Obamacare was great, terrible to me POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS “We must work together to save Americans from Obamacare.”

– President Donald Trump Obamacare was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

It’s also one of the worst.

Back in 2013, I was working full time at a job that didn’t offer health insurance, freelancing part time at a job that offered a minimal “wellness plan,” and spending whatever time was left over on starting my own business.

Small wonder I got sick.

Way sicker than my “wellness plan,” which capped yearly benefits at $1,000, could handle.

Fortunately, the Affordable Care Act was about to kick in.

For $700 a month, I got health insurance, real health insurance, just like the health insurance I’d received through my previous five employers, the insurance plans I’d dutifully paid into for more than three decades yet rarely used.

The timing couldn’t have been better: Obamacare started Jan. 1, 2014. I started on chemo a week later.

My first foray into government-mandated health care ended three months and about 3,000 maximum out-of-pocket dollars later, when I landed a job at a place that offered an employer-supported insurance plan at half the cost. Problem solved. At least, until I got too sick to work and my COBRA ran out at the end of 2015.

When I went back on Obamacare in 2016, things had changed. The premiums were a lot more expensive. In 2014, for $700 a month you could get a top-of-the line gold plan with a $1,650 deductible. By 2016, that same $700 a month bought a silver plan with a $3,500 deductible.

That wasn’t the only difference. When the marketplace debuted in 2014, Will County residents could choose from dozens of plans provided by at least 10 major insurance carriers. Two years later, more than half of those carriers had pulled out of Illinois. Finding a plan that both my local doctor and Chicago oncologist would accept was nearly impossible.

Fortunately I was able to find one plan that met all my needs from a company I’d never heard of: Land of Lincoln Health. It was a great insurer, worth every cent. After I maxed out, they covered all my bills. I never had a

GUEST VIEW Bill Wimbiscus problem, never had a complaint … right up until the day the company went bankrupt 10 months later. Another casualty in the evolution of Obamacare.

So now it’s 2017. That same $700 a month now only gets you a bronze plan with a $7,000 deductible. Which means I need to shell out a total of $15,400 before the benefits kick in.

That’s daunting enough, but even more so when you consider my wife’s bronze premium runs about $920 a month.

As if that wasn’t enough, this year there were only two companies to choose between in our area. My local doctor and Chicago oncologist accepted neither, so I had to drop both physicians and get new ones.

So when Trump said Obamacare is broken, I tend to agree.

Granted, I’m not your typical Obamacare enrollee: I’m aging, and I’m unsubsidized.

Of the record 11.5 million people who signed up for Obamacare this year, about 80 percent get government subsidies, many of whom pay $50 to $100 a month for premiums … at least, if you can trust some of the conflicting information on the internet.

Most of them are younger than I am. Most of them either make less money than I do or have dependents. And, truth be told, most need insurance as much or even more than I do. How any of them cover a bronze deductible is beyond me.

So now House Speaker Paul Ryan and the Republicans are going to “fix” Obamacare.

Yeah, I can hardly wait.

Here’s a thought: force everyone in Congress to relinquish their dirt-cheap federally supported commercial insurance plans and go on whatever alternative they come up with.

Truth is, if you’re stuck in Obamacare, there’s probably only one way out: find a job with an employer-supported commercial insurance plan.

Either that, or make sure you never get sick.

Candidates discuss goals for mayor’s office of Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Voters will have a choice to make come April among three candidates vying for the office of Sycamore mayor, each with a distinct history of serving their community.

The candidates share some overlapping ideas, such as a desire to keep taxes low, but their platforms each highlight different goals for running and improving the city.

The Sycamore Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the first mayoral candidate forum at 5:30 p.m. March 23 in the Regale Center, 1241/2 S. California St. in Sycamore.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a meet-and-greet with candidates for mayor, alderman and city clerk, with a question-and-answer session for mayoral candidates at 6 p.m.

The Sycamore mayor earns a salary of $20,000 a year plus $5,000 a year for serving as liquor commissioner. Mayor Ken Mundy is not seeking re-election after three terms in office.

Rick “Spider” Kramer, a 4th Ward alderman for six years, has lived in Sycamore for 14 years and owns Spider Tattooz in downtown Sycamore. He also is a volunteer firefighter in Cortland.

Kramer said a previous alderman suggested he run for City Council after being impressed with the regulations he helped establish for tattooing in Sycamore. His shop was the first such business in town.

He said that when the mayoral seat opened up, he thought it would be the perfect opportunity to

take the next step as a community leader.

“I devoted my lifetime for taking care of people,” Kramer said. “I’ve got 43 years as a volunteer firefighter. So I’ve seen it all; I’ve saved a lot, and I even delivered two babies.”

Kramer said his main goal as mayor would be to improve public safety. His ideas include working with the park district and DeKalb and Kane counties to install surveillance cameras in isolated, wooded areas to catch potential criminals.

Kramer said he also wants to do more research into police and fire department training funds.

“If we can come up with a little more money to send, say, three or four guys instead of one guy, it would be more for them to bring the training back to the rest of their crew, and that’s pretty important to me,” he said.

Curt Lang, a 1st Ward alderman for six years, moved to Sycamore in 1976. He manages Courtview Dental Center in Sycamore and also is a property developer in the city.

He serves as treasurer on the Sycamore Library Board, was a Sycamore School District 427 board member for eight years and has been involved with community groups including the Sycamore Rotary Club.

Lang said he hopes his experience as a business owner will give him the perspective to help business leaders thrive in Sycamore.

“Caring for patients in the dental business gives me a listening ear to people’s concerns,” he said.

“As mayor, I hope I would have the same compassion to listen to people’s concerns.”

Lang said as mayor he would focus on keeping taxes balanced and fostering business growth.

“One of my main goals is to keep businesses healthy so property taxes are kept at a minimum,”

he said. “Thriving businesses will make [Sycamore] a place where people want to live.”

Lang said he also would want to work with S District 427 on keeping the schools financially healthy, as districts around Illinois have struggled with limited state funding.

“In our district, we’ve had to cut personnel,” Lang said. “I’d like the city to be a source of support, encouragement and a positive influence on teachers and staff.”

Candy Smith, coming off a 16-year run as Sycamore city clerk, is a lifelong Sycamore resident and served as an alderman for two years before taking over the clerk’s office.

“I love city business,” Smith said. “I know it sounds dull, but I just like the business of the city.”

She said she was first inspired to get involved in city government from her time on the library board, and knowing she was ready to retire as city clerk in 2017, she decided it was time to run for mayor.

“I don’t think I’m quite done serving yet,” Smith said. “I’m not quite ready to totally retire, but I don’t want to sit in an office anymore. So I want to get out with the people and continue on with the meetings.”

Smith said one of her priorities would be addressing the city’s infrastructure issues, such as repairing the water and sewer systems and streets.

“We’re addressing the streets a little bit better, but this is an old community,” she said.

Smith also said she would push for the city to implement business licenses, something she has suggested for safety purposes as city clerk.

