Green light to grow Board will support operation; business eyes Amboy industrial park BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
DIXON – Lee County soon might get its first legal marijuana growing operation. According to the state’s rules, only one county in each Illinois State Police district will be allowed to have a “cannabis cultivation center.” That
means that in District 1, the race is on among Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties. Tuesday, the Lee County Board took the first step to make sure its county gets the revenue – an estimated $1 million a year – and the jobs associated with having a growing center. Members decided, although not unanimously, to sign a
letter of support for AgriMed, a new company that, in partnership with Kreider Services, would bring a 20,000-squarefoot growing operation to the Green River Industrial Park northwest of Amboy, along with 50 jobs that would pay more than minimum wage. The operation David Thomas, AgriMed’s managing part-
ner, proposed at the meeting would include a secure metal warehouse where the marijuana would be grown. All who work on site would be subject to a state police background check, and no one who works there can have a medical marijuana card, Thomas said. GREEN CONTINUED ON A2

Facade program fronted Guidelines, ad hoc committee OK’d BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570
ROCK FALLS – The council took steps Tuesday to implement the city’s first facade improvement grant program. The program will be administered by the Rock Falls Community Development Corp., and in its initial year, funded by the city. The city budgeted $20,000 in fiscal year 2014-15 to get the program started. The funding is in the form of 50/50 matching grants. The maximum award per grant is $5,000. Facade programs are often run by Main Street programs, but because there is no such program in Rock Falls, the RFCDC has collaborated with the city to get things going. The council approved the application for the program, and the appointment of six members to the Facade Improvement Committee. Members are: Lee Folsom, 3rd Ward alderman; Mark Searing, city building inspector; Gayla Kolb, RFCDC program coordinator; Tim Wilson, Rock Falls Tourism executive director; and local businessmen Bob Klomman and Jeff Guthrie. Administrator plans to apply for state funds BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5535
MORRISON – About 20 people milled about the community room at the Odell Public Library in Morrison on Tuesday evening for a reception hosted in honor of a man who came bearing some very special gifts. Those gifts included the last flag to be flown on the USS Whiteside, a naval ship that served in World War II and the Korean War. Named after Whiteside County (AKA-90), the ship was commissioned on Sept. 11, 1944. The man who brought those gifts is 86-year-old Arlo Ericson, who made the trip along with his wife all the way from St. Joseph, Missouri, a town about 50 miles north of Kansas City.

ROCK FALLS – The offices are full to burstin’ at the Whiteside County Health Department’s community health clinic. So Beth Fiorini, the health department administrator, is on the hunt for money to expand. About $900,000, in fact. Beth Fiorini Thanks to the closure of the former sewer plant, the site at 1300 W. Second St. already has the land, and the parking space. All it needs is a new building, Fiorini said Tuesday. CLINIC CONTINUED ON A5
