Six GOP candidates make final push before Iowa’s 3rd Congressional primary. Winner will face Democrat Staci Appel in November.

T

here are a list of six Republican candidates running to fill Iowa’s open 3rd Congressional District seat. The seat became open when Tom Latham announced in December that he would not run for re-election to the U.S. House. • The list of candidates include Robert Cramer, Joe Grandanette, Matt Schultz, Monte Shaw, David Young and Brad Zaun. The Republican primary is slated June 3. The winner will face Democrat Staci Appel who has no primary election opponent.• Below are capsules for each Republican candidate running for the seat.

ROBERT CRAMER made stops in Creston, Corning, Greenfield and Mount Ayr earlier this week as he continued his push for votes in this race. Cramer, 46, is an Iowa State University graduate and currently resides in Grimes. He owns a bridge construction company. He has two children with his wife, Lori, and they have been foster parents to 16 children. “There are a lot of good guys in the race,” Cramer told the News Advertiser. “I think what I bring to the table is the depth of business knowledge.” Cramer said he is not a career politician, but thinks it is a benefit that he can combine business experience with conservative values. On the campaign trail, he’s been focused on job creation to get the economy rolling again. MATT SCHULTZ has been Iowa’s secretatary of state since 2010 championing election integrity and fight for commonsense voter ID. He’s the oldest of five boys raised in West Des Moines, graduating from Valley High School. He graduate from the University of Iowa and from Creighton University School of Law. He currently lives in Madison County with his wife, Zola, and their five children. Schultz, 36, was recently named to the Washington Post’s “40 Under 40” list which highlights promising young politicians from across the country. In his latest advertisement, Schultz is for Obamacare being repealed and replaced with a free market solution of tort reform, cost transparency and portability. “It’s time to tell the truth,” Schultz said. “Obamacare is a disaster and I will fight tooth and nail to repeal it and institute free-market reforms. Obama and Pelosi told us the lie of the year and it is time they were held accountable for it. In Washington I will fight to do just that.”

DAVID YOUNG is a sixth-generation Iowan who has spent the past seven years as chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, gaining experience of how the system works in Washington, D.C. Young, 46, was born and raised in Van Meter. He moved to Johnston as a junior and graduated from Johnston High School. He went on to earn an English degree at Drake University. Young told the News Advertiser earlier this year he wants to be a political “watch dog” for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District taxpayers. Young hopes to bridge a trust gap with the American people, blaming both sides of the aisle for abusing power and for the $17 trillion debt. To handle budget issues, Young believes in base line budgeting. Lastly, Young wants to target the national job deficit. He praises Iowans for their work ethic. The state has an unemployment rate of less than 5 percent. One area Young believes would help job creation is by trimming the 73,000-page tax code to make it “flatter, fairer, simpler and make it permanent.” BRAD ZAUN currently represents District 20 in the Iowa Senate. Zaun was educated at Grandview College in Des Moines. Zaun vows to help put the political fighting in Washington, D.C. and learn to live within its means. A recent poll by Loras College shows the 51-year-old Zaun leading the way in his GOP primary race for the 3rd Congressional District. The poll surveyed 300 likely voters with Zaun collecting 17.4 percent of the vote, well below the 35 percent threshold required for the nomination. The rest of the field was relatively bunched up with Robert Cramer, David Young, Matt Schultz and Monte Shaw all receiving between 5.3 and 8.3 percent. Noteworthy, just over half of those polled indicated they were undecided in the upcoming race.

JOE GRANDANETTE is the underdog in this highly-contested GOP primary race for Congress. He’s a graduate of Drake University and has been a teacher in the Des Moines public school system for 26 years. He lives in Des Moines with his wife Ting and has one daughter, Rosina. Grandanette, 59, is focused on gaining energy independence from foreign oil, following the Constitution including the right to bear arms and stopping corruption in Medicare and Medicaid fraud. MONTE SHAW grew up on a farm near Shenandoah and graduated from Simpson College in Indianola. He currently resides in West Des Moines with his wife, Tina, and two children, Eden and Max. He visited Creston for his hometown press tour during a 10-city campaign event in February. Shaw is currently the executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels association. He has worked to promote energy independence and rural economic development in Iowa. “Given the path our federal government is currently on, it’s not an overstatement to say the very future of our children is at stake,” Shaw said. “Do we want them to have the same opportunities that we did? Or are we content to sit back, do nothing, and see them buried under a pile of debt and big government programs?” Besides seeking a better future for our country by promoting energy independence, Shaw wants to control government spending, cut the federal bureaucracy, and continue allowing the economy to grow. In his addition to his work with the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, Shaw has managed several Republican campaigns and served as an aide to Sen. Chuck Grassley. He has remained an active volunteer for the Republican party at the state and local levels. Earlier this week, the Des Moines Register endorsed Shaw stating he has the ability to appeal to all parties, making him the best choice for the position.

NWS issues flood warning, river levels expected to rise CLINTON (MCT) — National Weather Service observers have issued a flood warning for the Clinton area that is expected to last until Saturday.