“We don’t want to encumber businesses by any means, but we don’t always know what’s behind the walls,” she said. “If the firefighters get called in, they don’t always know what’s in the buildings.”

Sycamore City Council considering proposed street maintenance budget

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council heard a proposal Monday for spending more than $3 million on street maintenance and infrastructure repair projects over the summer.

The $3,357,000 cost would come from various funds, including $357,000 from the motor fuel tax fund, $2.65 million from the street maintenance fund, $100,000 from the capital assistance fund, $125,000 from the tax increment financing fund and $125,000 from the sales tax distributive fund.

The 2017 street maintenance program marks the largest investment

the city has made in residential streets, according to the consideration.

“None of this is debt related,” City Manager Brian Gregory said. “This is all funds that are on hand that we’re going to utilize to make a tremendous impact on our infrastructure, mainly our roads.”

Gregory presented a list of about 30 priority repair projects to the council, including recommended maintenance on portions of 22 streets and two parking lots.

Filling cracks in the streets would cost $50,000, while the city would spend $17,500 to participate in DeKalb County’s project that uses a sand

and oil application to extend the life of streets a few years after they are paved.

Gregory said the most expensive project would be reconstructing the storm sewer and water main on Ellen Street, which would use the $125,000 from the sales tax distributive fund.

He said the street maintenance program should be finished before Pumpkin Festival, but it will likely take a few weeks longer than usual because of the extent of the projects.

“The question always comes when do you get caught up on streets, or when do you get caught up on infrastructure, you never really do,” Gregory said. “As soon as you put it in it

starts to deteriorate at varying levels, so to make a big infusion like this really helps us to gain on that.”

Because of the cost of the street maintenance projects, the city will not be limiting construction bids to local companies.

Alan Bauer, 1st Ward alderman, said he was supportive of this method because it does not restrict potentially favorable bidders.

“I think that’s a good thing,” Bauer said. “If we get good, competitive bids, we’ll be able to get more done with the same amount of money.”

Gregory said bids would be presented to the council May 1 for approval.

Barbara Jean Anthenat, 76, passed away Friday, March 4, 2017. She was born September 14, 1940 in Adams Twp. To the late Earl and Gladys (Jensen) Anthenat.

Graduated from Sandwich High School in 1958. Worked for New Idea in Sandwich for many years and retired from Aurora Housing Authority after many years of service.

She was an avid reader, and collector of Elvis memorabilia, Precious Moments figurines, and Native American memorabilia, and enjoyed crocheting. She loved to travel in her earlier years for two weeks every summer with her best friends. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews. She was kind-hearted and generous. Barbara loved the Sandwich Fair and never missed a year even before she was born.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Michael “Max” Maxwell, a candidate for 6th Ward alderman, has withdrawn from the April 4 election, leaving his opponent, Mike Verbic, unopposed.

“I announce this with a heavy heart, however, I don’t feel I will be able to commit myself to the position properly,” Maxwell said in a written statement to the Daily Chronicle. “Over the last four months, I have attempted to dedicate 10 to 20 hours a week

aside for campaigning and have concluded it is simply untenable against my work and travel schedule.”

He added that because of the amount of travel he does for work, he would only be able to attend one of the next five candidates forums and it would be irresponsible for him to continue.

Verbic, a former president of the DeKalb School District 428 board, said that his campaign plans would not change leading up to election day.

“I wish [Maxwell] and his family all the best, and I hope he considers serving his community in another way in the future,” Verbic said. “My plans are to

continue with all of the events, visiting people doorto-door and all else we had scheduled for up until the election.”

Verbic will take the seat left by current 6th Ward Alderman Dave Baker.

“My most sincere thanks to all those who have supported, guided and educated me along the way,” Maxwell said. “I implore everyone to vote in this election and continue to be active participants in your city government. There has never been a more critical time to collectively work together to preserve and improve our city.”

“There were also ideas from the engineer, such as snack areas, but while there’s no interest in pursuing those as of right now, you never know what the future holds.”

The sanitary district will seek bids on its modernization plan March 15, and the work will take a few years to complete, leaving an uncertain timeline for the sled hill’s completion.

Sanitary district officials estimate the project will cost $52 million. It will largely be financed with a low-interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, with district reserve funds covering about $12 million in early payments on the loan.

“Once we know when the sanitary district starts construction, we’ll know when we need to go out to bid,” Emken said. “They may not be producing dirt until next year, but if they’re doing it this fall then we need to be ready to do it by then. Our timeline is contingent on their timeline.”

DeKALB – Design plans for a 40-foottall sledding hill in Hopkins Park made of dirt spoil from excavation work at the neighboring DeKalb Sanitary District were approved by the DeKalb Park District board during a special meeting Friday.

Rockford-based Missman Inc. introduced the designs for the project, which has been considered by the park district for years. The work involves digging new pits for aeration

tanks as part of the sanitary district’s plan to update its wastewater treatment plant.

The hill will be made of an estimated 100,000 cubic yards of dirt, which would be enough to fill about 5,600 dump trucks, and will be located on a stretch of land northeast of the water treatment plant that the district rents from the sanitary district.

Superintendent of Parks and Development Mat Emken said the total length of the hill from its peak to the end of the runout zone would be about 475 feet and would include a chain link

D-428 board will hear updates on audit, superintendent search

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428’s search for a new superintendent and an fiscal 2016 financial report and audit will be highlighted during Tuesday’s board meeting.

A representative of the Illinois Association of School Boards, the firm helping to find a new district superintendent, will give an update on the search process to replace Superintendent Doug Moeller after his resignation at the end of April.

The board selected the organization during a special meeting in February after hearing presentations from three potential firms.

Board President Victoria Newport said IASB will post information on the district to its website and publications around the country.

Once the job has been posted for three weeks, six to eight candidates will be vetted and brought to the school district to interview with staff, community members and parents. From their suggestions, three candidates will interview with the board.

Moeller, who is resigning at the end of April after being on paid administrative leave since September after accusations of sexual harassment by DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano.

Brad Hawk was selected as an interim superintendent and is more than halfway through the maximum 100 days of his temporary term.

The board will also hear a presentation on the Audit and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for fiscal 2016.

The district ended the fiscal year with an operating fund balance of $22,486,894, which is 28.4 percent of expenditures. Board policy states the operating fund balance should be between 15 percent to 25 percent of operating expenditures.

Because of the state’s budget impasse, the district missed out on $1.8 million in state revenue owed for the fiscal year. The state eventually disbursed $1.7 million on Dec. 30, which was applied toward fiscal 2017 numbers.

The son of Leon Theodore and Evelyn M. Irving. Bob served in the United States Army with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on October 2, 1967. Rapper gives $1M to Chicago schools

CHICAGO – Chance the Rapper’s unusual intervention into Chicago Public Schools’ funding crisis took an even more curious turn Monday when the Grammy winner presented a $1 million check to city schools and urged Gov. Bruce Rauner to use his executive powers to help the nation’s third-largest district.

