The end of year is a good time for reflection on news, everything else The end of a calendar always seems like a natural time to reflect on the past year.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

For me, it was a great year personally and professionally to get the opportunity to join your communities as editor of The Herald-News, Morris Herald-News and Herald Life.

But there have been plenty of tough times along the way, minor ways and larger ones.

This isn’t about me, though.

This is about community. And over the coming week, we’ll take a look back and a look forward.

We’ll count down our stories of the year both locally and nationally, showcase our photos of the year, count down the sports stories of the year and tell

VIEWS Jon Styf you what’s in store for 2017 across our coverage map.

Of course, we can’t predict everything that is going to happen. We’ll just showcase the areas that will progress and issues that need to be decided in the next calendar year.

When 74.5 percent of registered Will County voters showed up at the polls in November, it was a good moment.

Even though past data show it won’t happen, remember the importance of voting as April primaries approach.

Because, while the presidential elec-

tion usually has the most controversy and big names, local elections are what have the most impact on your daily lives through both taxing and local decisions made.

Here’s hoping those primaries have higher numbers than before as well.

And here’s hoping the Rialto and city of Joliet work out an agreement that keeps the theater afloat and financially solvent into the future.

As for the many other pending local issues, here’s hoping I get to know them more as I get to know you more into 2017.

Joliet Park District settles Egizio case for $375,000

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District has approved a $375,000 settlement in the sexual harassment lawsuit involving former Executive Director Dominic Egizio.

The park district and Egizio were sued in the matter involving Jeanetta Matichak, who worked as a trainer at the district. Matichak alleged she was harassed

by Egizio and that the park board tolerated the situation.

Executive Director Tom Carstens on Friday released the following statement on the settlement.

“The Joliet Park District is not admitting liability. In order to achieve effective operations of the District, we feel it is in the best interests of the District to look to the future. All settlement funds will be paid by our insurance company.”

Carstens said he would not comment beyond the statement.

Egizio was placed on administrative leave in August 2015 and resigned in October of that year. He is now director of parks and recreation for the Midlothian Park District.

The lawsuit alleged that the park district knew of the relationship between Egizio and Matichak previously without taking ap- Dominic propriate action.

Egizio Matichak was put on unpaid in May 2015. The lawsuit stated that she had suffered “extreme trauma and a breakdown requiring hospitalization.”

In his response to the lawsuit filed in federal court, Egizio acknowledged a relationship with Matichak and even admitted that he gave her “some clothing and a

sex toy.” But he denied some of the more damaging allegations, including that he stalked Matichak, threatened her, and on one occasion took her to a hotel and committed a sexual assault.

Egizio, in his response, said that park board members Glen Marcum, who was then president and has since died, and Art Schultz Jr. talked to him about rumors that he was having sex with Matichak.

Egizio said the board did not conduct an investigation.

The park district in a separate response denied the alleged conversations with Marcum and Schultz.

The park district did conduct an investigation when Egizio was put on leave.

At that time, Matichak’s lawyer, Robin Potter, had notified the park district of a possible lawsuit.

The park board approved the settlement Monday.

Claus couple deliver Christmas magic to single father and his 7 children

SHOREWOOD – It’s Santa!

It’s Santa!

The children’s squeals filled the air as three trucks from the Troy Fire Protection District turned down the street where Jeff Otte, a single father, and his seven children live.

Waving from the top of one of the trucks were Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Although one of Santa’s helpers had tipped off Otte that Christmas’ first couple would be paying his children a visit, a smiling Otte watched in disbelief as the trucks stopped in front of his house.

“I’m very, very shocked,” Otte said.

“I didn’t expect the fire department.”

This wasn’t a random visit. Otte’s oldest son, Brandon Otte, has Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Otte’s 2-year-old son, Noah Otte, has autism and is nonverbal.

LCH is a rare cancer that causes excessive amounts of white blood cells to accumulate and form tumors, also known as lesions. Brandon will complete a 52-week chemotherapy regimen in February.

Jeff is working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so Santa and Mrs. Claus dropped by with a boxful of presents, two types of cookies, one children’s Bible and plenty of Christmas cheer for Brandon, Noah and their siblings: Julie, 7; Natalie, 6; Emilie, 4; Callie, 3; and Benjamin, 16 months.

Because Jeff is a Frankfort Fire Department lieutenant/paramedic, Santa contacted Troy Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle about the possibility of riding to the Otte house in a truck.

Doyle readily agreed and sent a few firefighters to stand in for the elves.

“The guys are going with him to help Santa give the gifts to the kids,” Doyle said. “The kids deserve this.

They’ve gone through so much.”

Rochelle Perinar of Shorewood arranged the Santa visit. Perinar is a recently retired nurse for Troy School District 30-C and had worked at the school some of the Otte children attend.

Perinar said people from the school have supported the Ottes in various ways, including fundraisers and helping out with the kids.

She felt a surprise appearance from the man in the red suit would add some Christmas magic, especially in light of the challenges.

“The biggest is getting people to come in to give quality time to the children,” Perinar said. “He doesn’t need just one person. With seven kids, he needs a team.”

So Perinar called her brother, Arthur Hrvatin of Plano, a former Joliet resident, and his partner, Patricia Price, also of Plano. For the last five years, Hrvatin and Price have maintained a special connection to Santa and Mrs. Claus and try to arrange a very special visit each year to children in need.

“We do it because we love the Lord,” Price said.

Christmas surprises for the family. On Monday, the Make-A-Wish Foundation is sending the family to Disneyland in California, Jeff said.

Then on Jan. 22, the Joliet Jaguar Hockey Club and its peewee 1 hockey team will host a special hockey fundraiser for Brandon, who will be the honorary peewee 1 team captain for that night.

Brandon had participated on the team before he was diagnosed with LCH last year, said Chris Simpson, Jaguar board member. Since then, the club has included Brandon in activities as much as possible, including its recent Christmas party, he added.

In fact, members were present to share in Brandon’s excitement when Santa rode up on a fire truck. At hockey games, Brandon sits on the bench with the other members, said Laura Hubbard, team manager.

“He’s even done warm-ups with them,” Hubbard said.

Rialto agreement is still unfinished business

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An agreement that would seal a $500,000 contribution to the Rialto Square Theatre was still in the works on Friday.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said Friday morning that he hoped to have a finished proposal to the Rialto by the end of the day, but he could not be reached later.

The city council on Tuesday added $500,000 to Joliet’s 2017 budget, but the funding is contingent on the two sides working out an intergovernmental agreement.

Details of what Joliet might be looking for have not been disclosed, but Shanahan said that there is no agreement yet.

“Any agreement has to be approved by the council in public,” he said. “So if there is an agreement between the city and the Rialto, the council will have to approve it.”

The Rialto sent a proposed intergovernmental agreement to the city at the end of November, hoping to satisfy concerns that appeared to be blocking any city funding for the theater.

Councilman Pat Mudron on Friday said he believed details of a counterproposal were being negotiated with the Rialto’s attorney.

But, he said, council members have made clear that they are not likely to go along with a four-year agreement.

Other issues, he said, are the number of shows the Rialto would stage, as well as whether VenuWorks would re-

main as the management company for the theater. The term of the agreement, number of shows, and theater management were discussed at a special council meeting earlier this month.

Rialto officials had proposed twostaged funding in any given year based on the Rialto’s ability to state an undetermined number of shows. The proposal called for the city to provide $250,000 at the start of 2017 and the other $250,000 later in the year if the Rialto

delivered a targeted number of shows.

Interim general manager Timothy Berry had suggested using 40 shows a year as a target, which some council members said was too low.

Berry described the target as a low number that he believed the Rialto would be able to exceed.

Berry is a VenuWorks employee who arrived in September when the company took over Rialto management.

VenuWorks does not have a contract beyond the end of the year, and company officials have said their willingness to stay depended on the $500,000 funding from the city and the Rialto’s ability to pay off old bills that were approaching $600,000.

VenuWorks has booked two shows for January and February, and the company expects to stage those shows whether or not it remains as Rialto manager, Berry said.

On Friday, Berry said he was still waiting to hear what was likely to be included in the intergovernmental agreement.

Asked whether VenuWorks would be managing the theater after Jan. 1, he said, “The truthful answer is I really don’t know. I’m still awaiting further notice.”

Former state rep fired from Department of Corrections after allegations

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com Former 75th District State Representative John Anthony was fired Dec. 7 from his position at Illinois Department of Corrections after allegations emerged from several women who told investigators that Anthony had been saying inappropriate things and touching women at a party.

According to a redacted investigation memo- John randum dated Dec. 16, a Anthony report from a Department of Juvenile Justice employee alleges she was approached by a man wearing a Cubs jacket, who was later identified as Anthony, as she was going outside to smoke. According to the report, the employee stated that the man made comments about her chest and buttocks.

The report reflects the man then stepped to the side of the employee and inappropriately pressed his male body part into her left thigh and licked her neck.

The report further states she asked who he was and he said “John.” When she asked for his last name, he said that didn’t matter. The report also states that, based upon statements from alleged victims who reported that they were not actually assaulted, no statutory offenses could be cited in the investigation.

Another report stated “while on the dance floor, ANTHONY [sic] was trying to ‘squeeze’ in on people dancing and trying to ‘grind’ on people.”

Anthony was assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he was making $10,000 a month after leaving his position as state representative.

Nicole Wilson, media relations with Illinois Department of Corrections, confirmed previously by email that “John Anthony’s employment with the Illinois Department of Corrections ended Wednesday, December 7th.”

The reports also state Anthony has not responded to requests for an interview from investigators.

“The IDOC does not discuss personnel matters and cannot provide any further

information,” Wilson said in the email.

On Friday, she said in an email, “As soon as we learned of these allegations of misconduct, we launched an investigation and took immediate action.”

The corrections department on Friday released records to Shaw Media after a Freedom of Information Act request was filed requesting information about Anthony’s firing, which also included a surveillance video.

