dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two forums hosted by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce will be held at the Egyptian Theatre to allow voters to hear from candidates for DeKalb mayor and City Council, and DeKalb School District 428 board in the April 4 election.

On Wednesday, the chamber will host the city’s mayoral and alderman candidates for a meet-and-greet, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Egyptian, 135 N. Second St., followed by a candidates’ forum starting at 6:30 p.m.

Incumbent John Rey faces challengers Michael Embrey, Misty Haji-Sheikh and Jerry Smith in the race for DeKalb mayor.

The DeKalb City Council’s 2nd and 4th Wards both have multiple contenders. Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane faces William Lamb while 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow is being challenged by Mike Bauling and Patrick Fagan.

Sixth Ward candidate Mike Verbic is now unopposed after Michael “Max” Maxwell announced his withdrawal.

On Thursday, the chamber hosts candidates running for the three open seats on the District 428 board. The event will have a similar format as the city candidate forum.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A new state lawmaker said she’s surprised by the “insane amount of drinking” that goes on in the State House.

Providence Democratic Rep. Moira Walsh told WPRO-AM on Tuesday that lawmakers have “file cabinets full of booze.” She described how they recently took shots on the floor of the House of Representatives to celebrate Dominican Republic Independence Day. Walsh took office in January after ousting a longtime incumbent in last year’s Democratic primary and is known for being blunt. She was fired from her job as a waitress in January after her employer said her liberal political views hurt the restaurant’s reputation.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Tuesday marked the last day to register to vote at the county clerk’s office or with deputy registrars.

However, grace period registration opens Wednesday at the Legislative Center on 110 E. Sycamore St. in Sycamore and will last through Election Day. People who register to vote during the grace period at this location must vote the same day.

Legislative leaders late Tuesday sought to dismiss her claims of rampant drinking, with Democratic House Majority Leader Joseph Shekarchi telling the Providence Journal he has never seen anyone intoxicated on the floor or impaired while voting.

But it’s not uncommon for Rhode Island legislators to have toasts of alcohol during celebratory occasions. One of the biggest is next week ahead of St. Patrick’s Day. Nor are Rhode Island lawmakers alone in drinking on the job, though some other states have sought to curb the practice.

DeKalb’s Marching Barbs will perform in St. Patrick’s Day Parade

DeKALB – In 1995, Ellen Mays played the mellophone and marched with the University of Illinois Marching Illini in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin.

Exactly 22 years later, her son Andy Mays, a freshman at DeKalb High School, will be playing the mellophone and marching in the same parade.

The DeKalb High School Marching Barbs have been invited to appear March 17 in the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin. The parade is part of Ireland’s four-day St. Patrick’s Festival.

On Sunday, 102 members of the DHS Marching Barbs and 11 chaperones will board a plane with their uniforms and instruments for an eight-day trip to the Emerald Isle.

They will be joined in Ireland by 37 parents and family members who will travel separately as part of a companion trip.

“This trip is exciting for both of us,” said Mays, who will be traveling with her son as a member of the companion trip. “When I participated in the parade in college, I never guessed that my son would be marching in the same parade 22 years later. We’ve been talking about the trip for almost two years. It’s such a wonderful opportunity for him and the band to represent the city of DeKalb, the state of Illinois and the United States.”

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will start at noon (7 a.m. CST) March 17. The parade will feature bands and music ensembles from Ireland, the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Bahamas competing to win awards in several categories.

The parade route is more than a mile and a half long, and the band will march in front of the president of Ireland and the lord mayor of Dublin.

More than half a million people view the parade live, and millions watch it on TV. The parade can be seen anywhere in the world through an online livestream, offered on the festival’s free downloadable app: www.stpatricksfestival.ie/connect/app.

While in Ireland, the band also will see important Irish historical and cultural locations, including the Rock of

Cashel, the Blarney Stone, the Cobh Heritage Center, the English Market in Cork, Kilkenny Castle and Trinity College, where the Book of Kells, a 1,200-year-old calfskin manuscript containing transcriptions of the four biblical Gospels, is kept. In Cork, both the students and the companion tour will be entertained with an Irish ceili, featuring Irish dancing, singing and storytelling.

On March 16, the band will perform a free concert outdoors at Titanic Belfast, an exhibition with more than nine galleries highlighting the story of the Titanic. On March 18, the band will participate in a joint concert with the Finglas Concert Band in Dublin.

“It is an educational trip with cultural and musical education,” band director Steve Lundin said. “We will be doing some really exciting performances, nothing like what we do at home. Some students have never experienced the world outside of DeKalb or Chicago. Some have never been on a plane or abroad before. I’m excited to see how much they can

learn about the world.”

To prepare for the parade and two additional performances, Lundin said that the Marching Barbs have been practicing for “countless hours” since August. In addition to practicing during class, the students also have attended multiple evening practices after school.

Sophomore mellophonist Abigail Diehl said that she has been practicing music and marching more than three hours a week outside of class in preparation for the upcoming trip.

“Playing and memorizing music is easy, but it’s different when you’re marching,” Diehl said. “Most of the music has been memorized, but we will be bringing sheet music as well.

I’m excited for the trip, especially since I will be able to spend quality time with my band friends. Band friends are different kinds of friends.

We’re more like family.”

To practice performing in front of crowds, the band also has performed at community events, including the grand reopening of Wendy’s in DeKalb and DeKalb-Sycamore Chev-

rolet’s summer Pre-Party Car Show.

The DeKalb Band Parents Organization, an ad hoc committee of DeKalb Music Boosters, held fundraising events for the past year to help offset the students’ traveling costs. Fundraising for the trip started March 5, 2016, and concluded with the spring plant sale that ended Tuesday.

The cost for each of the students to travel was $2,300 before fundraising.

The trip’s cost includes round-trip airfare, three-star hotels, two meals a day and transportation by motorcoach for all transfers and tours in Ireland.

More than $80,000 has been raised for the band’s trip to Ireland. The DHS BPO was able to provide $350 a student and will help offset some of the cost of instrument transportation.

Fundraising events included a drive-thru pork chop dinner, a Yankee candle sale, a mattress sale, a golf outing, car washes, and sales of Fanny May candy, detergent, butter braids, plants and gift cards.

ComEd cuts trees again along DeKalb trail

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A little more than four years after workers clear-cut trees and other vegetation near power lines along the DeKalb Park District’s Nature Trail, they returned Tuesday to clear vegetation that may interfere with ComEd electrical service.

ComEd representatives met with the DeKalb Park District board in a special meeting last month to outline the work they will be conducting throughout this month.

DeKalb Park District Executive Director Amy Doll said the work is part of a five-year cycle by the provider to ensure reliable electrical service and public safety.

“They do significant work along that trail underneath the power lines,” Doll said. “They’ll be coming in to remove any trees that will grow in excess of 10 feet tall at maturity and will also be rooting buckthorns that grow underneath the power lines, as well.”

Because of this work, there will be periodic closures in certain parts of the 1.3-mile trail, which runs between Sycamore Road and First Street.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The soon-to-be vacant DeKalb School District 428 superintendent position will be officially announced to potential candidates within the next few days, according to a representative of the Illinois Association of School Boards.