The Republican governor, a former venture capitalist, responded by noting his own philanthropy and floating Chicago school funding ideas that would face tough odds in the Democratic-controlled Legislature. Illinois has gone two years without a budget, the longest such stalemate of any state in nearly a century.

The back-and-forth came after a meeting Friday between Rauner and the artist – whose real name is Chancelor Bennett – that left the rapper visibly agitated. Chance asked for the meeting after he won three Grammys last month, including best new artist, and Rauner tweeted congratulations.

The Chicago native stopped at an elementary school near where he grew up to announce the donation to a schools’ foundation, calling himself a “public school kid.” He also accused Rauner of failing to present solutions without “caveats or ultimatums.”

City almost goes full week without fatal shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago nearly went a full week without a fatal shooting.

The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune reported the city had passed such a milestone on Sunday morning for the first time in more than five years.

However, that was before the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday afternoon reported the homicide of 22-year-old Antoine D. Watkins from multiple gunshot wounds. Police say they found him lying face down Saturday in a vacant lot about a block from where he lived in the Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side.

One option calls for using up most of Chicago’s special taxing district funds, set aside for capital projects, for a onetime infusion. The other would attach the funding to broader pension reform.

Chicago officials rejected both, saying Illinois’ school funding formula is fundamentally unfair to the largely minority and poor school district. CPS has sued the state over the calculation and argues the district is further penalized since it’s the only one in Illinois where local taxpayers, not the state, help pay teacher pension costs.

Chance also dismissed the plans, saying he wasn’t a politician.

“It’s not my job to propose any policy or be behind anything but the kids,” he said.

Rauner’s office issued a statement detailing his history of giving: roughly $7 million over 20 years to organizations benefiting Chicago students.

Before that fatal shooting, the last one had occurred Feb. 26.

Missing fisherman’s body found in Mississippi River

MONTROSE, Iowa – The body of one of two Iowa fishermen missing since their boat capsized Jan. 3 on the Mississippi River has been recovered by officials downstream.

Authorities said the body of 68-yearold Bill White Sr. of Argyle was spotted and pulled from the water Saturday just off a boat launch site in Hamilton, which is across the river from Keokuk.

The Hancock County, coroner said White drowned. The boat carrying White and his fellow commercial fisherman, 48-year-old Ron Wagner, of Montrose, was seen capsizing in the freezing cold water after they launched more than 10 miles upstream, near Montrose. Wagner’s body is still missing.

Trump signs revised anti-terror travel ban The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Without fanfare, President Donald Trump signed a scaled-back version of his controversial ban on many foreign travelers Monday, hoping to avoid a new round of lawsuits and outrage while fulfilling a central campaign promise. His order still bars new visas for people from six Muslim-majority countries and temporarily shuts down America’s refugee program.

The revised order, signed with none of the flourish of his first version, eliminates some of the most contentious aspects in an effort to surmount the court challenges that are sure to come. Trump’s first order, issued just a week after his inauguration, was halted by federal courts.

The new one leaves Iraq off the list of banned countries – at the urging of U.S. military and diplomatic leaders – but still affects would-be visitors and immigrants from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya. It also makes clear that current visa holders will not be impacted, and it removes language that would give priority to religious minorities – a provision some interpreted as a way to help Christians get into the U.S. while excluding Muslims.

The order won’t take effect until March 16 despite earlier warnings from Trump and his aides that any delay would put national security at risk by allowing the entry of “bad ‘dudes’” who want to harm the country.

The changes underscore the very different position the president finds himself in.

Five weeks ago, Trump dropped the first order with a bang, catching lawmakers and members of his administration by surprise. He signed the order in a high-profile ceremony at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes as Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis stood by.

This time around, the president skipped the usual public ceremony altogether. Instead, the administration chose to have Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Attorney General Jeff Sessions serve as the public faces of the rollout at a brief press announcement.

“I think today was about the implementation of it,” said Press Secretary Sean Spicer – at a briefing off camera.

Legal experts say the new order addresses some of the constitutional concerns raised by a federal appeals court about the initial ban but leaves room for more legal challenges.

“It’s much clearer about how it doesn’t apply to groups of immigrants with more clearly established constitutional rights,” University of Texas law professor Stephen Vladeck said. “That’s a really important step.”

Trump officials say the goal hasn’t changed: keeping wouldbe terrorists out of the United States while the government reviews vetting systems for refugees and visa applicants from certain parts of the world.

Tillerson said, “It is the president’s solemn duty to protect the American people, and with

this order President Trump is exercising his rightful authority to keep our people safe.”

The original travel ban led to instant chaos at airports as Homeland Security officials scrambled to interpret how it was to be implemented and some travelers were detained before being sent back overseas or blocked from getting on airplanes abroad. The order quickly became the subject of several legal challenges and was put on hold last month by a federal judge in Washington state.

The president repeatedly insisted he would continue to fight for the original order in court, even as aides worked to craft a new one. In the end, they chose to rescind the old order – though Spicer maintained the first was “100 percent legal and constitutional.”

Notably absent from Trump’s revised ban are repeated references to the death toll from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Critics of the original had noted the president appeared to use those attacks as evidence of danger from certain foreigners despite the fact that none of the men who hijacked jetliners that day were from any of the seven banned countries.

Poll: Americans split on admitting refugees

WASHINGTON – Where immigrants are concerned, James Wright is OK with people who are here legally, as well as illegally – if they haven’t committed crimes. But turn the talk specifically to the risks and benefits of admitting refugees to the U.S., and the New Jersey resident gives a fraught sigh.

“It’s hard not to be conflicted,” said Wright, 26, an independent who supports President Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban on certain foreigners.

“By no means do I want to be cruel and keep people out who need a safe place.

But we have to have a better system of thoroughly finding out who they are.”

Wright is part of a group of Americans a new survey suggests are making distinctions between legal immigrants who choose to be here and refugees – who are legal immigrants, too – fleeing persecution in their home countries.

A new poll by The Associated PressNORC Center for Public Affairs Research reflects that divide, with twothirds of the respondents saying the benefits of legal immigration generally outweigh the risks. But just over half – 52 percent – say refugees pose a great

Interviews with some of the poll’s participants suggest the distinction may be one of perception in an age of religious and politically inspired violence and 4.8 million refugees fleeing war-scarred Syria.

“Sometimes the vetting might not be quality,” said Randall Bagwell, 33, a Republican from of San Antonio, Texas, the state second to California in settling refugees between Oct. 1 and Jan. 31, according to the State Department.

“Nobody can do quality control when they’re just reacting immediately.”

Officials from the Pentagon and State Department had urged the White House to reconsider given Iraq’s key role in fighting the Islamic State group.

Also, the new order does not subject Syrians to an indefinite travel ban, as did the original.

Trump also has minimized talk of deporting all of the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally and suggested that he could be open to comprehensive immigration reform.

linked tougher immigration limits to a safer country, and on Monday signed a new travel ban that, in part, will suspend refugee travel to the U.S. for four months except for those already on their way to the U.S. The new order, which takes effect on March 16, will impose a 90-day ban on entry to the U.S. for people from Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen – all Muslim-majority nations – who are seeking new visas. It was Trump’s second effort at a travel ban. The first was blocked by the courts.