Anthony was fired just five days after the Illinois Department of Corrections holiday party at the Wyndham Hotel in Springfield. Records show Anthony made just more than $82,000 this year for his work at both the Department of Corrections and as a state representative.

Anthony, who was appointed to the position of state representative in 2013, announced his resignation from office June 17 of this year for the $120,000-a-year state job.

In one instance, which was caught on a surveillance tape, an Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice employee told investigators she was walking to an exit to go smoke when she was approached

by Anthony, who put his arm around her and asked if she was a corrections employee. He then allegedly made the comments about her chest and buttocks.

Eventually she asked him to leave her alone. That interaction was caught on surveillance video and was subpoenaed by the corrections department for its investigation.

“I am not the only woman this happened to, unfortunately,” the woman wrote in an incident report.

That wasn’t the only reported instance of inappropriate touching that night, according to the records.

Several other women at the party told investigators that Anthony had been inappropriately commenting to and touching them as well. The behavior warranted a talk by another state employee during the party. That discussion happened after a woman reported Anthony had touched her breasts. Anthony then reportedly stated “he had done nothing wrong” and said he was a former state representative and “knew better.”

It’s never too late to help families with gifts, food Center leader: Nonprofit helping people become more ‘self-sufficient’

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Peter Claver Center distributed food, gifts and toys this week as part of an annual effort to help people in need.

Theresa Ellis was one such person who was at the center searching for gifts for her son and grandchildren.

She asked the nonprofit organization’s volunteer Harriet Goody if they had anything for her granddaughter.

“You don’t have stuff for, like, little girls, do you?” Ellis asked.

Goody rummaged through the boxes of donated gifts and found a pink shirt and pants, asking Ellis whether they would fit her granddaughter.

“That’s OK. She can grow into it,” she said.

Ellis was one of many who were able to receive a bag full of Christmas gifts and box of food from the center, which offers several education and recreation programs, such as kickbox-

Goody said that when people sign up for the center’s Thanksgiving distribution, they’re automatically signed up for its Christmas distribution as well.

She said the center receives donations from local businesses, schools

and churches.

She said the distribution services by the center are important for many people who are unemployed, have no income or are struggling financially.

“A lot of them have kids and they just can’t provide for them and it’s important to have a place like the cen-

ter,” Goody said.

She said about 75 people were served this year for Christmas, but she remembered in the past there were more. Peggy Mitchell, Peter Claver Center president, said she remembered thousands of people in the past came to the center for its distribution.

But those numbers have gone down because other nonprofit agencies in Joliet have helped people as well.

The center has been serving the Will County region for more than 50 years, according to its website.

Tutoring, job training, computer classes, community services and accredited college correspondence courses “for personal enrichment.”

Goody said all of her children have come to the center for tutoring and the karate helps them and other children in Joliet with self-esteem, exercise and community involvement.

Mitchell said she was appreciative of the people who donated for the Christmas drive.

She said one of the goals of the center is to make people self-sufficient.

“Like they say, you teach a man how to fish, he can feed himself every day. What we’re trying to do is make sure we get them self-sufficient,” Mitchell said.

Mallory: Were you planning on running for Jim Racich another term in April?

Racich: No, I wasn’t.

We thought about it, but this opportunity arose very quickly.

We decided to buy it. It’s somewhat in demand, and we like the area. We like Joliet. I was born and raised in Joliet.

My wife was also.

One good thing is I’m still in the Plainfield Park District, Plainfield Public Library District and Plainfield School District 202.

Mallory: When did you realize you would have to resign from the board?

Racich: It wasn’t a position of having to resign.

My wife and I purchased property in Joliet, a townhouse, and we’re selling our home in Plainfield very soon. We also have a condo in Sarasota, Florida.

It’s always easy to say and difficult to do – but you gotta know when it’s time to downsize. Either you make the plans or somebody makes them for you. We don’t need a big house anymore.

We found a real nice townhouse in Joliet. And I didn’t want to be gone for three months in Florida and not represent the board.

I would feel guilty for not fulfilling my civic duty. I wouldn’t be able to fulfill it in Florida.

Mallory: Were you unable to find a townhouse in Plainfield?

Racich: I’ve talked about it a number of times in board meetings. There are no downsized homes for the community in Plainfield.

We looked for a downsizing to accommodate our lifestyle, but it’s impossible in Plainfield.

Plainfield is not offering that. When developers came in, I’d ask, “When are you going to offer that type of thing?”

Will County plans several new projects in 2017 Safety, transportation continue as focal points

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With so much going on in Will County, it’s difficult for officials to settle on the three top projects of 2017.

Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, and Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., D-Elwood, thought ahead to 2017, a year when several capital projects will see significant progress and others will start to take shape.

At the forefront of both Moustis’ and Walsh’s minds is the new Will County Public Safety Complex. The $30 million state-of-the-art building will be home to the Will County Sheriff’s Office,

emergency dispatchers for agencies throughout the county and emergency administration staff.

Construction started in October.

The complex is on track to open in late December 2017 or early 2018.

It’s the first domino that needs to fall in a series of capital projects the county wants to complete in the next five years.

When the public safety complex is done, the county will start construction on the new $195 million Will County Judicial Complex in early 2018.

Both of these projects are seen as critical enhancements to public safety.

Officials have said the existing sheriff’s office and courthouse were outgrown decades ago.

“We need to have good facilities to serve the public,” Moustis said.

Putnam said. “We collected about 300 presents, about the same amount as last year when we sponsored a family for the first time.”

“Elves” even helped themselves to ornaments on the tree, which mentioned special items on the Otte children’s Christmas wish list: Barbies, iPods and anything Disney princess.

Anytime Fitness held a gift-wrapping session Thursday and then Jeff picked up the presents with a friend from the Joliet Jaguars.

It has already started planning for a new Will County Health Department building that would come third after the new courthouse.

Walsh said another key project is the Interstate 55/Weber Road interchange, which is expected to get going in 2017 – if the state is ready.

“We have our share of the money ready to go,” Walsh said. “I’m hoping the state gets in gear and has their part so we can move forward.”

The project will cost almost $95 million altogether, Walsh said, of which the county has budgeted $18 million for the widening of Weber Road – a county highway. The state will handle the interchange itself, while Bolingbrook and Romeoville are responsible for municipal roads.

Walsh said both the county board and executive’s office will be making trips to Washington, D.C., to show just how dire the transportation situation is on interstates and state highways that go through Will County.

Both the board and executive’s office, with the help of the Will County Friendly Freight Mobility Study, will work to get every federal and state dollar possible to help widen Interstate 80, Interstate 55 and bridges over the Des Plaines River, Walsh said.

“It’s the highest priority issue in the state of Illinois and we’re going to attack it that way,” Walsh said, adding the state legislature must work together to get a budget in place. “The governor has talked about a capital bill in the neighborhood of $3 billion that I think we would be right in line for.”

Moustis wants to continue pushing for legislation that mandates underground water monitoring at stone quarries. Will County has been unsuccessful in this effort so far, but Moustis said the county seems to be the only one pushing the issue.

He said so-called “clean” construction debris is being dumped into the county’s many quarries. Officials say some of it comes from Cook County.

“It’s a curious thing,” Moustis said. “There’s all these hoops to jump through with landfills and the monitoring of water for landfills, but yet we’re just letting people dump into quarries.”

Moustis is fearful of water contamination, as much of the county relies on groundwater.

JOLIET – A pizza deliveryman was robbed Thursday night in Joliet by two men who may have held a gun to his head.

The 20-year-old victim was sent at 8:15 p.m. to an address in the 100 block of Wilcox Street, but no one answered the door when he arrived.

“A man came from around the side of the house and said he was the one who ordered the pizza, but when the deliveryman approached him, another man came up from behind him,” Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said. “Although the victim did not turn around, he believed the object the man was holding to his head was a gun.”

The robber demanded money. When the driver gave him the small amount he had, he was struck once in the back of the head, Roechner said.

The suspects fled from the scene and the victim returned to his business and called police. He was later taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center to treat the cut to his head.

The man who told the driver he’d placed the order was described as a black man with a skinny build who was 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was wearing black clothing.

JOLIET – Joliet police said a man driving in a car was shot and killed and then slammed into another vehicle Friday.

Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said police got a call at 2:26 p.m. Friday regarding a two-car accident in the area of Ingalls Avenue and Broadway Street.

He said that when officers arrived, they found a male victim in his early 20s in the vehicle and realized he had been shot.

Roechner said the man had been shot in the head. The victim was rushed to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and he was pronounced deceased at 3:55 p.m.

On Saturday, the victim was identified as 24-year-old Brian D. Byrd of Joliet. A preliminary autopsy ruled that Byrd suffered gunshot wounds in an apparent homicide.

Roechner said the victim had been traveling south on Broadway Street toward Ingalls Avenue and then was shot. The victim’s car then veered into another car traveling in the northbound lane of Broadway Street. Roechner said the driver in the other vehicle had suffered no injuries.

Joliet police are still investigating the shooting and asking anyone with information to contact them.

She was forced to stand because Anthony was “basically dragging her,” according to the state records. She told him to get away from her but he continued to dance with her, noting that her blouse appeared to be falling off, the report said.

Another woman said he came up to her from behind when she was sitting in a chair and put his arms around her and around her breast. When he did let go, he brushed against her breast. She said she didn’t know if it was intentional, but that it was “uncomfortable,” the report said.

Guests at the party said Anthony “acted intoxicated,” although they did not see him with a drink in his hand all night.

The corrections department on Friday said an investigation was launched and “immediate action” was taken as soon as they learned of the allegations of misconduct.

In a statement, the governor’s office applauded the corrections department for the quick action.

“Our administration does not tolerate this type of behavior,” spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said. “The Department of Corrections did the right thing by taking immediate action.”

RUDY ANDERSON Rudy Anderson, age 68, of Gardner, formerly Coal City and Wilmington, passed away December 21, 2016.

