Joliet City Council approves emergency powers for mayor

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday gave the mayor emergency power to shut down businesses that threaten the community welfare.

The authority applies only to businesses that are licensed by the city, but those include groceries, restaurants and hotels among others.

Previously, licensed business could only be shut down after a hearing ordered by the city manager. Now, the mayor can close a business up to seven days if it is determined to be a threat.

City officials have described the measure as one that would be taken in cases of criminal activity, including illegal drug dealing and prostitution, occurring at a business.

Councilman Pat Mudron was the lone “no” vote against the measure, and no one from the public spoke against it.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has dismissed charges against a Joliet woman whose baby was left outside in a parking lot Saturday.

Melissa Vance, 41, was released from the Will County Jail about 6 p.m.

Councilman Larry Hug, however, called the measure “proactive.”

“We live in a very volatile world,” Hug said. “We need to have it on the books.”

City officials pointed to an incident a year ago in which drug deals were linked to a neighborhood grocery. The hearing officer in that case ruled in favor of the business and did not suspend its license.

At 6:56 p.m. Saturday, a neighbor came home and found the infant in a stroller wearing a jacket that was not zipped, according to Joliet police. The girl was taken to the hospital for an examination and turned over to the Department of Children and Family Services.

Police reportedly found Vance and Franklin passed out inside a nearby apartment. Franklin had taken the child to visit a friend and then stopped at a liquor store before he returned to the apartments about 6:20 p.m., Joliet police said.

Franklin still faces three counts of endangering the life or health of a child and still is being held in the Will County Jail.

Joliet nonprofit warning residents of similar-sounding group JOLIET – The Hospice Support Fund, located in Merrifield, Virginia, has been soliciting funds in the Will County area, according to a news release from Joliet Area Community Hospice.

The solicitation is being sent directly to area residents asking for donations to the “Joliet Area Annual Fund Drive,” the news release stated. The Joliet hospice is warning residents not to confuse the Hospice Support Fund with Joliet Area Community Hospice, as there is no affiliation between the two entities.

The Hospice Support Fund is an independent organization and is not affiliated with any local hospice or with any local hospitals in the nation except The New Hope Foundation, according to the news release.

Plainfield eighth-grader wins the competition

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Eighth-grader Kevin Fan emerged as the winner of the Will County Regional Spelling Bee and will head off to Washington, D.C., to compete on the national stage.

Fan, a student at Heritage Grove Middle School in Plainfield, won in an almost three-hour competition among 47 participants Tuesday at Lockport East High School.

The word Fan won on was “distinguishable.”

“I’m really excited,” he said after the spelling bee.

Fan prepared for the competition with a packet from his teacher with words to study. His parents, Mei and Yousheng Fan, tested him every night, he said.

The 47 students from middle schools across Will County represented the best spellers for this year and they were reminded of that after the spelling bee by Larry Wiers, director of school partnerships for Lewis University, a sponsor of the event.

“So you may be disappointed for the moment but to remember that for a lifetime that you were in a very elite tier of spellers in the entire county,” Wiers said.

Each of the students were awarded prizes, including Fan. Among some of the prizes given was a one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids, a Webster’s dictionary, a radio interview and a Kindle Fire tablet.

His school was given a $300 certificate from Scholastic.

Every year, the Will County Regional Office of Education holds a spelling bee, and the winner is sent to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The national competition is one of the nation’s oldest, and more than 11 million students participate in it every year.

Most of the losses in the 21-round spelling bee Tuesday occurred in the beginning rounds. Students were up against words such as “fandango,” “cognition” and “fletcherism.”

The students were able to ask for the definition of the word, its use in a sentence, alternative pronunciation or its origin. Some students further helped themselves by tracing their spelling in the air with their finger or on their assigned card.

Director of school partnerships for Lewis University By the time the spelling bee got to round 14, it was down to three students: Fan; Kaela Calderon, a sixth-grader from Elwood Middle School; and Christian Melendez, an eighth-grader

at Jane Addams Middle School.

However, in the next round, Melendez went out. Fan and Calderon spent the next six rounds competing, and when it got to round 20, Calderon

misspelled “transept” and Fan won by spelling “reincarnation” correctly and then “distinguishable” in the next round.

Jeff Hettrick of ComEd, a sponsor of the spelling bee, said the competition gives students their chance to shine.

“It’s great for them to get up and show their knowledge,” he said. “They also had a lot of encouragement. I know there are lot of parents out here in the audience, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Everybody has been proudly helping their student do the best they can to learn the words.”

D-202 to recognize teachers, staff with awards

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 board will honor teachers and nonadministrative staff who’ve impacted the lives of students and their peers at an upcoming awards ceremony.

The 25th annual Awards of Excellence will be held at 7 p.m. March 23 at the Plainfield South High School auditorium, 7800 W. Caton Farm Road.

A committee of three board members and the board’s community ambassador picks the Awards of Excellence winners from nominations from students, staff and parents, according to a District 202 news release.

Since 1993, the board has honored 370 people with Awards of Excellence.

“It’s the board’s way of acknowledging and honoring people who in some way have had a significant impact on

their students, on their schools, on the communities they serve,” said Tom Hernandez, the district’s spokesman.

Fourteen educators are being recognized as this year’s Awards of Excellence winners. Kelly Hinhorn, a Wesmere Elementary School social worker, will be presented with the second annual Cheryl Ricciardi Exceptional Student Service award.

Tod Schnowske, Plainfield Academy principal, will be given the Richard Ira Jones award. The winner of the Elizabeth “Bess” Eichelberger award will be revealed at the ceremony.

Hernandez said the Jones and Eichelberger awards recognize people for their community involvement and work that goes beyond the district.

“Those are both community service awards,” Hernandez said.

Will County lacks records Chicago Street consultant meets with advisory group system for its facilities

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County is working toward a better record management system for its properties and the potential hiring of a facilities manager.

The Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee met Tuesday morning and received updates on various projects. Its members briefly discussed the quality control aspect of the new $195 million Will County Judicial Complex.

Will County Executive’s Office Deputy Chief of Staff Dave Tkac told the committee he was surprised, having spent most of his career in construction, that the county doesn’t have reliable record documents for any of its assets. He wants to change that for the judicial complex and the under-construction Will County Public Safety Complex.

“One of the goals I have for both of these projects is that we will have excellent record documents that can be updated over time and they can be meaningful to whoever, down the road, is maintaining these buildings,” Tkac said.

He added that, with the help of project delivery teams, the county has started forming a systematic way to

label all the equipment going into the buildings.

The county also is looking at hiring a facilities manager.

The executive’s office is in the process of vetting the 44 people who showed interest in the manager position. The office will have to narrow them down and bring top candidates forward for interviews, Tkac said.

Tkac told the committee a facilities manager would have a lot of input in how to automate a building management system.

The committee also briefly touched on the work environment of the judicial complex.

“We want to make sure we provide that high quality work environment,” said committee Chairman Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox.

Factors that play into the indoor work environment include things such as specific windows, layout, light and temperature control, and other aesthetics.

“The fact you chose to pursue LEED Certification, there’s a heightened sensitivity to focus in on those basics … of indoor environmental quality,” judicial complex project manager Jason Dwyer said.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A downtown advisory committee has been formed as planning for the future redesign of Chicago Street gets underway.

