CNA associate editor jwaddingham@crestonnews.com
A heavily-contested Republican primary race for an empty U.S. Senate seat has turned into a money war between the two frontrunners. This is the first wide-open senate seat race in 40 years after Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced he would not seek re-election. U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley emerged as the
only strong Democrat candidate and will not face any competition in the primary. In the Republican primary, state Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Red Oak, leads Mark Jacobs in the latest polls according to the Des Moines Register Iowa Poll. Ernst garnered 36 percent of likely GOP voter support in the poll during the final week before the June 3 primary. Jacobs slid four points to 18 percent. Matt Whitaker, Sam Clovis and

Creston Library Board accepted an offer last week on the Omaha house donated by Edwin and the late Virginia (Stamper) Van Surksum to help transform Lincoln School into the city’s new library. The board listed the house for $120,000 in February. Ann Coulter, library board president, said the accepted offer last week was $95,000. Creston City Council is expected to set a public hearing on this matter Tuesday. Coulter said, also in May, the board received a $5,000 donation from Schildberg Construction Company of Grand River. “We’re thankful for both donations. This money gets us moving in the right direction to meet the needs of the community,” Coulter said. That said, the library board held work sessions for a total of six hours May 19-20 to develop a clear vision for transforming Lincoln School into the city’s new library. In that meeting, the board and Mandy Kolesik of Marketing Kinetics identified the needs of the community. Also, Kolesik identified 16 foundations or corporations that may contribute money for the new library at Lincoln School. The board will continue discussions 5:15 p.m. tonight at their regularly scheduled meeting.