Rudolph was a son of the late Gerald and Genevieve (Malnar) Anderson. He attended Sacred Heart School in Joliet and was a 1969 graduate of Wilmington HS. Rudy retired from Caterpillar in Joliet after 32 years of service, and was a member of Lake Point Club in Wilmington.

Survivors include his wife, Jan (nee Bowden); children, Brandy (Pete) Fleming of Burlingame, CA, Cathi (Carl) Matney of Seneca, Kimberly (Richard) Reeder of Coal City and Jennifer (Paul) Thompson of Gardner; (11) grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, Gerald (Jan) Anderson of VA and; sisters, Maureen Berdisof Joliet and Kathleen Kelly

(Danny Lawless) of Wilmington; sister-in-law, Peggy Bowden of WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation and video tribute will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty St. in Gardner (815-237-2526).

VERNA M. BARNEY Verna M. Barney (Shalka), age 89, of Lockport passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice House in Joliet.

Janet R. Hintz (nee Garavalia), age 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home with her family by her side.

Born November 25, 1939 in Joliet, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Josephine (nee Paone) Garavalia. She was a beautician and a homemaker. Janet was a caring and giving person, always helping others. She loved working in the kitchen at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and serving meals for the needy at Shepherd’s Table. She loved baking her Christmas breads and cookies, crocheting and crafts, gardening and keeping a spotless home. She enjoyed the peace and quiet during their summer vacations at their cottage in Wisconsin.

Loving mother of Judith (Jeffrey) Wiedmeyer, Susan (James) Mammosser, and Brian (Kim) Hintz; grand-mother of Alan and Amanda Wiedmeyer, Nicholas and Rachel Mammosser, Abby, Tony and Samantha Hintz; one great-grandchild, Kylee; and sister, Norma (the late John) Airola. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family survive.

His brother-in-law, Howard Dixon of Bettendorf, IA. and his children, Susan Dixon and her daughter, Sara, Sharon (Bill) Teager and their children, Nathan & Kaitlyn. Bill was preceded in death by Valerie, his beloved wife of 65 years. His parents, Louis and Margaretta Jacques and his sister, Beverly Taylor and her husband Howard.

Bill was born on November 28, 1928, in Joliet, the son of Louis and Margaretta (nee Brown) Jacques.

He married Valerie Ellen Adams on May 9, 1951 in Joliet. Bill graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1946; attended Joliet Junior College, then the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign graduating in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering. He became a proud member of the Illinois chapter of Acacia Fraternity while at U of I. Bill then served in the US Army between 1951 and 1953 and is a Korean War Veteran. He married Val, his high school sweetheart, while on a short leave and they made their first home in Texarkana, TX. He was employed by the Commonwealth Edison Co. beginning in 1950 as a Field Engineer. He retired in 1989 as the Superintendent of Meter Systems after 38 years of service. Bill was a longtime civic and educational volunteer. He was active on his high school class reunion committee for decades, a board member of two homeowner’s associations and a leader of the referendum committee which funded the construction of Troy Cronin School. He also was a Joliet West Band Booster, serving as president for one year, and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Joliet.

He dearly loved his family and especially found much joy following the activities of his ten grandchildren. Bill took great pleasure in being a husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling, family vacations, wood-working and home improvement projects. His family would like to extend a special thanks to Amy Buza, Emma Stark and the rest of the FirstLight Homecare staff, and to Joliet Area Community Hospice for the kind and compassionate care given to Bill.

Millions of people cross borders in the 26-country Schengen travel zone every day, thanks to a 31-year-old system encompassing nearly 400 million people that has dramatically boosted trade and job prospects across the world’s largest collective economy.

It’s a pillar of a system designed to prevent new world wars – a system that’s under growing strain. While EU countries debated over how to manage an influx of migrants last year, eastern nations rebuilt fences and exposed EU weaknesses.

The German far right is insisting on closing the country’s borders. Merkel’s conservatives are suggesting “transit zones” to hold migrants at the borders while their identities are confirmed, and making it easier to hold people in pre-deportation detention.

Berlin truck attacker Amri is a painful example of how Islamic extremists have used Europe’s open borders to attack the principles of tolerance they’re meant to epitomize.

After migrating illegally from Tunisia in 2011, he was imprisoned for burning down a migrant detention center in Italy. When freed, attempts to deport him to Tunisia failed for bureaucratic reasons. He subsequently traveled to Switzerland and then Germany, where he apparently fell under the influence of a radical network accused of recruiting for the Islamic State group.

Although Germany rejected his asylum application last summer and flagged him as a potential terror threat, authorities patiently waited for Tunisia to produce the required paperwork before deporting him.

And just as the deportation was being finalized Monday, Amri is believed to have hijacked a truck and rammed it into holiday crowds at a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 and wounding dozens.

He evaded an international manhunt for more than three days, slipping apparently into France – possibly with a pistol in his pocket – and then Italy before stumbling into a standard ID check in suburban Milan, where he died in a police shootout.

Germany, France and Italy have failed to explain how he escaped the dragnet.

Pope celebrates somber Christmas Eve Mass

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis urged Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus by thinking about the plight of today’s children, bemoaning how some must escape bombs or flee in migrant boats and how others are prevented from being born at all.

Francis celebrated a somber Christmas Eve Mass in a packed St. Peter’s Basilica, processing to the altar behind cardinals draped in golden vestments as the Sistine Chapel choir sang “Gloria” and the church bells rang out across Rome.

Francis has spent much of the year denouncing the Islamic extremist violence that has driven Christians from Mideast communities that date to the time of Christ. He also has demanded Europe in particular do more to welcome refugees, saying Jesus himself was a migrant who deserved more than being born in a manger. And he has called out the wasteful ways of the wealthy when children and the poor die of hunger every day.

In his homily, Francis urged his flock to reflect on how children today aren’t

Bond funds will surely perform poorly in a market with rising interest rates, and Apple’s future growth may be disappointing because the company has lost some of its core.

Digital Realty (DLR-$95) is a real estate investment trust. REITs have been laggards since October because investors fear that higher interest rates will infect dividends and earnings growth. Logically, that makes sense; higher rates mean higher borrowing costs, which translate into lower earnings.

Well, I’ve been a serious investor for 54 years and observed that REITs actually perform well during periods

That’s logical, too, because higher rates often follow improving economic growth, which translates into higher occupancy rates, making it easier for REITs to raise rents. Although, in today’s market economy, I’d shy away from hotel REITs, which are facing a glut of new construction plus competition from Airbnb.

And stay away from apartment REITs, especially those that are required to include low-income housing units in their upscale properties to qualify for zoning and mortgage money.

Your broker’s recommendation of Digital Realty seems to be spot on.

DLR owns, acquires, develops and manages technology-related properties, including internet gateway data centers and technology manufacturing facilities. DLR owns 162 properties in 11 countries, spanning four continents, and boasts a 92.5 percent occupancy rate.

The $3.52 dividend, yielding 3.7 percent, has been raised in each of the past 10 years, and revenues have

exploded to $2.1 billion in 2016 from $281 million in 2006. Earlier this year, DLR acquired an $875 million portfolio from Equinix, which included eight high-quality data centers in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

And the 692 clients using these centers are new customers for DLR. DLR continues to see revenue growth on the Continent, even with Britain’s decision to exit the European Union.

Meanwhile, net profit margins have impressively improved in each of the past 10 years, from 7.5 percent in 2006 to an expected 14.3 percent this year; and some analysts expect 18 percent by 2021, when DLR’s revenues may reach $3 billion.

This is a solid growth REIT! Vanguard, American Funds, BlackRock, Fidelity, State Street and Bank of America probably agree, because they own 35 percent of DLR’s 160 million shares. This is a grand issue paying a fine dividend, and Wall Street thinks it could trade at the $130 level in the coming four years. Buy it.

General Dynamics (GD-$175) is a $31 billion aerospace and defense company with 101,000 employees. Its information systems and technology business group provides technologies, products and services that support a wide range of secure mobile commu-

nications systems. Its marine systems group designs, builds and supports submarines and surface ships for the U.S. Navy.

Its combat systems group is a global leader in tracked and wheeled military vehicles, and it also produces high-performance weapons systems and munitions. Finally, GD’s aerospace group has a solid reputation for superior aircraft design, quality, performance and reliability.

All this morphs into potentially impressive revenue and earnings growth. The $3.04 dividend yields 1.9 percent and has been raised in each of the past 18 years. Net profit margins of 9.4 percent are at their highest level, and long-term debt has declined by over 50 percent in the past few years.

Analysts believe that defense spending will be encouraged by the Trump administration, and GD looks to be the best pure-play company among defense contractors, with a return on equity over 25 percent.

Some expect GD to split 3-for-1 in 2017 and foresee shares of the split stock trading between $80 and $85. Buy it.

Wait to hear city’s demands on Rialto

At first glance, Tuesday’s Joliet City Council approval of $500,000 in budgeted funding in 2017 for the Rialto Square Theatre was a positive ending to a topic heavily debated over the past month.

But it’s important to wait to form any conclusions until the details of the city’s demands are revealed when its version of an intergovernmental agreement becomes public. A city attorney said he was still working on that agreement on Friday.

The funding vote came with stipulations. Even though that vote was made by a public body in a public meeting, none of the details of the proposal were ... made public.

At a later point, that actual agreement will also come to a vote. By then, we will know what’s in it.

What’s important is how the Rialto funding matter went from being what Mayor Bob O’Dekirk termed “a public shakedown” to one he described Tuesday night as “fair for the theater” and “good for the city of Joliet.”

The council also decided not to vote on a resolution to seek a change in state legislation to transfer ownership of the Rialto to the city.

So why the huge change of heart?

The budget resolution seemed to be the opposite of what city officials had been saying for the past month, except that the city-proposed terms for an intergovernmental agreement could change that perspective.

When Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said “It’s up to the Rialto now,” that feels purposely vague.

