DES MOINES (AP) — The Republican-controlled House on Thursday approved a voter identification bill, despite criticism from Democrats that the measure would suppress voter turnout among minorities, the elderly and the disabled. The bill by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate would make several changes to Iowa’s elections system, though most attention has been on a requirement that voters show approved ID at the polls. The measure is opposed by advocates for easier voting requirements such as the League of Women Voters of Iowa and elections

US adds robust 235K jobs, making Fed rate hike all but sure WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added a robust 235,000 jobs in February and raised pay at a healthy pace, making it all but certain that the Federal Reserve will raise short-term interest rates next week. Friday’s jobs report from the government made clear that the economy remains on solid footing nearly eight years after the Great Recession ended. The unemployment rate dipped to a low 4.7 percent

from 4.8 percent, the Labor Department said. More people began looking for jobs in February, a sign of confidence that raised the proportion of Americans working or seeking work to the highest level in nearly a year. WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE? I can tell you my wife likes things warmer, but I don’t like things warmer. I get hot easy. So I would go someplace colder. So that’s probably why Iowa fits both of us, because it’s too hot for me sometimes and too cold for her other times.

prohibit cities or counties from adopting or enforcing ordinances that raise the minimum hourly wage above the state level of $7.25. That would override wage increases approved in Polk, Johnson, Linn and Wapello counties. Republicans say the bill will add uniformity for employers, and argue the Iowa Constitution already prohibits local governments from individually raising wages. Democrats say the measure hurts workers, especially those who will have their pay cut.
