tigers not only never trailed in the second quarter but were able to build a 34-27 halftime lead. That was huge becuase Bell, Kirk and Casterberry were all watching from the bench as the first half wound down.

“We knew that it was going to be a close game,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “But I didn’t want it to be that close since I lost about 5 pounds sweating. It’s fun when you play your crosstown rival in the state tournament. On Friday, we’ll see a different game and West team.

“Sophomore Kevon Dorris and junior Derren Williams were fantastic off of the bench in the first half and Kevon playing great defense down the stretch, you can’t ask for more for a kid that didn’t have many minutes. So it was really nice to have them step in just to maintain some composure in such a big game.

With Grubbs scoring five of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter, the Steelmen pulled to within 4138 with 3:32 left following a slam by McNair. But Central didn’t score over the next 4:47 and didn’t make another field goal for the next 6:25 as West built a 12-point lead.

“It really hurts to lose again to the same team that ended our season last year,” Grubbs said. “The story of this game is about my teammates. It’s been such a pleasure to go to battle with such a great group of men. It’s not about me scoring points, it’s about all of us working together.”

FRANKFORT – The Joliet West boys basketball team finished the third quarter on a 9-0 run Wednesday night to build a 50-38 lead over Joliet Central in the semifinals of the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional.

If anyone in the sellout crowd of 2,400 had the impression the game was over, they have not been watching coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.’s Steelmen very closely all season.

With JoJo McNair and Marcellus Hornsby providing the impetus, and Jason Bingham and Cameron Blackmon providing a couple of well-timed 3-pointers, Central battled all the way back to lead 60-57 with 1:37 left.

Perhaps the ankle injuries suffered earlier in the game by West’s Trevian Bell and Tabyous Casterberry – especially the right ankle injury to Bell, who sat out about half the game – would prove too much for the Tigers to overcome.

Of course, if you felt that way, you haven’t noticed what West is all about. Coach Nick DiForti’s Tigers are so quick with their hands and feet that opponents have a miserable time if they ever attempt to run clock.

When the Tigers need to create turnovers, they find a way.

And sure enough, in one of the wildest finishes imaginable, West celebrated a 64-62 victory on the strength of a Bell putback with 3.6 seconds remaining.

The atmosphere was as good as we have seen in this area for years. The game lived up to the hype.

“There’s not enough I can say about that team,” Bell said of Central. “They play through everything.

They’re a great team.”

West standout guard Teyvion Kirk, who played with foul trouble much of the night but still scored 17 points, said the Steelmen “played their tails off. They may not be the most talented kids, but they play hard.”

On top of that, Thompson was the sophomore coach and helped with the varsity last season at West.

“With coach Thompson there, we know him pretty well, and we knew he would come up with something for this game,” Kirk said.

DiForti estimated that he sweat off five pounds.

“We knew when we had the 12-point lead that it wasn’t going to be a blowout, not that I wanted it to wind up that close,” DiForti said.

The Tigers will take on No. 1 seed Bolingbrook at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional title and a berth in the supersectional next Tuesday at Northern Illinois University.

So many players on both sides stepped up Wednesday, making sure the event matched the billing.

For Central, there was Jose Grubbs, McNair and Bingham, along with Hornsby and Saunders off the bench.

For West, guard Mike Smith, a super sub all season, played more minutes than usual because of the injuries to Casterberry and Bell and contributed in multiple facets, including playing excellent defense. Eddie Creal was a man. And how about Kevon Dorris and Derren Williams off the West bench. All of them made huge contributions.

“I told Jose Grubbs after the game that no matter, everybody in this area, in our conference, would want you on their team,” DiForti said.

“He’s going to play college basketball somewhere.”

McNair, meanwhile, got the Steelmen back in the game when he scored 10 straight points, the last eight in an 8-2 run that chopped West’s lead to 52-46 with 5:07 left.

“We just never quit,” McNair said.

“When we were down 50-38, coach

told us not to give up. I had to do whatever I could in the fourth quarter to help us try to get the win.”

Central continued to battle down the stretch, a surprise to nobody. And West took a few shots perhaps more quickly than they would have liked.