The District 428 board selected IASB to aid in their search to fill the vacancy that will occur when Doug Moeller leaves during a special meeting in February after hearing from three different firms.

IASB spokesman Alan Molby presented the firm’s efforts to find a new superintendent during Tuesday’s

board meeting.

Based on information provided by district staff, Molby presented a brochure highlighting District 428, which will be posted to the IASB website within a few days and will allow interested individuals to apply for vacancy.

Board members wished to include additional information in the brochure to highlight the district’s qualities, such as partnerships with both Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College, as well as the numerous honors programs and AP courses the district offers at the high school level.

The brochure also requires a general timeline of the search process

and estimated compensation.

The target employment date for the selected individual is July 1.

The new superintendent will replace Moeller, who will resign at the end of April after being put on paid administrative leave in September after accusations of sexual harassment.

Interim Superintendent Brad Hawk, who is temporarily replacing Moeller, is more than halfway through a maximum 100 days of service to the district.

Some candidates for the District 428 board disagreed with starting a search process before new members were elected in April.

“I realize the process is going for-

ward, but the election process is going forward as well,” Jeff Hallgren said. “We should have a voice in this.

If you’re going to address this, I do feel very strongly we should put in place a process where new board members can get involved.”

Halgren also opposed IASB as the consulting firm to leading the search.

“The candidates they choose from are often recycled candidates that have an association with the Illinois Association of School Boards and that relationship gets in the way of good candidates,” Hallgren said.

Molby assured Hallgren that the association draws from a broadbased pool of candidates within and outside of Illinois.

Nancy Seymour Heatley, Ph.D., age 85, of Sycamore, Illinois, and Jupiter, Florida, and former many-year resident of Dundee Township passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva.

Nancy was born on January 8, 1932, in Chicago, and was the only child born to the late Edward and Bonnie (ne’e Packard) Seymour. In 1978, Nancy earned her Ph.D. in psychology from Northern Illinois University.

She was a former longtime resident of the Dundee area and a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church in West Dundee. She was an animal lover and a big supporter of Lincoln Park Zoo as well as many area animal shelters. Nancy was the chief executive officer of Seymour Paints in Sycamore. She was very outgoing, fun-loving and had a big and unforgettable personality. Most of all, Nancy was a kind and very generous friend and benefactor to many.

Sullivan said police do not yet know what caused Ensign to cross into the wrong lane, but there is no indication of any type of impairment at this time.

Ensign was transported to Kishwaukee Hospital and later to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford for injuries that do not appear life-threat-

ening, Sullivan said.

Ensign is charged with improper lane use in connection with the incident, which is being investigated by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and DeKalb County Coroner’s Office, according to the release.

DeKALB – A 22-year-old woman from Iowa was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning near the intersection of Somonauk and Gurler roads.

Somonauk Road was closed from Fairview to Gurler roads as police and work crews cleared the scene. The road has been reopened, police said.

Joann Weeks was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 6:20 a.m., according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office news release.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said Weeks was living in DeKalb, but her address is listed in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, where she and her family are from.

Northern Illinois University spokesman Joe King said Weeks was studying criminology and sociology at NIU last semester, but she was not enrolled in the current semester.

Weeks was traveling south on Somonauk Road when a northbound 2015 Hyundai Sonata crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with her 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, according to the release.

“There was extensive damage,” Sullivan said. “It was a head-on collision; both vehicles were totaled.”

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the accident report.

The Sonata was driven by 23-year-old Jacob Ensign, of the 1300 block of West Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

International Women’s Day march set

news@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb Rise Up Council is sponsoring a rally and a march Wednesday in support of International Women’s Day. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a rally at the MLK Commons on the Northern Illinois University campus. At 6 p.m., the group will march to Peace Corner, located at First Avenue and Lincoln Highway. Once there, the group will host an open mic on issues related to gender and social justice.

DeKalb Rise Up is made up of several area activist groups, including

Action Steps for America (DeKalb/ Sycamore), DeKalb Area Progressives, DeKalb County Democrats, DeKalb Stands Together, NIU Student Association Senate and the NIU Young Democratic Socialists. The group is also supporting #DeKalbDayWithoutAWoman. Group members are encouraging the community to wear red clothing, to take the day off from work or school if possible, and to shop at local women-owned businesses Wednesday, said Kelsey Williams, founder of DeKalb Rise Up. “The idea is to not shop at big box stores that don’t pay fair wages,” she said. “We support all local businesses, but especially businesses that are

owned by women. We want to show solidarity and to show them that they’re valued here.”

Williams said that women’s contributions aren’t always valued by society, and the march will show support for the work that women do inside and outside of the home.

“We want women to receive equal pay for equal work, paid maternity leave and affordable child care,” she said. “We want women’s work to be valued. This isn’t a matter of men vs. women, but a matter of equality.

Women are productive members of

society and need to be respected.”

DeKalb Rise Up is working on sponsoring more activist events in the coming months. Williams said there are a lot of people in DeKalb County who want to make their voices heard in government.

“We want to keep the focus off partisan politics, like Democrat vs.

Republican or men vs. women,” she said. “We want to focus on coming together as a community to support and understand each other, and for all of us to be informed, educated and active.”

To earn extra money, band members helped with a large company picnic in Rochelle, cleaned up garbage after the DeKalb Corn Fest and staged balloon targets for local mounted shooting competitions.

Ronell Chisom, a senior baritonist, said that without fundraising, he would not have been able to afford the trip.

“Without participating in the sales and help from my parents, the trip would have been incredibly expensive,” Chisom said. “Now I’ll be able to go to Ireland, be a part of this incredible experience and be living my dream. I want to thank my parents, Mr. Lundin, the community – everyone – for making this trip possible.”

Lundin said that although the participating students already paid for the trip, last-minute fundraising efforts are required to help pay for incidentals, including fees for the weight of extra baggage.

In addition to every traveler’s personal items and the bands’ uniforms and helmets, the equipment needed for performances, including large instruments, such as sousaphones and marching percussion, must be transported overseas. Percussion instruments traveling with the students include five bass drums, seven snare drums, three sets of tenor drums and four pairs of symbols. Because of their weight, the cost of transporting the instruments as baggage on the plane cannot be estimated in advance.

Donations toward the trip still are being accepted and could be necessary to help cover final shipping costs. Contributions can be sent to the DHS Band, care of the music department at DeKalb High School, 501 W. Dresser Road in DeKalb.

“The community has been great, and we couldn’t have done this trip without their help,” Lundin said. “Families worked so hard to provide for their kids. This hasn’t just been an idea of the band teacher. The band families and the community stepped up to make this trip happen for them.”

STATE Chicago police alter policy on force after backlash

The Associated Press CHICAGO – A draft of a new Chicago Police Department use-of-force policy released Tuesday would give officers more latitude in deciding when to fire their weapons, backing off an earlier proposal that the police union had said was too restrictive and could have put officers in danger.

Chicago is struggling to forge a new police policy that balances the need for officers to do their work amid a wave of shootings, while restoring community trust following public anger over the shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014.

