When Jackie Saylor opened Maple Street Laundry Feb. 1, she didn’t think the business would increase like it has in a matter of weeks. Saylor, a 14-year resident of Creston, was looking into purchasing a property in town when she came upon the laundromat. “I got talking to Dino (Groumoutis), who said, ‘Well, there’s this laundromat,’” Saylor said. Saylor purchased the property about one year

“I had no idea what I was getting into. I knew nothing,” Saylor said. Despite her reserve, Saylor knew there was a need in the community. Express Laundromat is the only Saylor o t h e r laundry self-service in Creston, located near The Windrow on Highway 34. And, since the former laundromat closed about three years ago, and

there are plenty of apartments and other rentals in the uptown area, Saylor thought she could get the business up and running. “It seemed that it had possibility,” Saylor said. “I knew people downtown missed it and needed it.” While Saylor worked on the property, she had an income through apartments located above the laundromat, which helped her as the business began taking shape. The property still had the gas and water lines hooked up, so Saylor contracted local help in the form of True Value, Akin, Cody Hagle

and AJ Warner to make sure the lines worked and do any indoor construction that needed done. For a lot of her other questions, Saylor contacted the Coin Laundry Association, with members and staff who assisted her along the way. She also received help from many people in Creston, such as those at the Creston Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Development Centers. Saylor received an associate’s degree in sonography from Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des LAUNDRY | 2A

Creston Police Department will purchase a new police vehicle after the Creston City Council unanimously approved the purchase during Tuesday’s regular meeting. After receiving bids from all three local car dealerships, the council approved the purchase of a 2017 Ford Explorer for $18,225. That final price includes trade-in on two older police vehicles – a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria and 2012 Dodge Charger. Other bids included a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe for $30,850 and a 2017 Dodge Durango for $17,818. Bids were to include an all-wheel drive, full-sized, pursuit-rated sport utility vehicle. Ward 1 Councilmember Ron Higgins, also a salesman at Stalker Chevrolet in Creston, said Chevrolet does not offer a vehicle that matches up with the Ford Explorer, explaining the large price difference between the two vehicles. “I was just looking through here, what does the Explorer have that

the Dodge doesn’t have?” asked Ward 6 Councilmember Dave Koets. “I couldn’t really find anything in there. I didn’t know if I was missing anything.” Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer explained the Dodge Durango is not a pursuit-rated vehicle. “It’s a special service vehicle,” Ver Meer said. “A pursuit-rated vehicle m e e t s specifications for highs p e e d p u r s u i t s . Ver Meer A police service vehicle, which the Dodge Durango is, is more for like a K9 unit or a routine patrol, something that will not be involved in a high-speed chase.” The council approved, 6-0, a motion from At-Large Councilmember Steve Wintermute to purchase the Ford Explorer, with AtLarge Councilmember Terry Freeman abstaining from the vote because of his employment at Creston Automotive. Marathon debate as GOP pushes ahead on health bill WASHINGTON (AP) — Determined House Republicans pushed ahead Thursday with divisive legislation to undo former President Barack Obama’s health care law, holding marathon allnight voting sessions in key committees despite Democratic protest and intense opposition from doctors and consumer groups. The GOP scored a predawn triumph in the Ways and Means Committee after nearly 18 hours of debate along party lines, as the panel approved legislation to reshape the way millions of Americans pay for medical

care, including abolishing the tax penalty Obama’s statute imposes on people who don’t purchase insurance. “We voted repeatedly to end Obamacare’s crushing taxes and mandates and ensure patients have more power over their own health care,” said Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady of Texas. The panel’s top Democrat, Richard Neal of Massachusetts, protested that the GOP bill “would drastically increase costs and lower CARE | 14A
