Trap shooting fans and members of the local community have their first opportunity to see the Southwestern Community College shooting team in action Saturday at the Spartan Fall Shoot Out. The event — located at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance shooting range north of Afton — is open to the public for no charge. The event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Head Coach Charlie Mundy said spectators should bring a lawn chair and their own eye protection and ear protection, but it is not required. “The kids shot well last night (Monday) at practice,” Mundy said, “and it looks like we are going to

An architect and construction management adviser were chosen for Southwestern Community College’s new dormitory project during a special meeting of the board of directors Monday. Board members Vicki Sickels of Mount Ayr and Carol Saxton of Leon were absent. The building will be located south of the Instructional Center. Contracts The board unanimously approved a contract with Invision of Des Moines to do the architectural work and Story Construction of Ames as construction management adviser. Several public hearings are slated for Nov. 19 in regard to the project. The hearings, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of SWCC’s administration building, are for contractors
to put bids in for the project’s earthwork and major utilities, footings and foundations and sale and issuance of dormitory revenue bonds. “We’re going to push it to Nov. 19 to give contractors a little more time to bid on the footings and the dirt work,” said Tom Lesan, S W C C vice president of economic development.