The new draft backs off a suggestion in October that officers not use force unless “all other reasonable alternatives have been exhausted.” That prompted concern from the police union that it was “too restrictive and would endanger officers who need to protect themselves in various situations.”

The proposal now says that officers are required to use de-escalation tactics only when it does not put their personal safety at risk.

“The requirement that officers apply de-escalation principles does not mean officers must endanger themselves,’ according to the latest draft.

Rauner: Illinois ‘won’t do well’ under GOP health plan

CHICAGO – Illinois’ Republican governor said he is “very concerned” that the state’s residents might be “left in the lurch” under the health care plan proposed by congressional Republicans.

Gov. Bruce Rauner said Tuesday that he is talking with his fellow GOP governors and members of Congress on ideas for changing the proposal.

He declined to discuss his specific recommendations.

But Rauner said his first impression of the proposal is “Illinois won’t do very well under the changes they’re recommending.” He said he’s especially concerned that it will result in “pressure to reduce insurance coverage for people in Illinois.”

Dean Angelo Sr. told the Chicago Tribune that the changes since October show the department paid attention to union concerns.

“It’s not like we look forward to utilizing force or we look forward to firing our weapon,” he told the newspaper.

But others said that latest proposal was troubling in the context of a history of Chicago police condoning and using excessive force.

“Nobody wants a cop to be shot or

hurt, but they haven’t demonstrated good judgment as when to use (lethal force) and when not to,” Alderman Howard Brookins Jr. said. “I am concerned about giving them more authority and more latitude toward (the use of) lethal force.”

Jewish school evacuated after bomb threat

CHICAGO – Authorities said students were evacuated for nearly two hours from a Jewish grade school in Chicago after someone called in a bomb threat.

Police shut down several streets surrounding the Chicago Jewish Day School on the city’s North Side after the threat was reported Tuesday morning.

Police said school staff decided to evacuate the students and staff members. Police dogs were used to search around the school, but police didn’t immediately say whether anything was found before students were allowed to return.

The school’s website says it has more than 200 students from junior kindergarten to eighth grade.

Rockford airport sees jump in cargo, passengers

ROCKFORD – A northern Illinois airport said it saw jumps in cargo handling and passengers last year.

The Chicago Rockford International Airport said it recorded a nearly 16 percent increase from 2015 in the amount of cargo to about 923 million pounds.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Ohio-based ABX Air started operations at the airport last September.

Airport officials said ABX now has four flights a day, while UPS added two daily flights late last year.

The airport’s passenger traffic increased 4 percent to about 225,000 passengers, in part because Allegiant added capacity on its routes to Punta Gorda and Clearwater in Florida and Mesa, Arizona.

U of I aims to end binge drinking tradition

CHAMPAIGN – University of Illinois officials are working with law enforcement in Champaign-Urbana to end a student tradition of binge drinking on what’s known as “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day” after a student’s death this weekend.

Twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Morales died over the weekend, becoming the third student to do so in a little more than a decade during “Unofficial” festivities.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said the cause of Morales’ death appears to be consistent with multiple blunt-force injuries suffered in a fall from a fourth-floor balcony Friday night. Police said Morales had been drinking with friends and that the fall is believed to be accidental.

University chancellor Robert Jones said he plans to gather community leaders to help end the tradition before the next observance of “Unofficial.”

Conservative backlash threatens to sink new GOP health care bill

WASHINGTON – A powerful conservative backlash threatened to sink the new Republican health care bill Tuesday less than 24 hours after its launch, even as President Donald Trump and congressional leaders began trying to sell the legislation as the long-promised GOP cure for “Obamacare.”

“We’re going to do something that’s great and I’m proud to support the replacement plan released by the House of Representatives,” Trump declared at the White House as he met Tuesday with the House GOP vote-counting team. “We’re going to take action. There’s going to be no slowing down. There’s going to be no waiting and no more excuses by anybody.”

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence told GOP lawmakers at the Capitol this was their chance to scuttle President Barack Obama’s 2010 law, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell forecast congressional passage by early April.

But major obstacles loomed as key Republican lawmakers announced their opposition, and one conservative group after another torched the plan.

The Club for Growth, Heritage Action for America, Americans for Prosperity and Tea Party Patriots variously derided the new bill as Obamacare Lite, Obamacare 2.0 and even RyanCare, in a dig at House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

The new GOP plan would repeal the current law’s unpopular fines on people who don’t carry health insurance.

Those payments would phase out for higher-earning people.

The legislation also would limit future federal funding for Medicaid, which covers low-income people, about 1 in 5 Americans. And it would loosen rules that Obama’s law imposed for health plans directly purchased by individuals.

Republican supporters and opponents are all intent on reducing the role of government in health care, but some House conservatives say the new bill doesn’t go nearly far enough.

For example, they are focusing on the system of refundable tax credits they denounce as a costly new entitlement.

They’re demanding a vote on a straightforward repeal-only bill.

At the White House meeting Tuesday, Trump made clear to House Republicans that he would be personally engaging with individual

members who oppose the bill as leadership tries to round up votes, according to a lawmaker present who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private gathering.

Not long after, Trump appeared to be making good on his promise, tweeting at Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who has criticized the bill.

“I feel sure that my friend @RandPaul will come along with the new and great health care program because he knows Obamacare is a disaster!” the president wrote.

The president plans to reconvene the group next week and will meet with conservative leaders to discuss the issue Wednesday.

The concerted conservative opposition was a remarkable rebuke to legislation GOP leaders hope will fulfill seven years of promises to repeal and replace Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, pledges that played out in countless Republican campaigns for House and Senate as well as last year’s race for president.

WikiLeaks reveals CIA files on hacking

WASHINGTON – WikiLeaks published thousands of documents Tuesday described as secret files about CIA hacking tools the government employs to break into users’ computers, mobile phones and even smart TVs from companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung.

The documents describe clandestine methods for bypassing or defeating encryption, antivirus tools and other protective security features intended to keep the private information of citizens and corporations safe from prying eyes.

U.S. government employees, including President Donald Trump, use many of the same products and internet services purportedly compromised by the tools.

The documents describe CIA efforts – cooperating with friendly foreign governments and the U.S. National Security Agency – to subvert the world’s most popular technology platforms, including Apple’s iPhones and iPads, Google’s Android phones and the Microsoft Windows operating system for desktop computers and laptops.

The documents also include discussions about compromising some internet-connected televisions to turn them

into listening posts. One document discusses hacking vehicle systems, indicating the CIA’s interest in hacking modern cars with sophisticated on-board computers.

WikiLeaks has a long track record of releasing top secret government documents, and experts who sifted through the material said it appeared legitimate.

The chairman of the House intelligence committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said he was very concerned about the release and had asked the intelligence community for more information about it.

Former CIA Director Mike Hayden told MSNBC he had undertaken only a cursory review of the documents, but that if they were what they were purported to be, it would amount to a “very extensive file of the tactics, techniques, procedures, targets and other political rules” under which the CIA hacks targets. “If it is that, it would be very, very damaging,” he said.

Jonathan Liu, a spokesman for the CIA, said: “We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents.” White House spokesman Sean Spicer also declined to comment.