Somehow, some way, this one was going to the wire.

“I expressed to our team when we were up 12 points that we needed to get the best shot we wanted, that we didn’t need to rush things,” Kirk said.

“But our guys were going for it and we took some quick shots. I took a couple myself. Hopefully, they would have fallen more than they did. But credit Bell, he made a big-time play that won it for us.”

Larry Thompson, what you and your Steelmen did all season was amazing.

Nick DiForti, your team lives to see another day. And I have a feeling you are correct, Friday night will be a “different game.” We all have to return to see that one.

USF women get historic win in 2 OTs SUBMITTED REPORT

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In a season filled with historic moments, the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team added to that resume Wednesday night when the Saints scored the program’s first NAIA Division II National Tournament victory.

It did not come easy, however, for the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, requiring two overtimes before the Saints prevailed, 87-83, over California-Merced.

The victory came in the program’s fourth appearance and second in as many years at the championship site.

“We sure did [make history],” said a relieved USF coach Samantha Quigley Smith, whose No. 6-ranked team was upset by Asbury (Kentucky), 63-60, in the first round one year ago.

“Thank God for that.”

The Saints (32-1) also had Charnelle Reed, emergency starter Kaitlin Aylward and a bench crew led by Ivana Markovic to thank for USF advancing to Friday’s second-round game against Tabor (Kansas), a 67-58 upset winner over Indiana Tech on Wednesday.

Tipoff is scheduled for noon Friday.

Reed tied a career high with her 34 points, 16 in the first half and a bevy down the stretch in the fourth quarter and in the two overtimes after being held to two points in the third quarter.

“Our offense runs well when Char-

nelle is doing things both inside and outside,” Quigley Smith said. “She is a multi-dimensional player and in our minds an All-American.”

An NAIA second-team All-America selection one year ago, Reed brought the Saints back from a pair of seven-point deficits – their largest of the game – in the closing eight minutes of regulation. Her free throw at 1:58 finally got USF back even at 65 before hitting clutch baskets in the closing 71 seconds to force the first extra period.

“I’m tired,” Reed said after converting 13 of 20 shots and 8 of 14 from the foul line. “That was too close for comfort, but the way you win games is buckling down the stretch, pushing when tired and gritting it out.

“That’s what we did tonight, relying on one through 18 (players on the team).

People stepped up.”

The first one to step up was the freshman Aylward. Playing in place of second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American and all-conference selection Jordan Giddings, who had to have emergency surgery on the way out to Sioux City, Aylward authored her fifth double-double of the season and just missed tying her season-high point total, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

“I knew I had to step up once I heard about Jordan,” said Aylward, who was making just her third collegiate start.

“I was a little bit nervous at the beginning of the game, but once the adren-

Jordan, all of whom fouled out in regulation. Coming into the game, USF as a team had only seven players foul out during the season.

“We were chasing Merced (17-12) much of the second half and needed to be aggressive and that led to the fouls,” Quigley Smith said. “But we received great contributions from the bench tonight starting with Aylward. She had a huge performance on the big stage tonight, and Ivana was amazing.”

Markovic led the bench brigade with a career-high 10 boards and just missed a double-double of her own, totaling nine points to go along with five assists and two steals.

“For her to get 10 rebounds, as a 5-7 point guard, to go in there and get that many rebounds was huge,” Quigley Smith said.

Markovic enabled the Saints to gain a 50-38 edge in the rebounding department. She also made three free throws down the stretch in the second overtime to seal the win.

“That was like 21/2 hours of basketball,” said a smiling Markovic. “That was crazy.

“The bench really contributed so much tonight. Each had a role to play and we filled those roles to the best of our abilities.”

That included Nichole Davidson, who also played big in the post in place of Giddings, contributing seven points and six rebounds.

Morris hangs tough early in sectional loss to Hillcrest

roesterle@shawmedia.com PLANO — The Morris boys basketball team knew that nearly everything was going to have to break its way Wednesday night if the Redskins were going to pull off the upset in the Class 3A Plano Sectional semifinals against Hillcrest, the sectional’s top-seeded team.

