These interactive teller machines (ITMs) at PCSB Bank in Clarinda are the first of their kind in the state of Iowa. These machines allow PCSB Bank customers to bank with a live teller after hours.
With the press of a button, PCSB customers in Creston will soon be able to interact with a live teller after hours. ■

PCSB Bank is using technology to their and their customers’ advantage. Cindy Alvarez, executive vice president at PCSB Bank said, in addition to PCSB Bank’s automated teller machines (ATMs), an interactive teller machine (ITM) will be installed and operating in Creston by the end of July. Unlike an ATM — which is limited to dispensing cash, making deposits and transferring money between accounts — an ITM is a video banking experience with a live teller. “Imagine driving up to what looks like an ATM, but, instead of inserting your debit card and entering your pin, you simply press the start button
on the screen and a live person appears,” Alvarez said. Alvarez said its a technology similar to Facetime or Skype.
ATM vs. ITM “ATM ... gives customers a very limited self-service menu,” Alvarez said. “ITM ... provides a very personal experience.” Alvarez said every time a customer interacts with an ITM, they are interacting with a real person and ITMs provide a number of benefits. “Convenience,” Alvarez said. “ITMs provide customers the flexibility to bank when it’s convenient for them.” Alvarez said PCSB Bank’s ITMs operate 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. “These extended hours are in addition to our lobby hours, where custom-
ers still have the option to come inside and bank face to face,” Alvarez said. Alvarez said through the ITM, transactions are processed more quickly than a live teller, since the machine handles the cash and checks. Additionally, Alvarez said the ITM experience is more personal than an ATM and offers different ways to communicate with the teller on screen to maintain privacy, such as text-chat, scanner for written communication, personal ear buds or a handset (on lobby units only).
ITM services “Most everything done face to face in a traditional teller line can be done on an ITM,” Alvarez said. ITMs are able to handle check and cash deposits, perform check cashing, transfers, cash withdrawls, loan payment processing and produce imaged receipts. “There are still a few services that ITMs are not designed for,” Alvarez said. “However, PCSB
Bank still offers these services inside during normal lobby hours.” Services not included through PCSB Bank’s ITM include change orders or processing coin deposits. Also, ITMs are not designed to dispense specific denominations of bills and are uncapable of differentiating between new and old bills, whereas, an inperson teller can. PCSB Bank is the only bank in the states of Iowa and Nebraska to deploy the interactive teller machines and plan to have 11 units in service by the end of the year. Currently, five ITMs are in service between Clarinda and Lenox. Corning will have one upon completion of the new PCSB Bank facility this month and Creston’s ITM will be available late July at the PCSB Bank drive-up, 501 W. Taylor St.
WASHINGTON (MCT) — Facing the threat of sectarian conflict engulfing the Middle East, President Barack Obama indicated Thursday that he may order direct military action in Iraq, a step he has ruled out since the U.S. ended its long war there. A number of former administration officials and private analysts have been urging drone or airstrikes on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, an al-Qaida-inspired militant group whose fighters were sweeping toward Baghdad. In an Oval Office appearance, Obama said the militants’ gains indicate “Iraq’s going to need more Obama help” from the United States and other nations. Asked whether he would consider airstrikes, Obama said “I don’t rule out anything,” adding that in the continuing U.S. collaboration with the Iraqi government “there will be some short-term immediate things that need to be done militarily.”

Archeologists to survey proposed Flint River Trail DES MOINES (MCT) — A 2.5-mile stretch of the Flint River Trail will be surveyed for archaeological artifacts before construction begin. Des Moines County supervisors approved the $30,000 mandated expenditure at a meeting Tuesday. The trail was begun about 10 years ago as part of a Vision Iowa grant. Burlington’s 4-mile part of the trail and Des Moines County’s 16-mile portion eventually will connect, linking the city with the Big Hollow recreation center. The hope was to have the 20mile trail completed by 2016. A previous archaeological survey

held up construction and the date is no longer firm. The entire 20 miles will cost about $6.45 million, with 60 percent paid with federal and state grants. So far, the city has completed 1.5 miles and the county has completed 7 miles. Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission has spearhead-
ed the project, with Zach James, planning director, taking the lead. James could not be reached for comment. Chris Lee, county conservation director, said about 1 mile of the 2.5 miles is gravel-paved. The remainder is an existing trail that will be upgraded and widened and paved with crushed limestone chip.
Archaeologists already have been over the site for the previous trail but this survey will examine a 50-foot swath. The department wants a 20-foot buffer for the 10-foot-wide trail, Lee said. Lee said this portion of the trail will cost about $1.29 million with the county’s match being about $200,000. The National Historic Preservation Act requires an archeological survey if federal funds or federal permits are used for the project and the ground is to be disturbed, Lee said. The survey is to be completed within 45 days. If artifacts are discovered, the
trail will have to be diverted, Lee said. The western end of the 2.5 miles starts at U.S. 61 and follows Flint Creek to Irish Ridge Road. At the juncture of Irish Ridge Road and the trail is a long bridge over the Flint Creek. James said in March the tricky terrain and bridge are making this portion of the trail time-consuming and expensive. —————— ©2014 The Hawk Eye (Burlington, Iowa) Distributed by MCT Information Services