Missing from WikiLeaks’ trove are the actual hacking tools themselves,

some of which were developed by government hackers while others were purchased from outsiders. WikiLeaks said it planned to avoid distributing tools “until a consensus emerges” on the political nature of the CIA’s program and how such software could be analyzed, disarmed and published.

Tuesday’s disclosure left anxious consumers who use the products with little recourse, since repairing the software vulnerabilities in ways that might block the tools’ effectiveness is the responsibility of leading technology companies. The revelations threatened to upend confidence in an Obama-era government program, the Vulnerability Equities Process, under which federal agencies warn technology companies about weaknesses in their software so they can be quickly fixed.

It was not immediately clear how WikiLeaks obtained the information, and details in the documents could not immediately be verified. WikiLeaks said the material came from “an isolated, high-security network” inside the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence but didn’t say whether the files were removed by a rogue employee or whether the theft involved hacking a federal contractor working for the CIA or perhaps breaking into a staging server where such informa-

tion might have been temporarily stored.

“The archive appears to have been circulated among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive,” WikiLeaks said in a statement.

Some technology firms on Tuesday said they were evaluating the information. Microsoft Corp. said it was looking into the report, while the maker of secure messaging app Signal said the purported CIA tools affected users’ actual phones and not its software design or encryption protocols.

The manufacturer of the popular Telegram mobile messaging app said in a statement that manufacturers of cellphones and their operating systems, including Apple, Google and Samsung, were responsible for improving the security of their devices.

It said the effort will require “many hours of work and many security updates” and assured its customers that “If the CIA is not on your back, you shouldn’t start worrying yet.”

The tools described in the documents carried bizarre names, including Time Stomper, Fight Club, Jukebox, Bartender, Wild Turkey, Margarita and “RickyBobby,” a race car-driving character in the comedy film “Talladega Nights.”

Trump may not like the answer

All presidents enter the White House with a store of credibility that comes with the office, which they can use to press an agenda, move Washington’s policy machinery or lead the nation when crisis strikes.

President Donald Trump is burning through his with breathtaking speed. That will ultimately hurt him, the presidency and the country.

His latest rash expenditure from his already depleted trust account came in yet another Twitter outburst, in which Trump accused President Barack Obama of having his phones at Trump Tower tapped during the 2016 campaign. As is so often the case, Trump offered no substance to back up his charge, which appears to rely on a handful of news stories containing no significant evidence the former president personally ordered any wiretapping, let alone of Trump.

For some time, there have been suggestions that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which operates behind closed doors, issued a warrant allowing federal agents to examine potential contacts between Trumpworld and Russia. But The Post and others have not confirmed these reports, and none of them personally implicate Obama. Nor would they: The president cannot order wiretaps. According to U.S. officials cited by The Post and others, FBI Director James Comey has asked the Justice Department to publicly knock down Trump’s allegations.

Trump has nevertheless asked Congress to investigate his accusations. To which we say: fine, as long as doing so serves congressional investigators’ larger purpose. The intelligence community has united around the conclusion that the Russian government interfered with the country’s democratic process, and that the interference was tilted toward helping Trump. The nation must know what methods the Russians used, why they acted, to what extent any Americans wittingly or unwittingly aided them, and how to combat future intrusions.

In the process of answering these central questions, it would be only natural for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, many of whose members are committed to conducting a serious investigation, to inquire about any foreign intelligence surveillance relating to Trump and Russia, as well as the suspicions on which any warrants might have been based. As long as lawmakers see that a judge authorized any direct surveillance of Trump, his circle or his property, they can quickly discard concerns about improper wiretapping and reassure the public about federal officials’ propriety. After all, Trump asked. He may not like the answer he gets back.

Doctors must be allowed to discuss guns with patients Medical professionals have the right to protect people – that’s what a federal appeals court in Florida unanimously ruled Feb. 16 when it said doctors can’t be penalized for discussing gun safety with their patients. It was a well-deserved comeuppance for the gun lobby and its latest ploy to pit Second Amendment rights against the First Amendment.

They sought to muzzle doctors when they talked to their patients about gun safety, but the court didn’t buy the argument.

Lawmakers in Florida had passed a state law in 2011 that threatened to rescind doctors’ licenses and impose fines if they asked patients simple questions about weapons storage. But doctors, and especially pediatricians, regularly discuss safety surrounding guns, pools and other important health-related issues with their patients. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages pediatricians to discuss firearm safety with their patients. One in three American

homes with children have guns, and 1.7 million kids live in homes with loaded firearms. It’s the reasonable thing to do, and absolutely in keeping with the medical profession’s mission to protect and sustain human life.

Gun accidents are a leading cause of child deaths, and when doctors make recommendations, their patients are three times more likely to safely store their guns.

Besides, any attempt to block free speech, as the Florida measure attempted to do, represents a clear violation of a doctor’s First Amendment rights. Since Florida passed its gag law, 10 other states have tried and failed to pass their own bills. Missouri in 2014 passed a bill making it more difficult for doctors to ask patients about firearm safety but falling short of an outright gag order. Gun safety groups said the law nevertheless helps stifle doctor-patient discussions about guns. A 2016 study by the Washington University School of Medicine showed that

only 13 percent of families were asked by their pediatricians about household firearms. The report’s researchers found that laws like Missouri’s and Florida’s “have likely increased physicians’ uncertainty about what they can say and their concern that discussing the topic may be received negatively.”

Almost three-quarters of gun-owning parents surveyed by the Washington University researchers said they want their kids’ physicians to advise them about household gun safety.

The National Rifle Association suggests such doctor-patient discussions impinge on gun owners’ privacy, which is absurd.

Every patient has a right to tell the doctor to mind his or her own business. But the conversation could cause gun owners to think twice before carelessly leaving a gun where a child could access it.

If it’s a question between privacy and saving lives, the latter priority should prevail every time.

American parents deserve school choices

SPRINGFIELD – The subject of school choice has come to the forefront in recent weeks with the appointment of Betsy DeVos as the U.S. Education Secretary.

When folks debate the merits of school choice, I can’t help but smile.

The fact of the matter is we already have school choice in America.

Bureaucrats sit in school administration buildings and draw lines on maps to determine where your child will go to school in a particular school district. They choose.

You don’t. And school district boundaries drawn before students – and most of their teachers – were born, play an even bigger role in determining what services will be available for students.

The caliber of education a child receives should not be determined by a family’s ZIP code.

For example, the rural school

VIEWS Scott Reeder district I live in near Springfield has a limited curriculum. My neighbors tell me youngsters wanting to get into competitive math and science curriculums at top universities are often left disappointed.

Fortunately, my family can afford to send our daughters to a Catholic school in Springfield that offers a more demanding curriculum.

But many folks, whether they live in inner cities or rural areas, just don’t have that option.

They lack the money to choose, so their kids are just stuck.

Don’t get me wrong, Illinois has some excellent public schools. I attended public schools and universities from kindergarten through

graduate school. For the most part, my experiences were good. But like most students, I had some excellent teachers and I had some weaker ones.

DeVos has advocated for voucher programs where money follows the student.

In other words, vouchers could be issued to parents and they could choose where their youngsters learn. They could choose between private, religious, public, online, charter or home-schooling options.