And, for a little while, a lot of things did go Morris’ way, enough so that the game was tied at 17 midway through the second quarter after leading scorer Matt Shaw scored his first basket of the game on a 3-pointer.

After that, though, it was all Hillcrest, as the Hawks outscored the Redskins, 16-4, in the remaining 5:28 of the first half to take a 33-21 lead at halftime en route to a 73-42 final that was nowhere near indicative of the effort put forth by a scrappy Morris team.

“I am definitely proud of our effort,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We knew we were going to have to shoot very well and rebound well if we were going to win tonight. I don’t know if we did either one of those things well enough tonight, but I do know we didn’t lose tonight due to lack of effort.”

Throughout the game, Hillcrest made a living at the free-throw line, as the Hawks finished 23 of 32 from the charity stripe, including 12 of 14 in the first half. By contrast, Morris made 2 of 2 free throws in the first half and finished 6 of 7.

Hillcrest jumped out to a 9-2 lead early, but Morris got eight points from JaQuan Boxley to pull to within 11-10 with 2:39 to play in the first quarter.

Boxley finished with 11 points. Hillcrest scored the final four points of the first quarter to take a 15-10 lead at the break.

Morris’ Tyler Spiezio scored the first four points of the second quarter to pull the Redskins to within 15-14.

Hillcrest’s Robert Harvey responded with a steal and a layup, but Shaw’s first 3-pointer of the game tied it with 5:28 to go until intermission. From there, the Hawks tightened up their defense and forced Morris into six turnovers en route to building the halftime lead.

“If we could have stayed within six points or so at halftime, it might have been a little different,” Blumberg said.

“Ending the first half the way they did took a little wind out of our sails after we worked so hard to tie it.

“They are very quick and they had a very aggressive mentality when it came to getting to the basket. They got to the line a lot and, to their credit, they knocked down their free throws.”

Shaw finished with a team-leading 17 points for Morris and scored nine in

the third quarter. Hillcrest’s Marcus Garrett was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points, and he went 11 of 14 from the free-throw line. Backcourt mate Jalen Hughes finished with 16 points.

“Things kind of snowballed on us in the second half,” Blumberg said. “[Point guard] Delaney Stutzki got in foul trouble and that made it tougher on us handling their pressure, although I felt Payton Voitik and Kameron Dransfeldt did a nice job off the bench.

“Hopefully, for the guys returning next year, when they go half-speed in a drill in practice, maybe they will ask themselves if that’s quick enough to get it done against a team like Hillcrest. We’ve seen what that speed is like, and these are the teams we are going to beat if we want to take that next step and win a sectional game.”

Magic come back, beat Bulls ORLANDO, Fla. – Elfrid Payton had 22 points, 14 assists and 14 rebounds for his second straight triple-double, and the Orlando Magic rallied for a 98-91 victory over the Bulls on Wednesday night.

Payton’s rebounds and assists were career highs, while Evan Fournier added 20 points to help Orlando erase a 13-point, second-half deficit and snap a two-game losing streak.

The fading Bulls have lost three straight and four of their last five games. They entered the night tied with Detroit for seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Jimmy Butler scored 21 points for the Bulls but missed some big shots down the stretch.

And look what happened by the end of the year, how well he was playing and how important he was for us to win the World Series. That’s what happened for me in my career. It was like, ‘You want at-bats, you’re going to have to move around.’ And I did. You do it out of necessity, and then you realize after the fact how valuable it makes you as an individual.”

Both players had productive seasons at the plate last year. The switch-hitting Zobrist put up a line of .272/.386/.446 with 18 home runs and 76 RBIs. His 10th-inning RBI double in Game 7 of the World Series scored the decisive run in giving the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908. Baez, who possesses prodigious power potential, produced a line of .273/.314/.423 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs. Equally impressive, his strikeout rate has gone from 41.5 percent in 2014 to 30 percent in 2015 to 24 percent last year. He still is susceptible to breaking balls out of the strike zone, but the Cubs are banking that his plate discipline will improve with time.

