WHITESIDE COUNTY I BUILDING CODE DISPUTE
Bar appeals refusal to renew K’s Korners open – for now – pending hearing on liquor license But owners Andy and Marion Younger, whose license expired June 30, have appealed the county’s denial to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. That has triggered an automatic stay of the county’s action until a hearing can be held in the fall, Sue Hofer, a spokeswoman for the state, said Monday. So the bar can legally remain open.

STERLING – Whiteside County has declined to renew the liquor license of a longtime tavern until it brings its new building up to state code. County officials assumed that meant the beer would stop flowing at K’s Korners, 13030 Galt Road, and it did for a short time.
That is, unless the county shuts it down for other reasons, Hofer said. “We’re open by order of the Illinois liquor commission; they said they accepted our appeal,” Marion Younger said Friday. She directed further questions to her attorney, Jim Mertes. RENEW CONTINUED ON A3

LOST LAKE – The National Weather Service can’t confirm it, but residents of Lost Lake say a storm that barrelled through their community Saturday night left evidence that suggested a tornado. Community members and volunteers took to the streets Sunday to clear the roads, Sue Hill, president of the Lost Lake Prop-
erty Owners Association, said Monday. “People came out with chainsaws saying, ‘Give me a job. What can I do?’ and went to work,” she said. “They went around the community and helped out wherever they could. Our main goal was to get all the roads clear, because there were so many trees down blocking the roads, so we did accomplish that yesterday.” STORM CONTINUED ON A2

LYNDON – The entire village was without water for about 2 hours Thursday, but the situation was not nearly as serious as a water shutdown experienced earlier in the year, village officials say. A water line break prompted a boil order and took down the entire village’s water supply last week. The village water utility serves about 280 customers. On Feb. 21, a water main break at Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue completely drained the water tower, leaving residents without water for most of the day. “This time, the water tower wasn’t drained,” Village Clerk Shelly Moore said Monday. “A water line broke, not the main, so this wasn’t the same situation at all.” The water tower was refilled in February, and two samples had to be taken to the area testing site in Dixon. She already has paid $231,823.15 in restitution, the release said. To conceal her embezzlement, Kent created fictitious loans using names of family members and fictitious certificates of deposit. After she was elected treasurer of the Milledgeville-based township in 2009, she used money from the township’s credit union account to cover her embezzlement. EMBEZZLEMENT CONTINUED ON A5