It seems a fair solution.

I’ve yet to meet a parent who wants to see their child fail.

But teacher unions oppose this idea. They fear it will result in less money going to public schools.

That could happen, but only if public schools fail to compete.

Most folks are quite happy with the public schools their children are attending.

But not all are.

For example, a 2004 Fordham Institute study found that 39 percent of public school teachers in Chicago send their own children to private schools. That’s compared with a national average of 12 percent of all children who are educated privately.

Think about that.

Four out of 10 Chicago teachers are willing to pay money to keep their kids from attending the schools where they teach.

That speaks volumes.

Those teachers have school choice because they can afford it.

Why shouldn’t all families be afforded the same opportunity?

Spartans reach sectional final Marcinkowski sinks FTs with 0.1 left on clock

However, thanks to some good fortune and a pair of clutch free throws by a senior, the Spartans’ wild postseason ride marches on.

Sycamore senior forward James Marcinkowski came up with a timely offensive rebound and turned it into two free throws with 0.1 seconds left in the game Tuesday in the Spartans’ dramatic 36-35 victory over Belvidere in a Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional semifinal.

“I had no clue how much time was left,” Marcinkowski said. “I just grabbed a rebound and threw it up there and got fouled. ... This is by far my favorite basketball memory – not even close.”

Neither team led by more than four points in the second half to set up the thrilling final minute of the game. With the Spartans (14-15) trailing, 32-31, Sycamore senior forward Keyshawn Stallworth came up with a three-point play with 57 seconds left. After a pair of empty possessions for both teams, Belvidere senior Austin Revolinski nailed a 3-pointer at the top of the arc with 14.7 seconds remaining to give the Bucs a 35-34 lead.

Sycamore senior forward Ty Sulaver, who scored a game-high 12 points, missed two midrange jumpers in the closing moments, and Marcinkowski grabbed the rebound on the second miss and was fouled with 0.1 left on the clock.

After narrowly making the first attempt – it bounced off the rim and rolled in – Belvidere (17-14) called timeout with the score tied at 35.

“We had a free-throw shooting contest during practice a couple weeks ago and he took second place, so he knew he could make them,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “We just tried to get him to relax and he told the coaches, ‘I got this.’”

Marcinkowski, who finished with eight points off the bench, swished the second attempt – causing the Sycamore crowd to erupt in cheers.

“It’s just like football, I don’t know how to explain it,” Sulaver said of the postseason run. “It just happens. You’re used to big games, so when you get in an atmosphere where the whole gym’s packed, you’re used to that.”

Sulaver made a major impact in the

first half, scoring six of his 12 points in the second quarter – including back-toback jumpers in the high post against the Belvidere zone that gave the Spartans the biggest lead of the night, 19-12, with 1:05 remaining in the half.

For the Spartans, it’s the second consecutive low-scoring, one-point victory. In the Class 3A Sycamore Regional championship, the Spartans topped Kaneland, 37-36, in overtime.

“At the end of the day, you survive and advance and that’s what we did,” Picolotti said.

By the numbers: Stallworth finished with nine points and seven rebounds, Mizgalski had four points and eight rebounds, and senior guard Jordan Tolzin made a 3-pointer in the second quarter.

Belvidere senior Xavier Dent scored a team-high 10 points.

Beyond the stats: Marcinkowski’s free throws were just two of four attempts for Sycamore at the foul line – all coming in the fourth quarter. While the Spartans went 3 for 4 from the line, the Bucs were 9 for 11 on free throws.

Payne gets more minutes with Rondo sidelined

mpotash@suntimes.com ORLANDO – Bulls newcomer Cameron Payne seemed to get the confidence boost he needed when he started the fourth quarter of a tie game against the Pistons on Monday night. Right?

“It’s big time, just playing period,” Payne said. “Not even late – just being out there on the court. You can get a lot of confidence that way. I think that’ll be good for me.”

Payne, the point guard considered the key player acquired in the trade that sent Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to the Thunder on Feb. 24, has been feeling his way through a challenging transition in his first 10 days with the Bulls.

Payne’s performance in Monday night’s game was hardly a breakthrough, but at least showed a glimpse

of his potential. Playing 23 minutes with Rajon Rondo out with an injury, the 2015 first-round pick from Murray State hit 4 of 9 3-point shots and scored 14 points. He was far from perfect – he shot 5 of 14 overall – and he looks like a guy still trying to acclimated to his teammates and coach Fred Cameron Hoiberg’s system. But it Payne at least was an indication that the more minutes he gets, the better he’ll be.

“I feel like I’m starting to get comfortable a little bit,” Payne said. “Starting to get a little more confidence.”

If anything, it might have edged the Bulls closer to giving Payne the playing time and role he needs to fully acclimate himself into Hoiberg’s offense and give the Bulls a chance to see what

they’ve got.

“He has to play more,” guard Dwyane Wade said. “I think everyone wants to see him get comfortable. We’ve all seen he’s not afraid to shoot. He’s aggressive. He’s a 3-point shooter. He doesn’t lack confidence at all. As he continues to get comfortable with his role and his role is expanded or whatever the case may be, we’ll all get a chance to see what the young guy can be.”

Hoiberg acknowledged that day may eventually come – “we talk about it every day with our rotations and what we want to do,” he said. But it’s hard to do with the Bulls (31-32) struggling to maintain their playoff standing. They are tied with the Pistons for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Magic at Amway Center.

“We’ll continue to see how it goes,” Hoiberg said. “He’s still trying to fig-

ure his way. He’s trying to get comfortable with what we’re doing. In talking to him, he’s starting to feel more comfortable each time he goes out there.

Jerian [Grant] has played pretty well for the most part as a starter. He’s shot the ball at a pretty high clip. But I think Payne’s showing he’s got a chance to be a good, solid player.”

The Bulls already are seeing the difference playing time and a defined role can make in Bobby Portis. The second-year forward has been a much bigger factor since being inserted as a starter after Gibson’s departure.

“It’s helped me tremendously,” Portis said. “Just to know I’m going to play, that’s the biggest thing for me. Earlier in the season I didn’t really know if I was going to play and sometimes I would come in just trying to stay ready to play. Now I have a more defined role and I’m very confident with it.”

The easy thing – the logical thing – sometimes the only thing you can do as a defenseman when a guy such as Connor McDavid is flying full speed in your direction, is to put your stick on him. Hook him. Slash him. Trip him. Give him the old can-opener move. Just stop him somehow.

“You watch old clips of Brian Leetch, and he’d make a great play by putting his stick in between the guy’s stick and his arm, or putting his stick between a guy’s legs,” Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith said. “But that would be a penalty now, where before, that’s what they taught. You’re not really allowed to use your stick the way you used to be able to use your stick to prevent goals and to defend. Now you’ve got to be able to skate and use your speed.”

And few teams do that as well as the Hawks. For all the keys to their success over the years – top-end talent up front, well-structured team defense, excellent goaltending and all sorts of intangibles – one im-

“The coaches emphasize it,” defensive forward Dennis Rasmussen said. “We try to work with our sticks on the ice and not take stupid penalties. We work with our sticks instead of just using our bodies. You’ve still got to use your body to separate guys from the puck sometimes, but we’re pretty smart about it. It’s something the coaches really work with us on, especially when you first arrive to the team.”