When Cubs manager Joe Maddon makes out his daily lineup card, he has these options at second base: n The reigning World Series MVP and starter in the All-Star Game, a veteran with back-to-back world championships to his credit. n The co-MVP of the National League Championship Series, a rising young star whose sleight-of-hand glove work has even veterans wondering, “How was that possible?”

Ben Zobrist is the veteran. Javier Baez is the upstart. They present Maddon with a nice problem, but they also present him with a challenge to find them enough playing time.

“I’m pretty sure we’re going to rotate a lot,” said Baez, who saw action at second base, first base, third base, shortstop and left field in 2016. “Wherever they put me, I’m just going to try to do my best.”

Maddon’s strength has been working all of his moving parts into the lineup, sometimes at multiple positions during any one game. He’ll have interesting options with the 35-year-old Zobrist and the 24-year-old Baez.

“We have to balance a lot of different things,” Maddon said. “[Baez] is going to play some second, of course, and so is Zo. Zo’s going to be out there primarily, and then we’ll work Javy in there, but Zo could also do what he’s done in the past: play some outfield.

“Javy was so significant to the conclusion of last season. He’s going to be very significant this year and years to come.”

Another of Maddon’s catchphrases is that baseball can have a cruel way of sorting out things. Injuries, a hot streak or a cold streak can force the issue one way or the other.

Both Baez and Zobrist have one thing in common: versatility.

According to FanGraphs, Baez had 16 defensive runs saved among all five positions he played last year.

Zobrist played in 119 games at second base, 27 in left field, 24 in right and one each at first base and shortstop. Most players would love to settle at one position, but Zobrist has carved out a long career by being willing and able to play multiple positions. Maddon even has advocated for an All-Star spot and Gold Glove award for “super-utility” players.

Konerko reminisces, voices support of rebuild

sgreenberg@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Paul Konerko turned 41 Monday. Two days later, he visited the White Sox spring training complex at Camelback Ranch and did what people of a certain age tend to do: talk about old times.

Poking around a team as young as these Sox might’ve had something to do with it, too, as the veteran of 16 seasons on the South Side recalled what it was like to form a young core with Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee and others after he arrived in 1999.

“That was a fun year,” he said. “We had guys who would go out together, guys would have dinner together, because you’re all just young. It was like a college team in a lot of ways, and that’s good.”

In case it matters to anyone, let it be known that a man whose No. 14 was retired by the team in 2015 is on board with the rebuilding plan that’s only just beginning to take shape here. The 2017 Sox don’t appear to be as far along as that 1999 team was – a division title came a year later – but these things aren’t always meant to go fast.

the young Sox to come together in the most authentic way possible – learning on the job side-by-side, the hard way – and form something lasting.

“As they keep getting better and better, there will be things pulling them away from keeping together,” Konerko said. “The money guys are making, guys getting married and having kids, all that kind of stuff. You start to spread out. Hopefully, the idea is you build that core and they show

up each day for each other because they’re built that way, and the wins are just a byproduct.”

Konerko is living the dad’s life these days, his three children skittering about. There’s getting ready for school, homework and whatever else guys forever stuck on 439 home runs do. He says he’s in the best shape of his life, lighter than he was as a player, and he looks it. Maybe the Sox could use him, but that’s not in the cards.

Reports: QB Hoyer to sign with 49ers

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Brian Hoyer will not return to the Bears in 2017. Instead, he will reunite with Kyle Shanahan and sign with the 49ers, NFL Network first reported.

According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, Hoyer will sign a multi-year deal with the QB-needy 49ers.

Last season, Hoyer stepped in for an injured Jay Cutler and started five games, completing 67 percent of his passes, while throwing six touchdowns and no interceptions. He broke his arm in the the Week 7 loss to the Packers.

The 31-year-old has spent time with the Patriots, Steelers, Cardinals, Browns and Texans since entering the league in 2009. When in Cleveland, Hoyer’s offensive coordinator in 2014 was Shanahan, the 49ers’ new head coach.

Hoyer will have a good shot to start in San Francisco. Blaine Gabbert will be a free agent and Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract.

Multiple reports indicate the Bears are the favorite to sign former Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon when free agency opens on Thursday.

