Cramer pushes for success in highly-contested primary By JAKE WADDINGHAM

U.S. Congress candidate Robert Cramer made stops in Creston, Corning, Greenfield and Mount Ayr Monday as he continued his push for votes in the Republican primary for Iowa’s 3rd district slated June 3. Cramer is an Iowa State University graduate and currently resides in Grimes. He has two children with his wife, Lori, and they have been foster parents to 16 children. Incumbent Tom Latham is not seek-

ing re-election, so Cramer is one of six Republican candidates competing for the chance to face Democrat Staci Appel in the general election. “There are a lot Cramer of good guys in the race,” Cramer said. “I think what I bring to the table is the depth of business knowledge.” Cramer said he is not a career politician, but thinks it is a benefit that he can combine business experience with

conservative values. “I tell people ‘and’ is better, having both,” Cramer said. “I can do both and bring everybody together.” While on the campaign trail, Cramer said the focus has been on jobs to get the economy rolling again. “It helps the person looking for a job, it helps the person looking for a better job and it helps those people whose wages have been stagnant,” Cramer said. OSCEOLA — Poison frontman Bret Michaels will perform during his Life Rocks Tour 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeside Casino in Osceola. Life Rocks Tour attendees can expect a full dose of Poison-era songs — “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Something to Believe In,” “Unskinny Bop,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — solo material and a handful of cover songs. His most recent album — “Jammin’ with Friends” — showcases a series of collaborations with Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Buffett, Edwin McCain, Miley Cyrus, Michael Anthony of Van Halen, Ace Frehley of Kiss and Phil Collen of Def Leopard. “Jammin’ with Friends” placed 29th on Billboard’s Rock Album chart upon its release. CSD teachers receive 4.5 percent raise By BAILEY POOLMAN

Administrators, supervisors and staff under non-union contracts received pay increases after Creston School Board passed a motion during the regularly scheduled meeting Monday. Staff under non-union contracts will receive a 4.49 percent pay raise. Two head custodians received the 4.49 percent increase, as well as an hourly adjustment. “The district received 5.2 percent new money for the upcoming school year,” said Steve McDermott, Creston superintendent. “That’s through the legislature, through allowable growth. ... We’ve received no increase in our health insurance McDermott cost this spring, so that has also helped support the salary increase.” Supervisors of food service, transportation and maintenance and grounds also received a 4.49 percent pay raise, and administrators received a 3.3 percent pay raise. Staff under teacher’s union contracts and AFSCME (public services employees) union support staff contracts received a 4.49 percent pay raise. Please see RAISE, Page 2

AFTON — Afton Police Chief John Coulter reports the owner of a silver Dodge truck suspected to be involved in an explosion that occured 10 p.m. Friday on North Webster Street in Afton was not involved with the incident. Coulter said the driver of the truck did noticed two individuals —possibly teens or young adults — standing in an alley between Kansas and Fillmore streets as he drove north on Webster. Coulter “After we reviewed everything, it appeared to be a potassium nitrate chemical bomb,” Coulter said. Afton Police are still investigating this incident. No injuries or damage were reported. Individuals with information regarding the incident are encouraged to contact Afton Police Department at (641) 347-5255.
