DIXON | MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Plan goes up in smoke Grower misses deadline, gives up on permit for Dixon facility given to GTI Clinic Holding, LLC, parent company of Green Thumb Industries, through the state’s Medical Cannabis Pilot Program. Gov. Bruce Rauner made the announcement Feb. 2. GTI also received cultivation permits in Rock Island and Oglesby, and a dispensary permit in Mundelein.

DIXON – The company that was awarded a permit for a medical marijuana growing center in Lee County has decided to give it up. The permit was one of three

GTI missed the Wednesday deadline to pay $600,000 in state fees for the three permits, and a $2 million surety bond payment for each that would have required the company to carry out its contractual obligations. Dixon Mayor Jim Burke said officials were first alerted to

the developing situation a week ago. “They sent us an email that said they were withdrawing the application in Lee County,” Burke said. “At this point, I have heard nothing about why they were doing it.” SMOKE CONTINUED ON A3

2015 ELECTION | DIXON

Crowded field for council Young hopefuls, small business owners in the race BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529 @MattMencarini

DIXON – Eleven names for the four city council seats will be on the ballot in the April 7 election. Candidates say the November vote to change the city’s form of government, along with the Rita Crundwell scandal, increased interest in city government and this election. The two incumbents say they have more to accomplish in city government. For the first time, when Dixon voters cast their ballots, it won’t be for commissioners who will run the city’s departments. It will be for soon-to-be councilmen or councilwomen, who will serve as the city’s legislative body and direct a soon-tobe-hired city manager, who will oversee day-to-day operations. Among the pool of candidates are incumbent Commissioners Dennis Considine and Colleen Brechon. Both were elected in 2011. FIELD CONTINUED ON A5

eAnna Mulvaney leaned her back against the wall and laughed. Her world had been turned around. Not upside-down, the way thyroid cancer had adjusted her life and the lives of everyone around her. No, as the mother of all givers in Rock Falls strode toward the mouth of the tunnel at Rock Falls Middle School, she saw two lines of student-athletes. The wrestlers’ backs were facing “Mama D,” in order to show the all-caps message “FIGHT LIKE A BOSS.” Over the next half-hour, DeAnna was presented with

an oversized check for $500, baskets donated by local businesses, dozens of flowers from Selmi’s, each presented – with a handwritten card addressed to “Mom” or “Mama D” – at the center of the wrestling mat by each member of the Rock Falls Middle School Jets. She also received a heartfelt tribute from close friend Megan Fuller before their boys took on Byron. “Just like those matches our boys have, those toughto-win matches, when you cheer for them, and you fight for them,” Fuller said, “we’re fighting this thing together.” PEOPLE’S VOICE CONTINUED ON A9
