It’s that age-old debate; what’s better, the book Aimee Barrows – news@daily-chronicle.com or the movie?” The most popular nonfiction Catherine Delaforet (left) of Sycamore looks over books at the Sycamore Public Library with her granddaughter, Glorie O’Connell, 13, of title in 2014 at the Sycamore library is Laura Hillenbrand’s Rockford.

She said patrons always want to read new novels by authors who’ve written previous best-sellers, such as Clive Cussler, James Patterson or John Grisham. Jen Barton, director of the Genoa Public Library, said in an email that a trend she’s noticed this past year is the interest among adults, mostly women, in reading young adult and teen titles, especially those that

ROCKFORD AIRPORT MARKS 10 YEARS AS INTERNATIONAL PORT

By TRISNADI MARJAN and MARGIE MASON The Associated Press SURABAYA, Indonesia – More planes will be in the air and more ships on the sea today hunting for AirAsia Flight 8501 in a widening search off Indonesia that has dragged into a third day without any solid leads. At least 30 ships, 15 aircraft and seven helicopters were looking for the jet carrying 162 people, said Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo. Most of the craft were Indonesian but Singapore, Malaysia and Australia contributed to the effort. Aircraft from Thailand planned to join today’s search. He said the search area would be expanded to land areas, with four military helicopters dispatched just after sunrise near Pangkalan Bun on the western part of Borneo island and to smaller islands of Bangka and Belitung. “Until now, we have not yet found any signal or indication of the plane’s whereabouts,” Soelistyo told The Associated Press, adding fishermen from Belitung island were also helping. The U.S. Navy also is joining the search. It said in a statement that the USS Sampson, a destroyer, which was already on an independent deployment in the Western Pacific, and will arrive in the area later today. China announced that a navy frigate already on patrol in the South China Sea and aircraft to help the search. Australia said today it was sending two more Orion aircraft to join the search, bringing Australia’s total contribution to three Orions. Australia is leading the ongoing search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 which disappeared in March, triggering many false reports and rumors, and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop cautioned on speculation surrounding the AirAsia flight. “There will be many reports over the next little while as the search and rescue operation gets under way and continues, but until such time as we have actual verification, I’m not going to speculate on these issues,” she said. The AirAsia pilots had been worried about the weather and had sought permission to climb above threatening clouds. Air traffic control couldn’t say yes immediately – there was no room. Six other airliners were crowding the airspace, forcing Flight 8501 to remain at a lower altitude. Minutes later, the jet was gone from the radar without issuing a distress signal. The

Ready for takeoff By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com ROCKFORD – The decade since the federal government designated Chicago Rockford International Airport as an official U.S. port of entry has been a good one for the facility, its director said. That 2004 designation helped the airport find its growing niche for leisure travel, which now sees more than 250,000 people a year taking flights to warm places. It also expanded the airport’s status as a major hub for cargo flights, evidenced in part by the 600,000-square-foot UPS operation on its grounds. What has it meant for the area, and what could it mean in the future for DeKalb County? The answer, Executive Director Mike Dunn said, is convenience, commerce and jobs, especially with more than $90 million in

Steven Johnson, director of DeKalb-based Carder Travel Ltd., said about 10 percent of its customers fly out of Chicago Rockford International Airport. “The Rockford airport is an important addition to the travel market in DeKalb,” he said. “Leisure travelers appreciate the option of flying out of the Rockford airport if the flight schedules meet their travel requirements.” Travelers choose the Rockford airport because of the free and convenient parking and relatively small walking distance compared to Chicago airports, Johnson said.
