First Day Hike: Some of the nearly 40 participants in the New Year’s Day hike at Green Valley State Park walk across a water crossing on the east side of Green Valley Lake. The event was part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes, which included guided hikes at 26 state parks in Iowa. Most of the participants in Sunday’s event at Green Valley walked a 2-mile route on the recreation trail from the dam on the south end of the lake to the park office on the north end. Refreshments were served at the park office after the hike.
Less than 3 weeks left: Obama in closing stretch of presidency HONOLULU (AP) — His last presidential vacation behind him, Barack Obama is entering the closing stretch of his presidency, an eleventh-hour push to tie up loose ends and put finishing touches on his legacy before handing the reins to President-elect Donald Trump. Obama returns to Washington midday Monday from Hawaii with just twoand-a-half weeks left. His final days will largely be consumed by a bid to protect his endangered health care law, a major farewell speech and the ongoing handover of power to Trump. In an email to supporters on Monday, Obama said
he’ll deliver a valedictory speech on Jan. 10, following a tradition set in 1796 when the first president, George Washington, spoke to the American people for the last time in office. The speech will take place at McCormick Place, a giant convention center in Obama’s hometown of Chicago. “I’m thinking about them as a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you’ve changed this country for the better these past eight Obama
years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here,” Obama said. Obama’s chief speechwriter, Cody Keenan, traveled with Obama to Hawaii and spent much of the trip working on the speech. The Chicago trip will likely be Obama’s last outside Washington as president and will include a “family reunion” for Obama’s former campaign staffers. Obama is also planning last-minute commutations and pardons, White House officials said, in line with his second-term effort to cut sentences for inmates given unduly harsh sentences for drug crimes. Though prominent offenders like Edward Snowden and Rod
Blagojevich are also asking for leniency, Obama’s final acts of clemency are expected to remain focused on drug offenders whose plight Obama tried but failed to address through criminal justice reform. After taking office eight years ago, Obama and his aides were effusive in their praise for how Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, helped his team take over the massive federal bureaucracy. Obama has vowed to pass on the favor to Trump. But the transition hasn’t been without incident. The two teams have clashed over the Trump OBAMA | 2A

It’s no secret gyms often see an influx of members at the turn of a new year. This year, Southern Prairie YMCA in Creston offers four different programs for those members who want to set a health- and fitness-related New Year’s resolution. CrossFit TYL in Creston also offers something for those wanting to improve their health. The Y is bringing back its Boot Camp beginning today. Sessions are 5:30-6:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until Jan. 30. After a successful summer Boot Camp program, Southern Prairie YMCA Sports and Healthy Living Coordinator Emi O’Neall said she wanted to do one in the winter. Everything will be inside the gym. Activities will include circuits, tabata and a tire night again. “I always think this is a good program for someone who doesn’t have the motivation to start because we’ll help you get that,” O’Neall said. “Once you get it, it’s really easy to get going. Also, we’ll give you different stages. O’Neall If you can’t do the regular workout, we’ll stage it
down for you so everyone can get a good workout.” The Y also offers Jump Start Jam from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, allowing anyone to try out the different classes offered at the Y for free. Classes will be broken up into 10- to 15-minute segments. The 4 Weeks to a Healthier You class runs every Tuesday in January from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. “We have Dr. Tom Young, Ginny Lints, the dietitian from Greater Regional, and Lauren Spranger go over health factors of chronic disease just to get you started off on the right foot for the year,” O’Neall said. “The classes include a hardcover journal and a month pass to the Y if you complete the four weeks.” The Y has also brought back its smartest loser challenge, which is free to anyone. The challenge runs until March 6, with the person losing the most pounds in the 10 weeks receiving a trophy. At CrossFit TYL, new members can attend classes for the month of January for $20.17. The gym is also bringing back its nutrition challenge, which includes a month of unlimited crossfit classes and the Whole30 nutrition challenge for $40. “They get access to our private Facebook support group, and then lots of recipes and a packet that gives them detailed instruction on RESOLUTION | 2A