What is up to the Rialto and what there is to decide was not divulged.

The same goes for Councilwoman Jan Quillman saying “We’ll see what happens.”

The council has voted, but the budget can always change.

Now is the time for the council to be transparent, as it prepares to send the agreement to the Rialto for approval.

Now is the time to see exactly what the council voted for when it added $500,000 in Rialto funding back into the 2017 budget.

To the Editor: Climate change is a deeply complex issue that requires responses from different levels. I share the frustration regarding Congress’s slow response.

The current leadership has failed to acknowledge the reality of climate change, much less take the necessary actions to stop it.

But it does not mean our hands are tied. In the next Congress, I will continue to be an advocate for science funding and research, especially technological advancements in green energy.

Right here in Illinois, we have Argonne National Laboratory, which is home to a battery research hub.

The batteries that scientists are developing there will help us adapt our technology to greener, sustainable options so that we can prevent future warming of the planet. This kind of scientific research should be our number one priority.

The good news is that we have seen

progress on the diplomatic front. The Paris Climate Change Agreement was a momentous step forward to combat climate change, and President-elect Trump would be wise to preserve our agreement with the international community.

But our response should not be isolated to high level international agreements. Local participation is more important than ever. We need engaged citizens who are scientifically literate and can ask their representatives at all levels of government to take action.

I was pleased to see such a great turnout at our recent panel on climate change.

Civic participation is one of the first steps everyone can take to combat this threat. Our office plans to hold similar events next year, and I look forward to productive conversations with our communities in the future.

Holiday loafing with potica, the Bears and Blackhawks One of our family’s most revered holiday traditions involves loafing.

For my wife, loafing involves making potica loaves; for me, it’s something else entirely.

Potica, that’s “po-tee-tza” to the uninitiated, is the sacred nut roll of the Slovenians and an integral part of the Christmas. My wife is half Slovenian, while I’m something like a quarter, so potica is in our DNA. The basic pastry consists of sweet yeast dough rolled and stretched out into a thin, table-wide sheet, which is then covered in nut paste and rolled into logs. Typically walnuts are used, mixed with spices like cinnamon and cocoa. Some people use poppy seeds, others add raisins or even fruit. My Aunt Marie used to make a strudel version with apples or cherries, while my mother-in-law had a savory variation that featured a cottage cheese filling.

But while there are a lot of different kinds of potica, there are only two basic shapes: ring or loaf.

My Aunt Teeny would make her poticas in the ring shape, baking them in an angel food cake pan to create a sort of bread ring that stood about seven or eight inches tall. She’d make a dozen or so every holiday and then dole them out to her extended family.

After she passed, my mom took over the operation.

My wife began making poticas more than half a century ago, learning the process from her maternal grandmother, who Sara said baked them every other week for as long as she could remember. Her expertise was in the loaf form, which tends to be more

Either way involves a lot of nuts, like two pounds, and a lot of time.

Time spent mixing the dough, time waiting for it to rise, and time stretching it across the kitchen table until it’s so thin you can read a newspaper through it. Then it’s covered with a mixture of ground nuts, sugar, spices, butter and scalded milk. Finally the whole mess is rolled up into a giant log, chopped up into rings or loaves, and baked.

The whole process takes about five hours per batch. Not that I’ve ever made one personally. No way. Sure, I help with the setup and cleanup. But other than that, I’ve only witnessed the process. And the pain associated when something goes wrong.

Because there’s a lot of things that can go wrong with potica.

1. You need to have a recipe.

Sara’s grandma’s recipe was based on an oral tradition that no one bothered to write down while she was alive. After she passed, Sara’s mother and aunts tried in vain to reproduce it, but the dough never came out right. In desperation, they turned to Sara, who was 11 at the time, for help.

“They were measuring the flour wrong,” she explained to me years later. “Because when Grandma said four cups of flour, she meant four cups from

the white coffee cup she kept above the stove. Which turns out held about a cup and a half.”

They finally got the whole thing sorted out and wrote it all down.

Sara keeps what’s probably the only remaining copy in her recipe box. It’s on three index cards, scribbled across both sides.

I spent the second quarter of the Bears-Packers game washing, scouring, greasing and flouring a half dozen bread pans that somebody, perhaps me, forgot to wash last year.

By 2 p.m., the dough was stretched and covered. By 2:30 p.m. the first batch was popped into the hot oven.

Ten individuals who were state qualifiers from that squad now are hoping to duplicate that feat in the IHSA dual team state finals while competing at Lockport.

Seven of the 10 were honored on Friday as the Porters celebrated senior night. And seven members of that championship team from four years ago also competed for the Porters in their 61-9 SouthWest Suburban Conference victory over Stagg.

The Porters claimed 11 victories to improve to 21-0 on the season. Coach Josh Oster’s squad has won its dual meets by an average margin of 55.7-13.2 and only one opponent, third-ranked Mount Carmel, has lost by fewer than 20 points. For the sixth-straight year under Oster’s guidance, Lockport has captured at least 19 dual-meet victories.

After Lockport placed fourth in 2015 and third a year ago, expectations were naturally very high for the team coming into the season. The Porters haven’t disappointed and have been rewarded for their performance thus far with an 18th-place national ranking from InterMat and a second-place state ranking in Class 3A from Illinois Matmen.

have the same lineup, which is true, and some of that is by design. It’s not like we’re ever battling serious injuries, but we’re also not making things worse when we’re able to sit people when they need to or allow someone to get tested. It’s all in pursuit of the end of the year.

If it captures that, it needs to win one dual meet in a sectional after the individual state finals to advance to the dual team finals for a thirdstraight year.

O’Connor hopes to make more history

Lockport wrestler owns a combined eight state titles, searching for ninth

cherron@shawmedia.com It’s been 36 years since Mark Ruettiger established the standard that only 13 others have been able to achieve since – which is winning four straight IHSA wrestling championships.

But since the standout at Providence and successful coach in the Lincoln-Way school district pulled off the accomplishment, no other wrestler from the area has been able to do so.

Nine individuals have come close, advancing to four straight semifinals. They include Providence’s Don Reynolds (1999-2002), Edwin Cooper (2008-11) and Eddie Klimara (200912); Coal City’s Todd Combes (199497) and Cody Minnick (2012-15); Lincoln-Way Central’s Josh Kratovil (2005-08); Wilmington’s John VanDuyne (2006-09); Lockport’s Jameson Oster (2008-11); and Montini’s KeVon Powell (2009-12), who was from Romeoville. Six members of that group were able to capture two state titles.

But while the current campaign still has over a month left before the postseason begins, the long drought looks like it might finally come to end. Austin O’Connor, who lives in Lockport but goes to St. Rita in Chicago, is moving ever closer to etching his name as a four-timer.

While eight of the state’s 14 fourtime champions have won a title in the state’s largest class, only four have done so in that class for four straight years.

O’Connor hopes to join that elite company, which includes Andrew’s Joey Gilbert (1986-89), Mount Carmel’s Joe Williams (1990-93) and T.J. Williams (1993-96) and St. Rita’s Albert White (2004-07).

Prior to winning Class 3A titles at 106, 132 and 145, O’Connor became just the fourth individual to capture five Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation championships, joining Tony Davis, Israel Martinez and Isaiah White in that company. If he finishes on top of the awards stand again, his total of nine titles will move him one past Martinez and White.

Beside being fourth-ranked in the nation at 152 pounds, he’s topranked in Illinois at that weight. He’s already beaten second-ranked Cole Smith of Providence twice, once by a major decision and then by a pin in the Dvorak and he also defeated third-ranked Brad Gross of Marmion. All but three of his wins this year have been by fall.

O’Connor, who has committed to continue his career and academics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is willing to do whatever it takes to join the distinguished group of four-time champions, which most recently welcomed Dakota’s Josh Alber, Marmion Academy’s Johnny Jimenez and Marmion and

Glenbard North’s Jered Cortez back in 2014.

“I feel good,” O’Connor said last week. “I just want to keep getting wins now so that by the time I get to state, I’ll have a little bit more confidence. I’ve already have beaten most of the guys that I’ll see at state, so hopefully that will hurt their confidence a little. I want to be the first guy to win five grammar school titles and then four IHSA titles. So I’m just going to keep practicing hard and going after it. I feel like I’ve put myself in a good position for this year.”

Although he lives close to Lockport’s East campus, O’Connor opted for the long trip to the South Side each day to attend St. Rita. And he has no regrets about that decision.

“My brother, Michael, went there and then a couple of kids from my grammar school team, like Jake Silzer, went there so I got to know the team real good and I felt comfortable

there. I like it a lot and I’d choose to go there again. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Mike Boyd, who was St. Rita’s first individual state champion in 2001, joined the Mustangs coaching staff this year and is working along with his former teammate, Dan Manzella, who has been O’Connor’s coach throughout his years at the school.

“I’d like to say that he reminds me of myself, but he’s way better,” Boyd said. “I’ve coached high-end athletes at Oak Park and Riverside-Brookfield and never had a kid like that before; he’s something special. Austin is the most ferocious high school wrestler that I’ve ever seen.

“I’m 185 pounds and I have to keep my weight up just to keep up with him. His pace is the highest in high school wrestling. After this he’s not just looking for an NCAA title, but for a world or Olympic championship.

He is nowhere near his best. He loves wrestling.”

Winning titles were Providence Catholic’s Jacob Lindsey (113) and John Nowak (195), Plainfield East’s Michael McGee (120), Bolingbrook’s Dylan Burnoski (126) and St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor (152), who lives in Lockport.

Lindsey won, 9-7, in overtime over Anthony Pisciotta of Timberland, Moussouri; Nowak pinned Crystal Lake Central’s Seamus O’Donnell in 1:25; McGee won 8-4 over Tommy

Hoskins of Xenia Legacy Christian, Ohio; Burnoski claimed a 4-2 win over Aaron Schulist of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; and O’Connor was a 4-2 winner over Nelson Brands of Iowa City West, Iowa.