It goes beyond just being smart, though. For years, the Hawks have been one of the top puck-possession teams in the league, and if you have the puck, you’re usually not clutching, grabbing, hooking, tripping or retaliating. And beyond that, the Hawks simply aren’t a physical team. They’re built on skill, not brawn, so there are fewer opportunities to take penalties such as interference and boarding.

Hits aren’t a terribly reliable stat, varying from arena to arena, but the Hawks are dead last in the category, with 928 of them – fewer than half what the league-leading Los

Frazier has high praise for Anderson ‘He’s right there with any shortstop,’ third baseman says

sgreenberg@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Todd Frazier is expected to make his Cactus League debut Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Camelback Ranch.

That means the White Sox finally will have their biggest home run bat back in the lineup. It also means Frazier, returning from a strained oblique muscle on his left side, will be – for four or five innings, anyway – back in his customary spot at third base.

And it means Tim Anderson had better clean out his ears.

Anderson, a 23-year-old shortstop preparing for his second major league season, quietly was one of the American League’s top rookies in 2016.

Whether or not he could have been as successful as he was without Frazier constantly chirping at him is hard to say.

Actually, there is no question the veteran was a huge help to Anderson in the field, positioning him before and during at-bats. Anderson – who played only two seasons of baseball in high school, neither at shortstop – needed the help, and likely still does.

“I say, ‘Tim, eventually you’re going to have to start going with your gut on what

these hitters do,’ something I learned myself from Scott Rolen,” Frazier said. “Sometimes (Tigers star) Miguel Cabrera goes the opposite way, sometimes he doesn’t. When he’s in that mode of pulling the ball, let’s me see if he’s going to move over himself, or am I going to have to keep telling him?

“Right now, it’s fine. I don’t mind. Eventually, I’m going to

look over and he’s going to be in the right spot.”

If Anderson is going to blow up into a full-fledged star – many believe he will – his rough edges will have to be smoothed over at the plate, too. He had a nice-looking .283 batting average and showed flashes of explosive power to go with his obvious speed, but the strikeouts were awfully high (117) and the walks awfully low (13) in 410 rookie at-bats.

“The word is, ‘He strikes out a lot and doesn’t walk much,’ but that’s for people outside this locker room,” Anderson said. “I can’t really control what other people think about me, but I can control getting better. Things happen as you grow and mature. I’m still growing.”

Anderson’s favorite shortstop to watch is Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor. He’s a fan of the Cubs’ Addison Russell, too, and can envision a time when there’s robust debate about who’s the No. 1 shortstop in Chicago.

“I’ve got to find out what separates me from those other guys,” he said. “I’m big on finding ways to separate your-

self – speed, bat, defense, whatever.”

Frazier believes his infield partner is “right there with any shortstop” measuring by pure talent. He even dares to liken Anderson to the great Ozzie Smith.

“I’m not saying he’s there yet, but he can emulate that,” Frazier said. “Even when he’s not in the right position, he can get to the ball so quickly and has such a nice release. He needs to work on his (back) flip, though.”

That, and a few other things. Frazier will be chirping at him.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll be over there to shake Timmy up when he needs it.”

Note: Starting pitchers Derek Holland and Michael Kopech got some simulated game action in Tuesday, which was an off day for the Sox. Working with catcher Omar Narvaez, Holland threw 50 pitches over three-plus “innings,” focusing on fastball and changeup location. The 20-year-old Kopech was up and down three times and threw 45 pitches, emphasizing fastball command and his feel for his changeup.

WBC matters to players, but scheduling issues won’t go away

The Associated Press Victor Martinez was just starting spring training in Florida last month, and already he was feeling the pressure over the World Baseball Classic.

“I don’t know, man,” the veteran slugger said softly. “I think they’re going to have to find a different time to do this.”

The Detroit slugger is on the roster for Venezuela, which begins round-robin play in the WBC on Friday night against Puerto Rico. His concerns about the timing of the event aren’t exactly unique.

Now more than a decade old, this international tournament featuring some of the game’s biggest stars is taking place for the fourth time, but as much as players look forward to the opportunity, it has become increasingly clear that there’s no perfect time and format for this type of competition.

“Coming up with a time to do it, I’m

sure is the most confounding part for everybody,” Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said. “It’s a shame because it’s such a great idea, you know like the World Cup in soccer.”

With so many great players from all over the world, baseball seems like an ideal sport for this type of tournament, but while the WBC receives plenty of interest in Asia and Latin America, it hasn’t totally caught on in the United States, where soccer’s Terry Francona World Cup, the Olympic basketball and hockey tournaments and even golf’s Ryder Cup usually draw a decent amount of anticipation.

“I would like to get the WBC to the point where everyone views it as a premier international event,” commissioner Rob Manfred said a few weeks ago at a spring training event. “I’m going to both Korea and Japan. One of the reasons I’m making that trip is, in

those countries, (there is) tremendous support and interest in this event, and we need to make sure we get the same kind of interest and support here in the United States. I think the key to that is having a competitive, successful team from the United States.”

In Tokyo on Tuesday, Manfred pushed back against the idea that the WBC’s future is shaky, pointing out how popular the event is around the world. Perhaps it would be taken more seriously in the U.S. if the Americans fared better – they never have finished higher than fourth.

This year’s U.S. roster, managed

by Jim Leyland, includes big names such as Andrew McCutchen, Giancarlo Stanton and Paul Goldschmidt. The pitching staff, however, is lacking quite a few stars.

“We’re missing a lot of the best pitchers that we have,” said U.S. second baseman Ian Kinsler of the Tigers.

“You look at (Clayton) Kershaw and David Price and Chris Sale and Rick

Porcello and (Justin) Verlander. You could go on and on.”

None of those aces are on the staff, which underscores one of the event’s biggest challenges – avoiding wear and tear on pitchers who have a long major league season to worry about. In this era of innings limits and heightened sensitivity to pitch counts, everyone’s workload is an issue.

There are rules in place at the WBC limiting pitch counts, but while those restrictions can protect pitchers from overuse, they also contribute to the sense that the top players aren’t able to compete at their highest level in this tournament – which is unfortunate, since players do seem genuinely excited about the chance to participate.

“When the guys get on their teams with their fellow countrymen, and they put on the uniforms, they want to win,” said Brad Ausmus, who managed Israel’s WBC team before being hired by Detroit in 2013. “It’s not an exhibition.

There’s a lot of pride that’s involved.”

Anthony Rizzo has a face any franchise would love.

To call Rizzo the face of the Cubs’ franchise might be a stretch, only because this team has so many “franchise” faces: Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez and on and on.

Rizzo, 27, was not the first player acquired by Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer when they took over Cubs baseball operations in the fall of 2011, but he was the most important at the time.

Five years later, Rizzo has taken his place among both the franchise faces and team leaders.

“Everyone leads in their own different way,” he said early in spring training. “You’ve got quieter guys. You’ve got guys who are louder. You’ve got guys who do it by example.

