Creston Fire attends post-active shooter training By BAILEY POOLMAN CNA staff reporter bpoolman@crestonnews.com

Not for the first time, news about gun violence and shootings are plastered across television sets and computer screens in attempts to get the word out. The most recent incident in Orlando, Florida, is another example of this. In an attempt to stay relevant, Creston Fire Department participated alongside three other organizations to learn what to do after an incident occurs in order to help those involved. This three-day class was held by Government Training Institute (GTI), an organization based out of South Carolina and focused on training law enforcement, military personnel and other first responders how to react during certain situations. The class was held at Southwestern Community College from Tuesday to today through a Homeland Security

grant. “Everything that they learn in this class can carry over to other responses, like how to build a response team, how to set up their priorities so that not only are they safe, but also the people that are helping them,” said Jo Duckworth, Union County Emergency Management Agency director. “It just helps with overall being prepared and being a professional.” “Unfortunately, active shooter incidents now can occur anywhere. We talked about this in class: we are not immune to them,” said Oscar TRAINING | 2A CNA photo by BAILEY POOLMAN

Dem senator wages filibuster, Estimated claims progress on gun control $700K project WASHINGTON (AP) — A Democratic senator who mourned the loss of 20 children in his home state waged a roughly 15-hour filibuster into early Thursday, asserting as he yielded the floor that Republican leaders had committed to hold votes on expanded gun background checks and a ban on gun sales to suspected terrorists. With a compromise on the gun issue still improbable, Sen. Chris Murphy stood on

the Senate floor for most of Wednesday and into Thursday. Speaking in the wake of the mass shooting early Sunday at a Florida nightclub, Murphy said he would remain there “until we get some signal, some sign that we can come together.” He concluded the filibuster at 2:11 a.m. EDT Thursday. Although Murphy, D-Conn., talked optimistically about his cause, it is unlikely the amendments Demo-

crats are seeking will pass the Republican-run Senate. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., dismissed the Democrats’ “campaign talka-thon” and urged lawmakers to back legislation favored by the National Rifle Association that would let the government delay firearms sales to suspected terrorists for up to 72 hours. Prosecutors would have to persuade a judge to block the transaction permanent-

ly, a bar that Democrats and gun control activists say is too high. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said nothing will change as long as “Republicans continue to take their orders” from the NRA. Murphy spent much of the time speaking about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012.

A new construction project is in the works for Southwestern Community College (SWCC), Vice President of Economic Development Tom Lesan said during a board meeting Tuesday. This project is a result of recent renovations in the 200-bay hallway of the instructional building, during which asbestos was found in the ceiling material, causing SWCC to bring in a company to abate and then clean the whole area affected: the 200bay hallway and the northeast commons. The new project, estimated not to exceed $700,000, is to get room 220 of the instructional building, a 250seat auditorium, back to usable condition, which involves replacing the heating,

ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) units. “As you remember, we had to take the ceiling out to abate the asbestos which gave us another problem because, once we took out all of that material, we couldn’t get out to service the HVAC units anymore in that area – the northeast commons and the LRC (Learning Resource Center),” Lesan said. “So, the Lesan problem just kept getting bigger.” The work will include putting in a new ceiling in room 220 and taking out the current set of nine HVAC units and replacing them with five new, more energy-efficient SWCC | 2A
