Wembanyama, Spurs look to shock SGA, Thunder in Christmas Day matchup The NBA’s most anticipated holiday tradition is back Thursday, Dec. 25, with the second game slot featuring Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs taking on the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at Paycom Center. All five Christmas Day matchups air live on ABC and ESPN. Entering the matchup, the San Antonio Spurs hold a respectable 11-5 won-lost record in the Western Conference (at press time), anchored by none other than their young French superstar, Victor Wembanyama. The seven-footer has once again been electric this season, putting up 26.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. Against opposing teams, the former rookie of the year continues to draw heavy defensive attention and continues to impose his presence on defense, averaging 3.7 blocks per game, something the Oklahoma City Thunder won’t want to underestimate.

Coming off an NBA championship, the Thunder’s dominance this season is no fluke.

NBA on Christmas Day and the final, SGA once again ranks top five among all NBA players in scoring averaging (32.2 points), 6.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds. With additional depth and contributions from the likes of Chet Holmgren and Luguentz Dort, the Thunder are arguably the league’s most well-rounded team.

Christmas with a cast: Winslet premieres star-studded project ‘Goodbye June’ Kate Winslet has, to date, had a bountiful career in the limelight. Although the minds of many may jump to Rose, the first-class, door-hugging love interest in James Cameron’s 1997 epic “Titanic,” that role came just five years after her breakout role as Reet in the British sci-fi television series “Dark Season” at age 17.

By 34, the actress won her first Academy Award, for playing bus conductor Hanna Schmitz in “The Reader” (2008), and now, at age 50, Winslet is adding another boon to her ever-expanding resume: director.

Don’t miss “Goodbye June,” a collaboration between Winslet and her son, burgeoning screenwriter Joe Anders, when it premieres Wednesday, Dec. 24, on Netflix.

“Goodbye June” is, per Netflix, a drama that “takes place just before Christmas, when an unexpected turn in their mother’s health thrusts four adult siblings and their exasperating father into chaos as they navigate messy family dynamics in the face of potential loss.”

Perhaps relatable to many with siblings of their own, the holiday film boasts a star-studded cast that features Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” 2006) as the family’s titular matriarch, who, aware of her worsening situation, resolves to “orchestrate her decline on her own terms,” thus “bringing the family closer together through humor and blunt honesty.”

Mirren and Winslet, the latter of whom stars as one of June’s daughters in the film, shares the screen with fellow

big names Toni Collette (“Hereditary,” 2018), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie,” 2022), Timothy Spall (“Mr. Turner,” 2014), Stephen Merchant (“Extras”) and Johnny Flynn (“Emma., 2020”), to name a few. But, of all the known names attached to the film, there is one lesser-known name that carries a lot of weight.

Joe Anders, son of Winslet and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (“Skyfall,” 2012), is the source of the story and is credited as writer for the first time in his career. Aged 21, the budding filmmaker is now the age his mother was while filming her memorable “Titanic” role. Anders himself has already appeared in several films, including “1917” (2019), “Lee” (2023) and “Bonus Track” (2023), but “Goodbye June” marks the first project the aspiring screenwriter has penned. “A Minecraft Movie” (Dec. 22)

When a group of ordinary people — including teen siblings Natalie (Emma Myers) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen), real estate agent Dawn (Danielle Brooks) and washed-up gamer Garrett Garrison (Jason Momoa) — are mysteriously transported into the blocky world of Minecraft, they must learn to survive in a strange and dangerous new reality. Richard Curtis Q: Is there any chance Richard Curtis will do a sequel to “Love Actually”?

A: The holiday season means a lot of things to a lot of people. For many, it means watching “Love Actually” (2003) and wishing there were more.

Alas, not all Christmas wishes come true.

Writer-director Richard Curtis (“Mr. Bean”) has a few different projects on his plate, as usual, but none of them is a sequel to his beloved Christmas rom-com anthology.

It’s not clear which of his projects is next. He has two pitches

currently making the rounds — a new take on the fairlytale “The Little Mermaid,” and another called “Lost for Words,” about an actor who becomes romantically entangled with his translator.

