Board OKs $1 million loan
Work could bring building in compliance with Medicare standards BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
MORRISON – Morrison Community Hospital will borrow $1 million to make repairs and improvements to the facility, in an attempt to keep the federal
government from yanking its Medicare funding. Building problems date back to a recertification survey conducted by the Illinois Department of Public Health in summer 2011, when the hospital was found to be out of compli-
ance with Medicare standards. The federal government has threatened several times since to terminate its payments to MCH, but has granted the hospital several extensions to bring itself into compliance. Losing its Medicare funding could put
the hospital out of business. The violations include an unsafe sprinkler system, which the loan, approved Tuesday by the hospital board, will be used to upgrade. The current system on the original part of the building, which was built in

RANKLIN GROVE – The holiday spirit blossomed at the Christmas Walk on Dec. 12, and for Scott Spangler, a 45-year veteran of the Santa suit, something special and unexpected happened at the end of the night. Just as he was set to leave the H.I. Lincoln Building, a boy surprised him with a handwritten note. “Dear Santa -,” began the blue-and-red-inked letter. “[F]or Christmas I want my paw paw too not have cancer anymore. and a bike.” Spangler, 60, a special education teacher at Amboy Junior High, read the note out loud as several people looked on. Steve’s wife, Nicole Pritchard, also filed a petition Monday afternoon. Both Ron and Steve Pritchard said they didn’t think there was a conflict of interest for so many family members to be on the same five-member board. “I don’t see that it will be,” Ron Pritchard said. “It’s just not something that’s discussed every day.” Steve Pritchard said he has volunteered with the Park District for

DIXON – The U.S. government has found about 700 trophies won by former city Comptroller Rita Crundwell during horse competitions, and has filed a motion in federal court to seize them. The motion, filed Friday afternoon, also seeks custody of Crundwell’s show clothing collection and miscellaneous household items such as artwork, hats, bar stools and framed photographs of her. If the motion is granted, the U.S. Marshals Service will collect and liquidate the items. The proceeds would be sent to the city as part of a court-ordered monetary judgment, separate from restitution for the nearly $54 million she stole from the city. Also filed Friday was the government’s response regarding the seizure of two of Crundwell’s retirement funds, as well as turnover orders representing $38,434.13. CRUNDWELL CONTINUED ON A4