Also reflecting his hard line, Trump last week announced to Congress a new office to aid Americans and their families who are victims of immigrant violence. That’s despite years of studies that have shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than U.S.born people.

In the House, hard-right Freedom Caucus members – that’s the group that marched former Speaker John Boehner into a 2013 government shutdown and later toppled him – are battling against elements of the GOP leadership’s emerging health care draft such as refundable tax credits to buy insurance. If they’re unbending, it could be the death knell for the GOP’s health care efforts.

“Statements by small groups of Republicans saying, ‘Well, this is not acceptable to me’ – and that becomes how you negotiate – that’s just not a way to get to 218,” said GOP loyalist Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, referring to the magic number to pass legislation in the 435-seat House. “You can argue with the quarterback in the huddle, but once you go to the line, you really need to execute the play.”

What is more, circumstances are more difficult now than they were during the most recent successful burst of Republican-sponsored domestic legislation, when a unified Republican government in the early 2000s produced tax cuts, a major education bill, and the Medicare prescription drug benefit.

WASHINGTON – Republican ranks in Congress are thick with hard-right lawmakers elected to thwart former President Barack Obama and light on nuts-and-bolts legislators, especially those experienced in working with a GOP president.

That could prove to be a formidable challenge as Republicans make the transition from an opposition party to a governing one.

Tea party lawmakers who are used to fighting Obama – and sometimes their own leaders – now have to pull together as a team to try to advance President Donald Trump’s agenda into law, starting this week with repeal of the 2010 health care law and offering a possible replacement.

Conservative purity tests must get tossed out the window; instead the mandate is to figure out what can actually get enacted into law. That requires forging toward consensus – and willingly accepting lumps and losses in intra-GOP debates and voting for what compromise eventually emerges.

These are realities that some Republicans are learning more quickly than others.

“When you’re in the opposition, you get to judge every proposal against the ideal .... When you’re governing, you first have to ask, ‘Can it pass?’ And then you’ve got to ask, ‘Well, how does it compare to doing nothing?’” said Neil Bradley, a former House GOP aide who’s now a top policy expert at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “They haven’t quite made the adjustment from judging things against the ideal to judging proposals against doing nothing.”

Few congressional Republicans have experience serving under a Republican president – just 59 of 237 House Republicans served in the majority under former President George W. Bush in the early-to-mid-2000s.

Because they are unfamiliar with their new set of circumstances, some tea party purists – used to having their way or picking up their marbles and quitting the game – are now struggling with demands that they compromise.

Strains are already showing, as Republicans promising to repeal and replace Obama’s health care law simultaneously – backed by President Donald Trump – are at odds with conserva-

DeKALB – The owners of the newest arcade in DeKalb were inspired to open the family-friendly gaming spot by their 4-year-old daughter, Marie.

Cristina Campos and Abraham Tavera of DeKalb said Amigos Arcade will be a place where local children like their daughter can go to have fun.

“There seems to be a lot of taverns and a lot of bars, and there’s not very many places where you can just hang out with your family,” Campos said.

Amigos Arcade had its grand opening Wednesday at 122 S. First St. in DeKalb. However, the husband-andwife team plans to eventually move the arcade to another location.

Developer John Pappas intends to demolish the building and neighboring properties to construct an apartment complex and parking lot in place of the deteriorating Otto’s nightclub.

Campos said they hope to find a bigger location where they can sell food and expand their collection of arcade machines. Drinks, snacks and candy are available for sale at the current location in addition to complimentary popcorn.

Until the arcade has space for food sales, people will be allowed to bring outside food to eat with their families before a casual gaming session or at reserved tables for a birthday party,

ic information about the proposed merger in the near future, and each organization plans to have informational meetings to answer questions in March. All three cooperatives remain committed to keeping members, clients and stockholders informed of the process leading up to, and following a stockholder vote.

The proposal must be approved by each organization’s voting stockholders. For this purpose, each organization has called a special meeting of stockholders to be held in early April.

The machines take one or two tokens each, with most dispensing tickets that players can exchange for prizes. Players can buy four tokens cost four for $1 or 125 for $25.

“We are going to be kind of bringing in new things as the time goes, but everything has to be step by step,” Tavera said.

If the stockholders of the three cooperatives vote in favor of the merger, the planned effective date is July 1.

Rod Hebrink, president and CEO for AgStar Financial Services since 2014, will lead the proposed merged organization. Before that, Hebrink served as AgStar’s Chief Financial Officer for nearly 30 years, providing broad organization leadership to numerous functions during his tenure.

The headquarters of the proposed organization will be in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. While geographically fairly central for the new organization, the proposed merged organization is committed to a decentralized operating structure. No local offices will close as a result of the merger.

The Board of Directors for the proposed merged organization will be comprised of 14 member-elected directors and three outside appointed directors. If stockholders vote in favor of the merger, the new board will have equitable representation of board members in approximate proportion to the number of stockholders from each of the three areas.

As spring approaches, for many (especially in the Midwest) that means the start of the planting season. People work hard at preparing the groundwork for planting seeds to have a bountiful return once the seeds have had a chance to grow in the proper climate.

Saturday at Faranda’s, Proudly DeKalb sponsored a DeKalb Leadership Symposium with the same idea in mind – planting a seed for leadership development. The symposium brought together a diverse and cross-generational representation of people in the community that have been a part of many of the leadership programs in the area. Attendees included students representing the Kishwaukee Education Consortium Business Leadership Academy, Community Foundation’s Youth Engaged in Philanthropy, Kishwaukee College leadership programs, Northern Illinois University Leadership Programs, and the DeKalb Chamber Leadership Academy along with representatives of the faith-based community, city of DeKalb, DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, Kishwaukee College and NIU leaders, and more.

D-427’s millions more dollars aren’t enough Sycamore School District 427 is in the midst of a three-year budget reduction plan, which calls for the district to eliminate 40 jobs next school year, including several teaching positions through layoffs and attrition.

It’s become an annual occurrence this time of year. In recent years, district officials have eliminated coaching positions, left administrative positions to go dark, and yes, cut the positions of teachers and support staff. The district has run a deficit for each of the past five school years.

You might think that with all this deficit spending, the district is receiving less money for education – but that’s not so. In fact, the district’s budgets, which are available online, show the amount the district receives for education has increased almost 18 percent since 2012-13 – from $37 million to a budgeted $43.6 million this school year. (Although the budget for this school year did project a funding decrease of about $800,000 from the previous year.)

Even in years when the district’s budget called for millions of new dollars for education, the bottom line still showed a deficit. For example, the budget for 2014-15 called for a $3.6 million increase in funding and still projected at $2.9 million deficit.

What’s behind this? As district officials have reminded the public, salaries make up more than 80 percent of the district’s education spending.

What if, instead of being obligated to give all teachers a certain percentage raise each year according to union contract, school district officials could say, “This year, we expect to receive $2.4 million in new funding. We’re going to divide 80 percent of it up among our teachers according to their performance and seniority.”