He also said that he’s planning a series called “Old Bean,” which would revisit his classic Mr. Bean character (played to great acclaim Rowan Atkinson, “Johnny English,” 2003) in old age. “He’s always had a kind of grumpy selfishness which might adapt well,” he said in a 2021 documentary celebrating the character’s 30th anniversary.

But these are all just in the idea stage at this point (and the “Old

Bean” idea is four years old at this point). They may never make it to screen.

It should be noted that he did revisit “Love Actually” a few years ago, but not as a movie. He wrote and directed a TV special in 2017 called “Red Nose Day Actually,” which reunited many of the stars from the original film to offer an update on where their characters ended up.

It was part of the popular Red Nose Day fundraising telethon in the U.K. Thus it was quite a big deal over there, but didn’t make much of a splash in North America.

ON DIMENSION FILMS Q: Who did the voice of Ghostface? And is he still doing it?

A: Assuming you’re talking about the “Scream” films and not the short-lived 2010s series (which used a different voice actor — Mike Vaughn, “Dog,” 2022), the voice of the murderous Ghostface has been provided all along by Roger Jackson. And he’s not letting go of the role any time soon.

The 1996 film “Scream” kicked off an incredibly popular series of horror films (not to mention the also-popular 2000 horror-spoof “Scary Movie” and its many sequels). It did so by openly acknowledging the tropes of horror films past, most notably that of teenagers being hunted by a masked, knife-wielding killer.

They added a twist on that formula where the killer calls his victims on the phone as part of the hunt.

It’s hardly a spoiler at this point to say that it was a different killer in just about every film.

However, the voice on the phone was always Jackson’s.

And it will be again next year when “Scream 7” is released. Jackson will be back along with many of the stars from the original film, including Matthew Lillard (“Scooby-Doo,” 2002), Neve Campbell (“Party of Five”), Courteney Cox (“Friends”) and more.

Ghostface is Jackson’s most famous role by a longshot. The only thing on his resume that could rival it is another one equally beloved by ‘90s kids: Mojo Jojo on “The Powerpuff Girls.”

Held on the Kennedy Center Opera House stage in Washington, D.C., this star-studded event recognizes America’s most impactful artists. Celebrating creativity and culture, the 48th Kennedy Center Honors airs on CBS Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Home to the event, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts describes: “‘The Kennedy Center Honors’ recognizes and celebrates individuals whose unique contributions have shaped the way we see ourselves, each other and our world.

Recipients have each had an impact on the rich tapestry of American life and culture through the performing arts. Whether in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures or television, each Kennedy Center Honoree has a unique place in the national consciousness and their influence has inspired audiences from all walks of life.”

This year, five iconic artists will be honored for their lifetime artistic achievements, including country music icon George Strait (“The Cowboy Rides Away”); the legendary rock band KISS (“Detroit Rock City”), including members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley; the Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen, Michael Crawford (“The Knack… and How to Get It,” 1965); Grammy-winning disco pioneer Gloria Gaynor (“I Will Survive”); and blockbuster superstar Sylvester Stallone (“Rocky,” 1976).

Marking a bold departure from tradition, the Kennedy Center Honors will be presented by President Donald Trump.

While previous celebrations saw celebrity hosts such as journalist Walter Cronkite

Sylvester Stallone to be honored at the 48th Kennedy Center Honors

(“CBS Reports”), Academy Award-winning actress Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” 2002) or author-turned-diplomat Caroline Kennedy (“A Patriot’s Handbook,” 2003), this year’s celebration will be the first time a sitting president leads the ceremony. President Trump also announced the 2025 honorees during a press conference given this past August.

Kennedy Center acting President Richard Grenell spoke candidly about the importance of the awards, saying: “For nearly half a century, this tradition has celebrated those whose voices and visions tell our nation’s story and share it with the world.

This year’s honorees have left an indelible mark on our history, reminding us that the arts are for everyone.”

Whether it be through music, film or stage, this year’s honorees have crafted longstanding legacies through iconic performances.