McGee and Hoskins were both ranked in the top 10 nationally, and O’Connor and Brands were also nationally ranked. O’Connor was recognized as the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler again. This was his fourth-straight title, while McGee won his second in a row.

In the team competition, Mason, Ohio won the title with 202.5 points while No. 5 Providence beat No. 3 Mount Carmel, 194.5-187, for second

place.

A year ago, coach Keith Healy’s Celtics claimed tenth after finishing in 26th place in 2014.

Also for the Celtics, Cole Smith (152) took third, Logan Anderson (220) was fourth, Josh Ramos (132), Dominick Ambrose (138) and Trevor Swier (170) all finished fifth, and Juan Bazaldua (145) placed seventh.

Bolingbrook also received a third from Isaiah Herrera (195) while Plainfield South got fourths from Enzo Silva (106) and Adrian Cervantes (182) and Jake Kendall (138) took sixth place.

The goal is the goal and we’re working on the process every day. The kids are willing to work and are doing the work and it shows. This group likes to have fun, but they’re all business on the mat.”

The Chargers won the opener as Anthony Skalski edged senior Dan Stojsavljevic, 6-3, at 220. But Lockport answered with forfeit wins from Ronald Tucker and Anthony Molton sandwiched around a first-period fall from senior Sal Farbo at 106 to give the hosts an 18-3 advantage.

Stagg’s Domenic Zaccone, a returning placewinner, held off James Pierandozzi, 5-3, at 120 before Matt Kronsbein recorded a fall and senior Dalton Dwyer claimed a 6-2 victory over Mustafa Rushdi at 132 to expand the lead to 27-6.

“This is great,” Dwyer said. “I wrestled with most of these guys in junior high, and in our eighth grade year, we were state champs and we’re kind of hoping to do it again since it’s our last year. It’s just a great feeling to be a part of this and we all just kind of feed off of each other’s energy and make each other better.

“Most of us have been close since we’ve wrestled together since junior high, so it’s just great to be a part of another dynasty type of team. I think that our relationship and how all of us and our coaches are really close and we work really well together. It’s almost like a family.”

Lockport continued rolling along as state-ranked seniors Abdullah Assaf (138) and Brandon Ramos (145) collected pins and state-ranked Baylor Fernandes (152) won a major decision.

After Charger Peter Radev edged Zach Reese, 2-0, at 160, seniors Nicholas Dado (170) and Chandler Proszek (182) recorded falls and senior Payton Fernandes (195) won by forfeit.

“Ever since eighth grade we had the goal in mind that we would take that state championship team and

bring it forward in our senior year,” Proszek said. “We’ve all stayed close and been like a family. We push each other and have some great coaches and just build on that. We have pictures of fourth- and third-place teams on our wall and look to put a first up there.

“We’ve also stayed as a team in the offseason and have just been looking to improve on the small things and eventually that adds up, and it’s the small things that make a big difference. Our

bond is what has given us the drive and the skill set to win. When we go to these next two tournaments, I think that people will be surprised by us and what we bring.”

A day earlier, the Porters beat DeKalb, 60-7. They got pins from Molton (113), Brandon Ramos (138) and Proszek (182) while Matt Ramos (106), Assaf (132), Baylor Fernandes (152) and Tucker (285) won by technical fall and Yousif Salah (220) won a major decision.

Barkley takes big step backward with 5 INTs VIEWS Adam L. Jahns Forget about watching the tape, as coach John Fox suggested. Quarterback Matt Barkley said he’s to blame for everything that went wrong for him Saturday against Washington.

“I feel like on some plays I tried to win the game on that play.”

“I tried to do too Matt Barkley much.”

“I think I was standing in my way today.”

Those are words of a young quarterback who blew a grand opportunity against a mediocre defense to continue to win over a team that has a job opening at quarterback.

Barkley’s struggles in Washington’s 41-21 rout of the Bears overshadow any progress he made since taking over as the starter. It will take a stellar finish next week against the Vikings for that to change.

Making definitive statements about Barkley still remains shortsighted and premature. Five starts don’t make for a complete evaluation.

But Barkley’s naysayers – the ones who consider him a backup at best – have plenty of ammunition after his awful outing against a defense that was ranked 26th coming into Week 16.

Barkley threw five interceptions, and all of them were on him.

There were no second-half heroics, no moral victories for the Bears for him to feel good about after their first four possessions in the second half ended with ghastly interceptions.

In the past two games, Barkley has accounted for nine turnovers, which includes only one fumble. His five interceptions Saturday were the most in a game since Jay Cutler produced the same in a 10-6 loss to the 49ers on Nov. 12, 2009.

“It was a tough one to swallow, another one you’d want to forget,” said Barkley, who completed 24 of 40 passes for 323 yards, two touchdowns and a 62.8 passer rating.

“But there’s a lot to learn from, a lot we did really well in this game. It’s just those glaring mistakes stand out, and

those are the ones that hurt.”

Barkley’s decision-making was extremely suspect. He threw a deep pass to maligned receiver Josh Bellamy over the middle despite triple coverage, and he inexplicably forced a ball to receiver Alshon Jeffery to avoid taking a sack.

Barkley also fired a pass at receiver Cam Meredith despite cornerback Josh Norman being all over him. He overthrew a wide-open Jeffery and later threw behind Jeffery while off his back foot.

All of the above situations resulted in interceptions by Barkley. Norman and cornerback Bashaud Breeland each made two; safety Will Blackmon had one.

“My boys were out there flying around,” receiver DeSean Jackson said of the Redskins’ defense. “A lot of Christmas gifts being thrown in the air.”

Trash talk aside, evaluating Barkley still remains a muddled process.

It would be interesting to see what Barkley could be with an offseason program, training camp and preseason in the books. Barkley was signed to the practice squad Sept. 5 and didn’t practice with the first team until the week

of Thanksgiving.

It would be important to see what Barkley could do if he wasn’t throwing to Bellamy, returner Deonte Thompson or tight end Daniel Brown this much.

Jeffery was suspended for Barkley’s first three starts, and tight end Zach Miller broke his right foot before Barkley took over.

And it would be more compelling if Barkley wasn’t a late-season surprise for a team that’s well out of contention and playing an array of young players.

Much of the buzz about Barkley is rooted in the Bears’ need for a young quarterback to go with their rebuilding efforts.

“He just got out of rhythm a little bit maybe,” said Meredith, who caught a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. “We know that’s not how he is all the time. He’s a steady playmaker.

He’s stepped up and done a lot of good things for us. Everybody has those games. Receivers have drops, defense has missed tackles. He’s just like everybody else.”

Receiver Alshon Jeffery is past the point of being impressed by Howard’s running abilities.

“It ain’t impressing me. We saw it in training camp,” he said. “I mean, he’s

impressing y’all. He ain’t impressing us. It’s something we’ve been seeing since training camp. We just wanted to see what he could do when he gets an opportunity to get the ball.”

Howard needs 61 yards in Minnesota next week to set the Bears’ franchise record for rushing yards by a rookie in a season, passing Matt Forte’s 1,238 in 2008.

Questions arise after Bears lose LB Floyd to another concussion

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Leonard Floyd has provided flashes of hope throughout another lost year for the Bears, showing signs of becoming an effective edge rusher.

There’s now reason for concern as the season winds down.

Floyd was sidelined by a concussion for the second time in a month in the first half of the Bears 41-21 loss to the Washington Redskins on Saturday. That is prompting questions about potential long-term health issues for the rookie linebacker.

“I get concerned about any player that gets injured, not just Leonard,” coach John Fox said. “It is a physical game and injuries are part of it. I don’t want to single one guy out.”

It was unclear exactly when Floyd

got hurt. He was carted off from the sideline early in the second quarter with a towel over his head.

“You feel for your guys. You always want them to be as healthy as they can be,” defensive lineman Akiem Hicks said.

There were questions about Floyd’s size and strength heading into the NFL draft, and he also had surgery on each shoulder during his collegiate career at Georgia. But the Bears loved his athleticism and quickness, and they traded up to grab him with the ninth overall pick.

The early returns have been positive. Floyd, listed at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, is tied with Hicks for second on the team with seven sacks in 12 games.

The 24-year-old Floyd had one of the Bears’ best defensive plays of the season when he sacked Aaron Rodg-

ers, got up and jumped on a fumble in the end zone for his first career touchdown during a 26-10 loss at Green Bay on Oct. 20. He also sacked Blaine Gabbert for a safety in the fourth quarter of a 26-6 win against San Francisco on Dec. 4.

But he might have to sit out of the season finale at Minnesota next weekend after leaving against Washington.

Floyd also was evaluated for a concussion after a scary collision late in a Nov. 20 loss to the New York Giants sent him to the hospital. He was released in time to travel with the team back to Chicago, but missed a game with a neck injury.

Floyd’s absence hurt the Bears’ ability to put pressure on Kirk Cousins, who passed for 270 yards and a touchdown in the Redskins’ victory.

Cousins also rushed for two TDs. The Bears (3-12) had no sacks.

“We’re shooting ourselves in the foot,” linebacker Jerrell Freeman said. “I think that was the biggest problem: knowing the situation, knowing the play, knowing the defensive play and what’s coming out there.”

Beginning with Chris Thompson’s 7-yard touchdown run up the middle in the first quarter, Washington (8-6-1) scored on four straight possessions. Thompson also had a 17-yard touchdown reception on a well-timed screen play, Dustin Hopkins kicked a 29-yard field goal, and Cousins scored on a 9-yard run around the right side.

“Lot of things in that game that we could have done better,” Hicks said.

“Seems to be the story of the year. You have to deal with that and move on.

It’s not the situation we want to be in, and you got to take that one on the chin and keep pushing.”

CHICAGO – Jordan Howard has played the role of silver lining for the Bears, but that doesn’t mean he’s pleased with the label.