We do a good job, and Joe does a really good job of getting guys in and out and giving guys days off. Everything. Everything from the facilities to the whole staff from the Dominican to Joe. Everyone in between is all in.

“Honestly, I think that anyone who puts this jersey on knows the feeling. Just because we won the World Series, (it) isn’t a different feeling than anyone else who puts this jersey on. It’s still the same feeling.”

Purdue’s Swanigan, Gophers’ Pitino AP Big Ten top honorees

Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan is The Associated Press player of the year in the Big Ten Conference and Minnesota’s Richard Pitino is its coach of the year.

Swanigan was a unanimous pick for both player of the year and the AP all-Big Ten team, also announced Tuesday, in voting by 13 journalists covering the conference.

Michigan State freshman Miles Bridges was the choice of all voters for newcomer of the year.

NFL suspends Jets WR Jalin Marshall for 4 games

NEW YORK – The NFL has suspended New York Jets receiver Jalin Marshall for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.

The suspension of the second-year player from Ohio State was announced Tuesday. Earlier, the New York Daily News reported he tested positive for Adderall.

“I really just want to apologize for this mistake. I inadvertently took medication without an exemption from the league on one occasion,” Marshall tweeted. “It has not happened since & will not happen again. Already looking forward to 2017 and doing whatever I can to help this team win.”

Lehman, who was second in the conference in rebounding (10.0 a game) and third in points (18.3) and assists (6.6), finished as the runner-up behind Kent State’s Larissa Lurken for MAC Player of the Year. She broke the NIU record with 17 double-doubles and notched two triple-doubles on the season.

NIU guard Janae Poisson was named to the All-Freshman Team on Tuesday.

Poisson provided scoring off the bench for the Huskies, averaging 8.6 points a game, and had a breakout performance Jan. 11 at Kent State. Against the Golden Flashes, she scored a season-high 27 points, made four 3-pointers and was a perfect 5 for 5 from the free-throw line.

WASHINGTON – As part of an ongoing effort to broaden its scope, the Big Ten will converge a few blocks from the White House this week to crown a new basketball champion.

Long a fixture in the Midwest, the Big Ten tournament will be in the nation’s capital for the first time.

“It’s going to be some big-time basketball,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. “We’re just glad we get to do it in our backyard, which should be fun.”

By adding Maryland and Rutgers to the conference in 2014, the Big Ten formally extended its footprint to the East Coast. This year’s tournament, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday, will be at Verizon Center. Next year’s tourney will be at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“It really is an example of a traditional conference that continues to change,” Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said in October, when all 14 teams gathered in Washington for Media Day. “Our actions are aligned with our plans. This is a very important part of the country for us.”

Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State (which joined in 1990) will have the luxury of traveling to the tournament by bus.

“We’re excited about not having to get on a plane,” Turgeon said. “It’s great for our fans.”

Pork shoulder a hands-off dish that can feed a crowd

I was talking with a friend about perfect meals for entertaining, and we went through the usual suspects: lasagnas, chili, tenderloins. And then he mentioned his favorite go-to entertaining dish was a pork butt or shoulder left in a low oven for so long it practically fell apart. A cut of meat so flexible the cooking time could be stretched by an hour, or three, and the roast wouldn’t be any worse for the wear. A roast that could be plunked on the table whenever everyone was ready to eat.

Long ago, a chef had explained to him meat likes to be cooked at around the temperature it reaches when it is done. While I don’t think that is always the case (flame-kissed steaks and burgers anyone?), it made nice sense when I thought in terms of a big, tough hunk of meat, like this pork shoulder, which needs low and slow cooking to make it turn from impossibly tough to tender.

Rushing the process won’t help; you’ve got to keep the heat low and

the time long. The best part? This is free time you can spend reading, dancing, sleeping, cleaning a closet, saving kittens from trees.

You can leave the roast in the very low oven for an extra 1 to 3 hours with no repercussions. If you feel it needs a bit more browning or caramelization at the end, turn the heat up to 450 degrees F. for 15 minutes before pulling the roast out of the oven, and then make sure it rests for a bit so the fibers can relax and the juices regroup.

If all has gone as planned, the meat will be so tender the slices won’t hold together. That’s part of the appeal.

Fall-apart Roasted Pork Shoulder with Rosemary, Mustard and Garlic Serves 10 to 12 Start to finish: 8 hours (mostly hands off)

2 tablespoons chopped garlic 3 anchovies, rinsed 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons coarse Dijon mustard 1 6-pound boneless pork shoulder, trimmed of excess fat and tied In a small food processor combine the garlic, anchovies, rosemary, salt and pepper.

Add the olive oil and process until it forms a paste, scraping down the sides. (If you don’t have a mini food processor, just mince the ingredients and then transfer them to a bowl. Use a fork to mash them into the olive oil.) Remove the blade and use a fork or spoon to stir in the mustard. Rub the paste all over the pork shoulder, loosely cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate from 2 to 24 hours.

Bring the pork to room temperature, which will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour, and toward the end preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Place the pork in a shallow roasting pan and roast, fat side down, for 30 minutes, until the top starts to brown.

Turn the heat down to 250 degrees F. and continue to cook for 6 to 8 hours, until the middle of the roast registers 180 degrees F. on an internal thermometer, and as you slide the thermometer in you can feel that the meat is very tender throughout. About

1/2 hour before you are ready to call it done, pour off most of the juices from the pan into a heatproof container, like a Pyrex measuring cup. Place this in the fridge, where the fat will rise to the top.

When the meat is cooked, if you think that the outside of the roast could use a bit more crust/brownness, turn the heat back up to 450 degrees F. and let it cook for another 15 to 20 minutes, to give the outside a crunchier texture.

Remove from the oven and let sit for about 20 minutes, especially if you have raised the heat at the end. Spoon the fat off the reserved juices in the fridge and pour the cooking juices into a serving pitcher or bowl (warm it in the microwave or in a small pot if you like).

Slice the pork as thinly or thickly as you like, knowing the meat will fall apart at least slightly. Sprinkle a bit of salt on the sliced meat before serving, and pass the pan juices on the side to drizzle.

Bacon-Wrapped Beef Tenderloin Serves: 10 Start to Finish: 90 minutes

1 trimmed tenderloin, center cut, about 4-5 pounds Olive oil Salt and pepper 1 pound thin-cut bacon, at room temperature Fresh thyme leaves for garnish Green Peppercorn and Thyme sauce

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Brush tenderloin with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Tuck the small ends of the tenderloin under each side to make sure the roast is about the same thickness all over.

Beginning at one side, wrap the bacon around the tenderloin, overlapping the pieces of bacon so that they stick to each other.

Make sure that the ends of the bacon are tucked under.

Place bacon-wrapped tenderloin on a rack set into a pan with the ends of the bacon touching the rack so the bacon doesn’t unravel.

Roast at 325 degrees F. for 60 minutes or until a thermometer reaches 125 degrees F. Remove and let rest for 20 minutes, covered with foil. If you use thin-cut bacon, it should be crisp, but if you want the bacon to be

Combine the butter, vinegar, shallot, cognac and mustard in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. When the liquid is reduced, add 2 tablespoons heavy cream and whisk until it is incorporated. This addition of the cream will help prevent the sauce from breaking.