The advisory committee will hold its first meeting Wednesday, which is primarily a brainstorming session with the lead consultant on the project, said Michael Schwarz, planning director for Joliet.

“We’re meeting with a cross section of our downtown,” Schwarz said. “It’s kind of a working group that’s going to give design input to our consultant.”

The lead consultant, Ginkgo Planning & Design, made a presentation to the city council Monday.

The Orland Park firm also was the lead consultant for Will County on a plan to enhance the identity of Route 66 for tourism purposes.

Ferhat Zerin, principal with Ginkgo, said she plans to hold public forums during the development of the Chicago Street Corridor Plan over the next 12 to 14 months.

The city plans to reopen Chicago Street at the spot where it is blocked now by a parking lot serving the Will County courthouse. In the future, the

street would go straight to Interstate 80, which is seen as a way to bring more traffic and customers to the businesses that line Chicago Street, the main street downtown.

The city also is considering changing the design of Chicago Street, which was reconfigured with wider sidewalks and less street-side parking to create the feel of an urban mall after retailers left for indoor malls built in the 1970s.

A downtown plan created in 2015 by the Camiros group called for Chicago Street to be widened with more parking and even a bike path to make it busier and more accommodating to through traffic.

Just what might be done with the street, however, is yet to be determined, Schwarz said.

The city has received an $86,000 grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning for redesign of Chicago Street. That grant matched with $40,000 in city funds is paying for Ginkgo and other consultants working on the design plan.

Plans for downtown also include an expansion and redesign of the Van Buren Street plaza where the fountain is located to create an environment suitable for large gatherings.

Mazon girl focus of Shamrock Shave fundraiser

hprokop@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – Nearly every year since 2009, Algonquin resident Greg Freund has participated in the Shamrock Shave, hosted by St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

This year will be different, however, because money raised by Freund and those on his team will benefit his 14-year-old daughter, Talia Freund, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in July 2016.

“I didn’t realize back in 2009 when I decided to do this, and then [my children] decided to do it with me, that someday it would turn around and be a benefit for us as well as other kids,” Freund said.

Freund’s children, Talia and 13-yearold son Owen Freund, had participated in the Shamrock Shave with their father before. After Talia, who lives in Mazon, was diagnosed with rare bone cancer, the whole family shaved their heads before she started chemotherapy treatments.

“After she realized she was going to lose her hair anyways, she just said, ‘You know what, I’d rather shave it than wait until it starts falling out,’ ” Greg Freund said.

In March, organizations throughout the country hold shaves to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and other local causes. The shaves are meant to raise money for childhood cancer research and show children who have lost hair because of treatments that others stand proudly with them, according to the foundation’s website.

About one in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer before they turn 20 years old, according to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website, and about 4 percent of the current National Cancer Institute budget is dedicated to childhood cancer research.

“There’s not enough being dedicated to ensuring that these children have long lives following treatment, or successful treatments in general,” said Tabitha Freeman, Talia’s mother.

Talia visits her father on weekends and in the summer at his Algonquin home, and lives full time with her brother, mother and stepfather, Joe Freeman, in Mazon.

When Talia was in eighth grade and an active runner, she started experiencing excruciating pain, which doctors at first brushed off as an athletic injury, her mother said. It wasn’t until July

when she officially was diagnosed and admitted at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge.

In December, Talia completed 31 aggressive chemotherapy treatments that were unsuccessful, the family said. Now she will be doing a less intense type of chemotherapy intended to extend her life, and the family is pursuing more holistic treatments, often not covered by insurance.

Tabitha Freeman no longer works, as Talia requires 24-hour care and cannot go to school at Seneca Township High School most days.

“Obviously now things have changed a little bit, and we want to try and enjoy as much as we can with her,” Greg said. “… With the generosity of a lot of people, we’re able to do a lot of things with her.”

In addition to the money being donated to Talia through the Shamrock Shave, Talia and her family have also received support from fundraisers at her high school, and through her recent appearance on the “Windy City LIVE” talk show.

Although she continues to battle cancer, Talia said she hopes people will treat her like a normal teen.

“If they treat you like a cancer patient, you feel like one,” Talia said.

Board hosts student council, ends annual raises for trustees

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Monday’s Channahon Village Board meeting was led

by Channahon Junior High School Student Council ambassadors in the second annual Channahon Student Government Day observance.

Student Council President Dylan Meyer stepped into Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher’s role, calling the meeting to order, introducing measures, calling for the role to be taken and even issuing a proclamation – a resolution to recognize and support Job Shadowing Day at the village of Channahon, which was approved unanimously by the ambassadors and village board members.

“Your vote is now part of our permanent records forever and ever,” Schumacher said.

Approved by the “official” board members at the meeting was an ordinance that will terminate annual raises for elected village officials. Currently, elected officials receive 5 percent raises each year and have since 2005.

According to Finance Director Heather Wagonblott at a previous meeting, over the past 12 years elected officials’ annual meetings reimbursements have increased by a total of $32,221, from $45,360 to $77,581 per year.

The board unanimously approved terminating the annual increases and setting compensations of $250 to each trustee and the village president for each regular, special and committee meeting attended.

Currently, village trustees and the village president receive $216 per meeting, which includes two committee meetings and two board meetings each month.

In the agreement, the village president will also receive $600 each month for maintaining office hours at Village Hall for an average of two hours each week. The village president will also receive $720 a year as liquor control commissioner plus $120 per liquor-related meeting attended.

meeting attended, plus an additional $250 for office hours at Village Hall on an average of two hours per week. The village clerk currently receives $108 per meeting.

The changes will take effect in 2021, as, according to Village Administrator Tom Durkin, compensation of elected officials cannot be increased or reduced during their terms of office.

The board also gave the nod for the police department to put together a program to establish fees for overweight truck permits. Police Chief Jeff Wold said that the village currently requires permits for overweight trucks, but charges no fees.

The number of permits has risen considerably over the past year, Wold said, and many surrounding communities charge fees for the permits that range

from $30 to $70. If Channahon were to charge $50 per permit, Wold said, the village would have received $14,050 in 2016.

Also Monday, the board gave the go-ahead for Community Development Director Mike Petrick to begin a Beautification Plan, which would include ideas to enhance the appearance of the village, including that of the Central Corridor, which includes older sections of town between the I&M Canal and Central Park.

Up for consideration would be decorative benches, litter receptacles, information pillars, identifying monuments and streetlight decoration.

Facades for businesses could also be considered, Petrick said, as could grants that would allow homeowners to spruce up the exteriors of their houses.

The board also will hold a special budget workshop meeting 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Village Hall, 24555 S. Navajo Drive, which is open to the public.

In other news, the Will County Public Safety Complex is 30 percent complete and on track for substantial completion by the end of the year, senior project manager Nicole McElroy said.

By the numbers, crews are: 79 percent complete on Earthwork, 96 per-

cent complete with site utilities, 74 percent complete with concrete, 46 percent complete with masonry, 84 percent complete with steel, 19 percent complete with carpentry and 24 percent complete on mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection.

Tuminello said he and other county leaders were “extremely impressed” on a recent walk-through of the job site.

Trustees voted to allow the village attorney to prepare an ordinance granting approval of a special use for planned development for a mixed-use property at 15025 S. Des Plaines St., which is the former home of the Plainfield Fire Protection District. Developers are looking to repurpose the fire station.

