Push to keep jobs fell short State agency says Caterpillar ‘never entertained’ offers BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529

STERLING – The company that announced Friday it was moving 170 positions from Anchor Coupling plants in the Sauk Valley to Michigan “never entertained any conversations” with a state agency that was

attempting to preserve the jobs here. On several occasions in the past 4 weeks, representatives from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) reached out to Caterpillar to discuss possible incentives packages to keep the three plants in the state, department spokesman Dave Roeder said.

’’

Rachel Potts, a spokeswoman for Caterpillar, said because of the company’s long history in Illinois it was aware of the types of incentives packages it was likely to receive. “The DCEO was aware of this project, and proactively reached out to Caterpillar to offer any assistance it could provide,” Potts said in an email. “Caterpillar did work with representatives from Michigan to receive business incentives for this project.” Because the Michigan incentives hadn’t been finalized, Potts said she was unable to comment on the specifics.

Those attempts never reached a point where incentives or an offer could be discussed, Roeder said, adding that Caterpillar “never really entertained any conversations” with the state. Instead, the company announced it will move its operations from two plants in Sterling and one in Dixon to its facility in Menominee, Michigan

Bear reported, but not found, in Ogle County

Expect to see some heavy traffic in Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls on Thursday – just don’t try to race them. The Hot Rod Power Tour will cruise through the Sauk Valley, bringing as many as 3,000 hot rods and sports cars through the three cities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The tour also will roll through Oregon. The 20th anniversary tour left Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday and will stop to put on free car shows in seven cities in 7 days. The 1,600-mile journey will make its final stop Friday in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The route will pass through the Sauk Valley, possibly snarling traffic on some of the main arteries. The tour will leave Rockford on state Route 2, coming south into Dixon, where the hot rods will make their way north on Galena Avenue to Everett Street then head west, coming through Sterling. Sheriff still urges residents to take precautions BY VINDE WELLS vwells@shawmedia.com Shaw News Service

OREGON – Ogle County Sheriff’s personnel searched for, but didn’t find, a “good-sized” black bear that a resident reported seeing roaming in the western part of the county Monday evening. “We checked the area and found nothing,” Sheriff Michael Harn said. “I’m not 100 percent sure it really was [a bear]. We haven’t had any other sightings.” Harn said the woman called 911 shortly after 8 p.m. Monday to say she first saw the bear on

the side of state Route 64 west of Mount Vernon Road. The caller said the bear ran into a nearby field. A person near Rockford spotted a bear eating berries outside on Saturday. Early Sunday morning, Roscoe police spotted a bear, too. And the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said there had been sightings in Freeport and Stockton in recent days. Harn said a bear was videotaped in the Roscoe area Tuesday. BEAR CONTINUED ON A2