Next start adding the butter, cube by cube.

Whisk continually. When the first cube of butter is almost melted, add another and repeat until all of the butter is incorporated.

Add the cream and a dash of Tabasco if using, a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper.

Add about 5 sprigs of thyme and let sit in the hot sauce for 10 minutes.

While the mixture is still warm, strain through a fine strainer. Mix in the thyme leaves and peppercorns if using. Use immediately or keep in a pitcher in a warm water bath. If it breaks, you can reincorporate with a little heavy cream or by using an immersion blender.

Sophisticated food still can be easy weeknight meal

Question: Why does sophisticated food always have to be complicated?

Answer: Trick question; it doesn’t.

Case in point, these pork chops.

You quickly sear the chops up, and finish by making a rich, creamy, leek pan sauce in the same skillet you used to brown the chops in. The seared chops then finish cooking in the sauce, and you have a one-dish meal that you might be pleased to have served up to you at a restaurant.

If you don’t have fresh rosemary or thyme, use half the dried amount of each. And if there is a border of fat on the chops, use a knife to score it (cut vertical lines across the sides of the fat, without cutting into the meat itself) so the chops stay nice and flat as they cook.

When you sear meat, try to avoid moving it around and flipping it frequently, which prevents that great caramelized crust from forming. Peek when you need to, but don’t keep fussing around with it.

Pan Seared Pork Chops with Madeira and Leek Cream Sauce Serves 4 Start to finish: 25 minutes

4 large, bone-in, 1-inch thick pork chops (about 3 pounds total) Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 shallots, minced 1 cup sliced leeks (white and light green parts only), well rinsed 1/4 cup Madeira wine 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

1 teaspoon fresh rosemary leaves 1 cup chicken broth 3/4 cup heavy cream Hot cooked mashed potatoes, rice, quinoa or other grains to serve Chopped fresh parsley to garnish (optional) Bring the pork chops to room temperature and season generously with salt and pepper.

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat and sear the chops without moving them until browned on both sides, about 3 minutes on each side (they will not be fully cooked, but still pink in the middle).

Transfer the pork chops to a plate, and tent with foil to keep warm.

Reduce the heat to medium-low, and add the shallots and leeks to the pan. Sauté for 10 minutes until they are tender and golden brown. Turn the heat back up to medium-high, add the Madeira, thyme and

rosemary, and scrape to release any bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add the chicken broth and cream and bring to a simmer, then return the pork chops to the pan, nestling them into the sauce among the leeks, and continue to simmer until the pork is just cooked through, with a hint of pink in the middle, to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F., about 3 more minutes.

The sauce will have reduced and thickened a bit.

Let the chops sit in the sauce for a couple of minutes off of the heat. Serve them with the starch of your choice, with the leek sauce ladled over the top of the pork. Finish with a sprinkle of parsley, if desired.

As much as I love prime rib, beef tenderloin is much easier to prepare, easier to carve and the leftovers are good cold.

The only challenge with beef tenderloin is it is lean (little to no fat), and it is best served rare. I wanted to do something that looked a little fancier than plain grilled tenderloin but was just as easy to execute. I thought about one of my favorite ways to prepare filet – bacon-wrapped – and thought, let’s see what happens if I wrap the whole tenderloin in bacon, mummy style.

I proceeded to wrap room-temperature bacon around the tenderloin, tucking the end pieces under the center of the tenderloin to make sure it all was roughly the same size. When bacon is room temperature, it will stick to itself, and you don’t need toothpicks to secure it. Make sure to buy a standard thin-cut bacon and make each piece slightly overlap the other, so it will bake into a beautiful bacon crust.

Natural remedies available for pain Dear Doctor: Are there natural remedies for arthritis? Exercises that could help? My pain is in the upper arms and shoulders.

Dear Reader: Osteoarthritis, the kind that you’re describing, is caused by degeneration of the cartilage within a joint. Without the cartilage, one bone rubs upon the other, leading to pain and degeneration of the bone.

Doctors typically recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin; acetaminophen; and, more rarely, opiates. But NSAIDs can increase the risk of stomach ulcers and kidney problems when used chronically; acetaminophen at high doses can cause liver problems when used chronically; and opiate medications can lead to addiction. So I can understand your desire to look for an alternative for the pain.

The supplements chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine have been used for osteoarthritis for years. Chondroitin is one of the building blocks of cartilage in our body, so many people naturally believe that taking chondroitin can decrease the pain of arthritis.

A 2015 review of 43 randomized trials compared the use of chondroitin alone or in combination with glucosamine against the use of a placebo. Most of these studies looked at treatment for arthritis of the knees, with some looking at arthritis of the hips and hands. The studies measured pain on a 100-point scale. The use of chondroitin was found to be beneficial, whether with or without glucosamine, showing a small 8-point difference in pain compared with placebo. It didn’t ease the stiffness and lack of mobility associated with arthritis, however.

In another study, a randomized trial of 606 patients with pain from osteoarthritis of the knee compared the use of glucosamine with chondroitin against the anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib (Celebrex). After six months, both groups found a greater than 50 percent

What was interesting about the study was that it took a while for the glucosamine/ chondroitin to work. At one to four months, Celebrex was much better at improving pain, but at six months it was no different than the glucosamine/chondroitin combination. So with the use of glucosamine and chondroitin, it is important to be patient.

The supplements MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) are anti-inflammatory agents that have been studied in arthritis of the knees without evidence of benefit, but it’s possible they could decrease pain in the joints of the hands.

Arnica montana is a plant-based therapy that has some potential in topical use for pain relief, with one study finding a slight benefit for arthritis of the hands. Topical use of capsaicin cream, made from chili peppers, has shown potential as well, specifically for arthritis of the knee. Other natural remedies and supplements, such as fish oil, are touted for arthritis, but their use has not been well studied.

As for exercises, I would recommend physical therapy to increase your range of motion for your shoulder and to help increase your muscular strength. Yoga, Pilates and tai chi can also be beneficial, potentially increasing your range of motion without undue stress on your already aching joints. Over time, you may well see a difference in your ability to function with less pain.

Jeanne My husband Phillips and I have been married for 35 years. My husband has good friends who are women, and I have never objected when he stayed with them when he traveled from our home to Michigan.

One of the women he stays with called and they talked for hours. That’s not right is it? My husband says she’s just a good friend and it’s only conversation.

Suddenly South sees that he has no club losers. He might jump straight to six spades, but perhaps should content himself with five spades, which North ought to raise with such good red suits -- South must have excellent trumps to be slamming without all of those red honors.

How did declarer plan the play after West led the spade jack?

South saw that he needed trumps to be 3-2 and to have some luck in the red suits. However, there were transportation difficulties, and he did not want to rely on a red-suit finesse.

Declarer spotted an unusually good line. He won the first trick with the spade ace, cashed the club ace and ruffed a club. The next card he called for surprised everyone at the table, particularly East: dummy’s diamond 10. East took this with his queen and returned a second trump, but declarer won in his hand, ruffed another club, cashed the top hearts, ruffed a heart, drew West’s last trump and claimed. He took four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, one club and two club ruffs.