On March 3, Sister Marie Schramko, Sister Mariarthur Hamann and Sister Mary Franz gathered in a parlor at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet, where all three live.

There, these sisters shared their paths to the convent, their lives of ministry and, in video, a message of spirituality for people today.

Schramko, the quietest of the three who said she served by actions, not words, said she found her calling while growing up in a mining town in Johnston, Pennsylvania.

“I had the sisters in the fourth grade and I loved the sisters,” Schramko said. “They were so kind.”

Like Schramko, Hamann knew from childhood that she wanted to serve God as a sister.

“On my First Communion day, I talked to God: ‘Don’t forget. I want to be a sister,’ ” Hamann said.

Hamann said she longed to attend a special high school for girls who wanted to be sisters. However, Hamann’s father, who was not Catholic, refused, adding that she must wait until age 18 to pursue her vocation.

“I remember one time I said, ‘But you married Mom when she was 17,’ ” Hamann said. “I thought he’d take the roof off. My mom told me then, ‘You’d better be quiet about that and just wait until you are 18.’ ” Hamann said a nun friend suggested the two of them pray a novena together. A novena is a series of special prayers recited for nine consecutive days and focused on a special intention.

So they did. Soon afterward, Hamann’s mother said the happy words: “Daddy said you can go to the convent.” Hamann was 15.

Franz’s road to the convent was more poignant. She was just 10 when her mother died from appendicitis.

She recalled how her mother had summoned all eight living children (two died in infancy) – ages 4 to 19 – to her bedside.

She remembered her mother’s final words to her: “Be a good girl, Mary.” She remembered the moment she realized her mother had died.

As was custom at the time, Franz’s mother’s wake was in the family home amid lily of the valleys a neighbor had brought. Franz felt thankful her father, somehow, kept the family together. One of Franz’s dearest memories is attending Mass with her father.

“I felt so proud to sit next to my father,” Franz said. “It made me feel so good.”

Growing up, Franz read about sisters who did missionary work. Franz wanted to be like them.

“I would think, ‘I would like to be helping people,’ ” Franz said. “When I asked my father, he said, ‘If this is what you want to do, you have my blessing.’ ”

SERVICE

Two particular teaching assignments stand out in Schramko’s memory. One was at Marybrook Academy in Ohio, which was for “girls that had run away from home.” Schramko said she worked there “for five years and five summers.”

The second was Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the school was literally built around them as they taught.

One construction worker quipped to Schramko how he brushed up on his algebra as he worked.

“There was nothing there,” Schramko said. “All we had was sand.”

At the school, Schramko said she taught the girls and a priest from Cuba taught the boys, in theory, anyway.

“I used to go over to the boys side and teach because they could not understand the priest,” Schramko said.

“I would teach Latin or whatever needed to be taught.”

Through the years, Schramko served as principal and then assistant

principal, her last role when she retired at age 98. She will be 101 in May. “I’d been so busy, I never noticed,” Schramko said.

Hamann, the first principal at St. Jude Catholic School in Joliet, spent many years on the administrative side in education. Like Schramko, she never noticed the passing years.

“I just kept on living and never thought about it until my body started falling apart,” Hamann said. “I began to think, ‘Gee, I’m getting close to 100.

Maybe that happens.’ ” The combination of Franz’s early experiences with the freedom post-Vatican II brought the Catholic church led her away from education and into pastoral care – working with the sick and dying.

“I visited people in nursing homes and at the time of death,” Franz said.

“I helped them prepare for funerals and visitations. I was at peace with God during that time, and I feel bad I can’t do it anymore.”

Know more Years ago, teaching was a primary ministry for many sisters, and Sister Marie Schramko, Sister Mariarthur Hamann and Sister Mary Franz were no exception. In fact, sisters often were moved to different schools every few years.

Hamann said congregations often made assignment decisions with the help of a large “checkerboard.” The board included the sisters’ names and the state, city and parish of possible locations.

In Hamann’s case, she was an organist as well as a teacher, so that made her skills doubly attractive on a parish level, she said.

“You might be in a place you loved very much, but we did what we were told, whether we liked it or not,” Hamann said.

