Union, college board set to negotiate Both parties to meet Monday in attempt to avert strike at Kishwaukee College By ADAM POULISSE apoulisse@shawmedia.com MALTA – The Kishwaukee College faculty union and college administration agreed Friday afternoon to move negotiations up to Monday morning in hopes of averting a strike planned for Wednesday. If a deal is not reached, faculty members have already voted to walk off campus Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., between classes, and return later to picket just off school grounds. Monday’s meeting will be overseen by a federal mediator,

as both sides continue to work toward an agreement on faculty wages and benefits. Negotiations originally were planned for Wednesday evening. “We are approaching this session with cautious optimism,” union president and Kishwaukee College math teacher Matt Read said in a statement. “We hope that an agreement can be made that will completely avert a strike.” A strike would cause classes at the college to be canceled indefinitely, something some students said they did not see as reason to celebrate.
A faculty walkout would affect nearly 3,500 full- and parttime students at the college, causing questions about their financial aid situation and the school calendar. A prolonged strike could have an effect on financial aid refunds, and class makeups could cancel Spring Break, according to the college’s website. “It shouldn’t happen,” sophomore Charnise Allen said. “The school year’s started. I believe this is something that shouldn’t be interrupting class.” All 81 full-time faculty are
represented by the union. A strike would also halt classes taught by the school’s 161 adjunct faculty. “They need to remember why they became teachers in the first place,” Allen said. “It was not for a lot of money.” During the strike, all campus services, such as the financial aid office and bookstore will remain available, according to the college’s website. Athletic teams also will continue to compete, including the college’s men’s basketball

Feeling telepressure? NIU researchers study need to respond to electronic messages from work
Balancing privacy, security continues to be a struggle The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama argued Friday that a resurgent fear of terrorism across Europe and the United States should not lead countries to overreact and shed privacy protections, even as British Prime Minister David Cameron pressed for more government access to encrypted communications used by U.S. companies. Obama and Cameron met at the White House just over a week after terror attacks in France left 17 people dead and stirred anxieties on both sides of the Atlantic. In the wake of the attacks, Cameron has redoubled efforts to get more access to online information, while the French government plans to present new anti-terrorism measures next week that would allow for more phone-tapping and other surveillance. “As technology develops, as the world moves on, we should try to avoid the safe havens that could otherwise be created for terrorists to talk to each other,” Cameron said in a joint news conference with Obama. The response to the Paris attacks could reinvigorate the debate over balancing privacy and security, even as governments and companies still grapple with the

A new tech term, “workplace telepressure,” was created by Northern Illinois University psychology researchers Larissa Barber and Alecia Santuzzi for a new study on workplace telepressure and its implications, published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. Barber and Santuzzi define the term as an urge to quickly respond to emails, texts and voice mails – regardless of whatever else is happening or whether one is even “at work.” This preoccupation with work-related digital communications could lead to burnout and sleep issues. at Northern Illinois University, said he checks his phone every five to 10 minutes for personal and work messages.
