A committee of previous Citizen of the Year recipients selected Von Lunen for the award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions to the community over the course of the recipient’s lifetime.

Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said he was inspired to nominate Von Lunen because he doesn’t seek the limelight, and a lot of people likely don’t realize how much he’s done for the community.

Scheetz said he has come to greatly admire Von Lunen

in the 10 years he has known him through Rotary and the library, where Von Lunen has served as trustee for nearly eight years.

Von Lunen exemplifies the Rotary’s motto “service above self,” Scheetz said, describing him as selfless and “a real giver.”

According to a news release, Von Lunen’s leadership in fundraising with the Rotary Club has helped support numerous local projects and initiatives. The list includes the Peg Bond Center pavilion, Bulldogs Unleashed, the Batavia Riverwalk boardwalk and gazebo, Batavia High School’s

Interact Club and an annual scholarship program for graduating seniors at the school.

His community involvement also has included work with Hesed House, bell ringing for The Salvation Army, serving as an usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church, volunteering at Lazarus House and, among acts, helping neighbors clear their driveways in the winter and remove broken tree branches after a storm, according to the release.

There is no pre-registration required for any of the Wednesday drop-in programs, which makes them ideal, spur-of-themoment activities on days when kids and parents need a little change of pace. Parents can register their child on site by arriving just a few minutes before the program begins.

There is a fee of $5 per child.

Children younger than 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

William F. Radecky, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, formerly of Geneva, died peacefully on December 29, 2014, surrounded by his family, from complications of prostate cancer, and quietly entered Heaven.

Bill and his wife Irene were lifelong residents of Geneva, prior to moving to Grand Rapids in 2009, where they have resided at the Breton Ridge campus of Holland Home. For forty years, they owned

Bill was a lifelong member of the Geneva Lutheran Church and active with the Lions Club and Boy Scouts.

He was an avid skier for much of his life, enjoyed golf and was a member of the Geneva Country Club.

Irene and Bill were blessed by many long friendships and enjoyed sharing their vacation homes at Crystal Lake, Michigan and Vero Beach, Florida with family and friends. Bill always had a kind word or humorous story to tell and will be greatly missed by his family for whom he was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend.

Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene; as well as a sister, Betty Thomas; son, William Jr.; and daughter, Susan (David) Oviatt; 4 grandchildren, and 4 greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at the Breton Ridge campus of Holland Home at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, January 9, 2015.

Marklund to host annual fundraiser

bschory@shawmedia.com With the majesty and mysteries of King Tut and Cleopatra leading the way, Marklund’s 19th annual Top Hat Ball is expected to follow its tradition of being one of the Chicago area’s premier fundraising events of the season, the nonprofit announced.

Marklund serves infants, children, teens and adults with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs at campuses in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva and in Bloomingdale.

This year’s theme is An Evening Along the Nile, and the event will take place from 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, to 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at the Chicago Marriott Downtown, 540 N. Michigan Ave. Individual tickets are $350 and include dinner, an open bar, entertainment, live and silent auctions and raffle opportunities. Sponsorship packages are available and are listed on Marklund’s website at www.marklund. org/tophatball.

to celebrate the history and culture of ancient Egypt while helping Marklund raise funds.

As in past years, Marklund will embrace the event’s motif with décor, performances, special guests and unique foods and beverages.

Marklund Director of Special Events Jeannine Zupo said the fundraiser is important to Marklund because it helps with the agency’s dayto-day operating costs, and it helps in other ways as well.

“The Top Hat Ball is our largest premiere fundraising event,” Zupo said. “Last year, we netted $360,000 [from the event], but it also helps us raise friends, too. Our table sponsors bring in people who are potentially new donors for us. It helps us expand our donor network. We show an extensive video on what Marklund does and how people get more involved.”

FreshGround Roasting aims to educate customers Business opened in the fall in Geneva

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – FreshGround Roasting won’t sell you a cup of coffee. But the business will teach you how to brew one.

“We are trying to educate people on what good coffee is and how to brew it, and also teach them where it comes from,” said Eric Andersen of Geneva, who owns FreshGround with his wife, Krista. “Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, behind oil. We think it is important that you get your coffee from people who are practicing sustainable farming practices, as well as growing quality crops.”

