Afton man receives Governor’s Volunteer Award last week By JAKE WADDINGHAM

CNA associate editor jwaddingham@crestonnews.com

AFTON — Don Sheridan received a 2014 Governor’s Volunteer Award from Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds during a special recognition ceremony held June 18 in Pleasant Hill. Sheridan was honored with a Length of Service Volunteer Award by South Central Iowa Community Foundation (SCICF) for the service, dedication and leadership he provides to SCICF. Through SCICF, he is also a board member for Endow Union County. “It’s always a great pleasure for me to honor and recognize the volunteers who accomplish extraordinary things through service to help their communities, fellow citizens, and the great state of Iowa,” said Gov. Tery Branstad. “These dedicated volunteers lead by example—not only encouraging the people they help, but motivating others to serve as well. I sincerely thank them all for their dedication and efforts.” Sheridan said he enjoys local volunteer projects that help build a sense of community.

“I get a kick out of it (volunteering),” Sheridan said. “But I want to volunteer for something that you get to see the fruits of your labor. You get to actually watch whatever you are doing grow and develop into something for your community.” The Governor’s Volun-

teer Awards (GVA) program was created in 1982, with inaugural awards presented in 1983. What began as a small program for state government agencies, has expanded over the years and now provides all Iowa nonprofit, charitable, and government organizations with an easy way to honor

their volunteers with a prestigious state-level award. Hundreds of volunteers are recognized each year with awards in one of four categories: Individual, Group, Length of Service or Disaster Volunteer. “The Governor and I are strong believers that our community volunteers, charitable nonprofits, and faith-based institutions are often best equipped to provide long-term solutions to the challenges we face,” said Lt. Governor Reynolds. “Some of our most promising and cost-effective solutions to literacy, disaster response, drop-out prevention, and community development are fueled by tapping into our best assets—our people and our volunteer spirit.” Sheridan said he is proud of the effort that is being put in at McKinely Lake to make it an attractive recreational area. He also said he is impressed with the work that has been put into the endowment fund at Mayflower Heritage School. “Partnering is the key to a successful community foundation,” Sheridan said. “By working together they can accomplish things a smaller group could never handle on their own.”

Iraq conflict causes rising gas prices (MCT) — While some predicted gas prices to drop in June, violence in Iraq triggered increases around Iowa and the United States as we head into summer travel season, according to some industry observers. Average prices of $3.56 per gallon for regular unleaded gas in Iowa and $3.68 per gallon nationally on Wednesday were as high as they’ve been all year and mark the highest prices to

start summer in six years, according to AAA and the Energy Information Administration. “That is what has caused the increased prices at the pump,” Gail Weinholzer, director of public affairs for AAA Minnesota/Iowa, said of turmoil in Iraq. “Although, most of the increases have been relatively minimal.” At the beginning of June, AAA said gas prices had

decreased by an average of 21 cents per gallon over the past three Junes, and speculated that a 10 cent per gallon decrease was possible if refinery production increased as expected. However, gas prices jumped on average 8- to 10cents a gallon after the fall of Mosul, Iraq on June 10, and the price of crude oil jumped about $5 from $102 per barrel to $107 in that time, according to statistics

from AAA and Bloomberg. AAA said on June 23 that gas prices had climbed for 12 straight days, although they’ve held steady since then. Crude oil was trading at $106.50 per barrel on Wednesday. While unrest in Iraq can have ripple effects on prices in the U.S., only a small portion of U.S. oil actually Please see GAS, Page 2

Operation Dry Water underway in Iowa (MCT) — State, federal and local law enforcement agencies will focus this weekend on enforcing Iowa’s boating-while-intoxicated law as part of the national Operation Dry Water campaign. “We will conduct boating-while-intoxicatedfocused enforcement with increased patrols and check points. We will be administering breath tests and working to inform the public on the hazards involved on the waters across Iowa,” said Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources. Stocker said the DNR will have all its full-time officers, as well as some seasonal employees, engaged in the effort. Partners will include personnel from sheriff’s office, police departments, agencies of neighboring states and the U.S. Coast Guard, she added. During last year’s Operation Dry Water campaign, the DNR and its partners contacted more than 426 vessels containing 1,613 boaters resulting in 90 citations or warnings. The 2013 effort was conducted on Coralville Lake, Saylorville Reservoir, Lake Rathbun, Lake Red Rock, Okoboji and the Missouri River. Last year more than 66 percent of Iowa’s boating fatalities involved alcohol, and the figure was 70 percent in 2012, according to Stocker. “We are very concerned that our rate is about double the national rate of 34 percent, and we want to educate as many boaters as we can in an effort to bring our rate down,” she said. Wind, wave action, sun and glare can magnify the intoxicating effects of alcohol, Stocker said. Please see OPERATION, Page 2