The board voted, 4-3, to approve a certificate of appropriateness for DNA Athletics’ proposed new location at 24210 W. Lockport St. Mayor Mike Col-

lins cast the tie-breaking “yes” vote. A two-story building was first proposed but applicants changed to a one-story proposal.

Trustee Tom Ruane, who voted “no,” had concerns with how much of the lot the building would occupy.

Trustee Brian Wojowski said the previously proposed two-story building was a better fit for the area, and although he said he understood the cost concerns of the applicant, he voted against the certificate.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield residents may see some subtle differences on certain streets this year.

The Plainfield Village Board met Monday night and approved the purchase of 326 American Electric LED light fixtures for a cost not to exceed $73,248.94. The village expects reimbursement of $50,430 through a grant program.

To date, more than 400 streetlights in the village have been retrofitted or replaced. The village will continue to replace outdated and less efficient mercury vapor lights with this purchase.

“We’re trying to step it up a little bit and replace over 300 lights,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said in a video of the meeting posted to the village’s website.

Plainfield trustees also approved the purchase of 10 traffic counting devices

from John Thomas Inc. for $15,100. The village has 11 other traffic counting devices and takes counts at about 100 locations throughout the year.

The devices are used by the Illinois Department of Transportation and other jurisdictions, and help the village track traffic flow and trends.

Trustees also approved several property-related items Monday.

Two downtown properties received facade improvement grants. The building at 24030 W. Lockport St. was approved for an $85,000 grant and the building at 24044 W. Lockport St. was approved for a $36,093 grant.

Director of Planning Jon Proulx said the 24030 W. Lockport St. facade would be a much-anticipated improvement.

Trustees voted to allow the village attorney to prepare an ordinance that would grant a special use permit for a drive-thru for a new Jimmy John’s in Plainfield Plaza at the corner of Route 59 and Fort Beggs Drive.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police: Two arrested after stun gun found in car

JOLIET – Two men were arrested Monday after police reportedly found a stun gun under the seat of their car.

Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said an officer was on patrol at 7:48 p.m. when he saw the driver of a silver Kia sedan commit “multiple traffic violations” and pulled the vehicle over at McDonough and South Joliet streets. According to police reports, the Kia was driven by Shaun W. Matheny, 34, of the 17700 block of 70th Court in Tinley Park, and there was one passenger, Rafael A. Pabon, 47, of the 200 block of Sherman Street in Joliet.

“Matheny was asked to step out and be searched while Pabon remained in the car.

As a backup officer approached, he saw what appeared to be the butt of a handgun sticking out from under the driver’s seat,” Gregory said.

Pabon also was ordered out of the vehicle. The grip the officer saw turned out to be the handle of a Taser that resembles a pistol, Gregory said.

“Neither man claimed ownership, so both were charged with unlawful use of a weapon,” Gregory said. “Matheny also had a pipe with cannabis residue on him and was charged with possession of drug

paraphernalia.”

Both suspects were released on bond.

Will County police: Traffic stop leads to marijuana bust

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Police say a highway traffic stop led to a marijuana seizure Monday.

At 5:45 p.m., a Will County sheriff’s deputy saw the driver of a silver 2012 Toyota sedan commit traffic violations on westbound Interstate 80 and stopped the vehicle near Briggs Street, Will County Deputy Chief Tom Budde said.

“As the deputy approached, he could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and when he asked, the driver admitted there was marijuana inside,” Budde said.

Alexis Gonzalez, 20, of the 1000 block of Sterling Avenue in Joliet, had $540 in his pockets while a search of the vehicle found bags containing 106 grams of marijuana, plastic baggies, a digital scale and ledger, Budde said. Gonzalez was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana and marijuana possession and booked into the Will County Jail. He is being held on $15,000 bond. Gonzalez’s passenger, an 18-year-old man, was released without being charged.

Ronald L. Deininger, 81, of Elwood, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his sons home with wonderful assistance of Joliet Area Community Hospice on Monday, March 6, 2017.

Born: February 24, 1923; in Wilmington, IL Died: March 6, 2017; in Joliet, IL Ardis M. Cassani (nee Greene), age 94, of Joliet, passed away peacefully Monday, March 6, 2017 at Rock Run Place in Joliet, with her family at her side.

She was born February 24, 1923 in Wilmington, and was a graduate of the Pestalozzi-Froebel Teachers College in Chicago.

She taught for over 30 years at Fairmont Grade School in Lockport.

Ardis gave generously of herself to her family, her profession, her church, and her community.

She was a pillar of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she served as Eucharistic Minister, and cared for the church, the rectory and the parish priest, in addition to many other responsibilities and caring acts on behalf of her church family.

In their retirement, she and her husband were active volunteers for Meals on Wheels and loved to go bowling.

She was the beloved mother of Marie (late Kenneth) Swearingian and Larry (Lana Conley) Cassani; dear grandmother of Jennifer (Kevin) Kantorski, Catherine (Jeff) Hoffman, Tony (Kelly)

Illinois.

He is survived by his son, Douglas W. Deininger (Lori) of Plainfield, Illinois; his daughter, Deborah M. Urish (Tim) of Kilbourne, Illinois; and five grandchildren, Kyle and Kelly Deininger and Nicholas (Sondra), Gavin and Eileen Urish.

His is survived by his loving friend and traveling companion, Joanne Rachke. Also surviving is Donald Shewmake (Debra) of Elwood, Illinois, who was like a son and their children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Deininger in 1983; his mother, Maybelle (Reiter) Deininger in 2007; and his wife, Eileen (Moran) Deininger in 1992.

Ronald grew up on a small farm in Joliet, Illinois, went to Joliet Township High School and attended the University of Illinois. He loved raising and showing purebred cattle and spent his summers traveling the country with his mother exhibiting shorthorn cattle. He was a teacher of agriculture and a favorite driver’s education instructor. He was most proud of mentoring his Jackson Township agricultural students for the majority of his career. He was a part-time farmer, which he referred to as “a weekend warrior.” He enjoyed spending time hunting on his farm with his friends and family.

He loved fishing trips and playing Euchre with his teacher friends.

Bernard C. Bisching Jr., age 84, a lifelong resident of Joliet, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 3, 2017.

“Bernie” is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Marilyn (Arundale); his loving daughters, Margo (Daren) Roth of Naperville, IL. And P J Hingst of Westport CT; his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caroline and Rachel Roth; Jeffrey and Samuel Hingst.

Bernie served in the Naval Reserves and retired from Commonwealth Edison’s Engineering Department in 1992 with 40 years of service. He was blessed to have enjoyed 24 years of retirement of which he spent traveling and spending quality time with his family and many friends.

Throughout his entire life he showed tremendous mental, physical and spiritual strength.

Martha Ann (Brewer) Kiester (also known as Love, Ma, Mom, Grandma, Gooma, and Gi-Gi), a longtime resident of the Joliet area, went to be with Jesus on Monday, the 27th of February at Martin Memorial North Hospital in Stuart, FL. Born in 1938 in the small town of Winona, Mississippi, Martha spent her days playing barefoot with her brothers. In junior high, Martha moved to Joliet, where she met the love of her life and husband of 56 years (although she was not very fond of him at first) and where she established and loved her family well.