FreshGround opened at 321 Stevens St., Suite N, Geneva, in October after previously being located in West Chicago for about three years. The new location is almost three times bigger than FreshGround’s previous location.

“We have more production room, and we are also hoping to have more people come in and do brewing classes and coffee cuppings,” Andersen said. “Coffee cuppings are kind of like wine tastings, except for coffee.”

The business sells a variety of coffee by the pound that is roasted at the store.

Along with its store, FreshGround Roasting also has a wholesale and catering business. The store, for the most part, works with missions that are working directly with coffee farmers.

FreshGround works with six or eight different farms all over the world, including farms in Honduras, Mexico, Ethiopia, Sumatra and New Guinea.

“In Central America, there’s an organization called Growers First that’s working directly with farmers there,” Andersen said. “In Ethiopia, we work with an organization called the New Covenant Foundation. That’s a medical mission and church plant organization, but they also work directly with farmers

As an evangelical Christian, Andersen said he thought working with such organizations was the right thing to do.

It also helps to ensure quality control, he said.

“We know the people that are working on the farms, and we know what they are doing quality control-wise, so we’re able to get a better quality coffee,” Andersen said. “The buyers that we work with are working directly with the farmers, so they’ve tasted the coffee at the farm and know exactly what the quality level is like. And they’re able to work with the farmers if the quality of the coffee isn’t up to where it needs to be.”

Each coffee has its own unique flavor, he said, which customers can discover through the coffee cuppings the store holds.

“If they are roasted properly, you can taste the individual flavors from every

origin, and they are all unique,” Andersen said. “An Ethiopian coffee is radically different from a coffee from Sumatra, which is radically different from a Honduras coffee. They all have different tastes and flavors.”

Because education is a key part of what FreshGround does, the store conducts classes every other week on how people can brew coffee on their own, Andersen said.

FreshGround’s next coffee-brewing class will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at FreshGround. The onehour class is free, but space is limited.

Andersen eschews the popular single-serving coffee brewing systems that exist today.

“There is a convenience factor with the K-Cups, but you do not get the quality out of a K-Cup as you get from brewing it yourself,” he said. “And it really only takes five minutes to brew a quality cup of coffee.”

Once the calamari hit my dining companion’s lips, she said, “This is my new favorite thing in the world right now.”

The calamari, which was served in the vein of a sushi roll, was tender, with a texture of silk, while the tempura and asparagus provided a layer of crunch.

Another appetizer worth noting is the Capesante al Cioccolato ($14), a unique dish with fresh-harvested scallops dusted with cocoa powder and roasted in a wood-burning oven and served over king oyster mushrooms, chocolate vinaigrette and watercress with a finish of 25-year-old balsamico from Modena.

For our entrees, we ordered the Involtini di Maiale ($29) – crab-stuffed pork layered with shrimp over a bed of garlic-mashed potatoes in a savory sauce – and the

tossed with wild mushrooms sautéed with garlic, shallots and white wine and finished with shaved Parmigiano.

Thick noodle ribbons in the dish intertwined with a healthy portion of hearty, perfectly-cooked wild mushrooms, giving the meal a rustic, earthy flair, while the Involtini’s rich and savory flavor combinations tickled the palate.

I cannot stress what a lovely experience I had at Gaenato’s in Batavia. Oozing old-world, eccentric charm, Gaetano’s is a place you visit to get away from it all; to let time stand still, even for just an evening; and to enjoy the true fruits of life – great food, wine and kinship – the essence of Italy.

My dining companion and I traipsed through a wintry landscape to Gaetano’s, just before a heavy snowfall Monday evening, when we were greeted by a warm fire upon entering the restaurant. The cozy atmosphere continued throughout with warm, Venetian-style, golden-hued walls with a starry-night trim and block-like dark wooden tables set with benches and chairs fit with pillows. Pops of color provided by the eclectic lanterns hanging from the ceiling provided an old-world charm to the restaurant’s interior.

The service was impeccable from start to finish; our waiter knew the menu well, and our water glasses, which included a cucumber slice to add freshness, were always filled to the brim. All of the pastas are made from scratch, and the restaurant uses fresh, quality ingredients.

BATAVIA – Over the years, Gaetano’s in Forest Park has been recognized as a superior Italian dining spot across Chicago, raking in exemplary ratings from Zagat, Chicago’s Best and Open Table. Now, Kane County residents need go no further than their own backyard to sample Gaetano’s adventurous Italian cuisine.

