Water line bursts, floods SWCC building By SARAH BROWN
CNA staff reporter sbrown@crestonnews.com
Administrators at Southwestern Community College (SWCC) have to watch their step this morning. On Sunday around 9 a.m., SWCC personnel discovered the administration building full of water as a result of a 4-inch water line that had burst. Tom Lesan, vice president of economic development at SWCC, said normally there aren’t any personnel in the
building on Sunday, but they happen to be painting the office this weekend. “We are lucky it was found,” Lesan Lesan said. “Otherwise, it would have kept flooding.” Lesan said 80 percent of the building had two inches of water, which includes the front lobby and offices. According to a SWCC press
release, the water was shut off and Service Master was called in to assist with clean-up. During the process of digging to find the leak, much of the sidewalk directly in front of the Administration Center and two trees in front of the building had to be removed in order to get equipment in to find the leak. The Administration Center is open for business this morning, however, many of the office areas are still in disarray with fans Please see FLOODED, Page 2

Party in the Park had everything “covered” for a great time Saturday at McKinley Park with classic concert foods, community camaraderie and some of the most popular bands of the 1970s. More than 2,000 people enjoyed a night filled with music from Change of Heart, a Heart tribute band; Revelation, a Journey tribute band; and 7 Bridges, a six-piece Eagles tribute band. J o h n K a w a , Creston Parks and Recreation Kawa B o a r d chairman, said he has heard nothing but positive feedback about the three bands that performed. “The weather held for us, which we were very grateful,” Kawa said. “It was a perfect night, everything went together real well.”

Board members and volunteers are tearing down and doing a final cleaning around McKinley Park today in preparation of farmers’ market tonight, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. “It is pretty constant,” Kawa said. “We are glad that people always seem to do a good job cleaning up after themselves and acting like they care. The park is in pretty good shape.” He added the presence of the Creston Police and Fire Departments was appreciated to keep Party in the Park goers safe and the sponsors helped make it another successful year.

Political scientists predict Branstad re-election JOHNSTON (MCT) — It might be hard to tell from the campaign ads already beginning to fill the airways, but the lack of movement in Iowa gubernatorial polls may be because the race isn’t fully formed. “Some of these races are not fully developed yet,” Loras College politics professor Christopher Budzisz said Friday during the taping of Iowa Press. “So, sometimes it’s that the bright lines that will be in stark contrast that will be made during a campaign ... (haven’t) occurred yet.” It’s also possible the lack of movement in polls of those races is due to the fact outside groups haven’t begun to invest heavily in the Iowa races, to Branstad “move the meter, so to speak,” according to Budzisz, who directs the Loras College Poll. Budzisz, Dianne Bystrom, director of Iowa State University Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, and Chris Larimer, associate professor of political science at the University of Northern Iowa, discussed polling and politics on the show which will air Friday on IPTV at 7:30 p.m. and noon on Sunday, and at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on IPTV World. It’s available beginning Friday night at www.iptv.org. Quinnipiac University Polls beginning in 2013 have shown fifth-term GOP Gov. Terry Branstad