“Somebody had to be moved, and so you had to be moved.”

Did their vocations bring them closer God? “I know that I’m a religious,” Schramko said.

“And I feel I should do what a religious is supposed to do. How much closer can you get than that?”

Hamann said the sisters’ lifestyle is designed to bring them close to God. “We gave up being married. We gave up having children. We gave up much of doing our own will,” Hamann said. “For many years, we lived by the vow of obedience. I think God blessed us because we were doing someone else’s will and we were doing it willingly.”

Franz said she met God every day.

“I see God in a child. I see God in a student. I see God in an older person,” Franz said. “And I try – I don’t say, ‘I do’ because sometimes that’s very difficult – I try to do what I can do each day and offer that day up to God.”

What can this type of legal document address?

Everything from a person’s wishes regarding resuscitation procedures, ventilation techniques and diagnostic tests, to life-prolonging treatments such as CPR, dialysis, blood transfusion, the administration of food, water or drugs, palliative care and surgery. Some people use their living wills to state their wishes regarding dying at home, donating their organs for transplantation or offering their bodies to science.

Individuals who decide to create a living will often begin by speaking with their families about the scope and specifics of the document they want to create. It’s also common to consult with your physician, who can help to explain the choices you have and the decisions you are making.

A living will must be in writing and adhere to the legal requirements of the state in which it is being used. A lawyer can help you to create your living will, but it is not a requirement. Both the American Bar Association and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization offer links to state-specific forms.

Dear Doctor: Our dad insists that he doesn’t want any heroic or extraordinary measures taken if he gets really sick, and he wants one of us children to relay this message to his medical team. Should he have a living will?

Dear Reader: We’re verging into legal territory with this question, but as medicine continues to advance in its ability to prolong life, this is an important topic for each of us.

A living will refers to a class of legal document that an individual uses to specify his or her wishes for end-of-life medical care. These documents are also referred to as health care advance directives, or simply advance directives.

The idea of a living will comes up most often among the elderly, but in fact, people of all ages can use this document to state what they do and do not want to be done in the instance of a medical emergency. If the time comes that a person is unable to make medical decisions on his own behalf, then the living will speaks for him.

While your dad is correct that you or your siblings can communicate his wishes to his care team, this can place a significant burden on the family. Despite knowing a loved one’s wishes, making decisions with life-or-death consequences is not only a challenge, but can also be emotionally wrenching.

A living will often includes a health care proxy or power of attorney. This allows you to name the person who will communicate your wishes if you should become unable to do so yourself. It’s understandably easy for family members to become overwhelmed in the midst of a medical crisis, and to agree to medical procedures or lifesaving measures that the patient would not have wanted.

am a father of two girls. Both of them no longer see, talk to or contact me. I’m divorced from their mother. She cheated on me after she went back to work and met a man she decided was her soul mate. That was 17 years ago. I haven’t talked to or seen my ex in all those years, and slowly both daughters distanced themselves from me until there was no relationship at all. Bridge players who do not understand their partner’s bids are in trouble. This week, we are looking at the splinter bid, which shows a good fit for partner’s suit, at least game-going values and a singleton (or void) in the suit just named.

Once, my partner opened one club. I had 15 high-card points with six clubs to the ace-king-queen-jack.

I also had a singleton spade, so I responded three spades. It went all pass! Then partner put a singleton spade down in the dummy! I tried hard to make it, but I unluckily ran out of trumps. Six clubs was cold.

In today’s deal, North’s four diamonds was a splinter bid. Then South used 14-30 Roman Key Card Blackwood, understandably believing that his partner had something in clubs to justify his game-force. When North showed one key card (an ace or the spade king), South jumped to six spades.

West, who disliked leading from a jack, chose the club seven. After winning with dummy’s king, how did declarer play?

South saw that the danger was a 3-0 trump split. So, he called for the spade four and underplayed East’s three with his two! When dummy’s four held the trick, declarer drew one more round of trumps and discarded his club loser on dummy’s heart queen.

Note that if West could have taken the second trick, trumps would have been 2-1 and the contract safe -- sort of. Tune in again tomorrow.