If school officials in Sycamore and around Illinois were allowed to budget within taxpayers’ means, school librarians and special education aides wouldn’t have to lose their jobs. The youngest teachers wouldn’t have to worry every spring about being laid off while senior people receive raises of 6 percent in order to boost their pensions before they retire.

This layoff trend, if it continues, will discourage young people from becoming teachers.

Union pay scales have made it impossible for school districts to manage their budgets year-to-year in a sensible way. Instead, we have a school district that receives more and more money for education each year and still has to cut staff.

The district’s most recent salary report shows that after the district superintendent and one building principal, the nexthighest-paid employees are four teachers, each of whom is paid more than $100,000 in salary, plus more than $20,000 in additional benefits. They earn more than the other building principals, assistant principals or other administrators.

In the past five school years, the budgeted cost simply for instructional salaries and benefits in the district has grown almost 16 percent, from $20.1 million to $23.3 million a year. As the district was eliminating jobs to balance the books, others were getting raises.

DeKalb County homeowners pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, and most of the taxes they pay go to local schools. Sycamore property taxpayers contribute more than $22 million to the district. The state also has increased the amount it is providing. Yet year after year, we hear that it is not enough.

So long as we continue with the system we have, it will never be enough.

Trump’s trade blindness too easy to see President Donald Trump’s international economic team is still a work in progress, although based on two early top nominations – Robert Lighthizer as U.S. trade representative and Peter Navarro to head a new National Trade Council – he fully intends to keep the protectionist promises of the campaign trail.

Certainly, a newly released administration document, “The President’s 2017 Trade Policy Agenda,” reflects the influence of Lighthizer and Navarro. The six-page statement rehashes once again their critique of U.S. trade policy since the Cold War’s end: Multilateral trade agreements and institutions such as the North American Free Trade Agreement and World Trade Organization have sacrificed American sovereignty, to the ultimate cost of U.S. jobs, especially manufacturing jobs.

Familiar and, indeed, shared by many of Trump’s Democratic opponents it may be, this narrative is far from an accurate diagnosis.

It is true, as the new Trump agenda notes, that manufacturing employment declined, in absolute numbers, between 2000 (the last year before the United States approved China’s entry to the WTO) and 2016, from 17.2 million to 12.3 million. Whether this decline is 100 percent the fault of the WTO, NAFTA or any other multilateral trade deal, as opposed to automation and other long-term factors not unique to the United States, is another question.

As a new analysis by economic historian Bradford DeLong of the University of California at Berkeley shows, the past two decades of job losses in manufacturing are part of a trend that began after the Korean War. Factory work went from 32 percent of nonfarm employment in 1953 to 16 percent in 1990: long before NAFTA or China. For comparison’s sake, DeLong notes that Germany – held out by many U.S. trade critics as

a paragon of manufacturing employment preservation – shed half of its factory jobs between 1970 and 2015.

Obviously, these numbers don’t salve the pain, material and psychic, of those who lost out from these sweeping historical processes. They do, however, suggest there’s little to be gained by trying to renegotiate existing trade institutions, or to opt out of them selectively, when, say, a WTO ruling does not comport with U.S. interests – as the new Trump agenda suggests.

To the contrary, DeLong calculates that China’s accession to the WTO and NAFTA combined cost the U.S. 500,000 net manufacturing jobs, in a workforce of more than 150 million people.

Again, we don’t dispute the impact – especially on the light industries such as shoes or furniture hardest hit by imports. Nor do we quarrel with the Trump agenda’s assertion that trade with China has largely failed to induce greater abiding of the law and transparency by that one-party state.

Yet the best way to counteract China’s mercantilism would seem to be by precisely the sort of U.S.-led multilateral cooperation that the Trump administration has rejected, in the form of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The Trump agenda blames past policymakers for “turn[ing] a blind eye to unfair trade practices” in the pursuit of “putative geopolitical advantage.”

Geopolitics, however, is just another word for shaping the world to serve all U.S. interests, with a minimum of conflict. And the real blindness consists in unilaterally asserting “sovereignty” and “protection” without regard to the legitimate interests of other nations, or their capacity for retaliation.

It ended the procedure of sending unaccompanied asylum-claiming teens (or purported teens) to distant towns with summonses – seldom obeyed – to appear for hearings later.

These changes are bound to have the practical effect of deterring illegal border crossings and altering the plans of people currently in the United States illegally.

Even those who have never had a brush with law enforcement may calculate that relatively innocent behavior could trigger a sudden deportation.

The result is likely to be attrition of the undocumented population, or what Mitt Romney infelicitously called self-deportation. That’s what apparently has happened in Arizona since the state began requiring E-Verify checks on job applicants in 2008.

The Trump order specifically excluded “dreamers” – people brought here illegally as children – from threat of deportation, effectively continuing former President Barack Obama’s 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals exception. That’s widely popular; Americans don’t like punishing children for the sins of their parents.

Trump has long said he’s not ea-

ger to deport dreamers, and perhaps he’ll offer them legal status or even, as the lunch leaks suggested, citizenship in any immigration legislation.

If so, it’ll be a bargaining chip for “comprehensive”-supporting Democrats who’ve sought legal status for almost all immigrants. In return, Trump would seek what he called for when he got around to talking about possible legislation in his speech: “switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration and instead adopting a merit-based system.”

This was the 10th point in Trump’s 10-point plan in his Aug. 31 speech in Phoenix, delivered just after he met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico City.

It’s the major feature of legislation recently introduced by Republican Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue.

It’s based, as Trump noted, on the point systems of the immigration laws of Canada and Australia. In those countries, immigrants have incomes and education levels that are above average, not below average as they are here.

It’s politically popular there and might be here. In Britain, Brexit strategist Dominic Cummings, noting that focus group participants without prompting praised “the Australian points system,” made that a major part of the successful Vote Leave message. Like Brits, Americans who don’t want more lowskilled immigrants may also believe that their nation could always use more Einsteins.

Last summer and fall, the committee schemed to brand this tax to the public as a replacement of a temporary tax that expired to try to pull a fast one over the public. However, the county’s lawyers advised that they could not do this, so the tax must be put forth for what it is, a new permanent property tax.

In discussions, the health committee can be heard mocking the taxpayers when they discussed ways of “convincing” the public to buy into the increase with phrases like “trust us.”

Board members can be heard laughing out loud after one board member could be heard saying at the June 6 meeting that the county should send out postcards to senior citizens that say “vote for this or die!” Really? This is no laughing matter.

The committee also schemed and delayed putting this on the ballot from November 2016 to April 2017 because fewer people would vote on it. On June 6 County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski can be heard stating that there will be fewer voters to reach out to.

Net migration to the U.S. from Mexico, which the Pew Research Center said has produced the lowest-skilled immigrants on average, fell to zero between 2007 and 2014 and has not bounced back to anywhere close to previous levels.

Meanwhile, immigration from Asia has been increasing. China and India together have accounted for more immigrants than Mexico since at least 2012.

