DIXON | LIQUOR CODE
More changes beyond limits? Mayor: Upfront cost and fee schedule could be altered BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – The city doesn’t need to limit the number of liquor licenses it can issue. The question was raised during the City Council meeting Jan. 5, during discussion about an ordinance increasing the current limit of liquor licenses from 62 to 71, split among the different categories.
The ordinance passed its first vote 3-2. It will be up for a final vote Jan. 20, when it’s likely to be approved again. The ordinance might be the first of several changes in the liquor code’s future, as changes to the fees could be made, as well. Four of the five council members favor increasing the number of available liquor licenses but don’t favor an unlimited num-
ber, even though each liquor license must be approved by the city. Commissioner Colleen Brechon said she’s been giving some thought to the increases over the past week and, if she were voting today, would vote yes, just as she did Jan. 5. “I’m not really in favor of taking the limits off,” she said. “I don’t think that’s in the best interest of

the city. I’m still trying to navigate my way through the increases.” Similarly, Commissioner Dennis Considine said he didn’t want to remove the cap, but said the city doesn’t have any right to limit entrepreneurs or small businesses, so he’s in favor of an increased limit that doesn’t hamper business development. SPRINGFIELD (AP) – As Bruce Rauner prepares to take the oath today as the 42nd Illinois governor, donors to the celebratory day include established supporters – and some that might want to become new friends. Among the 162 individuals and groups that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Republican’s transition and inaugural are 58 that previously gave $1.74 million to Rauner’s campaign, according to an analysis of state records by The Associated Press. Donations to support the transition and swearing-in celebration aren’t required to be reported. The Rauner transition team did so voluntarily. But money talks, regardless of the purpose for which it is given, said Kent Redfield, a campaign finance expert at the University of Illinois at Springfield. DONORS CONTINUED ON A4