“I don’t really care about individual success because we haven’t been winning,” Howard said Saturday after the Bears’ 41-21 loss to Washington at Soldier Field. “At the end of the day, all it comes down to is winning. We haven’t been doing it enough.”

Howard rushed for 119 yards on 18 carries, averaging 6.6 yards an attempt in the loss. With Matt Barkley, the other “positive” during the Bears’ current losing stretch, throwing five interceptions, Howard was the bright spot. Again.

“Pretty much anything we called [worked],” the rookie said. “The O-line, they were getting a great push, staying on their blocks and opening up lanes for me. It was working pretty well.”

Despite that success, the Bears dialed up back-to-back passing plays from Washington’s 4-yard line in the first quarter while trailing, 7-0. Both of Barkley’s passes fell incomplete, and Connor Barth had his field goal blocked.

“It’s never frustrating for me,” Howard said of the play-calling. “I just go with whatever the coach calls, and I always have faith in whatever he calls is going to work.”

Holiday no-shows: A Christmas Eve game for a three-win team meant a lot of empty seats. Officially, the attendance was 39,837 at Soldier Field with 18,116 unused tickets.

“It was tough the way it looked, but at the same time, it was Christmas Eve,” Jeffery said.

The sparsely attended game was the final Bears home game of 2016. They finished the year 3-5 at home after going 1-7 at Soldier Field in 2015.

“It’s really disappointing,” receiver Cameron Meredith said. “The fans expect more. We expect more of ourselves. So you can’t blame them. But there are a lot of positives to look at for this year. We have to focus on that and finish the season strong.”

Injury report: Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd left the game on a cart and did not return. He is in the concussion protocol for the second time in five weeks. Safety Deon Bush (ankle) and tight end Daniel Brown (shoulder) were the other injured players who did not return.

Quick hits: A loss in Minnesota next week would mark the franchise’s lowest win total since the NFL moved to a 16-game season in 1978. ... Meredith led the Bears with nine catches, 135 yards receiving and a touchdown. ... In his return from a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, linebacker Jerrell Freeman led the Bears with nine tackles and one tackle for loss.

Rodgers, Nelson shred Vikings as surging Packers win

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns, Jordy Nelson shredded Minnesota’s secondary for 154 yards and two scores, and the resurgent Green Bay Packers beat the Vikings, 38-25, on Saturday.

The Packers’ fifth-straight win set up a winner-take-all showdown next week with Detroit for the NFC North title. The loss extinguished the Vikings’ faint postseason hopes.

“We’re planning on going to Detroit to win the division,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “Merry Christmas.”

Green Bay (9-6) built a 28-13 lead at halftime, with Rodgers accounting for all four scores. He finished 28 of 38, and shrugged off his right calf injury after scrambling for a 6-yard touchdown late in the second quarter and making a rare Lambeau Leap .

“Once I got moving, I felt like myself,” Rodgers said, adding that the sore calf is getting better.

Rodgers and Nelson connected for scores from 21 and 2 yards in the first half. The receiver found seams in Minnesota’s defense, despite the return of safety Harrison Smith from an ankle injury.

Playing again without running back Adrian Peterson, the Vikings (78) had success through the air. Sam Bradford threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard touchdown pass to Adam Thielen in the second quarter.

But the Vikings made too many other mistakes to catch up to the Packers.

“One time a guy fell down, one time on the deep route to Nelson, (cornerback Xavier Rhodes) pulled off it too soon,” coach Mike Zimmer said about the porous pass coverage. “Trying to think of all of them but, there was a lot.”

Maybe they were sluggish after the team plane got stuck in the grass on

the way to the gate at a Wisconsin airport on Friday night after making a safe landing, forcing a delay of more than five hours.

Whatever the reason, the Vikings will miss the playoffs after a 5-0 start.

Cashing in: The Packers cashed in on two Vikings turnovers in the second quarter with 14 points.

The first came with 9:50 left after center Nick Easton’s bad snap was recovered by Kenny Clark at the Minnesota 42. Three plays later, Rodgers and

Nelson connected on their 2-yard score.

Minnesota was threatening in Packers territory with 1 minute left in the quarter when linebacker Clay Matthews powered past left tackle T.J. Clemmings for a strip sack of Bradford recovered by Mike Daniels at the 46.

Rodgers ran for his score five plays later.

Thielen it: Thielen went big play-forbig-play with Nelson, finishing with 12 catches. The Packers secondary had shaky moments again a week after a porous fourth quarter in a win over the Chicago Bears.

Record: Rodgers and Nelson set a Packers record on their 21-yard score in the first quarter. It was the 58th touchdown for the duo, breaking the tie with the Brett Favre-Antonio Freeman combination. Rodgers threw about a 10-yard pass up the seam to Nelson, who found a soft spot in the zone and then made safety Andrew Sendejo miss on a tackle before lunging forward to get the ball into the end zone.

Clay’s day: Matthews looked like his big-play self for the first time in weeks.

He has been limited since hurting his left shoulder in late November during a win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Packers’ most dynamic pass rusher said during practice this week that he was feeling better and hoped to get more snaps.

The long-haired Matthews made a difference against the Vikings, including the strip-sack of Bradford late in the second quarter, along with two key pass deflections and another pressure by early in the third quarter.

The Associated Press ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Jay Ajayi ran for 206 yards and broke loose for a 57-yarder in overtime to set up Andrew Franks’ 27-yard field goal with 47 seconds left to lead the Miami Dolphins to a 34-31 win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

In winning for the ninth time in 10 games, the Dolphins (10-5) inched closer to their first playoff berth since 2008.

Miami can secure the AFC’s final wild-card berth as early as Sunday if Denver loses to Kansas City.

Denver needs to win its final two games to make the postseason and Baltimore is eliminated from the wildcard race and can only make the play-

offs as the AFC North champion.

The Bills (7-8) were eliminated from contention and extended the NFL’s longest active playoff drought to 17 seasons.

Buffalo’s drought is tied for the fifth longest in NFL history, and the longest since the New Orleans Saints went 20 years before qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 1987.

Ajayi is the fourth player in NFL history to have at least three games with at least 200 rushing yards in a season. Earl Campbell, O.J. Simpson, Tiki Barber are the others.

Franks forced overtime by hitting a career-best 55-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining.

That’s when Tyrod Taylor converted a fourth-and-7 by completing a pass to Charles Clay in the end zone.

The Bills squandered a scoring chance on the first possession of overtime when Dan Carpenter missed wide right from 45 yards with 10:03 remaining. Carpenter also missed wide right on a 46-yard attempt in the first quarter.

Two of Ajayi’s 200-yard games have come against Buffalo. He had a career-best 214 yards rushing and a score in the Dolphins’ 28-25 win over Buffalo at Miami on Oct. 23.

Though the Bills vowed to contain Ajayi, he broke loose on the first play from scrimmage on Miami’s second and final possession of overtime.

With Miami backed up at its 15, Ajayi took the handoff and stiff-armed defensive lineman Leger Douzable at the line of scrimmage in finding a crease off left tackle.

JAGUARS 38, TITANS 17: At Jacksonville, Florida, Blake Bortles’ best game of the season helped the Jaguars end a nine-game losing streak.

Bortles threw for 325 yards and a touchdown, and was on the receiving end of a 20-yard trick play that sealed the win with 5:25 remaining. Rookie Jalen Ramsey returned an interception 30 yards on the ensuing play to set off a raucous – and long-awaited – celebration in Jacksonville.

Bortles and the Jaguars (3-12) played inspired football and won for the first time this season at EverBank Field.

Maybe they rallied around interim coach Doug Marrone. Maybe they played for ultra-popular ex-coach Gus Bradley, who was fired six days earlier.

Maybe they just wanted to avenge an embarrassing loss to the Titans (8-7) on national television in late October.

It was a debacle for the Titans, who had won three in a row and needed a victory to set up an AFC South title game next week against Houston. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota appears to be done for the season, leaving late in the third quarter with an air cast on his right ankle.

FALCONS 33, PANTHERS 16: At Charlotte, North Carolina, the Falcons are back on top of the NFC South, capturing their first division title since 2012.

Matt Ryan threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns, Tevin Coleman had 135 yards from scrimmage, including a pivotal 55-yard fourth-quarter TD run.

The Falcons then had to wait about 3½ hours to celebrate when the Saints defeated the Buccaneers to seal Atlanta’s first playoff appearance in four years.

The Panthers (6-9) were officially eliminated from playoff contention after making the Super Bowl last season.

Ryan torched the Panthers for the second time this season. He threw for 503 yards and four TDs in Atlanta’s Week 4 win over Carolina at the Georgia Dome, a victory that set the stage for the Falcons’ playoff push.

SAINTS 31, BUCCANEERS 24: At New Orleans, Mark Ingram rushed for two-touchdowns and a game-sealing first down in the final minutes.

The Buccaneers (8-7) needed a win to keep pace with Green Bay (9-6) for the final NFC wild-card spot, but couldn’t keep up with the Saints’ explosive offense. And their loss handed the NFC South to Atlanta, while giving the New York Giants a wild-card berth.

Drew Brees was 23 of 34 for 299 yards and a touchdown for New Orleans (7-8), which gained 417 total yards and did not have a turnover against with 26 takeaways – including three interceptions of Brees in the clubs’ previous meeting two weeks earlier.

This time, it was New Orleans’ defense producing turnovers; Jairus Bryd intercepted Jameis Winston twice. The first takeaway set up Ingram’s second TD, and the second stalled a promising

Bucs drive into Saints territory.

Now Tampa Bay must win the season finale and hope for losses by Washington and Green Bay next week. If that happens, a complicated tie-breaker based on strength of victories will decide the final playoff spot between the Bucs and Packers.

RAIDERS 33, COLTS 25: At Oakland, California, Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injured right leg.

Carr’s injury leaves a dark cloud over the best season for the Raiders (123) in 14 years.

Oakland clinched its first playoff berth since 2002 last week and can win the AFC West and earn a first-round bye by winning next week in Denver or if Kansas City loses one of its final two games.