In her late twenties, Martha lost her eyesight, but that did not stop her from living life to the fullest. She was determined in her selflessness, never letting her blindness slow her down. On a typical day, you would find her joyfully caring for her husband, cooking him 3 meals a day, caring for and pursuing her family, and reading her Braille Bible. Some of her favorite things included listening to books on tape, listening to J. Vernon McGee’s Bible studies, snacking on McDonald’s strawberry pies, and sitting with her family on the back-porch swing.

Martha was truly incredible, endlessly patient, humble, forgiving, strong, and generous in every way. Unwavering in her convictions, she lived to serve Jesus and to love and serve others. Her love for Jesus and her family was unmatched.

She was completely sweet and loved by all who knew her. She touched the lives of everyone who met her, and her consistent and comforting presence will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband, David; older brother, Charles (Joan); younger brother, Lawrence; son, Dave (Mary); daughter, Kristine (Mike) Markley; 3 grandchildren and their spouses; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Because of her love for sharing Jesus with others, Martha served in the women’s auxiliary of the Gideons. She particularly enjoyed ministering to women in jail.

Born: December 27, 1930; in Fountain Hill, PA Died: March 2, 2017; in Springfield, IL Ladislaus “Laslo” Lewis Hunyady, 86, of Matteson passed away at 10:18 P.M. on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

He was born on December 27, 1930 in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania, the son of Laszlo and Mary (Samley) Hunyady. He married Eleanor H. Wuchter on July 28, 1956 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

He earned his Bachelor’s in psychology from Heidelberg College and his Bachelor of Divinity from Lancaster Seminary. He previously served as a pastor at several churches for the United Church of Christ and was a member of the St. Paul Community Church in Homewood and the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ. Laslo also worked for the American Library Association, and the American Medical Association as a permission editor for the Journal of the American Medical Association. He authored a book, “Trek Through Time,” a historic look at many “firsts” that have occurred in our world. In his free time, he enjoyed playing FreeCell, Sudoku, Spider Solitaire, crossword puzzles, and board games, especially those produced by Avalon Hill. He previously was a member of the Lion’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Hunyady of Matteson; daughter, Sheila Rhodes (Steven) of Springfield; daughter-in-law, Janice Hunyady of Northport, Michigan; and sister; Dawn Priscilla Hunyady of Colonia, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Dean Laslo Hunyady; and stepmother: Barbara Hunyady.

Mr. Hunyady will be cremated and a private family memorial service will be held.

Member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, an Elder and taught Sunday School, Kings Daughters and Joliet Women’s Club. She volunteered at the Rialto Square Theatre, American Cancer Society, Joliet Area Community Hospice and Meals on Wheels, also served on the Lombard Library Board.

Gladyce enjoyed playing Bridge and gardening.

Pastor Richard “Rick” E. Mullan, age 57, a longtime resident of Plainfield, IL, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on March 5, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1959 in Cedar Falls, IA. Rick is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Lanette (nee Nevius); his daughter,

O’Keefe; parents, Vincent and Mildred; sisters, Katy, Mary, Donna and Elsie.

Gladys was a lifelong resident of Joliet, IL. Her main roll was a stay-at-home mother; however, she also supported her husband every step of the way in their family-owned business.

Gladys later went on to work at Silver Cross Hospital for 15 years retiring in 1991. Gladys was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, Kathleen, Theodore, Robert, Cassandra, Braelyn and Jaxson. She was a devoted Catholic and enjoyed praying the rosary. She had a special bond with her sister Donna whom she lived with for years. Gladys was a dedicated Chicago Bears fan, avid reader, enjoyed word searches and watching “General Hospital.” Gladys was honored with a Senate Recognition Certificate from the State of Illinois on her 90th birthday from Sen. Pat McGuire.

She was truly loved by those who loved her and her admirers outside the family were many. She will be dearly missed by all.

Janice was born in Chenoa, Illinois, to Charles and Viola Cooper on February 27, 1939.

She attended Chenoa High School.

Janice worked at Personal Products in Wilmington and retired after 32 years of service.

She will be missed by all!

Richard Michael McGrath, age 87, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Richard was born in Joliet, IL on December 10, 1929 to Walter J. and Marie (Bolin) McGrath. He attended St. Patrick Catholic Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School and Joliet Junior College.

Richard was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 38 years and was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean War. Richard enjoyed golfing and following his favorite sports team, the Chicago White Sox. He was a member of the AT&T Pioneers Club, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post #28 of Grand Haven, MI. Preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marie; brother, Raymond McGrath; and granddaughter, Allyson McGrath.

Survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy J. McGrath (nee Clark); children, Richard (Lynne), Karen, Stephen (Mary Kay) and Patrick (Donna) McGrath; grandchildren, Natalie, Mary Grace, Margaret (Maggie), Sean, Kyle, Kaitlyn and Ainsley.

Rick was also a talented musician and guitarist.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Conservative backlash threatens to sink new GOP health care bill

WASHINGTON – A powerful conservative backlash threatened to sink the new Republican health care bill Tuesday less than 24 hours after its launch, even as President Donald Trump and congressional leaders began trying to sell the legislation as the long-promised GOP cure for “Obamacare.”

“We’re going to do something that’s great and I’m proud to support the replacement plan released by the House of Representatives,” Trump declared at the White House as he met Tuesday with the House GOP vote-counting team. “We’re going to take action. There’s going to be no slowing down. There’s going to be no waiting and no more excuses by anybody.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence told GOP lawmakers at the Capitol this was their chance to scuttle President Barack Obama’s 2010 law, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell forecast congressional passage by early April.

But major obstacles loomed as key Republican lawmakers announced their opposition, and one conservative group after another torched the plan.

The Club for Growth, Heritage Action for America, Americans for Prosperity and Tea Party Patriots variously derided the new bill as Obamacare Lite, Obamacare 2.0 and even RyanCare, in a dig at House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

The new GOP plan would repeal the current law’s unpopular fines on people who don’t carry health insurance. It also would replace income-based subsidies, which the law provides to help millions of Americans pay premiums, with age-based tax credits that may

Those payments would phase out for higher-earning people.

The legislation also would limit future federal funding for Medicaid, which covers low-income people, about 1 in 5 Americans. And it would loosen rules that Obama’s law imposed for health plans directly purchased by individuals.

Republican supporters and opponents are all intent on reducing the role of government in health care, but some House conservatives say the new bill doesn’t go nearly far enough.

For example, they are focusing on the system of refundable tax credits they denounce as a costly new entitlement. They’re demanding a vote on a straightforward repeal-only bill.

At the White House meeting Tuesday, Trump made clear to House Republicans that he would be personally engaging with individual members who oppose the bill as leadership tries to round up votes, according to a lawmaker present who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private

gathering.

Not long after, Trump appeared to be making good on his promise, tweeting at Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who has criticized the bill.

“I feel sure that my friend @RandPaul will come along with the new and great health care program because he knows Obamacare is a disaster!” the president wrote. The president plans to reconvene the group next week and will meet with conservative leaders to discuss the issue Wednesday.

The concerted conservative opposition was a remarkable rebuke to legislation GOP leaders hope will fulfill seven years of promises to repeal and replace Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, pledges that played out in countless Republican campaigns for House and Senate as well as last year’s race for president.

Instead, the groups that are uniting to oppose the new House legislation include many that sprang up to oppose passage of “Obamacare” in the first place.

