STERLING – In 2014, the Sterling Police Department’s DUI arrest rate was double what it was in 2013. In fact, it was up all over the county. Both Rock Falls Police Department and the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department show an increase in number of DUI arrests. Sterling Police Chief Ron Potthoff attributes that not necessarily to more drunken drivers on the road, but to an increase in traffic stops. “What I am saying is that it’s very possible that it’s because ... officers are being more vigilant, and the push for DUIs, because DUIs kill people,” he said. Ron In 2013, SterPotthoff ling police arrested 35 people on DUI charges. As of Dec. 11, the latest time for which numbers were available, 53 people had been arrested in Sterling on DUI charges. In Rock Falls, 23 people were charged with DUIs in 2013, and 33 in 2014. Specific numbers weren’t available for the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department, but Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi said he did believe the arrest rate was up, for pretty much the same reason as the increase in arrests in Sterling. The story is a little different in Dixon, where the numbers the 2014 arrest rate is pretty much the same as the 2013 arrest rate. Dixon police arrested 79 people on DUI charges, and 73 in 2014. Lee County authorities recently announced a re-invigoration of its DUI policy.