But that is all secondary to Carr’s health. The third-year quarterback has led a resurgence in Oakland with 28 TD passes and seven fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

Now the Raiders may have to prepare for life with Matt McGloin at quarterback. Carr got hurt with Oakland leading 33-14 early in the fourth quarter when he was sacked by Trent Cole.

Carr stayed on the ground for several minutes in pain as trainers came out to treat him.

With the crowd chanting “M-V-P! M-V-P!” Carr limped off the field without putting any pressure on his right leg. He was then taken away on a cart.

Indianapolis (7-8) will not make the playoffs.

CARDINALS 34, SEAHAWKS 31: At Seattle, the Arizona Cardinals continue to give the Seattle Seahawks headaches at home. This time, it will likely end up costing Seattle a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Chandler Catanzaro hit a 43-yard field goal on the final play.

Seattle rallied from a 31-18 deficit, scoring two touchdowns inside the final three minutes to pull even 31-31. Jimmy Graham had a 37-yard touchdown catch and Paul Richardson’s 5-yard TD with 1:06 left tied it. Steven Hauschka missed the extra point that could have given Seattle the lead, but it didn’t matter in the end.

Arizona went 50 yards in the final minute and Catanzaro’s kick was good, delivering a huge blow to Seattle’s chances at the No. 2 seed in the NFC. It was the Seahawks’ first home loss this season; all NFL teams have now been beaten in a home game.

49ERS 22, RAMS 21: At Los Angeles, Colin Kaepernick threw a 10-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds remaining and scrambled for a go-ahead 2-point conversion as the 49ers overcame a 14-point deficit to end a 13-game losing streak.

Kaepernick rolled to his right while looking for a receiver before tucking the ball and barreling into the end zone.

That gave the 49ers a sweep in the renewal of the in-state rivalry with the Rams’ return to Los Angeles this season.

Kaepernick threw for 257 yards, two touchdowns and one interception and rushed for a touchdown for the 49ers (2-13).

CLEVELAND – The Browns are winless no more.

Cleveland avoided that fate Saturday by beating the San Diego Chargers, 20-17, for their first victory in more than a year. San Diego’s Josh Lambo missed a 45-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Browns (1-14) their first win in 377 days.

When the kick sailed right, Cleveland’s small crowd erupted in celebration and Browns players poured off their sideline as if they had just won the Super Bowl.

The Browns avoided becoming the second team to go 0-15, and no longer have to worry about joining the 2008 Detroit Lions as the only teams to lose all 16 games.

Cleveland built a 10-point lead in the third quarter and hung on – defensive tackle Jamie Meder blocked a potential tying field goal with 3:49 left – to give coach Hue Jackson his first win with the Browns.

The win also snapped Cleveland’s 17game losing streak dating to last season.

The Chargers (5-10) lost their fourth straight and one that could sting for a while.

PATRIOTS 41, JETS 3: At Foxborough, Massachusetts, Tom Brady passed for 214 yards and three touchdowns, and the Patriots moved a step closer to securing home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

The Raiders beat the Colts Saturday so New England will have to hold off on becoming the AFC’s top seed.

Malcolm Butler added two interceptions and a fumble recovery , and LeGarrette Blount had a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.

New England (13-2) took advantage of New York miscues all day, scoring on three of its first four possessions.

The Jets (4-11), who have lost six of seven, had four turnovers.

The only really good piece of news for the Jets came before the game, when Todd Bowles rejoined the team and coached from the sideline a day after a medical scare sent him to the hospital.

Timely title for many

Cubs won it all just in time for longtime fans

The Associated Press CHICAGO – At the end, not much was getting through to Helen Weithman. The memories she collected over 98 years were slipping away.

When Kathleen Strobel talked to her, she could tell by the blank look on her mom’s face that she didn’t understand a lot of what she was saying.

Then came the World Series.

“She really came alive when it started and they had the Cubs games on,” Strobel said. “When we started talking about it she said, ‘They haven’t won since I was born.’ It was probably the last thing we shared with her because she died on November 29th.”

Strobel hasn’t wondered if the hope of finally witnessing her Cubbies win it all added a little time to her mom’s life. Studies have long suggested no one can will themselves to stay alive just a little bit longer to reach a milestone event such as a birthday, holiday, wedding or World Series.

Try telling that to the families of some Cubs fans who are convinced their loved ones hung on to see the team win its first Series in 108 years.

Robert Matijevich doesn’t know much about all the studies. He just knows what he saw at the North Chicago home where he lived with his father.

“He was really going downhill but in the World Series he was eating better, sleeping more,” Matijevich said of his 88-year-old father, John. “When the Cubs won, he said, ‘They did it in my lifetime.’ ” He went to bed and died that night.

Did the older Matijevich stick around long enough to see the Cubs win the World Series?

“I really think that was the reason, I really do,” his son said.

In 2004, as Boston was basking in an at-long-last World Series championship, statisticians at Ohio State University threw water on all those stories about dying fans who kept themselves alive long enough to witness the first Red Sox title in 86 years.

Their study concluded there was no evidence that cancer patients willed themselves to live just a bit longer.

“You’d hear it all the time, that a nurse said so-and-so hung on until after Christmas, and it’s a nice story,” said the study’s co-author, Dr. Donn

Young, a now-retired researcher at the university’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. What is more likely, he said, is explained in another study that found people remember positive events more than they do negative ones – meaning that nurses and other caregivers are more likely to recall those patients who made it through the holidays than those who didn’t.

Still, Young acknowledged that some of the ailing might eat better, more faithfully take their medicine

and get plenty of rest in the hopes of reaching a milestone. And there is no underestimating the value of the smiles and the general bliss for Cubs fans the night of Nov. 2 when the World Series ended safely in Anthony Rizzo’s glove during an epic Game 7 in Cleveland. There is no forgetting that, at least for a little while, the distraction that the Cubs provided to those who had just hours or days to live.

That showed up in the death notices – long a place where the families

have included loved ones’ allegiance to the Cubs – in the days after the Series.

The Cubs’ win “was one of his happiest moments as he went through treatments and rehabilitation” for a nerve disease, read the death notice for the Rev. Patrick Cecil, a Catholic priest in Chicago, who died Nov. 14.

“He will be sharing that victory with those from the Cecil family that have preceded him.”

It was a similar story for Marvin Peterson.

“He was thinking the (National League) pennant would be the only thing he’d get,” Margaret Peterson of suburban Bloomingdale said of her 82-year-old husband, who was dying of cancer at the time.

Instead, he watched on TV as the Cubs beat the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, the Indians in the World Series and then celebrated with millions of fans at a massive parade and rally.

At his bedside a few days before he died Nov. 18 was a gift from his sonin-law: a replica of the World Series trophy.

“It gave him a lot of joy,” his wife said. “He was so thrilled after all those years of waiting.”

And that, she said, is helping her get through this first holiday season without her husband, who even at 82 could recite the names of the starting lineup of the 1945 Cubs. “I am so happy he got to experience that,” she said.

Roger Sieben could see what the win meant to his 105-year-old mother, Suzanne. Weeks afterward, she remembered only bits and pieces about the World Series victory party at her nursing home in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the Cubs cake, the staffer dressed like the late Cubs announcer Harry Caray and the singing of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” But the woman who lived most of her life about a mile from Wrigley Field, close enough to hear the roar of the crowd if the wind was blowing just right, could remember with absolute clarity that the Cubs had won it all.

Then, after getting a letter from the hospice about this 105-year-old Cubs fan, the team sent up a package containing a shirt, decals, a photograph of the late Cubs great Ernie Banks and a note thanking her.

“When the package came she was just overwhelmed that they would remember her,” her son said. “That was one of the last memories she would have.”

She died Dec. 5.

Coming home was priceless to Campbell

mlazerus@suntimes.com For some players, the NHL’s threeday Christmas break can be almost as tiring as the regular season – a game the night before, a flight from their in-season home to their actual home Christmas Eve, the usual fun and aggravation of the holiday, then a flight back for a game Dec. 27.

All Brian Campbell had to do this year was make his usual 25-minute commute Friday night from the United Center to his home in Western Springs.

That, in essence, is what Campbell paid for when he left millions of dollars on the table in Florida to return to Chicago, his wife’s hometown, and a city that never stopped tugging his sleeve.

“I wouldn’t change anything at all,” Campbell said. “I’m lucky. I can’t put a price tag on how happy we are as a family. Money – I’ve been lucky in my career to play a long time and make some money. I was in a situation where I was able to do something like this, and I’m lucky to be in this situation.”

lion over the past seven seasons, and is still earning $2.25 million this season – a $1.5 million salary and a $750,000 games-played bonus that he’s already reached. So he hardly took a vow of poverty to rejoin the Blackhawks, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2010. But that massive payday gave him the flexibility to give the Hawks a significant hometown discount – and, yes, Campbell does consider Chicago his permanent hometown these days – over the summer.

The perpetually cap-strapped Hawks never could match the kind of contract the Florida Panthers were offering, so the two sides made it work.

Campbell isn’t the first veteran to do so. Brad Richards came to Chicago on a $2 million deal in 2014, won the Stanley Cup, and then was off to Detroit.

But Campbell’s situation is different.

This isn’t some last-gasp Cup-chasing quest. Campbell is 37 but is in excellent shape, is still playing well and likely has a few more years left in him.

So the question is, what happens next? Campbell’s deal is for one year only. And with a stagnant salary cap and Artemi Panarin’s contract extension (and potential bonuses) looming larger with every one-timer he takes,

the Hawks figure to be even shorter on cap space than ever next season. Can the two sides somehow make it work again?

Well, Campbell said he’s only focusing on the present. But he wasn’t exactly coy about his future, either.

“I want to play,” he told the SunTimes. “I don’t see myself stopping.

And I don’t want to go anywhere, that’s for sure.”