Hands down, one of the best parts of my job as president of Joliet Junior College is connecting with our students and alumni to hear their success stories. It’s not surprising to me that at the core of their journeys are similar themes.

The choice to pursue an education, to persist in the face of internal and external struggles, was worth what was waiting for them at their end of their academic journey: better job prospects, the chance to start a new career, increased earnings, and opportunities that simply weren’t available to them before.

It is my job, and the job of many others at Joliet Junior College, to ensure we inspire our students’ success and remove any barriers or obstacles that may get in their way on their path to success.

Increasing accessibility to a higher education for all has remained a basic tenet of JJC’s mission since it was founded as the nation’s first public community college 116 years ago.

Maintaining that accessibility for students, however, isn’t always easy. Daily, our institution is faced with incredibly difficult choices as the state budget crisis looms large and directly impacts our ability to support students and innovate in our programming.

We’ve made significant cuts to our operations – over $2 million in four years – and we continue to do more with less.

We gave out nearly $700,000 in scholarships last year, thanks to the JJC Foundation, so that our students would bear less of a financial burden to attend college while we’ve considered last resort options such as raising tuition to make up for dwindling state support.

Our students and our community deserve the same opportunities given to those generations that came before them, and we are working diligently to

Understanding how this accessibility impacts real people is critical. One student that I think of immediately is Victoria Barclay, who reached out to me recently to share her story. Victoria began her journey at JJC in 2014 with a GED. She was self-taught leading up to her classes at JJC, and hadn’t found an educational outlet in her native Canada that she felt would successfully support her return to school as a young adult. Although she initially planned to enter the vet tech program, she soon gained an interest in chemistry after taking a general chemistry class.

Victoria also worked part time as a tutor to make ends meet in the Tutoring and Learning Center on campus. Along the way, she received numerous scholarships that helped her along the way financially. Today, Victoria is transferring 67 credits and a 4.0 GPA from JJC to a chemical engineering program at Olivet Nazarene University, receiving the highest academic scholarship of $23,000 a year.

Victoria told me that she was so appreciative of the JJC network – faculty, staff, and her peers – all of whom were accepting of her nontraditional path and helped her find her way during a time in which she wondered if there were any higher educational options left for her.

Victoria’s story, perhaps, is not unlike your own, or your children’s. We all deserve possibility. We all deserve opportunity. It is my promise to you and to our community that we will work diligently to maintain this access to education for you and for future generations.

To the Editor: During Donald Trump’s campaign, he promised to reopen coal mines and get our steel mills rolling again, and also get a huge spending bill to fix America’s roads and bridges.

So far, he’s put out a travel ban, started a mass deportation against our Mexican neighbors, and repealed transgender bathroom use.

So much for important campaign promises.

To the Editor: The work that has been done on the Loop Trail at Pilcher Park is phenomenal.

Prior to the repair, the trail had deteriorated to more of an obstacle course with washed-out bridges and ruts. The new limestone trail is so nice.

Bolingbrook scores 57 in second half, whips West Aurora

dgoss@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – For a half, West Aurora appeared primed to upset No. 1 seed Bolingbrook in Tuesday’s semifinal game at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional.

About an hour later, the crowd walked from the gym buzzing about how good this Bolingbrook team can be.

After leading only 28-27 at halftime, the Raiders exploded for 57 second-half points – yes, 57 – to run away from the Blackhawks, 85-66.

That vaulted the Raiders (27-1) into Friday night’s sectional championship game against the winner of Wednesday night’s semifinal between Joliet Central and Joliet West.

The second-half onslaught came as a result of 22-for-30 field goal shooting, a cool 73.3 percent. Joseph Yesufu connected on a 3-pointer from the corner off a pass from Kaleb Thornton and Nana Akenten hit a 15-footer from the baseline, both early in the third quarter.

That was it from the outside. The other 20 Raiders’ second-half baskets came on layups and putbacks. Guards Thornton and Yesufu broke down the defense of West Aurora (21-9) time and again. Thornton had a half-dozen assists in the second half himself.

On the receiving end of many of Thornton’s pinpoint passes was Malik Binns, who led the Raiders with 21 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 9 of 12 shots.

Thornton and Yesufu chipped in 15 points apiece, with 13 of Yesufu’s coming in a 33-point third quarter as the

“Fifty-seven points in the second half, that’s one of our best all year,” Yesufu said with a smile. “We picked it up on the defensive end. That’s where the offense was created.”

Yesufu, a sophomore, is a good passer in his own right, but he said he has gotten better simply from watching

Thornton, a junior who transferred in this season from Nazareth Academy, on a daily basis.

“I have learned a lot from him,” Yesufu said. “How he maneuvers to get in position to deliver the passes like he does. I feed off him.”

Akenten is Bolingbrook’s main man and has been all season. On Tuesday night, he scored seven points after being blanked in the first half, which only

demonstrates how balanced the Raiders are.

“We have five different guys who have scored over 20 points in a game,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost noted.

“They were guarding me tough and I communicated that to our other guys,” Akenten said. “Everybody else stepped up, especially in the second half.

Neuqua Valley athletic director Barbara Barrows is retiring after this school year, and Adkins, who resigned after the current season as boys basketball coach at Plainfield East, was approved at the Indian Prairie School District 204 board meeting Monday night as Barrows’ successor.

“I am very excited about this

opportunity,” Adkins said. “Barb Barrows is a Hall of Fame athletic director. She has been the athletic director there for 20 years, since Neuqua opened.

“Not only has she been there from the beginning, many of the coaches have, too. That tells you something about the family atmosphere the school has.”

Adkins, 43, has been in coaching for 22 years. He began coaching in the Plainfield district at South, then briefly was the athletic director at

East’s best season under Adkins was the 27-2 regional championship 2011-12 season, which featured Brian Bennett. The Bengals won regionals in 2014 and 2015 with teams led by allstater Aaron Jordan, finishing 19-10 and 18-12, respectively. Bennett went on to enjoy a solid college career at Cal Poly, and Jordan is a sophomore guard at Illinois.

“The last time we played on this floor, we lost [to Lincoln-Way East]. We got in the locker room at halftime and said we didn’t want to lose here again. The second half reminded us what kind of team we can be and what we can do.”

Brost said the game the Nebraska-bound Akenten had typifies the team player he has been all year.

“They were face-guarding him all night,” Brost said. “In that situation, he did what we should have done. They knew if they left Nana, he would start doing Nana things.

“I don’t care how many points he averages.

It’s probably about 15, and he could average twice that. But as usual, he did a really good job in system.”

The Raiders were in a tight game at halftime largely because they forced 15 first-half turnovers with their quickness and athleticism. West Aurora committed 27 turnovers in all.

“We weren’t finishing in the first half,” Yesufu said. “In the second half, everyone was going to the basket and finishing. We have a lot of depth. Anyone we bring in off the bench helps because they all can finish.”

Tyler Cochran chipped in nine points and Isaiah Clemons eight for the Raiders. West Aurora’s Damian Virgen led all scorers with 27 points.

“We shared the ball real well in the second half,” Brost said. “We played better. Once we get up, we are hard to guard. Our guards made good decisions.

“West Aurora is a good team. They very prepared and well coached. We were fortunate enough to win.”

That’s the likely result whenever a 57-point half occurs.