Asian immigrants are not all high-skilled. But their education and skill levels are, on average, significantly higher than those from south of the border.

So America is already moving toward an inflow of high-skilled immigrants, and Trump enforcement policies may be discouraging lowskilled people to immigrate or stay here illegally.

Requiring E-Verify for job applicants and establishing a visa-tracking system – which might require legislation but might be partly accomplished by regulation – would move us further toward a higher-skilled and legally sanctioned immigrant population.

That’d be a positive result, whatever you think of Trump’s “great, great wall.”

To the Editor: Watch out! Another potential permanent property tax increase will be on the ballot for DeKalb County on April 4 for county voters to chime in on.

If approved, the tax would permanently add on .02871 percent to your property tax, every year, for a total tax to the county of $22 million.

The new permanent tax is earmarked to fund optional health services. This tax was promoted by the county’s Health and Human Services Commit-

Grants were obtained and used to pay for these optional services in the past, however, the county health department has been lax in obtaining new grants for funding for these health services, so they are turning to the taxpayer. Again, it is important to note that the services the proposition will fund are not mandated services.

The tax increase will be the last item on the ballot. I urge you to vote NO on the permanent health tax April 4.

The afternoon before President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress, Twitter watchers were treated to a flurry of tweets, inspired by comments at the traditional lunch with network anchors, that the president was going to endorse something very much like the “comprehensive” immigration bills that foundered in Congress in 2006, ’07 and ’13.

That was wishful thinking by people discounting Trump’s constant promises and stuck in the decade-ago mindset that spawned the “comprehensive” legislation, which in Trump’s view would have legalized the presence of undocumented immigrants immediately in return for promises, never to be fulfilled, of tough border and workplace enforcement later.

In the House chamber, Trump made that clear as he spoke briefly but tellingly on immigration. He began not by calling for new legislation – the usual subject matter of such presidential addresses – but by describing what he is doing and what is happening now. His unstated subtext: Facts on the ground have made the “comprehensive” model irrelevant.

Those facts are being affected by the orders he has issued since taking office, orders requiring stricter enforcement of current laws that previous administrations didn’t choose to enforce.

The Trump Department of Homeland Security widened considerably the number of criminal offenses for which undocumented immigrants can be deported. It abolished the

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team only has one player with experience playing at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Good thing for the Huskies, that player is senior guard Ally Lehman.

As she’s done all season, Lehman likely will do a little bit of everything Wednesday for the No. 4 seed Huskies when they take on No. 5 seed Ohio in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament in Cleveland.

“I don’t know if we’ll lean on her more than usual,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said of Lehman. “You have one of the best players in the league; obviously, you have to play like the best player in the league in conference tournament time. I don’t know if it will be any different than usual. I know she’ll be ready. I don’t worry about Ally not being able to handle it.”

Lehman leads the team in points (18.3), rebounds (10.0) and assists (6.6) a game and set the program record for double-doubles in the regular season with 17.

In her only other game at Quicken Loans Arena, which is home to the Cleveland Cavaliers, she had 10 points as a freshman when the Huskies lost, 61-47, to Ball State in the quarterfinals of the 2014 MAC tournament.

The last time NIU won a game in Cleveland was the second round of the 2012 tournament – a 61-60 victory over Akron on a tip-in by Kim Davis – and the last time the Huskies made the semifinals of the MAC tournament came in 2007.

Picked in the preseason to finish in fifth place in the MAC West, the Huskies burst onto the scene with their high-scoring, fast-paced offense as a major surprise in the conference. However, they lost four of their final five regular-season games – including 90-77 at Western Michigan on Saturday.

“Our approach is definitely let’s regroup to how we got to this point and then go see if the best version of ourself is good enough,” Carlsen said. “I feel like in the last couple weeks, we’ve gotten a little uptight.

We have to get out of that. That’s really not our M.O. It’s not what we’ve done all year, so our approach has been more, let’s go out and play hard and enjoy the game. For us, it’s got to be about fun, because that’s when we’ve been at our best.”

The Huskies already have a win over the Bobcats this season, knocking them off, 88-80, on Jan. 7 in DeKalb. Quiera Lampkins averages 19.9 points a game for Ohio and had 30 points and five rebounds Monday in its 63-49 win over No. 12 seed Eastern Michigan.

“The thing about Ohio is it was so long ago that we played them,” Carlsen said. “It’s a good film to watch – what did we do that worked, what didn’t work and see what they’ve done since there. It doesn’t hurt, but I don’t know how much of a factor it is, especially against a team you’ve only played once.”

Carlsen joked that there’s plenty of debate among her staff on whether that’s been because of the Huskies getting tight toward the end of the season or if it’s because opponents have them scouted better as the season has worn on.

“I think you could argue that all day, depending who you’re talking to,” Carlsen said. “My staff and I have that debate all the time. We could talk for days and hours on why. Obviously, everybody is going to be super prepared for everybody else in the tournament.

You’re not going to surprise anybody, especially at this point. I also think that’s why it’s more important to not try to re-create the wheel. You’re going to have to be the best version of you, or it’s not going to work.”

Fourth-quarter woes resurface

mpotash@suntimes.com AUBURN HILLS, Mich – It’s not like the Bulls can’t figure out what happens to them late in games like this.

“They made some shots. We missed some.

And that’s how the game goes,” Bulls guard Jimmy Butler said after the Bulls faltered in the fourth quarter in a 109-95 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday night at the Palace.

Figuring out what to do about it seems like it will be a little more problematic for a disjointed team still finding its way after the trade of Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott. The Bulls led by 14 points in the first quarter and by three points late in the third. But after the Pistons tied the score at 79 after three quarters, the Bulls were dominated in the fourth – shooting 6 of 20 from the field and getting outscored 30-16.

It was a similar fate to their loss to the Clippers on Saturday, when the Bulls scored 61 points in the first half, but were outscored 4630 in the second half of a 101-91 loss.

Playing without guards Dwyane Wade (thigh) and Rajon Rondo (ankle) made the Pistons’ job a little easier – put the clamps on Butler and watch the Bulls’ offense implode.

Butler led the Bulls with 27 points on 7-of-16 shooting, with nine rebounds and four assists.

But he was shut down by the Pistons early in the fourth quarter as they opened an 89-82 lead and never were threatened.

Even Butler had his moments. On a fast break after a Pistons turnover with the Bulls trailing 87-82, it looked like Butler had an opportunity for a slam dunk. Instead, he fumbled the ball out of bounds. Andre Drummond scored at the other end to make it 89-82.

“They were blitzing Jimmy, doing a good job,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “It’s an opportunity when you draw two to the ball like that to make a pocket pass and then hopefully play the numbers game in the back side. We didn’t take advantage of that.”

Butler vowed to be more aggressive against the Pistons than he was against the Clippers – when he took only seven shots and scored 16 points. He was, but without Rondo and Wade, he was virtually helpless in crunch time. Bobby Portis, Robin Lopez, Paul Zipser, Jerian Grant and Cameron Payne combined for six points on 3-of-11 shooting in the fourth quarter.

