Matthew Welling enters the Lee County courtroom Thursday morning as the trial in the murder of Delmar “Leroy” Daniels resumes. Welling chose not to testify on his own behalf.
Welling tells police he doesn’t remember killing Daniels BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5535
DIXON – He woke up that morning, his head throbbing, sore all over and soaked with blood. He walked outside, touched a spot on his forehead and felt glass. He picked out the shard and threw it away. There was a
gash on his leg, his hands and feet were cut all over, and at least a couple of the wounds wouldn’t stop bleeding. “I woke up covered in blood, and I had no idea why,” he told the detectives. He must have been in a bar fight, got hit with a bottle. “I just figured I got my ass whupped,” he said.
It wouldn’t be the first time. “I know I got a bad temper. I always have. I get mouthy. I talk shit occasionally.” Then he saw the paper. Saw the story about the old man stabbed and murdered in his home, his disabled wife left sitting by his body for hours.

Coming this SV Weekend: Billing for health care is complicated. This complexity means many people are hired to figure it all out. And that is costly. Sauk Valley Media has spoken with local hospital executives about how this affects health care. See stories in Saturday’s and Monday’s editions.
Burke say she is leaving for health, personal reasons BY DAVID GIULIANI dgiuliani@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
f you want to make a lot of money, journalism is not for you. But if you seek adventure, this is a great job. Since January 2011, I have worked for Sauk Valley Media, the corporate umbrella for the Daily Gazette and the Telegraph. I’ve enjoyed most parts of my job: s 4HE FUN STORIES Not all we do is serious. I liked writing about the hot dog-eating competition in which one participant announced he was “already a legend” in his own mind, the man who proposed publicly to his girlfriend at the Whiteside County Fair, and the Morrison barber who talks sports, not politics. s 4HE INVESTIGATIONS We can’t sit around waiting for news releases. We have to dig deep for stories. My bosses gave me plenty of time for that. I appreciated it. I was able to provide scrutiny for townships, look into local examples of government pension perks, and reveal the politics that took place inside the office of Lee County’s former state’s attorney.
Would you like to go watch a high school track meet? Friday’s a great day for it. The boys’ Three Rivers Conference meet is at 4 p.m. in Morrison. If you don’t mind driving a bit, a girls Class 1A sectional meet will start at 4 p.m. in Byron, while a Class 2A girls sectional will begin at 4 p.m. in Freeport. The boys NIB-12 meet is at 3 p.m. in Kaneland.
