2015 ELECTION | DIXON CITY COUNCIL
Manager pick a priority
PLAN!T SAUK VALLEY | GRUB HUB
Candidates urge quality search for city manager, no set timeline BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529 @MattMencarini
DIXON – Winners of City Council seats next month will have an important job right away, and they know it. Before the transition from a commission to a managerial form of government is complete, a city manager must be hired. That process could take months, according to the candidates running for council seats, perhaps 6 months or more.
What you need to know
When is the deadline for registering to vote for the April 7 election? When does early voting begin? We have a calendar of key 2015 election dates on Page A5. Most candidates said the emphasis should be on the process and finding the right candidate – whether that’s City Administrator David Nord or someone else – rather than rushing to make a hire by a self-imposed deadline.
Nord, whose contract will expire at the end of May, has said he would like to be retained as city manager. “I’d like to see it happen in the most efficient amount of time possible,” Commissioner Dennis Considine said.
“As soon as the new council and mayor are seated, I think it should be the priority to get into the process.” Considine, 70, and Colleen Brechon, 65, are two current council members seeking reelection. They’re among 11 names that will be on the April 7 ballot for four seats. Commissioner Jeff Kuhn, 63, and local businessman Liandro Arellano Jr., 34, are running for mayor. MANAGER CONTINUED ON A5
DIXON | LEE COUNTY UNITED WAY
Goal surpassed; $407K raised
@SeaWarren
IXON – At the close of its campaign, the Lee County United Way raised a total of $407,042 – surpassing its goal of $400,000. About 160 people attended a celebration dinner at the Post House Ballroom in Dixon Friday night as Executive Director Jenny Koch and Tim Broos, campaign co-chairman, announced the award winners, and honored volunteers, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Attendees enjoyed dinner, a dessert auction, and an award presentation. Also during the dinner, Koch announced that she was working to get the Illinois 211 service to expand to Lee County. The telephone number provides callers with assistance in connecting them to community information and services that they need, such as food and shelter, counseling and mental health services, and family support. “A lot of people ask me what’s the United Way,” Koch said. “For me, the United Way is community, and the United Way campaign is coming together at a specific time of the year and raising – we hope – a lot of money for some wonderful agencies,” she said. “I can’t do that alone. Tim [Broos] and Cathy [Jecklin, campaign co-chairwoman], as great as they are, cannot do that alone.

Johnny’s more than a sports bar
STERLING – Some sports bars have mediocre food. Not Johnny’s Bar and Grill in Sterling. Formerly M&D’s restaurant, Johnny’s is similar to many sports bars I’ve been to. Flatscreen TVs are placed throughout the restaurant. There is a place to play pool and throw darts, and tucked in the back of the building is a dance floor with a DJ booth. But what makes this place different is the service. Co-owners Johnny and Ilir Alimi, who are father and son, treat everyone like family. The first thing Ilir did when I met him was to give me a hug. He speaks to me as if I’ve known him for years.
