ROCK FALLS | TOURISM MARKETING
Trying to keep ‘party’ going Director launches campaign, blocks out noise of litigation BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
ROCK FALLS – The city’s tourism office is embroiled in a legal battle that threatens its very existence,
but its director says he is taking a business-as-usual approach. Although Rock Falls Tourism and the city have a Jan. 27 court date looming, Tourism Executive Director Tim Wilson on Wednesday officially announced the launch of a
marketing campaign for 2015 and beyond – “Come for the Peace, Stay for the Party!” Wilson finds himself caught in the middle of litigation that will determine whether tourism reserves from the hotel/motel tax
will stay in Tourism’s coffers or be deemed public funds and returned to the city. A decision is expected when both sides return to court in 12 days.

FUN IN THE FORECAST Could there be a better time for a forecast calling for a high of 40 degrees? On Saturday, Edgewood Golf Club in Polo will host a free sledding party. So bundle up your kids, your friends, your neighbors, your neighbor’s kids’ friends – whoever is up for some fun – and head to 10684 W. Edgewood Road. Snow bunnies from 2 to 92 can hit the hills from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult supervision is required. Oh, and there will be food: Hot dogs, brats, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, fries, chips, hot chocolate, soft drinks, and coffee will be available inside by the fireplace. Call 815-946-3636 for more information. Until then, enjoy highs of 31 and 29 today and Friday, respectively. Although it’s likely to be windy today. More details on A3.
DIXON – A look through the year-end report of the Lee County coroner’s office shows it investigated 309 deaths, most of which were results of natural causes. Three of the 309 were left “undetermined,” a designation the coroner’s office uses to indicate that no medical problem could be identified. While “undetermined” deaths are rare, and three of 309 is not a significant figure, it is the highest number of “undetermined” deaths that Deputy Coroner Marty Meyer remembers. But not by much. The year before had two undetermined deaths. Sometimes, undetermined causes of death are ruled Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, Meyer said. It’s not as widely heard of as sudden deaths in infants, but it leaves just as many questions for the family when it happens, Meyer said. Of the three undetermined deaths, one was a 3-month-old infant, but the two others were relatively healthy adults: one 46, the other 35, she said. “Their body just stops functioning,” she explained. “Everything was done to determine – to find out the cause of death, and they just couldn’t.” UNKNOWN CONTINUED ON A5

HAIL TO THE CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER • Take a deep breath and turn to A3, where you’ll find photos of Wednesday morning’s frost taken by SVM Chief Photographer Alex T. Paschal. The images just might take that breath away. • The past two SV Weekend editions have showcased the works of photographers Philip Marruffo and Michael Krabbenhoeft. This week, it was Paschal’s turn to pick his favorite pictures from 2014. He’s a sucker for a good story, too, like that of Dixon senior David Goken (pictured far-right among the Dukes’ football players), who overcame a learning disability to become the heart and soul of his team. Look for Paschal’s highlight reel on C12 of this Saturday’s edition.