“We had a newborn at the time, and East was opening and they offered me an opportunity to stay in athletic administration and start the basketball program here,” he said. “I liked the opportunity to stay in basketball and start the program, so I came here.”

Adkins said in the last couple of years, he began thinking about “what my professional route would be. I thought I might stay in it until I coached 25 years. But then this opportunity came up at Neuqua.

‘Sam’ the guiding hand for USF’s No. 1 ranking

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Describing Samantha Quigley Smith’s six-year run as a women’s basketball coach at University of St. Francis, the last five as head coach, as a whirlwind may be an injustice.

The 29-year-old Joliet Catholic Academy graduate and former honorable mention All-American point guard at DePaul returned home after her college days to work under interim women’s basketball coach (and head baseball coach) Brian Michalak for a year before she took the reins.

The Saints finished 28-5 last season, made their first NAIA National Tournament appearance in 13 years and were sixth in the final NAIA Division II coaches’ poll.

This season, USF (31-1) has been ranked No. 1 most of the season. The Saints will try to live up to their No. 1 seed when they open at 5:15 p.m.

Wednesday against California-Merced in the NAIA Division II National Tournament at Sioux City, Iowa.

Oh, but there is a whole lot more happening in Quigley Smith’s life besides building the Saints into a national power.

She is an organizer/coach with the AQ Champions, a local girls travel basketball program. Last summer, she married Greg Smith, who played basketball at Providence Catholic and USF and is coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.’s No. 1 assistant at Joliet Central. They have a 11/2-year-old son Jackson, and baby No. 2 is due April 11.

Not that there is much spare time, but Quigley Smith also was on the coaching staff of the Team USA U16 squad that played in Mexico in the summer of 2015 and qualified for the 2016 World Championships as a U17 team in Zaragoza, Spain.

“Working with USA Basketball has really been a cool experience,” she said after practice as the Saints prepared for the national tournament. “USA Basketball really is top of the line.

“Carol Callan is one of the most amazing people I have ever met.

She runs the women’s basketball program for the United States. She comes right out and says, ‘We win gold medals.’ Of course, we haven’t done that yet – maybe she’ll get rid of me.”

LEARNING FROM OTHERS

At DePaul, Quigley Smith played for Doug Bruno, now her close friend.

She has been associated with numerous other coaches she said have influenced how she goes about guiding the Saints.

“We’re still doing some drills we were doing when I was an assistant for Coach Michalak,” she said. “Of course, It all started when I got such a great foundation as an elementary school player here in Joliet.

“Later on, I played for Bruno. He wants his players to focus on every detail. The year I sat out with an injury [at DePaul], that’s when I knew coaching was my passion.”

The reigning two-time Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Quigley Smith emphasized that being a good coach does not mean you know everything.

“Our coaching staff is constantly asking each other questions,” she said of the group that includes Dan McCarthy, Mike Delrose, Cosima Times and graduate assistant Abbey Hengesbach. “That’s what makes the

best coaches. The best head coaches had to steal from other coaches. Nobody knows everything themselves.

Every day, we have another discussion about could have been different in what we did.”

The game that might have defined the season for USF was an 80-69 victory at Lewis on Dec. 7.

“That Lewis game was a real turning point for this team,” Quigley Smith said. “The girls learned from that game, they are constantly learning and they want to learn. I don’t have to pull teeth to get things done.”

The respect the Saints’ players have for Quigley Smith is evident.

Most refer to her as Sam – she not only is their coach, but they consider her one of them. Yet she can be tough if the situation demands.

“Sam has a real good relationship with her players,” McCarthy said.

“But she also has that coach streak in her. She can let them know when she is not happy with something, yet she has that great personality.”

McCarthy has been an assistant for Quigley Smith all five years she has been the head coach.

“We’re on a nice little learning curve,” he said. “Our numbers were down when we first started. Some players that were in the program

She is averaging 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds and was looking forward to one more shot at the national tournament. However, it will not happen for her.

The Saints left Joliet on Sunday and stopped in Des Moines, Iowa, to spend the night before continuing on to Sioux City.

On Monday morning, Giddings suffered what was described as an unexpected illness that required emergency surgery. She is out for the tournament.

That means the rest of the Saints will need to step up; Quigley Smith may have to reach deeper into her coaching bag.

That also may mean an extra call to older sister Allie Quigley, who is playing professionally in Istanbul, Turkey, and will be back with the Chicago Sky when the WNBA season begins.

“I talk to Allie a lot,” Quigley Smith said. “She gave us a couple of zone plays from the Sky that we use.

Allie and I constantly are thinking about and talking about game situations.”

As Quigley Smith said, you learn from the resources available. And you never quit learning.

The result of that approach is a résumé that continues to add glitter.

Still, she sees nothing wrong with continuing to win at St. Francis.

“Greg and I got married in the chapel here at USF and had the reception in the gym,” said Quigley Smith, whose late father’s name adorns the floor at the Sullivan Center – Pat Quigley Court. “Our connection with St. Francis is really special.”

“People ask how long Sam is going to be here,” McCarthy said, “and she tells ’em Joliet is her home.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

A year ago, history was made when the boys basketball teams from Joliet West and Joliet Central met for the first time in sectional competition.

And as one might suspect with a clash between big rivals, there wasn’t much that separated the two teams. The Tigers prevailed, 47-44, and went on to beat Oswego in the Lockport Sectional final before falling to Benet Academy in the supersectional.

Wednesday at Lincoln-Way East, West (25-3) and Central (23-5) will meet again at 7 p.m. in the Class 4A sectional semifinal, which determines who will face Bolingbrook, the winner of Tuesday’s other semifinal, in Friday’s championship.

The Steelmen and Tigers have already established a record for combined wins between them with 48, breaking the mark of 44 set in 1972.

Their combined winning percentage of .857 is better than the old standard of .786 when the teams went 44-12 in 1972.

The Tigers are hoping to become the first Joliet Township team to reach consecutive sectional finals since the combined program did so in 2001 and 2002 under Bob Koskosky.

Last year’s sectional matchup was a thriller with the Steelmen rallying to lead, 35-30, early in the final quarter. But the Tigers used a 15-2 run to go up, 45-37, with a minute left and held off a late Central threat with a steal and layup in the final seconds to wrap things up. West also claimed 72-63 and 58-51 victories during the two regularly scheduled games.

It was more of the same this season when the teams played on Feb. 18 in their only meeting. The Steelmen trailed 39-31 late in the third quarter before moving in front thanks to a 12-0 run. There were eight lead changes in the final five minutes before West claimed a 51-49 victory for their fourth-straight win in the series.

Beside the significance of the rivalry, another interesting twist involves Central coach Lawrence Thompson Jr., who retired from Lockport after the 2015 season and has coached for the past two seasons in the Joliet Township district. After serving as West’s sophomore coach a year ago, he took over as the Steelmen varsity coach after Jeff Corcoran stepped down.

Joachim (4.8), Ryan Saunders (4.5) and Ryan King (3.8).

“We’re hoping to have a great game in which each team will be at their best,” Thompson said. “Both teams have had great seasons and are very deserving of the moment.”