Gaetano’s, a fine-dining restaurant nestled on the corner of Wilson and River streets in downtown Batavia, opened in August, and we are lucky to have it. Let me tell you why.

A casual, kitchy setting that looks as if you’ve wandered into a real-life rendering of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Cafe,” Gaetano’s serves inventive, old-world Italian fare with a modern twist.

Executive chef Gaetano DiBenedetto’s cooking career spans three decades, having worked as executive chef at restaurants in Paris, Milan, London and in the U.S., according to the restaurant’s website. He has quite a laundry list of achievements, including preparing state dinners for the presidents of Italy; serving as team Italy’s chef in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City; and receiving the “Ospitalita Italiana” award given by the Italian government for having an “authentic” Italian restaurant – a seal of approval to which only 600 restaurants in the world can lay claim, states the site.

Gaetano is an intrepid culinary trailblazer, intricately playing with multi-tiered flavor combinations that you cannot get anywhere else. The restaurant boasts an extensive menu, and a specials menu that changes often.

For a well-rounded sampling of what Gaetano’s is all about, diners can enjoy multiple tasting menus: The “Gaetapas” tasting menu ($60 a person), which includes three courses (a total of nine dishes) served appetizer-style with pasta and a dessert tray; and the “Chef’s

St. Charles North boys basketball team defeats Kaneland at the United Center

kdruley@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Inadvertently channeling his inner prep student section, Bulls radio announcer Chuck Swirsky lobbed a question to a few reporters late the afternoon of Jan. 3.

“Where is Kaneland?”

Swirsky asked, straightfaced and without the familiar chant-and-clap singsong often associated with the phrase.

For 32 minutes of clock time before that moment, the Kaneland and St. Charles North boys basketball teams basked in the exposure that accompanied playing at the United Center. Swirsky’s query merely provided a topper as he prepared to broadcast the Bulls’ game against the Boston Celtics that night.

Even the adults involved in the high school production beamed.

“It’s still surreal,” transplanted North public address announcer Michael Smith said at halftime.

Teams from the area have made midseason journeys to the UC for the past several seasons. The tradition has survived many sloppy and sleety commutes – much like the one Jan. 3 – not to mention the dissolution of the Western Sun Conference.

At 8:45 a.m. New Year’s Eve 2008, Geneva and Kaneland met in a WSC game on the Windy City’s West Side.

Vikings coach Phil Ralston credited Vernon Hills counterpart Matt McCarty for alerting him to an open date as part of the Bulls’ Preps with Pros program.

In November, Bulls manager of group ticket sales Robby Joseph emailed North and Kaneland coaches Tom Poulin and Brian Johnson, respectively, with a number of documents featuring Bulls letterhead and the Preps with Pros name.

As the home team, North provided the PA announcer.

“We’ve got a pretty great view from the scorer’s table,” said North statistician Eric Willson, also the school’s boys soccer coach. “I’m usually sitting a lot higher than this when I’m here.”

Kaneland stat keeper Brian Aversa, the school’s baseball coach in the spring, reveled in the opportunity as well.

Aversa typically keeps the book with popcorn sleeves and spare pencils at arm’s length.

On Jan. 3, he sat amid NBA statistics monitors and sound software.

“It’s neat being down here,” Aversa said. “Great for the kids and community to enjoy it.”

In between, North took early command en route to a 70-43 nonconference victory.

At the break – after confirming with Poulin and assistant Rob Prentiss that theirs was

indeed the team leading, 36-17 – Swirsky offered the following advice: “Oh my gosh, keep focused. … They always say don’t play to the scoreboard.”

The North Stars were the

first to vacate their auxiliary locker room at the end of the game, prompting a UC official to swiftly insert the placard of the usual tenants – the Luvabulls dancers.

Forced to leave the arena for at least 90 minutes before gates opened for the Bulls-Celtics game many later attended, those players and fans who stuck around ventured throughout Chicago for a bite to eat.

In the process, they answered Swirsky’s question.

Where is Kaneland? Somewhere on cloud nine, just like North.

So, for design novices who are looking to split one room into two, the safest bet is a modular-style bookcase that looks like open square boxes stacked on top of one another.