The Hawks would love to keep him around, too, if they can somehow make the money work. Campbell has been everything the Hawks hoped he would be – a legitimate top-four defenseman who has helped turn their biggest weakness into one of their biggest strengths.

Campbell spent much of the season on the top pairing with Duncan Keith and now is back on his preferred left side on the second pairing with Brent Seabrook. He’s gobbling up 19 minutes a night, hasn’t missed a game, is a positive possession player, has chipped in three goals and seven assists, has stabilized the second power-play unit and has fit right into a dressing room he never wanted to leave in the first place.

“It was a great fit for us,” Hawks

coach Joel Quenneville said. “The price tag had to be accommodating, [so] we were fortunate that he chose to come back with us. We have a lot of versatility with him being in our defense group. We know how important that is. We felt we were a little light in that area last year. [He] added that experience, and is everything you look for in a defenseman.”

Seabrook called it “a testament to the organization we’ve got here” that Campbell so badly wanted to come back. And that’s certainly part of it, as Campbell watched with “frustration” as the Panthers retooled a division-winning team and jettisoned many players and staffers he respected in an effort to remake the team.

But more than anything, it was Chicago itself that drew Campbell back.

He never sold his home. He returned every summer. Even with his wife and two young daughters with him in South Florida, it always felt more like an extended business trip than home.

Now he’s truly home. In Chicago, on the ice, in the room. And for Campbell, that’s priceless.

“I’m smiling now, I’m happy,” he said. “I don’t look back. I know I made the right decision.”

No single reason for Bulls’ failures

The veteran made that clear after the 103-91 loss to the Hornets on Friday in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the Bulls now entering a Christmas Day game in San Antonio and sitting with a mediocre 14-15 record.

“It’s just not enough consistency,” Wade told reporters. “We have to get to the point where we decide, as a team, to be more consistent in what we do – in our coverages, in the way we run the offense.

“We’re not going to make shots all the time. But we have to shoot our shots. We have to get back in transition and make them see as many defenders as possible. But defensively we just got to ... we make small mistakes. And those small mistakes in this league can tear you up.”

So it’s small mistakes?

That’s the latest excuse of the week for a Bulls team that went from feelgood story to start the season to the same unlikeable brand of basketball that was on display far too many times last year.

And there’s no Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah or Pau Gasol to point the finger at this time. The front office made sure of that. They’ve already blamed a former coach, a head trainer and then the roster, changing up all three in their house of no mirrors.

According to one NBA scout who has seen the Bulls “at least 15 times” since the start of last season, there is not one explanation for the failure.

There’s many.

First of all, the offensive sets from last season have been completely changed with this year’s group.

According to the scout, coach Fred Hoiberg tried to use many of the sets he used at Iowa State early last season

before quickly discovering that they didn’t have the personnel to run those, as well as the trouble Rose had understanding the concepts.

“As the season went on, [Hoiberg] had no choice but to start scrapping those early sets,” the scout said. “They started to add more basic NBA sets, but it just never looked comfortable.”

Hoiberg admittedly had his staff break down all the film on Wade’s 201516 season with Miami, as well as film on Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez once they were added to the roster last summer, picking out the sets that seemed to offer up the best results.

To Hoiberg’s credit, as well as the staff that sifted through all that film, the sets they started the season with were “sound and built to win games,” the scout said.

“Now, everything looks loose compared to early on in the season,” the scout said.

A big reason for that crisp look to be gone is the fact that at 34 years old, Wade’s participation in practice over the last month has been minimal.

According to one player, Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson have also been given a smaller practice workload, thanks to a front office that decided three seasons ago that health over practice time was the priority. A lack of rhythm has been the result.

Some other offensive problems that the scout noticed were “they go low early, and even if it’s working they stray away from it,” “the bigs off the bench look confused,” and “Niko (Mirotic’s) offense isn’t worth his (poor) defense.”

As far as the defense, well, there’s no easy fix there.

“They blow so many assignments,” the scout said. “I don’t know if it’s communication, prep or concept, but they have to cover up for one another so often that no one seems to be in position.

It’s a mess.”

Bolingbrook Police, Meijer Store team up for ‘Shop with a Cop’ The HERALD-NEWS BOLINGBROOK – The Bolingbrook Police teamed up with Meijer Store in the 18th annual “Shop with a Cop” event on Dec. 15.

The event was hosted at the Meijer located at 755 E. Boughton Road, Bolingbrook.

Meijer corporate officials attended the 2015 event where they witnessed the interaction and success of the program within the Bolingbrook community. Their donation was increased this year, as they supplied $75 gift cards to each participant. This year’s event treated approximately 150 Bolingbrook children.

Meijer Store Director Donald Wil-

liams and his assistant, Pam Willis, played instrumental roles. They also provided free gift wrapping, food and drinks for all of the participants.

Bolingbrook Director of Public Safety Director Tom Ross and Deputy Chief Ken Teppel led numerous Bolingbrook Police Department employees, their family members and Explorer Post No. 38.

In 1999, Mayor Roger Claar and the village trustees brought the first Meijer store in the Chicago area to Bolingbrook.

They continue to support numerous community outreach programs such as this one.

JOLIET – More than 60 of the Joliet area unsheltered homeless came through the Joliet Public Library’s Ottawa Street Branch to attend the recent Preparing for Winter: Survival Giveaway event.

The event offered several tables full of winter supplies donated from all corners of the community.

The library hosted the event in partnership with the Consumer Committee of the Will County Continuum of Care, Will County Center for Community Concerns, Cornerstone Services, Holy Family Parish, Will County Community Development Division, the City of Joliet, United Way of Will County, Habitat for Humanity, the Veterans Assistance Commission, Catholic Charities, the Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Joliet Police Department.

Megan Millen, executive director of the Joliet Public Library, was

grateful to those who came together during this time. Denise Zielinski, community engagement officer at the Joliet Public Library, helped organize the event and suggested the library as the location.

Popular items were backpacks, hand warmers, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, blankets and even camping gear such as tents, tarps and sleeping bags. Also available were bags of food, bottles of water and personal items.

The Will County Center for Community Concerns also was available to offer assessment services for housing.

Staff from the library, WCCCC, Will County, Catholic Charities, the Veterans Assistance Commission and Cornerstone Services, and members of the homeless community helped manage the event and ensured individuals received the specific supplies they needed.

Check lead paint in older homes Dear Doctor: We live in a charming older home, but some of the paint looks old. How worried should I be that it might contain lead?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be concerned about the possible presence of lead-based paint in your home. Even in small quantities, lead is toxic to humans and animals. Children younger than 6 and pregnant women particularly are susceptible to the ill effects of lead.

Children who have ingested lead may suffer from hyperactivity, lowered IQ, anemia, impaired growth and hearing problems. In pregnant women, the presence of lead can slow the growth of the fetus, cause nerve or brain damage to the unborn child and even lead to premature birth.

Long-term exposure to lead can cause serious physical and neurological problems in adults as well. High levels of the toxic metal are associated with damage to the kidneys, brain, bone marrow and blood, as well as fertility problems and nerve disorders.

If your home was built before 1978, the Environmental Protection Agency warns yes, there’s a strong chance it contains leadbased paint. Homes built after 1978, the year a federal ban on lead-based paints went into effect, are considered to be safe.

The probability of finding lead-based paint in your home increases along with its age. Homes built between 1960 and 1977 have a 24 percent chance of containing lead-based paint. That number spikes to 69 percent for homes built between 1940 and 1959. Homes that predate 1940 have a whopping 87 percent probability of containing lead-based paint.

So are you and your family at risk?

Fortunately, even if you’ve found lead-based paint in your home, there’s good news.

When it’s intact and in good condition, lead-based paint usually is not harmful,

Problems arise because as it ages, leadbased paint chips, cracks, peels and crumbles. The resulting particles mix easily with household dust and get distributed throughout the house.

Since kids tend to explore the world with their mouths, the chance they’ll ingest lead from older paint that is deteriorating is high.

Sweeping, vacuuming or even a breeze from an open window can make lead-filled dust go airborne where your family and pets can inhale and absorb it.

To know whether or not the paint you are worried about contains lead, you can buy a test kit at a hardware store or hire a certified inspector. If you plan to remove the paint or to do major renovations, it’s important to use a certified contractor who will know proper abatement procedures.

Federal guidelines recommend children who live in or regularly visit a home with lead-based paint be tested for lead levels in their blood. For children, this test is performed at 12 months of age. The health effects of lead are not reversible, so vigilance is your best protection.

Woman’s use of free guest pass to gym isn’t working out Dear Abby: I go to the gym regularly. Part of my membership includes a free guest pass. Working out with others can be much more fun and a really good motivator. I have a friend who has taken me up on my offer to join me at the gym. She goes with me two to four times a week.

Initially, I made the offer to get her going. Never in a million years did I think she’d still be piggybacking off of my membership all these months later. Now that it has become routine, I feel bad saying anything to her. Should I suggest she get her own membership? Food with no nutritional value is consumed each school night, along with bowls of my wife’s homemade ice cream. I know being obese will have lifelong consequences for them.

If she is doing this because of some emotional need of her own, she may need both nutritional and emotional counseling to get past it. A step in the right direction would be for you to involve your kids in family time that includes exercise and encourage them to choose a sport that interests them and to pursue it. If you ask your older daughter, I’ll bet she would be glad to support the idea.

2. How would you bid the NorthSouth hands, given that South opens two clubs, strong, artificial and forcing, and West overcalls five clubs?

3. How would you bid the NorthSouth hands with South the dealer and East-West passing throughout?

4. If West were the dealer with both sides vulnerable, what should he open?

5. Look only at the North hand. a.

South opens one spade, and with the opponents silent, how should North plan the auction? b. West opens one no-trump, and East raises to three notrump. What should North lead?

6. Look only at the East hand.

North opens one no-trump, and South raises to three no-trump. a.

What should East lead? b. What should he lead if West doubles three no-trump? c. West opens two spades, a weak two-bid. After North passes, what should East bid?
