This month, Creston Mayor Warren Woods will be searching for a new Creston City Council member. The council accepted an official resignation Tuesday from Loyal Winborn — leaving the council after accepting an IT director position at South Hamilton School District in Jewell. He served on the council since January 2008.

Winborn’s departure leaves a vacancy on city council in ward 2. If interested in the seat, send a resume and letter of interest by email to cityclerk@crestoniowa. gov, by mail to PO Box 449, Creston, IA, 50801 or in person at 116 W. Adams St. in Creston.

Reminder: Only apply if you live within Creston’s ward 2. Don’t know which ward you live in? View the city’s ward map at www. crestoniowa.gov/citycouncil.htm or call Lisa Williamson, city clerk, at 641-782-2000. Woods said he’s already re-

ceived some interest in the seat. He noted Tuesday those applicants do not need to send any additional information. Woods hopes Woods to appoint a new councilperson by the first meeting in August. This new councilperson would fulfill the remainder of Winborn’s term which expires Dec. 31, 2015.

Maya Stein and Amy Tingle of Food for the Soul Train type “tandem poetry” for attendees of Creston Arts open mic event Tuesday at Adams Street Espresso.

Dozens of people filled Adams Street Espresso Tuesday for Type Rider II: Tandem Poetry Tour event hosted by Creston Arts. The event was inspired by Maya Stein and Amy Tingle of Food for the Soul Train — a self-dubbed pair of roving poets. The pair has raised $3,000 over their $26,000 fundraising goal on www.kickstarter. com to fund a 30-day, 1,400 mile adventure from Boulder, Colo. to Beloit, Wis., building more than 20 tiny libraries, promoting poetry, community, a love of reading and the spirit of collaboration along the way. At Tuesday’s event, Friends of the Library teen reading group — the After Thoughts — unveiled a Little Free Library book exchange they decorated, which was donated as a result of Stein’s and Tingle’s Kickstarter campaign. The Little Free Library is currently at Adams Street Espresso and will be relocated to the lawn of Lincoln School in August. During an open mic portion of the event, Stein and Tingle demonstrated “tandem poetry.” They asked passersby to offer a word or short phrase and each individually typed a poem based on what word was offered to them. Each of the poets read their poem

to the person who offered the word and a few of those poems were shared with the open mic audience. Creston Arts also set up a typewriter and encouraged passersby to contribute to a story about Creston. Re-occuring themes within the story centered around hope, growth, community and collaboration. Right, Lorelei Herrod and Harleigh Bristow laugh at tiny books made by children and adults across the United States. Below, Mayor Warren Woods welcomes open mic attendees with a rhyming sign he mounted on his scooter.

Southwestern Community College is losing another staff member. Teresa Krejci, the college’s chief financial officer, is leaving the college. Her last day is Aug. 8. Krejci accepted a position as associate vice president of finance at Drake University in Des Moines. “My parents live in Des Moines. The kids are grown and gone, and Creston was a great place to raise a family, but now, with them gone, I want to be in the Des Moines area, and I think Drake University is a great place to be part of. When that opportunity came about, I decided to apply,” Krejci said. The position of chief financial officer at Southwestern is available. Reviews for applicants will begin July 28, and run Krejci until the position is filled. ■ She has Until Krejci and her accepted husband Bill, SWCC a position athletic director and ath- with Drake letic fundraiser, sell their University. house, Krejci will commute to Creston on weekends. “He (Bill) is moving to Des Moines with me,” Krejci said. “Whether he is going to commute is up to him.” Bill is currently in Mexico and was unavailable for comment. Krejci said she is excited for the opportunity at Drake University. “It’s a new adventure,” Krejci said. “Last year, I completed my master’s degree in higher education because I thought I wanted to look for a new adventure, a new opportunity, and I thought that would help. I kept my eye open to see what would be available. Then, I came across this opportunity and I decided to apply.” But, Krejci also said she will miss the people in Creston. “We’ve got so many friends around here, you just know everybody. So, obviously, I’m going to miss everybody I’ve worked with and been around for so long,” Krejci said. “It’s going to be different, and maybe a little scary, but also exciting at the same time.”