Nick DiForti became just the second Tigers coach to win back-to-back regionals, joining Mike O’Connell, who did so in both 1984 and 1985 and again in 1992 and 1993. West’s 46 wins during the last two years also is the most in school history.

matchup on a roll. The Tigers are 14-2 in 2017 and have won eight straight since losing, 84-74, to Bolingbrook on Jan. 24. The Steelmen have gone 11-4 in 2017 and are 9-2 since falling, 60-55, to Bolingbrook on Jan. 17.

“This will be the fifth time in 12 months we have played our crosstown rival and not many teams can say that,” DiForti said. “It is always a good game and I expect this game to be the same. It is nice for the coaching staffs, players, students and community to have such a game on such a stage.”

Rizzo goes deep with consistency

First baseman’s offensive stats the past 2 years nearly identical

To call Rizzo the face of the Cubs’ franchise might be a stretch, only because this team has so many “franchise” faces: Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez and on and on.

Rizzo, 27, was not the first player acquired by Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer when they took over Cubs baseball operations in the fall of 2011, but he was the most important at the time.

Five years later, Rizzo has taken his place among both the franchise faces and team leaders.

“Everyone leads in their own different way,” he said early in spring training. “You’ve got quieter guys. You’ve got guys who are louder. You’ve got guys who do it by example.

I think we’re all unique in our own way, and everyone gets

along and understands people’s styles, and it’s not just this way or the highway. There are guys who do different things, and we all understand that.”

Rizzo last year earned his third straight All-Star nod along with his first Gold Glove at first base and his first Silver Slugger award.

He hit two home runs in the National League Championship Series and one in the World Series while going 9 for 25 against the Cleveland Indians.

But what stands out most with Rizzo is his eye-popping consistency over the past two seasons. Here is how consistent it was for this left-handed-hitting offensive force: n In 2015, Rizzo put up a batting line of .278/.387./512 for an OPS of .899 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs. He walked 78 times and struck out 105. His OPS-plus was 146. n In 2016, he had a line of .292/.385/.544 for an OPS of .928 with 32 home runs and 109 RBIs. He had 74 walks and 108

step up after the losing 2014 season and say the goal for 2015 was to win the NL Central. The Cubs didn’t do that, but they won a wild-card game and advanced to the NLCS. Soon after Rizzo uttered his words about winning the NL Central, the Cubs hired Joe Maddon as manager in late

2014.

“His message since Day 1 when he got here was, ‘Push yourself to the limit you don’t think you can get to, and you’ll see in a few years, we’ll be way past that,’ ” Rizzo said. “That’s what we plan on doing.”

Rizzo said he was most impressed by how his fellow young players have grown with the organization.

“I think the way we have the talent, it’s been talented for a while now,” he said. “To bring in the right pieces and to let guys blossom, you don’t see that a lot, especially winning teams.

You don’t see guys coming in and being able to get an opportunity to just go out and play.

We do a good job, and Joe does a really good job of getting guys in and out and giving guys days off. Everything. Everything from the facilities to the whole staff from the Dominican to Joe. Everyone in between is all in.

“Honestly, I think that anyone who puts this jersey on knows the feeling. Just because we won the World Series, (it) isn’t a different feeling than anyone else who puts this jersey on. It’s still the same feeling.”

Anderson wants to separate himself from the rest

sgreenberg@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Todd Frazier is expected to make his Cactus League debut Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Camelback Ranch. That means the White Sox finally will have their biggest home run bat back in the lineup. It also means Frazier, returning from a strained oblique muscle on his left side, will be – for four or five innings, anyway – back in his customary spot at third base. And it means Tim Anderson had better clean out his ears.

Anderson, a 23-year-old shortstop, quietly was one of the American League’s top rookies in 2016. Whether or not he could have been as successful as he was without Frazier constantly chirping at him is hard to say.

Actually, there is no question the veteran was a huge help to Anderson in the field, positioning him before

and during at-bats. Anderson – who played only two seasons of baseball in high school, neither at shortstop – needed the help, and likely still does.

“I say, ‘Tim, eventually you’re going to have to start going with your gut on what these hitters do,’ something I learned myself from Scott Rolen,” Frazier said. “Right now, it’s fine. I don’t mind. Eventually, I’m going to look over and he’s going to be in the right spot.”

If Anderson is going to blow up into a full-fledged star – many believe he will – his rough edges will have to be smoothed over at the plate, too. He had a nice-looking .283 batting average and showed flashes of explosive power to go with his obvious speed, but the strikeouts were awfully high (117) and the walks awfully low (13) in 410 rookie at-bats.

“The word is, ‘He strikes out a lot and doesn’t walk much,’ but that’s for people outside this locker room,” Anderson said. “I can’t really con-

trol what other people think about me, but I can control getting better.

Things happen as you grow and mature. I’m still growing.”

Anderson’s favorite shortstop to watch is Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor. He’s a fan of the Cubs’ Addison Russell, too, and can envision a time when there’s robust debate about who’s the No. 1 shortstop in Chicago.

“I’ve got to find out what separates me from those other guys,” he said. “I’m big on finding ways to separate yourself – speed, bat, defense, whatever.”

Frazier believes his infield partner is “right there with any shortstop” measuring by pure talent. He even dares to liken Anderson to the great Ozzie Smith.

“I’m not saying he’s there yet, but he can emulate that,” Frazier said.

“Even when he’s not in the right position, he can get to the ball so quickly and has such a nice release. He needs to work on his (back) flip, though.”

games. “Crazy things happen in the tournament,” Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said. “Anybody can beat anybody.” True enough. Michigan beat Purdue by 12 on Feb. 25, Maryland’s lost to Nebraska and Penn State, and Wisconsin dropped three in a row before hammering Minnesota on Sunday. “The tournament is wide open,” Izzo said, “more so than it’s ever been.”

DAUNTING TASK: The four teams playing Wednesday night face the prospect of winning five straight to capture the tournament. Last-place Rutgers is the long-shot, but at least the Scarlet Knights are coming off a victory against Illinois.

“It was a win was desperately needed,” coach Steve Pikiell said. “We can get down there with a little bit of a positive vibe.” Penn State and Nebraska have little reason to be upbeat. The Nittany Lions have dropped five straight and the Cornhuskers have lost their last four.

ON WISCONSIN: The Badgers secured the No. 2 seed by getting back on track against Minnesota. “It’s a credit to our guys, not giving in,” said coach Greg Gard, whose team will face either Iowa or Indiana. The Badgers swept Indiana and lost to the Hawkeyes, 59-57, last Thursday.

HEY, WE’RE GOOD: Only three Big Ten schools are ranked in the Top 25 (No. 13 Purdue, No. 24 Wisconsin and No. 25 Maryland). For those who believe the conference is enduring a down year because there is no elite team, Izzo has this to say: “Parity doesn’t mean poor. WASHINGTON – As part of an ongoing effort to broaden its scope, the Big Ten will converge a few blocks from the White House this week to crown a new basketball champion.

Long a fixture in the Midwest, the Big Ten Tournament will be held in the nation’s capital for the first time.

“It’s going to be some big-time basketball,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. “We’re just glad we get to do it in our backyard, which should be fun.”

By adding Maryland and Rutgers to the conference in 2014, the Big Ten formally extended its footprint to the East Coast. This year’s tournament, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday, will be held at Verizon Center. Next year’s tourney will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“It really is an example of a traditional conference that continues to change,” Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said in October, when all 14 teams gathered in Washington for Media Day. “Our actions are aligned with our plans. This is a very important part of the country for us.”

Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State (which joined in 1990) will have the luxury of traveling to the tournament by bus.

“We’re excited about not having to get on a plane,” Turgeon said. “It’s great for our fans.”

Third-seed Maryland doesn’t play until Friday night. The Terrapins have already sold their entire allotment of tickets, and the local contingent could increase over the weekend.

“Terp fans have been trying to snatch up tickets,” Turgeon said. “If we’re lucky enough to advance, our crowds will continue to grow.”

Home court advantage? Quite possibly.

“Especially since the rest of us are coming so far,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said of Maryland’s advantage.

“It’s pretty exciting for them, and maybe incentive for their fans and them to get to the semifinals and finals, no question about it.”

Purdue, the regular season champion, has won eight of nine. The Boilermakers, along with Wisconsin, Maryland and Minnesota, have double-byes before starting play. The tournament gets underway Wednesday afternoon with 12thseed Nebraska facing No. 13 Penn State, followed by 11th-seeded Ohio State taking on No. 14 Rutgers.

USF softball team wins 2 in Arizona SUBMITTED REPORTS

TUCSON, Arizona – With two victories on the second day of its spring break trip, the University of St. Francis softball team extended its winning streak to seven games.

The Saints (7-1, 4-0 in Arizona) opened Monday with a 10-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan (3-12) before defeating 0-4 Mount Marty, 9-5, at the Tucson Invitational Games. Against Dakota Wesleyan, sophomore starter Taylor Barsz (Lockport) and junior reliever Morgan Dieringer (Lincoln-Way West) combined on a six-inning, four-hit shutout. USF took a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning before sending 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run outburst. Ashley Galason had two hits and drove in a run in the inning.

Barsz (3-0) yielded three hits and a walk while fanning four. Entering the game in the top of the fifth inning with the Saints on top, 3-0, and the bases loaded with no outs, Dieringer struck

out the first two batters before inducing a popup to the catcher to end the threat.

Anna Wetherell and Ally Balandis each had two RBIs. Wetherell, Galason and sophomore left fielder Hailey Lenth had two hits.

In the win over mount Marty, USF trailed 5-4 before scoring twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth en route to the come-from-behind victory. Hot Pan Noodles & Dumplings are made to order, from scratch MYSTERY DINER

JOLIET – Two friends who had recently discovered Hot Pan Noodles & Dumplings in Joliet insisted I had to try it.

Both friends know I’m picky about food. Which is why they insisted.

“It’s run by a husband and wife and they make everything from scratch,” one friend said. “You can ask questions about every ingredient used and they custom-make everything, even the noodles.”

Hot Pan’s website underscored that statement: “We don’t slice and prepare our ingredients until we’re ready to use them.”

Hmm. So one day, those two friends invited me and another friend to dinner. The menu itself was both complex and stark. For instance, one could choose from several specialties, such as noodles with squid or cuttlefish balls sautéed in garlic, ginger, vinegar with black bean and vegetables.

Or one may simply order a plate of noodles and then choose, if so desired, from a long list of “extra” ingredients.

Beverages ranged from a variety of craft beers and soft drinks to jasmine tea and spicy ginger soda. Most of us chose cream soda.

So what did we order, food-wise?

We started with an order of vegetable pot stickers, which came out nicely browned, a little crisp on the edges, and bursting with minced vegetables, such as spinach and carrot.

The dipping sauce, if our taste buds were correct, was flavored with soy, green onion, salt and pepper, with hints of ginger and chili.

One friend had fried noodles with beef and vegetables: cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, onion, broccoli and spinach. He said the noodles had “a perfect texture” and that the sesame seed topping gave it a “nice, little kick.”

A second friend ordered the same, and said the combination of “nicely browned beef” with the vegetables was “well-proportioned.”

I had the fried noodles and beef as well, but selected only broccoli and cabbage for my vegetables. When it arrived with an extra ingredient I

What was interesting about the study was that it took a while for the glucosamine/ chondroitin to work. At one to four months, Celebrex was much better at improving pain, but at six months it was no different than the glucosamine/chondroitin combination. So with the use of glucosamine and chondroitin, it is important to be patient.

The supplements MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) are anti-inflammatory agents that have been studied in arthritis of the knees without evidence of benefit, but it’s possible they could decrease pain in the joints of the hands.

Arnica montana is a plant-based therapy that has some potential in topical use for pain relief, with one study finding a slight benefit for arthritis of the hands. Topical use of capsaicin cream, made from chili peppers, has shown potential as well, specifically for arthritis of the knee. Other natural remedies and supplements, such as fish oil, are touted for arthritis, but their use has not been well studied.

As for exercises, I would recommend physical therapy to increase your range of motion for your shoulder and to help increase your muscular strength. Yoga, Pilates and tai chi can also be beneficial, potentially increasing your range of motion without undue stress on your already aching joints. Over time, you may well see a difference in your ability to function with less pain.

Dear Doctor: Are there natural remedies for arthritis? Exercises that could help? My pain is in the upper arms and shoulders.

Dear Reader: Osteoarthritis, the kind that you’re describing, is caused by degeneration of the cartilage within a joint. Without the cartilage, one bone rubs upon the other, leading to pain and degeneration of the bone.

Doctors typically recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin; acetaminophen; and, more rarely, opiates. But NSAIDs can increase the risk of stomach ulcers and kidney problems when used chronically; acetaminophen at high doses can cause liver problems when used chronically; and opiate medications can lead to addiction. So I can understand your desire to look for an alternative for the pain.

The supplements chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine have been used for osteoarthritis for years. Chondroitin is one of the building blocks of cartilage in our body, so many people naturally believe that taking chondroitin can decrease the pain of arthritis.

A 2015 review of 43 randomized trials compared the use of chondroitin alone or in combination with glucosamine against the use of a placebo. Most of these studies looked at treatment for arthritis of the knees, with some looking at arthritis of the hips and hands. The studies measured pain on a 100-point scale. The use of chondroitin was found to be beneficial, whether with or without glucosamine, showing a small 8-point difference in pain compared with placebo. It didn’t ease the stiffness and lack of mobility associated with arthritis, however.

In another study, a randomized trial of 606 patients with pain from osteoarthritis of the knee compared the use of glucosamine with chondroitin against the anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib (Celebrex). After six months, both groups found a greater than 50 percent

North is just worth game, but there is a better bid than four spades.

He should jump to four clubs. This is a splinter bid showing four-card spade support, game-going values and a singleton (or void) in clubs -near-perfect!

Suddenly South sees that he has no club losers. He might jump straight to six spades, but perhaps should content himself with five spades, which North ought to raise with such good red suits -- South must have excellent trumps to be slamming without all of those red honors.

How did declarer plan the play after West led the spade jack?

South saw that he needed trumps to be 3-2 and to have some luck in the red suits. However, there were transportation difficulties, and he did not want to rely on a red-suit finesse.

Declarer spotted an unusually good line. He won the first trick with the spade ace, cashed the club ace and ruffed a club. The next card he called for surprised everyone at the table, particularly East: dummy’s diamond 10. East took this with his queen and returned a second trump, but declarer won in his hand, ruffed another club, cashed the top hearts, ruffed a heart, drew West’s last trump and claimed. He took four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, one club and two club ruffs.
