WHITESIDE COUNTY | UPDATE ON RELEASED INMATE’S DEATH
Woman died of heart issue Officials thought hypothermia might have been cause BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5535
MORRISON – A heart problem has been ruled the official cause of death for a Rock Falls woman who died Nov. 25 after being released from Whiteside County Jail during a snowstorm.
Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald said the cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat, that was caused by an enlarged heart. “The cause of death for the late Janet Sims, who died on November 25, 2014, has been determined to be due to cardiac arrhythmia
caused by cardiomegaly resulting from left ventricular hypertrophy,” McDonald said in a twosentence news release Thursday afternoon. “This was the finding, after a thorough and completed autopsy and laboratory examination.” McDonald did not respond to
an email sent Thursday evening seeking more information, such as whether the cold might have contributed to Sims’ death. He and other officials originally thought the cause of death might have been hypothermia. HEART CONTINUED ON A4

Supervisor warned of incompatibility issue with offices

ROCK FALLS – The smell of sawdust and the sound of nails being drilled into wooden studs filled the air Thursday at Thome Elementary School. Since the beginning of the school year, eight male students at the school have participated in a shop class. “This class teaches the kids life skills,” said Rob Berry, who teaches the class. “You never know when you have to cut a board or put in a screw or fix a light switch.” Berry also said teaching students how to use different tools is a valuable life skill. To help in launching the class, the Bi-County Special Education Cooperative gave the alternative school a $490 mini grant. The cooperative provides educational services for children with a wide range of disabilities, from autism to attention deficit disorder to physical disabilities. Its budget comes from state and federal money. NAILED CONTINUED ON A5

STERLING – Sterling Township Supervisor Matt Howze has withdrawn his candidacy for alderman in the April 7 election after receiving a letter from the city attorney regarding a potential conflict of interest. The letter from attorney Ron Coplan, dated Nov. 25, advised that the city considered the elected positions of township supervisor and Matt alderman to be Howze incompatible offices. Coplan reasoned that because the township is within city boundaries, the two entities have concurrent jurisdiction on issues, including intergovernmental agreements between them. “If Mr. Howze were in both elected positions, formal and informal intergovernmental agreements would require that he be on both sides of a contract,” Coplan said.
