Tailgate Opening day at Creston Farmers’ Market will feel more like a tailgate complete with live music of Beards of a Feather, smoked burgers and meat with barbecue sides by HyVee and a meet and greet with Iowa Barnstormer players and cheerleaders. Representatives of the Iowa Barnstormers will be at the Creston Farmers’ Market to promote Southwest Iowa Night at the Iowa Barnstormers game 7:05 p.m. June 14 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. At the game, Creston Peppers will perform and pre-qualified game attendees will take part in a pie-eating contest or pork chop toss. To qualify, participants will compete
Union County is planning the next step for non-compliance of a nuisance complaint served to 1097 244th Street in Kent. The nuisance complaint was served April 8 and the homeowner was given 45 days to clean up the issues addressed in the complaint. The homeowner was also required to submit a written plan of action within the first 10 days to establish a timeline of when the nuisances would be remedied. Amanda Husband, Union County environmental specialist, said little progress was made to clean up the property and a written plan was not submitted. Husband told Union County Board of Supervisors Monday her investigation of the property showed some Husband “rubbish” was removed near the roadway, but the yard was in similar shape to when the complaint was filed. She also showed photos comparing the way the property looked on the first day of the complaint and after the 45 days the owner was given to handle the nuisance. A property nuisance must be breaking Iowa Code or Union County Code for Husband to pursue further

Changes This year, the Creston Farmers’s Market board of directors voted to update
the market rules, which now require 90 percent of produce and craft items to be produced locally. “A vendor may carry produce from another grower as long as the grow site is within Iowa,” said Brian Zachary, market manager. Zachary said this change was made specifically to encourage consumers to buy from local farmers and independent, homebased artisans. Additionally, Zachary welcomed two new faces
to the farmers’ market managem e n t team — Candy Hamilton and Jan Hamilton Ekeler, both of Creston. Hamilton said she had a thought about vol- Ekeler unteering at the farmers’ market, and the next day saw an advertisement in the newspaper calling for volunteers. “I saw the ad and thought, ‘This was meant to be,’” Hamilton said. Hamilton then called Ekeler and asked if she would join her. “I am very interested in gardening and making sure I grow as much as I can of my own food,” Hamilton said. “I realize there’s a need to promote that whether that’s through gardening or through farmers’ market. I’m just interested in living

Study: Student attitude on gambling (MCT) — The Iowa Department of Public Health released two studies on Tuesday that looked at gambling attitudes and behaviors among Iowa youth and college students. Both studies looked at the frequency in which students gambled, the demographics and the types of gambling students participate in. The Center for Social and Behavioral Research at the University of Northern Iowa found that nearly seven in 10 college students gambled in the previous year, and 10 percent met criteria for problem gambling. The survey was taken by 709 UNI
students and 143 Kirkwood Community College students. Among students who reported gambling in the past year, 14 percent said they gambled more than monthly and another 16 percent said they gambled once per month or every other month. More than one-third of respondents said they gambled on card games with friends or family, scratch tickets and games of personal skill and one quarter said they had gambled on slot machines, raffle tickets and pools, such as March Madness or baby due dates.
Males were more likely than females to gamble and a larger proportion of males than females reported engaging in nearly all forms of gambling over the past year. The findings underscored the need for students’ increased awareness of and access to treatment on and near campuses, the report said. Meanwhile, a 2012 survey reviewing gambling attitudes and behaviors among Iowa’s sixth, eighth, and 11th graders also found that males (38 percent) are more likely to have gambled compared with females (14 percent).