“I think everybody knows who’s going to get the ball in the fourth quarter, given that D-Wade is out, Rondo is out,” Butler said.

“They did a good job of making me give the ball up, double-teaming me.

“Obviously that was their scouting report.

I could hear them yelling it from the other end of the floor. I take the shots we got. I want the young guys being aggressive, shooting when your open. attacking the rim when you can.

It’s only going to make us better in this long run that’s so short with the 19 or so games we have left. We’ll be OK.”

Rookie Valentine warming up to bigger role

mpotash@suntimes.com AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Denzel Valentine was proudly wearing his “Lansing” sweatshirt when he arrived at Detroit’s Country Day School for the Bulls’ shootout Monday.

“I saw somebody on Instagram, they had it on,” the Bulls rookie guard said. “And I DM’ed him and said, ‘I need one.’ And they sent me one. Me and my brother got one.”

Valentine wears that shirt everywhere he goes, but it had special meaning Monday upon his return to Michigan – he starred at Sexton High School and at Michigan State in Lansing.

This “homecoming” was a little better than Valentine’s first one as a pro. He did not play in the Bulls’ 10291 loss to the Pistons on Dec. 6 at the

Palace. This time he is at least on the fringe of the rotation.

“I’m excited,” Valentine said. “But at the same time, I can’t put too much into it. I’m just looking at it as another game to get better.”

Valentine admitted it was difficult to sit on the bench when the Bulls lost to the Pistons in December.

“You’ve got a lot of Denzel fans, a lot of people sup- Valentine porting you and you don’t get to play – it kind of bums you out a little bit,” Valentine said. “But at the same time, I’m doing the job I dreamed about doing. So I’m just glad I’m getting another chance to get better, and what do you know – I’m back in the rotation.”

“He’s taken advantage of the trade and inserting him in the starting lineup … playing with great energy,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “I loved

“He gets out and runs. He’s one of our better screeners. He’s going to rebound and battle, and that’s what we’re looking for out of Bobby every night.”

Blast from the past: Former Bulls center Luc Longley caught up with former teammate Bill Wennington before Monday night’s game. Wennington and Longley were teammates on the Bulls’ second three-peat in 1995-96 through 1997-98.

The duo, in fact, combined for 25 points in the historic 108-86 dismantling of the Sonics in Game 3 of the NBA Finals in 1996.

he fog machines were rolling. Players were introduced individually. Teams lined up for the national anthem. At a rink in Bensenville at the end of the 2002-03 youth hockey season, Ryan Hartman and the Crystal Lake Leafs squared off against Vinnie Hinostroza and the Chicago Blues.

Before they ever wore the same Blackhawks red, black and white, the duo battled for a title.

“I won like eight state championships,” Hinostroza said. “I think that’s one of the only ones I lost.”

Most memories of the game have been lost. The Leafs won, culminating Hartman’s lone season with the Crystal Lake-based program, which has since moved to West Dundee. Hartman joined the Chicago Mission, one of the top clubs in the state, the next season. He teamed up with Hinostroza while at the Mission, and the pair won several more state championships along the way.

For Hartman, the thing that stands out about that first state championship game is the extravagant entrance the players were given.

“That was pretty cool,” he said. “That’s the only real memory I have of that.”

Well, except for one other thing.

“We beat Vinnie,” Hartman said.

Northern Illinois senior center Marin Maric stared at the hoop in disbelief with his hands on his hips.

The big man missed a pair of free throws that would have tied it in the closing seconds Monday, and the No. 9-seeded Huskies fell, 72-69, at No. 8 seed Eastern Michigan in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Maric went to the line with seven seconds remaining and the Huskies trailing, 71-69, after Eastern Michigan senior Ty Toney missed four consecutive free throws to give NIU (15-17 overall) a chance to tie it.

Eastern Michigan sophomore James Thompson IV split a pair of free throws to give the Eagles (16-16) a three-point lead with six seconds remaining, but the Huskies couldn’t get a shot up before the buzzer.

Maric finished with 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds for his sixth consecutive double-double. Sophomore forward Levi Bradley had 17 points, freshman guard Eugene German added 10 points, and senior guard Dontel Highsmith was scoreless in 30 minutes but finished with six assists.

Thompson had a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

The Huskies led for most of the first half – including 21-13 after a layup by Bradley with 9:25 remaining – but allowed the Eagles to sneak into halftime with a big swing of momentum. With NIU leading, 29-28, Thompson gave the Eagles the lead on a layup with five seconds left, and the Huskies lost the ball on the inbounds pass and Willie Magnum IV nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Eastern Michigan a 33-29 advantage.

The Huskies never took the lead the rest of the way.

NASCAR needs rivalries to spice up action CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rivalries are the lifeblood of sports, and NASCAR sorely needs a few to spice up the action.

The discourse among drivers has been tame for several years, in part because wives and children have seemed to mellow the competitors. They live inches away from each other in the same motorhome lot every weekend, share the playground, the basketball court and the gym.

It’s kind of hard to slide a side eye at someone you share a neighborhood with 38 weekends a year.

So there was much delight Sunday night when DeLana Harvick, wife of known agitator Kevin Harvick, took a swipe on social media at Austin Dillon.

Mrs. Harvick was upset that Dillon seemed to lose power in the waning laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where his decision to stay on the track caused a race-altering caution.

Because Dillon didn’t pull off, NASCAR brought out the yellow flag and the field headed to pit road for a final stop. Harvick, who had the win in control before Dillon’s action, was flagged for speeding on pit road and the penalty cost him a victory.

Harvick had led 292 of the 325 laps –

IN THE PITS Jenna Fryer the most ever for a driver at Atlanta who did not win the race – and he finished ninth.

His wife used an expletive on Twitter to express her displeasure with Dillon, and many fans rejoiced because it was the most exciting thing to come out of the second race of the season.

Harvick didn’t point the finger at Dillon. After all, it’s hard to cast blame on someone when you were the one caught speeding. But that entire sequence and the volley from DeLana Harvick were the best parts of an otherwise uninspiring race.

Perhaps something else would have changed the course of the event in the final minutes, but without that caution, Harvick drives to an easy win. Instead, Brad Keselowski proved his team can overcome adversity by coming back from a pit road error to take the checkered flag.

Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott again showed they will contend for victories many times this season. Atlanta officials conceded that overwhelming

driver pressure has them reconsidering a planned repave to the track, and Ford with its beefed up lineup has gone 2-for-2 to start the Cup season.

Those are your highlights, folks.

NASCAR no longer wants to see fisticuffs from its drivers, who also have sponsors that prefer they be family-friendly brand ambassadors.

But everything is built around excitement, and NASCAR needs more of it, immediately.

Larson loses

Chip Ganassi has taken the “I like winners” slogan to new heights with his social media use of the tag when talking anything from politics to team performance. The owner must be getting a little anxious about star driver Kyle Larson.

Larson finished second to Keselowski on Sunday after choosing to run the slower high line at Atlanta while leading the race in the final moments.

