In a push to promote county fairs and youth involvement, a new event is coming to the southwest Iowa area. The Best of the Southwest Shootout in Pottawattamie County in July will feature the grand champion animals and youth from 10 local county fairs. “I call it a World Series for all of the county fairs in the four species to run off against each other,” said Doug Birt, Adams County committee member. “It’s also an opportunity to highlight or expose

the youth and what their other activity involvements are besides 4-H, so the kids will all get recognized.” The Shootout will host the grand champion animals from county fairs in the southwest Iowa area, and the youth who shows the animals. The county fairs involved are Adair, Adams, Cass, Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Pottawattamie East and West, Taylor and Union. Page County is not involved this year because the county fair occurs at the same time as the Shootout. “It really gives the kid another honor, taking his animal a little further than county fair,” said Craig Mittag, Adams County committee member. “I think the real premise of it is promoting county fairs. ... This gives the kids another opportunity to show because they’ve worked so hard on that animal.” The event will take place July 30 at Westfair Fairgrounds in Council Bluffs. There will be a maximum of 10 animals in each division.

The divisions are champion market steer, breeding heifer, market hog, breeding gilt, market lamb, breeding ewe, market goat and breeding doe. “I think it’s important. I think the big thing is in today’s show world it is a lot of hard work and dedication to get to that level to be a champion,” Birt said. “With hard work, they’ll have that ability to go on in their careers and have that hard work ethic, and to expose it to people that are not around that every day, to see what it’s about and how it works.” Currently, committee members are asking for donations for the event, but there will also be a fundraising auction scheduled June 30. The auction, which will occur through www. stockshowplanet.com, will allow sponsors to bid on 16 banners, one for each grand champion and reserve for each division. Currently, the only elite sponsor is AgriVision. “I hope that over time, it kind of becomes a compe-

Fresh look: Pictured above is a section of a new mural by artist Tyler Downey located on the south side of the underpass near McKinley Park in Creston. Downey, a Creston native, included several recognizable elements of McKinley Park in his mural, as well as bicyclists to commemorate the RAGBRAI overnight stay in Creston in July

tition between the county fairs and the counties promote their own county,” Mittag said. “So, it’ll be like, ‘Oh, the champion steer came from Adams County,’ ... They can do that kind of thing. And, with some of the fairs having declining numbers, hopefully this is a way to increase those numbers.” In order for a 4-H member to be eligible for the Shootout, the member has to show his or her own animal and be the grand champion for that division in his or her home county. If the grand champion declines, the reserve champion is eligible. If the reserve champion declines, the county will not be represented in that division. During the show, Mittag said the 4-H members are the ones on display, rather than the animals. The judge will ask the kids about themselves, such as who their parents are and what activities they’re involved in. The judging of the animal occurs separately. SHOOTOUT | 2A

Those curious about the “financially and intrinsically rewarding” industry of construction can try their hand at operating heavy equipment for free on Wednesday and Thursday. Iowa Workforce Development (IWD), IowaWORKS and Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will host a heavy equipment sim-

ulator 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the SWCC technical center parking lot, 1501 W. Townline St., in Creston. The two-day event will also feature several local employers in construction-related fields. While the event is for any age or gender, females are especially encouraged to attend, as they make up only about 10 percent of workers in the construction industry SIM | 2A

With more than 10,000 RAGBRAI riders expected to ride into Creston in about one month, the Creston RAGBRAI Committee’s Ride Right committee reminds Crestonians what to expect on July 25.

“Safety is important and they (residents) shouldn’t be doing certain things when the riders come by,” said Ride Right Committee Co-chairperson Larry Richardson. Richardson offered several tips for residents to keep in mind that will help keep everyone safe on July 25. RAGBRAI | 6A

Audio waves: Chris Coke of Creston, owner of three C design, paints a mural onto a billboard

on the west side of the building next to ASI Audiology & Hearing Instruments in Creston. The mural was commissioned by ASI. Coke said the theme of the design he created is “ASI brings color back into people’s lives,” by allowing them to hear again. He began the project Tuesday and, with the help of his wife, Angela, plans to have it complete by early next week at the latest.
