New park ranger residency to cost $200K By JAKE WADDINGHAM

Union County Conservation Director Doug Jones presented the low bids for a modular home, basement and septic system to Union County Supervisors for a new park ranger residence at Three Mile Lake. The bids total about $170,000 total, but Jones estimates total cost will be around $200,000 for additional projects that were not bid on, such as siding and electricity. “We will be taking a blank piece of ground with no utilities, septic or electricity and have a fully-functional, new home by the time we are done,” Jones said at the Supervisor’s meeting Monday. Construction is expected Jones to start on the basement in July, with a majority of the project being completed by the fall. The current ranger residence — a two-story, yellow farm house — needed a bathroom completely replaced, new siding, structural support and the wiring brought up to code. Supervisors and Union County Conservation Board decided it would be better to build new rather than continue to spend money on expensive repairs to an old house. “If it would have been a $5,000 fix, we wouldn’t have been having this conversation,” Jones said to Supervisors Feb. 24. “We would have just went to work on the house.” Three Mile Lake is a high-use recreational area that is open all year. The park ranger — who is currently Joe Mayhew — serves

fanfare of cheers and applause greeted four trumpeter swans as they made their first splash into their new home at Summit Lake in Creston Friday morning. The swans were the last four that will be released in 2014 as part of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources effort to restore the trumpeter swan population. There were 46 swan nest attempts in Iowa in 2013. “Since only Video two nesting atof the tempts occurred in southern Iowa trumpeter in 2013, addi- swans being tional restorareleased can tion efforts will be focused on be viewed at that half of the crestonnews. state,” said Iowa com by clickDNR Wildlife Technician Dave ing on the Hoffman. video tab. Hoffman has been working with the trumpeter swan restoration program since its inception in 1994. The program has released 1,132 swans that have been reported in 17 states as far west as Colorado and as far east as Virginia. “Iowa swans have also been seen in two Canadian provinces,” Hoffman said. From 1884 to 1997 there were no nesting swan pairs in Iowa. Today, trumpeter swans are nearing sustainable numbers in north central and east central Iowa. The swans released at Summit Lake — two males and two females — have one wing clipped and are only 11 months old. They will be unable to fly until after they molt or replace their feathers this fall. Charges filed in death of Orient-Macksburg graduate
OMAHA, Neb. — A 33-year-old homeless man has been charged on suspicion of killing his former girlfriend Amanda Brown — this according to an Omaha World Herald story published Saturday. The Herald reports Sonny Delong was arrested Thursday evening in downtown Omaha. Delong was booked into jail Friday on suspicion of criminal homicide and firstdegree arson. Brown was a 2003 graduate of OrientMacksburg High School. Her body was found by Omaha firefighters last week after distinguishing a brush fire near train tracks on 14th and Mason streets in Omaha.

Top, Dave Hoffman, a wildlife technician for Iowa DNR, gives a presentation about trumpeter swans at Summit Lake Friday before releasing the 11 month old swans. One wing is clipped, so the swans will stay near Summit Lake until they molt and get new feathers this fall. Above, Hoffman allows Triston Barncastle and other students from Mayflower Heritage Christian School to interact with a swan before it is released.
