Mount Ayr track wins state championship By SCOTT VICKER

CNA sports editor svicker@crestonnews.com

DES MOINES — Championship Saturday of the Co-ed State Track Meet lived up to its name for the Mount Ayr Raiders and for Creston junior Jay Wolfe. The Mount Ayr boys won three events Saturday in Class 1A, propelling the Raiders to the Class 1A boys team title with a recordbreaking 77 points — the highest point total ever for Class 1A. In doing so, the Raiders won

the first boys team title in school history. Mount Ayr won the girls team title in 1988. In total, the Raiders won six events. Kyle Dolecheck, Noah Larsen and Erik Freed were each a part of three state championships, while Jacob Sobotka and Lincoln Martin each contributed to two. Grant Staats and Trevor Anderson both won one state title. Wolfe, the Drake Relays runner-up in the 800 meters, became Creston’s first boys state champion since Mike Mansour in 1998. Wolfe dominated the field in the Class 3A 800 meters, winning by 1.42 seconds over Algona’s Peter Hollinger. Wolfe ran 1:53.79, just .05 seconds off of the Class 3A state meet record, and besting his previous best time by 1.26 seconds.

ne hundred and nine graduates walked across the stage in their caps and gowns to receive their diploma during Creston High School’s commencement ceremony Sunday afternoon. Galen Zumbach, school board president, offered those students both advice and a challenge during his opening remarks inside the muggy CHS gymnasium. “My advice to each of you is don’t spend so much time trying to find the perfect situation that you miss the right opportunity,” Zumbach said. “And, my challenge to you is to find your dream and pursue it. Don’t get discourage if you fail — because success is not final and failure not fatal.” Student speakers for the 2014 commencement ceremony were the six valedictorians

CEDAR RAPIDS (MCT) — Gov. Terry Branstad didn’t endorse Jeb Bush for president, but he endorsed the former Florida governor’s record and predicted he would be a “formidable” candidate if he runs in 2016. Fresh off a May 22 Coral Gables fundraiser with the brother of President George W. Bush, Branstad said Bush “may be thinking about” running for president in 2016. “He’s in great shape. He’s in good humor,” Branstad said, but Bush didn’t specifically talk about seeking the presidency. “We talked more about my race and in his interest in helping me,” Branstad said.
