Farewell to the chief

ROCK FALLS – Ever since he was a boy growing up in Prophetstown, Rock Falls Police Chief Mike Kuelper knew he would grow up to wear a badge. Across the street from his parents’ house at 911 Washington St. was the home of the chief of police. To his left, a state trooper, and to his right, a firefighter. “Law enforcement won out,” Kuelper, 56, said.

Cmdr. Tammy Nelson, whom he trained, will be the new chief. “My mother was not thrilled with the idea [of going into law enforcement],” Kuelper said with a grin. “She’s very happy that I’m retiring,

because I tend to get into a lot of stuff and get hurt a fair amount. “I’m a cop’s cop.” In fact, in his early days as chief, he got into a foot chase with a suspect and followed him into a cornfield. Pretty soon, the mayor called. He wanted to see Kuelper. “He told me I couldn’t do that,” Kuelper said, “that I was the chief, and I can’t be like that. And I said, ‘I guess I’m not going to be chief, then, because I bleed blue. I gotta do stuff.” CHIEF CONTINUED ON A11

Today is Rock Falls Police Chief Michael Kuelper’s last day on the job. Don’t let the desk fool you. Kuelper always preferred to be a cop’s cop. “I gotta do stuff. Sitting behind a desk pushing papers isn’t me,” he said.

Unfazed by sub-zero wind chills, a young bald eagle looks over the Rock River on Thursday afternoon at Lawrence Park in Sterling. The forecast is calling for a similarly frigid day today, with a low of 8 below – and that’s not factoring in the wind chill. But it’s supposed to warm up soon. Find out how soon with the 5-day forecast on A3.