Keselowski got by Larson on the bottom, and Larson has now been passed for the lead late in a race in the last three Cup races dating to the November season finale.

The season-opener at Daytona wasn’t his fault because Larson ran out

of gas. But Larson could be accused of either overthinking or being too nice.

Either way, he’s got just one win in his Cup career and that’s not enough for the victory-charged Ganassi.

Built Ford tough

Ford wasn’t kidding when it said it wanted improved performance from its Cup program. The manufacturer signed Stewart-Haas Racing for this season and parlayed it into a Daytona 500 victory with Kurt Busch.

The race Sunday at Atlanta was going to SHR driver Kevin Harvick until his late speeding penalty, so the win went instead to Ford driver Brad Keselowski of Team Penske. Ford, which won a total of eight Cup races last season, has two wins in two races this year.

“They said they were going to bring on Stewart-Haas, and we said ‘That’s great,’ because we really get some teammates, we’ve got benchmark,” team owner Roger Penske said. “For Ford, it’s terrific that we kick off the season certainly with Kurt’s win last week and the win this week for us.”

According to Maddon, controlling the opposing team’s running game will be a key factor, especially given Lester’s well-known problems throwing to first on attempted pickoffs. Ross and Lester were able to halt the running game effectively by having Lester step off the mound and by having Ross work with first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

“The big thing there is the ability from Willson to be able to handle the

running game,” Maddon said early in spring training. “We’re going to have David mentor him a little bit regarding the thought, the process, the conversations he’s had with Jonny in the past and continue to move it forward from there. We feel really good about it. I think it’s a real naturally good matchup with Willson and Jon.” Contreras is a right-handed batter, and both Montero and Schwarber hit left-handed. Montero had a line of .216/.327/.357 with eight homers and 33 RBIs last year, but he added some big hits in the postseason and could provide an attractive option for Maddon when the opponent throws a tough right-hander at the Cubs.

Schwarber sits in on the daily catchers meetings in spring training but does physical work behind the plate once or twice a week. Given his powerful bat, the Cubs will take no unnecessary chances with Schwarber’s knee.

Cubs 13, L.A. Angels 10: Jason Heyward ended a hitless spring with a home run, double and three RBIs. The Cubs had 14 hits and five players had multi-hit games. Jake Arrieta struggled through two innings, allowing three runs.

It would be difficult to imagine a more auspicious big league debut than the one Willson Contreras experienced in June.

In his first major league at-bat, Contreras hit the first pitch he saw out of the park for a two-run homer against the Pirates.

Easy game, huh?

No, it never is that easy. But Contreras is learning his craft, and, by all accounts, he has been a quick study.

That will be important for the Cubs this year because the entire dynamic behind the plate has changed. Respected veteran David Ross retired after the World Series, leaving the catching duties to second-year man Contreras, veteran Miguel Montero and that kid named Kyle Schwarber.

Given good health, Contreras will get the bulk of the catching duties.

Montero will be the primary backup, and Schwarber will ease his way into third-catcher duties as he comes back from major knee surgery performed last April after a collision that happened while he was playing left field.

So far, everybody seems to be on board with the program. Contreras is happy to be the No. 1 catcher. Montero, who expressed dissatisfaction with how he was used in the postseason, ironed things out with manager Joe Maddon during a pasta-and-vino summit. And Schwarber seems happy to be playing anywhere.

Contreras certainly puts a charge into the Cubs’ battery. In 55 games last season, he compiled a hitting line of .282/.357/.488 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs. Even in limited time, he had a wins above replacement (WAR) of 2.2, according to FanGraphs. That was good for seventh among National League catchers.

He’s a ball of energy behind the plate, which can be both a good and a bad thing. The Cubs have a veteran pitching staff, and those pitchers like a steady hand catching them.

On top of that, Contreras will be the primary catcher for ace lefty Jon Lester, who threw to Ross the past two seasons.

Lester made his spring debut Sunday, working with Contreras.

“We’ll figure it out,” Lester told reporters. “It’s just a matter of throwing innings and pitches and all that stuff.

Never too late to start exercising Dear Doctor: I’m 63 years old, and even though my kids think I’m too old, I want to start running. Can you help me to prove them wrong?

Dear Reader: At the risk of wading into the middle of a family argument, we believe that it’s never too late to become physically active.

And if you’re careful about how you begin – and maintain – your new exercise regimen, there’s no reason why running can’t be at least one part of the program.

To get your kids on board, let’s start with all the good things that come from regular exercise.

And when we say exercise, we’re referring specifically to activities like walking briskly, jogging, running, swimming laps, dancing, raking leaves (you get the idea) that will increase your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time.

Regular exercise can help you to control your weight, reduce your risk of serious health problems like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers, and even improve your sleep and your mood.

It also strengthens muscles and bones, which not only makes it easier to perform everyday tasks and activities, but also can help with balance and thus reduce the chance of a fall. If you’re an older adult, regular exercise increases your chances of living longer.

To succeed at your new running program, you’ll need to be smart about the way you get started. We believe it’s always wise to enlist your primary care physician as your partner when making this kind of lifestyle change. She or he knows your health history and will be able to flag any potential risks or problems.

As for running itself, there are several

They’ll not only cushion your step, they will also help with alignment and guard against knee, hip and ankle pain.

Good socks and comfortable exercise clothes are also important.

Although your goal is running, you’re best off beginning with a long, brisk walk. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your heart rate goes up. Plan a route – 20 minutes is reasonable to start – and see how it feels.

As the days and weeks go by, you can increase both pace and distance. When you’re ready, start mixing a few minutes of running into your brisk walk.

Easing into a run-walk routine will help you build strength and allow your body to adjust to the physical impact. As with any physical activity, include a slow warm-up and a deliberate cool-down.

Some of our patients find that having a goal to train for, like a 5K charity run, helps them to stick to their routine. Others prefer the camaraderie of exercising with a class or a friend. The main thing is balance.

Don’t try to do too much too quickly.

And whatever you choose, have fun.

At the bridge table, occasionally one can improve slam bidding by showing a single card. In today’s deal, what should North rebid after he opens one diamond and South responds one spade?

Despite the weak trumps, the North hand is worth game now. (Yes, in support-point terms the hand contains just 17: 15 high-card points and 2 shortage points for the singleton; but the hand has only five losers: three spades, one heart and one club.

That makes it worth game.)

However, rather than raise directly to four spades, North should jump to four clubs, which is a splinter bid showing game values in spades with four trumps and a singleton (or void) in clubs. (A singleton is seven times more likely than a void.) Now South knows that he has no club losers, because if necessary he can ruff his two low cards in the dummy. He should then use some form of Blackwood to learn that one key card is missing and sign off in six spades.

How should declarer play after West leads the heart nine? (With dummy known to be so short in clubs, leading that suit loses some of its luster.)

South can afford one trump loser, but not two. This is a textbook suit combination. The correct play is first to cash the spade ace. If an honor drops, it’s all over. But if only low cards appear, declarer crosses to the board with a heart (or a diamond) and leads a spade toward his queen.

This avoids any guesswork.
